"It’s always and only about Midtown with Steve Cohn."

That's not true.

And Midtown (and downtown) may be considered the soul of Sacramento because it is the historic city civic/business/shopping/entertainment center, containing the preserved (thank you longtime neighborhood activists/residents/business owners), culture of a central, walkable, mixed use, sustainable and historic way of life that is now so attractive (and lucrative). This history, architecture and way of life is reflected in the surrounding neighborhoods, including East Sac in District 3.

Midtown can handle a certain level of entertainment development if it is well-managed and maintains quality of life. Events and businesses need to be placed in appropriate venues and settings. This goes back to planning and city management decisions.

Some of the activities and crowds can be spread out on different days in different locations. It's unfortunate that someone (else) had to die before neighborhood impacts were taken seriously.

I support the efforts taking place by the council, business owners, festivity participants, and community members. Thank you for your time and efforts. I believe we all would agree that improved & refined event management should take place to benefit all involved parties. There is a significant difference between "management" and "micro-management", and we won't "lose the 'organic" nature" of the event by improved, more responsible management of the event. Signage? Well, some is better than none, but more cooperation, consistency & cross-communication within the infrastructure must take place. The businesses, the community, the security and the attendees must be in the know of how the event will proceed. An increase communication, structured agendas & timelines would help....have you ever been to music festivals, brew-fests, block parties, or community events? They have agendas, organization, documentation....and they still retain the true organic, safe and entertaining venue.

My hunch realistically? The weather will change, kids are back in school, less over-crowding of the event during the fall & winter months....and all discussions will be dismissed until it gets crazy again next summer. I hope the discussions continue and solutions are proposed and applied.....but really, I feel the hot topic will be placed in the "organic" compost pile until the problem sprouts again next year.

I like to see that this forum is happening so that we can proceed to resolve this issue without losing our collective heads, and make sure Second Saturday continues amicably and that its heart and spirit stay in tact.
Did you know that Taylor's also delivers groceries, just like in the big cities??? There is something really GREAT about this small market - they carefully select the food and products they sell, and they're just plain NICE. They also carry locally produced wines from nearby appelations -- and many are truly world class.

I truly love getting my Friday morning orders from Taylor's -- their meats are locally sourced, and they make their own ground stuff -- like ground beef and ground lamb, which is really great in spaghetti.

Their restaurant is also amazing, and philanthropic -- they hosted a fundraiser for Haitian relief that was packed to the rafters.

Taylor's is a gem and I hope they're here for a long long time.

This is a GREAT way to give these kids a sense of "community investment" and pride! Every time they walk/drive/bike past this project, they'll be able to see themselves in it. We need more of these...and not just for "at-risk" youth - they're ALL at risk! I attended an alternative high school in the early 80's, and it truly turned my life around academically. But it also afforded me the opportunity to feel more accountable to my community and to myself. Great job, young people!

I love Indian food. One more restaurant to add to the new one on 21st St and the lunch time buffet on 10th/K will be welcome - American 'Indian' restaurants tend to go a lot for sweet, mild curries, usually chicken based. I'd like to see more lamb and some vindaloos which live up to their name!
....and poppadoms - I saw a menu that asked $2 for a poppadom!! they should be free, people!

I think you're right for the dinner crowds, but it's a great locale for lunch. They have a lot of state workers that work very close. The day I was in there it was packed, and the owners said it was a pretty mild day. But they did admit there wasn't as much of a rush for dinner. Perhaps their midtown location would be more dinner focused.

It looks like they do. Here's a link to their menu online: http://www.7lindiangrill.com/menu.html

Scrolling down you'll find a vegetarian section. I should say that the menu in their restaurant is smaller than their online one, so you may want to call ahead to make sure they can do cook what you're looking for, but they seemed like the kind of cooks that would throw together a custom meal as long as they had all the ingredients.

Thanks for that link. A member of the audience raised some concern about whether or not AB 32 was right for Califronia and, thus, Sacramento. Jones didn't address the details os AB 32, but he did say that Prop 23 is meant to drive green businesses out of California, or that that would be the result of it. I don't know enough to comment on the details of either pieces of legislation though.

Jon, Great article first off. (fix the "impotent asset" near the bottom though :)

I guess I would need some clarification on what it means to be a "leader in green technology". i think that would mean creating an environment where green technology is researched, developed, and manufatured locally, and is of a quality that it would be consumed nationwide and worldwide.

If that's the goal, I guess you need to start somewhere, but it is mostly a pipe dream. You simply have to answer what Sacramento can offer in this area compared to Silicon Valley, Research Triangle NC, Singapore, Shanghia....

Technology focused higher education - Average
High Tech labor pool - Average/Poor
Venture Capital - Poor
Regional Alliance and Agreement - Poor
History of support for technology - Fair to Poor
Cost of Living - High
Regulatory hurdles - High
Dysfunctional State Govt - High

Frankly any US region will have a hard time competing internationally. Asia (China, Singapore, Taiwan) not only have the venture capital and low barriers for high tech business, they also have the need (population, pollution, high energy cost). America will always have smart entrepeneurs, and the west coast will always have more than our share. But Van Jones is dreaming if he thinks the Sacramento region really has the tools to become a "silicon valley" of green tech.

Maybe "leader in green technology" means something else than what I am thinking. Like 80% of houses having high efficiency windows or something, and cleanest sewer water in the state. That seems to be what I see on the Greenwise site. In that case... who cares...

Loaves & Fishes claim of standing in the lawsuit is because their outreach clinic, staffed by one nurse [Suzi, at the time the lawsuit was filed; she has since resigned and is no longer at L&F], will be overwhelmed if cuts to county services are allowed to go forward, such that contageous disease might spread through the Loaves & Fishes compound.

It is extraordinarily unlikely that Loaves & Fishes would be overwhelmed by contageous disease. L&F's standing in the lawsuit is very weak, but it was never, as this article implies, that the organization, or Libby, represent homeless people, and neither do.

Loaves & Fishes has been growing its cash assets by millions of dollars in the last few years. It is THEY who have a responsiblity here that is other than filing a lawsuit, for heaven's sake! They can take up a burden! What a concept. The Sacramento Press staff should ask some hard questions and fact check.

Bravo, I remember the inception of this idea and worked on two failed campaigns to get a fee increase passed to build it. At the time called "A Train Wreck" by then President Gerth. I had to chuckle at that. A decade later it's coming to fruition. If you remember the BEER (Better Education Events and Recreation) campaign of 1998 then you'll have a little laugh to see how far the idea has come in ten years. Kudos to Leslie Davis and Alexander Gonzalez as well as the hundreds of students for seeing the vision and making it happen.

Yes and no. If you attended CSUS during the semesters they had raised fees to pay for the building, then you will have either a significant discount, or the fee hikes you paid will be credited for the appropriate amount of time. If you graduated before that, then you won't be able to use the facility. They are still working out the details of that part, but the answer is yes if you were there during that window.

Good question, I forgot to put that in there.

I am surprised that you didn't mention anything about how Riverpark lost its historic high school to St. HOPE and now must travel all the way to Bradshaw and Kiefer for their new "program improvement " high school. It's a travesty that many, many of your neighbors are concerned about.

I support public education 100%. Right now, there is a BIG push by the BEE, Supt. Raymond, and the mayor to privitize our education system. This is dangerous territory and I will fight to prevent it from ever happening. There is a lot of unregulated tax money charterization firms (st. HOPE) and corporations want to get their hands on. It has nothing to do with the children.

Jim, that's simply not the case. Utah's problem is that it is just the opposite of prop 14 - in order to even get on the partisan primary ballot, candidates have to be among the top two at a party convention. In fact, a recent editorial in a Utah paper made the case that Utah should move to a prop 14 like system: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700041351/Pignanelli-and-Webb-Will-Utah-follow-California-with-top-2-primary-system.html

Prop 14 is very misleading. What will end up happening is that the Political Party's will actually have more say in the process of selection than ever before - which means more extreme candidates.

For example, Utah has a similar system as Prop 14, so what ends up happening is that party's choose their endorsed candidate and rally had around them. That's how Republican Senator Bob Bennett got ousted by a tea party candidate.

Jay is another typical parasite who has volunteered only to get into public office, not to better his community.

There are two kinds of people in our society scare me the most, even more than criminals....those who really really want to be cops, and those who really really want to be politicans - Both want the legitmized ability and power to control others.

Arrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhh. I was praying McCarty would win. Dickinson?? Hasn't he done enough damage at the county level? Why are voters so pleased with mediocrity, let alone failure? How did the quality bar get so low? Are we so sensitive towards our elected officials' feelings we are afraid to state the truth about their dismal performance? What is happening in this country? I don't get it

Congrats Mr. Dickinson. As to appealing to Republicans and/or Republicrats.. it is a waste of all good people's time. A Republican today would think Nixon was a pinko commie. I wish the era of far Right was over but I know that even smart people have irrational fears and belief systems which are only reinforced in times of rapid change and personal and social stress and anxiety. While some want our "country back" others want our country forward. Holding back progress is always futile. Try as you might the future marches forward. The question is are we going march with it, help shape it, and secure our place in it... or are we going to march against it and get trampled? Will we slowly become more isolated, poorer, and more dependent on others? Are we going to remain like a middle-age man sadly holding on to the fading glorly of his youth? I think America can be great again but it's not going to be by doing what we've done in the past.

I wish Mr. McCarty the very best, but I am also happy he is going to finish out his term on city council. I appreciate the work he is doing for this city. Another plus to this: Had he won, we the voters would have had to pay for a special election to fill his council seat. I hope that Roger Dickinson will serve our district well in the Assembly.

Looking forward to life under prop 14, when candidates will have to at least try to appeal to Republicans like me. I would have voted for Hammond. Perhaps the era of far left candidates will be over.
