Go for it, I worked on the top floor of that bldg. with the State Of California Social Welfare Office. The elevator had a gate type that folded back for you to enter and then the operator would close that metal gate and you could see through it as you passed each floor on the way up to the top. Very scary.

The Switchblade lists Moller's Freedom-Motors "Rotapower" engine as an optional powerplant with a TBO (time between overhaul) of 2000 hours, no less! The only problem is that the engine is not in production and shows no sign it ever will be. Where Samson gets a 2000 hour life I don't know. Who knows if there is even 2000 hours on the design.

How funny that you quoted Bob Sacket. A friend of mine use to hostess at Laughs Unlimited in the 80's. And on my 23rd B-day I went to after hours dinner w/her and Bob and another comedy guy who use to do the Boggel commercialsand imitate Rod Serling. We went to Fat citys in OLd Sac. I live out of state now so I don't know if it's still there or not. But it was alot of fun, I do remember he apple pie ala mode. It was a fun time. Another twist on the whole thing was our waiter was a former Sid and Marty Croft actor and was a tree on Lisaville and was alos a actor on the New Zoo Review. Needles to say it was a most memorbial 23rd B-day. It's nice to know some old haunts still exsist there. Is it still by the Steam Factory , or something like that . I remember it was downstairs ???

This strikes me as a pretty typical "upcoming event" article--the type you'll see in the lifestyles section of any newspaper. And I appreciate hearing about events before they happen as opposed to after-the-fact writeups about events I wish I'd known about! I don't object to this sort of article--particularly when the coverage comes from an SP staffer.

What I object to (time and time again) are companies posting "stories" attempting to shill themselves/their services and get free advertising.

Agreed, to a point. The alternative to mentioning an underexposure to popular music might be to conceal it. What would be more honest? It makes good copy -- but that doesn't make it 1) untrue, nor 2) a crutch. Then again, there is someone here who truly knows EVERYTHING, and that person seems to believe that giving an artist in their first full year of public exposure the benefit of the doubt is just a little bit too much to ask. Ah, the wisdom at hand.

Just want to clarify that the City cuts are much steeper than $150,000. Since the start of FY08, on July 1, 2007 to the start of FY11 on July 1, 2010, our total budget reduction, excluding Art in Public Places, is almost 2/3rds from 2.6 million to 950,000. Also, SMAC was started under Mayor Phil Isenberg. Burnett Miller, Susan Willoughby and Muriel Johnson were also there on the ground floor.

The "arts" have no business getting any city or county dollars. Private donors can give all they want to help arts organizations and that's how it should be in today's tough fiscal times. I don't think you'll see much voter support for spending budget on the "arts," although downtown/Midtown Saccies are more prone to buying into giving tax dollars to art projects/artists.

"...Mayor Kevin Johnson's For Art's Sake initiative was begun to raise the profile of arts in the city. "We are going to promote the arts in a real way," he said."

I wasn't going to post on this site any further, but this story just screams a ridiculous fakery... plus, things appear to be awfully dull when I'm not around....

So all that work to cultivate Second Saturdays and a thriving arts community that has made Midtown the hottest place on the grid wasn't REAL??? Not to mention the fundraising and sheer and utter grind of building the annex to the Crocker, or the arts in the schools efforts made by former Mayors Heather Fargo, Joe Serna, and Anne Rudin....

Kevin Johnson didn't even know about Second Saturdays until he entered the race for mayor -- and he admitted as much in his preliminary interviews.

While it's nice to see any attention at all lent toward the arts in these days of precarious budgets and SMI powergrabs, this seems more of a PR affectation driven by KJ's backers, than anything substantive -- very much like his housing for the homeless 'initiatives'... perhaps intended to aid event driven activities controlled by an 'event planner' whose history in the arts is questionable...

Beware people who tout their arts credentials who are neither artists nor knowledgeable about art itself, or the history of more organic lengths to which the arts in Sacramento have grown and prospered to the extent possible, for such toutings are not likely to survive if they have no particular grounding in what has come before them...

Very good article. Another excellent source of information is the documentary Subterranean Sacramento, produced in 2007 by KVIE as part of their ViewFinder series (full disclosure: I work at KVIE so am clearly a fan of this episode). It offers some great images of the streets and shop entrances beneath the streets of modern-day Sacramento. Here's a link: http://www.kvie.org/programs/kvie/viewfinder/subterranean/default.htm.

That was one point Heather touched on in her talk--the 1862 storm was a 200-year storm, and another similar storm today might still overtop the existing levees and result in catastrophic flooding. The levees protect the central city, but there are plenty of outlying suburbs that are very much at risk from catastrophic floods.

It didn't even happen once a year. It happened twice--once in conjunction with Gold Rush Days, once in conjunction with an event at the Railroad Museum. This will be the first permanent underground sidewalk tour, operating every weekend, in the city's history. The fact that so many people assume there must have been regular tours just indicates how much demand there is for this tour!

The current tour is located strictly in Old Sacramento. There have been efforts made to get a few downtown property owners interested in having their underground sidewalk spaces as part of a tour, but none of them were willing to participate. Hopefully when they see tourists lined up to take the tour, they'll see the money-making potential!

It's so awesome to hear that the younger generation is listening to more music from their parents' age, and it just shows the immutable power that some of that early rock and roll holds. However, it might be a warning sign that the kids are playing too many video games as opposed to breaking out old records and actually touching vinyl, touching the music, seeing it move, and not watching a load bar on a screen. Viva la rock. And I will be excited to see Heart at Raley field. Also, I'm so glad the author said 'former lead singer' and not 'original lead singer' of Van Halen.
I think those who kvetch about the cost of government without volunteering which services they receive but are either unaware of or knowledgeable of but unwilling to surrender are just plain old hypocrites, at every level of government.

So often people rail about governmental inefficiencies without ever having stepped foot into a senior role at a large private firm and witnessed first hand just how inefficient such organizations are, not to mention the bloated senior manager compensation, largely at the expense of extraordinarily substandard wages paid to those employees lowest on the corporate ladder...

But they heard somewhere, no doubt on Foxnoise or some other right wing knuckle dragging neanderthal info source, that 'gummint is bad -- baaaadddd' parroting the pre-senile Reader's Digesting president Ronald Reagan's 'govt is the problem - not the solution' without any consideration of the implications of that preposterous sentiment, as if corporations were paragons of efficiency.

Our media has put forward this sort of mythology for decades, and it's time to disabuse lesser evolved ordinary mindsets of this hokum, which is so profoundly demonstrated in recent years by the economic meltdown and the sources of this prolonged financial miasma that has vexed us all...

Government is a barometer of civilization. Corporations are barometers of greed. Perhaps right wingers should do the math more effectively when weighing these two entities...

The comment above by "thsas" ("So sad that these enlightened ones are so limited in their thinking. No one can work harder? Work longer? Work smarter? Improve processes?") is an example of games. It is based on the semantic assumption that the problems of government are all due to bureaucratic inefficiency.

The reason why it's a game is that no matter how efficiently government operates, no matter how many people are laid off or new systems are implemented, it will simply never be enough. If Sacramento's city staff consisted of one manager/secretary/planner/janitor, paid minimum wage with no benefits, people would still complain about the cost of government because they had to wait for the staff person to finish fixing the toilet at City Hall before approving their building permit.

It's a game, and it's fixed--there is no winning that argument because it's a semantic black hole.

That doesn't make any sense. Are you one of those who whines about paying for socialized this or that while driving across socialized roads wearing socialized safefy devices and drinking your socialized tapwater listening to your socialized corporate welfare queen Limbaugh on the socialized airwaves?

So, long as your policy is to ignore the capacity people have to work through problems with harder effort, to achieve success through work and determination, and to seek self improvement, you have a perfect narrow minded program. How is that working for you?
