Wackadoodle; thanks for your comments. After the fire was put out, we have to set up a secure perimeter around the fire until the investigation is complete. Until this afternoon, that area was kept secure by one Fire Company, which is 4 Firefighters. Their job is to keep everyone out of the fire area. If there is evidence, it cannot be contaminated. They are also responsible to extinguish any hot spots and flare ups. The fire is now out, and a private security company was brought in to secure the area. As far as the ATF goes, this is a service they provide Nationwide. Due to the size and dollar loss of this fire and because of the enormous job it is going to be to investigate this fire, we requested the assistance of the ATF. This is common. And yes, your tax dollars are paying for this. In my opinion, if this fire was intentionally set, the person or persons responsible are very capable of causing harm and possibly killing someone, and they should be brought to justice. That is why we are doing everything we can to find the cause of this fire, and if someone is responsible, to bring them to justice. Wether or not the building is insured, doesn't change the way we do our job...

Why does it take 8 Firemen and 3 trucks idling for 3 days to watch a building that is already burnt to the ground? Does the tax dollar fund this? "The ATF has been requested to assist with the investigation due to the size and dollar loss of the fire. " Now federal dollars are being used to investigate a fire not even an acre large? For everyones information the building was uninsured.

I pulled up 10-15 seconds before this crash occured. Had my co worker and I not taken an extra minute or two out of our day this very well could have been him and me. When we pulled over there was 1 other person on the scene and it was the biggest reality check Ive ever had. My friend tried talking to the Dish Network Truck Driver while I frantically like others were calling the police. We waited and prayed for a outcome but unfourtatnly the wrong outcome happened and when the man was pulled out of the car ( In which the Sac Fire Department worked very fast to get him out with a serious of Drills, Saw,s and jaws of life) It seems he passed on. Its been hard to work all day because I cant get this out of my head. I pray tonight for both parties. I wont forget this as long as I live.

It's Tuesday morning. Our USAR Team actually came back home to Sacramento yesterday. This team and other USAR Teams from the US have been staged at strategic locations around the US in a "stand by mode" until needed. Because of the massive traffic jam trying to get into Haiti and with the Government of Haiti priortizing who comes in and what is needed most, it made more sense to send our Team back home and have them wait here instead of waiting at Travis AFB. They are still ready to go and their cache is also packed and ready to go if and when called. Their mission right now is to relieve any of the USAR Teams that are currently in Haiti if needed....

Thanks for the comments. I have been updated from our Team and unfortunately they are still at Travis AFB. They and 2 other USAR Teams are being staged at their home bases until conditions in Haiti allow them to travel there. The airport and the sea port have been badly damaged so all air and ship travel is horribly delayed. The good news is that there are 4 USAR Teams on the ground in Haiti and many other Rescue teams from other Nations are there. Numerous successful rescues have already been accomplished by these rescuers. Our folks will go soon and we hope that they can make a positive difference for all of the victims.

Hopefully the building on the corner of 10th & E, the J. L. Dunphy Grocery, can be saved--there was a lot of damage but the structure appears intact except for the back side. The brick firewall no doubt saved it from total destruction. It was originally built in 1868 and is probably the oldest grocery store in the city. The other building was a total loss. The Dunphy Grocery is a listed Sacramento landmark, it would be a shame to lose it entirely!

Historic buildings are a non-renewable resource--even mundane ones like grocery stores have a story to tell and a role to play. This building also provided inexpensive housing, so its loss also means more people on the street without an affordable place to live. Of course, every building will fall at some point, but we can make an effort to maintain and conserve the ones we have--including taking steps to minimize the risk of a tragic and dangerous building fire!

Wow, pretty harsh review of this story by "ballsout14" Gotta say you are dead wrong on this one. Having been a firefigher for over 20 years, I've heard a lot (too much) about the misconception that we shop, cook, workout and "ride around in shiny trucks". I can't blame you if you are unaware of what we do daily, but until you do, perhaps you can hold your comments and acidic tone. Firefighters rarely "sit around" and do nothing. We are usually lucky to eat on time, go through rigorous training year round to keep our skills fresh, and working out is part of our unwind time, as well as to requalify physically to keep our jobs. By the way I am a female lieutenant. My guys work their butts off. Can't you just take the story as it is, a good story? We've given up the glory plenty of times to the cops who got there first, etc. We're not in it for the glory, just the feeling of helping. Sorry you can't appreciate that. And I must say, it sounds like you may be a pretty angry person no matter what I might say.
Go ride with your local department and you'll see what I mean..Good Luck.

Ballsout, did you know that you anyone can request to go on a ride along with the fire department? I spent 24 hours with Oak Park Station 6 for a story and went on more than 20 calls with them. During those 24 hours they were never bored and barely had time to even sleep! I'm sure if you contacted Jim Doucette he would be more than happy to arrange this for you.

It is a shame when these "heroes" do one of the most common things a animal control officer does everyday and they make news and everyone says yay!! Animal Control Officers get no respect, little pay, little support from the people they serve, no training or equipment yet continue to risk thier safety saving the lives of animals on a daily basis and get no recognition. Its just a shame, these "heroes" hang around all day in thier movie theaters and lounges waiting to go cruise around in thier shiny rides, lift wieghts, cook and go shopping, why do you think they chose to respond to this call??? they were bored...

What you mention does happen a lot and it is a problem. With cell phones, people texting on them, loud radios, etc. etc. etc. drivers now a days really don't pay attention while driving. Our Firefighters are trained well to drive during emergencies and we take all of this into account. However accidents do happen and unfortunately will continue to do so. We do our best!
Alert and questions to Doucet and fire engine drivers: As a pedestrian I will sometimes hear the sirens in the distance but fast approaching. Often ahead of your truck a block or so is a driver with his/her radio blasting at top volume, head rolling and upper body gyrating totally oblivious to what's going around him/her including your fast approaching fire truck.

Instead of pulling over he/she continues driving until your driver, now close behind, lays on the horn. Finally, at the last minute the motorist can hear your warning, but instead of pulling over he/she looks around, as if confused as to what is happening. By this time her/his delayed reaction has slowed your driver down and the motorist may find limited options as to spaces or room to pull over, so bumbles around .

Are you or your drivers aware that this is often the reason cars don't pull over until the last few seconds.? I ask this because you did not mention this potential hazard in your article. Also do you ever get calls complaining about those drivers causing your crucial few seconds delay?

it's bad enough that drivers don't move over when a fire truck is barreling down on them - i see this all the time from my office on P Street - with the sirens going. Imagine if firetrucks and ambulances didn't use the sirens. Some studies say the lights are what alert drivers but anecdotal evidence and years of observations says drivers barely register lights and sounds. It's a fact of life that protecting health and safety means the occasional siren at night or early in the morning.

On another note, it amazes me every time I'm at the lake or a river, despite all of the statistics we hear about there are still very young children on boats and in the water without lifejackets on.
I have been in discussions about this issue with my neighbors and friends from work. ALL of whom say "whats the problem". Firefighters are a tough group of people who work hard and play hard. Maybe these guys are a bunch of "old school" firefighters who can handle a drink, know what to expect during a deployment, and are use to being treated as such. Many forget that the policies of today are somewhat recent. The Sacramento city fire department is a very old fire department, 150+ years. WIth that comes alot of pride and tradition. Changing traditions can be difficult, but the fire service has been the only one to consistantly adopt change for the better. Paramedicine, Hazardous Materials, all types of rescue, in addition to maintaining a goal of arriving at an emergency within a few minutes. Yeah, give the firefighters a break. I also share the opinion with my friends and collegues that Ch 13 hit our heroes below the belt. I will never watch Ch 13 again.

CBS 13 is nothing but a tabloid newscast, and all the staff would do just as good job on "inside edition", "entertainment tonight", or TMZ. I really found their way of presenting the "news" creepy, unprofessional, and misleading. Theses firefighters made a stupid decision and were punished appropriately. END of story!!!

The 'incident' appears minor in the big picture and the timing is suspect. I was in Trinity County last July when there were hundreds of fires burning simultaneously. I saw several fire camps and could not imagine how tough that is. Sometimes people make mistakes in intense situations and the Department handled it appropriately. End of story. Is this what 'news' has devolved to? Making drama where there is none?

I saw the adds for the story and as a result I have stopped watching Channel 13 News, because of the negativity put out by the Sacramento Bee I have disconitued my subscription and many of my family and freinds have as well. If those reporters can claim that have have led unblemished lives I would love to hear it, because they say that the police and firefighters should be held to a higher stander, if you have the power to put your views out as fact to the public you should be held to just as high a standard. My children have seen these adds and asked why the media hates the fire department so much.

Thanks Jim, you and all of our fire fighters are doing a wonderful job. If this is the best CBS13 can do, then no wonder I don't watch them and never will.
