Congrats, Sid!
The Boulevard has loads of potential, and in my four years driving up and down that street on my way to Downtown (work), I have seen vast improvements in the landscaping, maintenance and upkeep, vacancy rates, business facades, etc. The folks at the DP Partnership are working hard to improve and bring some vitality back to the area (by the way, if you're reading this, DP Partnership, we need a farmers market on the boulevard! Call Dan Best!) As for the hotel, i've been to a few parties there and LOVED IT! I am glad to hear that Friedlander is looking for a buyer who will continue the aesthetics and direction..... As for what it could evolve into? I have always thought that the design of the compound and the way the rooms are situated around the central courtyard would make an excellent location for an indie/Etsy/craft/art market (dare i say mall?) and studio compound. Coffee and snack vendors in the courtyard, or perhaps outdoor furniture vendors or sculptural exhibits, etc. or even a weekly farmers market in the courtyard....I, for one, would rent out a room for a small retail space, and i know others who would also be interested. The aesthetic of the place could really lend itself to attracting some interesting vendors. Overall, I love the boulevard and sincerely believe that its time will come!!
wow, sorry to have missed this! Sounds like a fun tour! Congrats to Lynda Walls and all the folks with the Old City Cemetery Committee for finding new and interesting ways to fundraise!
has anyone actually taken this tour?
thanks for your comments! I manage this tour program and have to say, this particular is pretty fun due to the sincere interest and enthusiasm of these particular guides. And - contrary to first comment - tour begins with Sacramento's musical connections from the 1940's and 1950's... before Perry or Seconds were even born. So, yes, while these two local legends are a PART of our story, they are by no means THE story.
P.S. Can i just say... how cool it is that architecture and urban design are such a large part of our community discourse!?!?!
mentioning aesthetics yes, but Venturi? Really? :)
I live in that area, Arden/Del Paso and we ARE under design review... the architecture of the houses is varied and represents a range of historical styles...all of which should be embraced and lauded!! Tony, perhaps we can explore the idea of a neighborhood association or something? There are so many interesting structures in this area... I've always wanted to either photograph them, share them, expose them somehow... if people only knew what they could buy, for practically nothing, in that neighborhood... new blood could really change things in that area!
¡Felicidades a su nuestra vida en Mexico!
Also, thanks to Aaron Zeff and Priority Parking for their patience, generosity and cooperation with the parking spaces needed to finish this project.
Felicidades a La Raza!
UPDATE from Downtown Sacramento Partnership: As mentioned by Stephanie Taylor, the mural IS in the process of being removed so that the new and improved mural can go up. The work to remove the existing vinyl has proven to be a lengthier process than either the DSP or the installers had anticipated, so the process has slowed down a bit, but will resume any day now. The vendor and installers are working diligently to make sure that it is reinstalled properly and we look forward to seeing Taylor's mural returned to its full glory! Any questions can be forwarded to jbeckner@downtownsac.org.
