I'm not going to vilify Starbucks or any other national chains for that matter, but I have begun to make sure that my wife and I only get coffee from the neighborhood cafe rather than SB. Both are about equal distances from our home, but I know one has a larger hill to get over than the other when it comes to staying in business, and I want to be a part of the equation that keeps them there.

Now, when we're on the road and out of town, I will happily stop in on a Starbucks because they are consistent and quick. But all other things being equal, from now on my family makes it a point to support local business FIRST, corporate chains when appropriate.

I lived downtown for years, and I was always amazed by the amount of people who frequented Panda Express. There are DOZENS of great Chinese food choices downtown! Why on earth would anyone chose mediocrity before local quality is beyond me!

50 bucks over the course of a year is four bucks and change a month--that's two coffees at the local coffee shop instead of Starbucks, a record or book every couple of months at the local bookstore or record store instead of Borders, or a trip or two to the locally owned hardware store instead of the Home Depot. Pretty small change. I assume at some point in your month you will spend money on one thing or another, the point is to spend it at a local business vs. a chain. More of that money stays in the local economy.

Harry, what I did was use our current educational system as an example of where you or I can learn more about the many cycles our planet has been through before human existence. I have done more research, please read below

Since the burning of fossil fuels in the last one hundred years the quality of life for humans has improved. Energy use, that is, fossil fuel use, helped achieve stunning progress for humankind in the 20th century. For example, life expectancy in the U.S. in the 20th century nearly doubled.

You notice how the term “Climate Change” has replaced the term “Global Warming”? I bet it’s because the last time noticeable warming was recorded was in 2002. The last very huge warming spike was in 1997-1998. This was a strong, natural phenomenon called El Niño, a warming of the Pacific that in turn warms the air. Because the Pacific is so pervasive in the global average, it raises the temperature. But it doesn't last very long, and after the El Niño subsided, temperatures fell. Again, these phenomena are naturally occurring. They have existed for many millennia prior to human-added greenhouse gases in the air.

Over the past half-century, the sun has become very active, and the sun is more active than it has been for 400 years. Therefore, the sun is likely at its brightest in 400 years. The sharp ups and downs in the sunspot record define the familiar 11-year cycle, or sunspot cycle. The period is not exactly 11 years. It varies between eight and 15 years, and there is no good explanation for the cause of the cycle.

Agricultural experts estimate that technology has improved crop output. But some increase in crop growth, namely about 10 percent, may owe to the added carbon dioxide in the air, that is, the aerial fertilization effect from carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is not a toxic pollutant. It is essential to life on earth.

trapper, I hate to argue. Your intentions are good. Are you suggesting that climate change cannot be happening due to human activities? Are you saying that we need to continue to drill for oil, burn oil, mine for coal burn coal and look for more. I suggest that you do more research than "take a college class about the earth's natural history." Are you arguing we need to change nothing?

The use of fossil fuels is linked to untold human suffering including wars for resources. One example is Japan. They started the war in the Pacific to bogart the region's oil and rubber. Millions died.

People who call themselves "conservative" and don't conserve are disingenuous frauds. Or they don't know about what they are talking.

I don't get it Steve. Are you saying that the interglacial period of 120,000 years ago did not happen and the seas did not rise back then? All you have to do is take a college class about the earth’s natural history to learn this info, the seas has raised hundreds of times in the history of the earth.

It funny you bring up global cooling, it was only 35 years ago scientist around the world claimed that the world was going into a cooling period.

I am a bit surprised by all the fluffy, feel-good stories here about this so-called grass-roots protest. After reviewing national coverage, it appears that FOX aka FAUX 'news' really pumped this up and I can only surmise that right-wing talk radio pushed it heavily too. The general consensus amongst reporters is that the core of this 'movement' is crying sour grapes after losing control from the White house to local legislatures. Most people indicated, via signs, pure hatred for Obama as if the current economic condition had nothing to do with the previous administration's failures from their war on terrorism to managing corporate greed on Wall Street.

No, but until now there has not been a organized movement to change directions. The Democrats love this stuff and the Republicans have looked the other way for way to long. The bailouts I believe broke the camels back and as well as stimulus money that can't be accounted for.

I believe its all part of a plan to make the value of the dollar worthless and a new global currency will then be created. If this happens, the dollar will be worthless and our ability to buy products from other counties will cost us dearly.

You love this stuff Harry... didn't you vote for change? Watch out because here it comes.

You are cranking out entire sentences now!!!!
Be careful, drink fluids, take breaks and remember to pace yourself.
Actually I take that back - you are doing full sentences, but none with any content, just more questions.

Think about it. There are more than two ways to consider that statement or any other. Do you take kindly to being called "less than American"? Or not a patriot.? Some Americans have expropriated the term "patriot"; some have made the term "liberal" a pejorative. Some reserve the appellation f"American" for themselves and those who agree with them and, in many cases, look like them. Apparently many in tomorrow's action want to "take back" America. Take back America from whom? For whom? On what pretext? Another question: Who are the 'real Americans". I always thought I was.

Well Waldo, since the majority of people in Sacramento work for the government they can take the day off by using one of their dozens of yearly "sick days."

And as for taking the day off "to shout the obvious!" I would say that if you care about taxation or are pissed about the bailouts, you have a duty as a citizen to take the day off work to show your support for the movement. Many countries do not allow citizens to have rallies such as the Tea Party, in some countries you would be shot or imprisoned for speaking out against the government. I love our freedom in this country and I for one feel lucky to have the right to attend this rally. Don't take your freedoms for granted; and make sure you exercise them often.

Another thread about the tea parties. Yea. Let the rants begin.

I am curious to see how large Sacramento's party will turn out to be. Anyone dare to wager a rounded guess?

The population of Sacramento County is 1,374,724. Obama's national approval rating is 71%, leaving 29% of the population who would likely show up to a tea party. If you rounded that number up to 30% of Sacramento County's population, you could surmise that attendance could theoretically be in the 350,000 to 400,000 range.

My guess is that the actual number will in the 2,000 to 2,500 range, which is still a pretty good turn out for a protest. Protests, even big ones, don't change anything (MLK's march on the mall is the one exception), but they usually make good spectacles.

Any baggers out there bringing big puppets? I love big puppets.

(PS, just so you know, I suck at math).

C-word. Conservation. Use less. We have increased population, constant pressures from special interests and wildlife (who have no voice). The experts appear divided. Certainly they are influenced by special interests whether it is enviros, the fishing community, agribusiness or others. I would tend to think that business as usual, i.e. more dams will solve nothing except to enrich those who build a maintain the structures. Conservation is just a start and is the lowest tech solution. Conserve now; while it's still an option.

Sorry to be a jerk, but what do you mean on “the verge of collapse”? That the Delta has levee falures? It always has and it always will, I was there on levee patrol in ’97 and I remember the massive ’86 flood when I was kid. I’m not sure what going “sustainable” is going to mean when the next high water comes (and it will come.) The levees need to be maintained.
I don’t think another Dam would hurt, if it wasn’t for the Dams, Sacramento might have flooded along time ago. I think a lot of the ecological problems are in large part to sucking too much water out to send to So.Cal. I can’t solve the state’s water issues here though.

Our oil companies should be federally regulated for profit. The news tells us of profits in the billions for each quarter that is insane. how much greed does it take to be happy. Go ahead and add a tax to us in california, but get the oil companies from federal regulaion to drop their price of oil. Smud and PGE need legislation to get an increase in their operating expenses why not the same for the oil companies?
What gives when Venezuela and Argentina pay in US currency - 16 cents and 8 cents a gallon? While this is not the end all solution it will certainly give the American consumer something to cheer about in this depression and all the while work on getting alternative fuels, like the electric car moving forward with greater speed. our environment cant take any more fossil fuels.

You're welcome Sarah. This has become a real passion for me. I'm actually in the process of researching and writing a book on this very topic. In this economy, I can only hope a publisher will see the value in such a text. Be thankful to Harry Osibin and the Bee for printing it. It didn't make it into the Chronicle and a few other papers. You're right. It is a very frustrating time for all of us and it's helpful to focus on something positive we can all do to turn that frustration around. It's also a valuable lesson for our children and friends, when they see us doing something for others, while so many are struggling. It's a great place to start. Like CalJim said, it's a win-win-win.

Thank you for this simple and concise piece. I would also add to consider donating other blood products like platelets, which take a longer amount of time to donate but are extremely important. I have utilized some of my "free time" while out of work to contribute to the health of others in what feels like a very direct way. It has healing benefits to me also, knowing that I can provide such vital contribution simply by giving what my (thankfully) healthy body produces. In what can be a frustrating time not hearing back from potential employers and sometimes overwhelmed by selfish thoughts, I may not have money to donate but I have time and platelets.

That's really great CalJim. I only found out I was O negative when I was approaching 40 and it lit a spark in me. And now, with the Alyx machine, they can take my red blood cells, separate the plasma and it can go directly to infants and trauma centers, where they try to only use O blood. And there's nothing weird, CalJim, about selflessly helping others. I also feel that we are entering an age with our amazing new president, where this type of behavior can become the norm. That's what I'm hoping, anyway.

Yes, thanks for raising this worthwhile issue. Giving blood takes only 30-60 minutes and saves lives. I received an award last Sunday from Blood Source for donating 1,000 pints of whole blood, plasma and platelets, joining the prestigious Millenial Club. Okay, so it's a little weird, but I like helping people and the nurses and technicians are the nicest people in the world. And besides that, it's an economic activity because you're keeping people employed and the surplus blood is shipped outside of Sacramento resulting in dollars flowing back in to the local economy. Good deal! And they always have great snacks and refreshments at the snack bar after you donate. So it's a Win-Win-Win-Win-Win proposition. Donate a pint of blood and save a life.

So we're sent to another post on another site to read more by the same author, including a comment in THAT post saying that more will appear in another post (at an unknown time and place). Please post articles rather than treasure hunts. If there are links to support an already complete article ("for more information...") that's great, but just linking us to something else that appears somewhere else is somewhat spam-like.

An even easier solution: Don't bother jacking up the gas tax, just cut some of that government welfare spending by cutting all those new freeway projects out of the state budget.

Caltrans is going to spend about $100 million on HOV lanes through Rancho Cordova, and only after a huge legal battle are they willing to spend $8 million to enhance light-rail service and bike trails along the same corridor, enhancements that will help reduce traffic more than adding lanes (and adding lanes to a freeway to ease traffic is kind of like dieting by buying bigger pants!)

Maybe they need a new name--instead of calling it a "freeway," just start calling them "expensiveways."

I agree with you completely, Paul. It is maddening and wrong. Something tells me, however, the days are numbered for this offensive and prejudicial methodology for screening. Either the tests work or they don't.
