tax rates on businesses are the lowest they've been since the '20s. Boeing, B of A, ExxonMobil and other giants have paid no federal income taxes in the last few years. Oil is the most profitable industry in this country yet you pay more in fed income taxes than the corps. Prosecute? I don't know; money talks. Tax corruption is ruining the political debate in this country. I know the info from media. Common sense works, too. Do you actually believe that working people have the capability to effect your life more than banks, insurance companies and health providers? Tax cuts don't create jobs. Otherwise the Bush tax cuts of 2001 should have us rolling in employment. We're not. BTW what part of my comment is egregious? You probably oppose the crash tax but don't agree that there is some other reason working people are scrambling for crumbs while the richest Americans are, well, rich.

"Change as in changing things back to the way they feel they used to be" is the crux of it--they are longing for a past that never was, an idealized Ward and June Cleaver world they remember from television, not reality. All this patriotic fervor is an insult and disgrace to our nation's real principles, and a mockery of its real history.

I appreciate your comment, but am not as optimistic as you. I have attended only one tea party and noticed how homogeneous and vitriolic it was. Yes, you are completely right in that these are probably first time activists. Perhaps they liked things as they were. But when Barack Hussein Obama took the oath of office, these "patriots" started looking for "socialists and communists" under every bed and began using coded references to our having a president who does not look like them.

Patrick J.-Please tell me where it is an I'll buy gas there. Midtown has lower prices especially at ARCO. Why would gas be cheaper in the ghetto?

BTW, there is no free market in this country. The "free market" that is espoused in this country is a very simplistic concept to address very complex situations.

Re: Grocery prices. Over the years I have learned the citizens pay more at neighborhood stores than at crosstown chains. The only way these businesses can compete (if only marginally) to buy from coop distributors, such as Western Brands or something. Mercada Loco is one and they still probably are pennies higher. (Should I phrase it, people pay more in the ghetto. The cheapest gas is always found in more affluent areas.)

trapper, I hate to argue. Your intentions are good. Are you suggesting that climate change cannot be happening due to human activities? Are you saying that we need to continue to drill for oil, burn oil, mine for coal burn coal and look for more. I suggest that you do more research than "take a college class about the earth's natural history." Are you arguing we need to change nothing?

The use of fossil fuels is linked to untold human suffering including wars for resources. One example is Japan. They started the war in the Pacific to bogart the region's oil and rubber. Millions died.

People who call themselves "conservative" and don't conserve are disingenuous frauds. Or they don't know about what they are talking.

Think about it. There are more than two ways to consider that statement or any other. Do you take kindly to being called "less than American"? Or not a patriot.? Some Americans have expropriated the term "patriot"; some have made the term "liberal" a pejorative. Some reserve the appellation f"American" for themselves and those who agree with them and, in many cases, look like them. Apparently many in tomorrow's action want to "take back" America. Take back America from whom? For whom? On what pretext? Another question: Who are the 'real Americans". I always thought I was.

C-word. Conservation. Use less. We have increased population, constant pressures from special interests and wildlife (who have no voice). The experts appear divided. Certainly they are influenced by special interests whether it is enviros, the fishing community, agribusiness or others. I would tend to think that business as usual, i.e. more dams will solve nothing except to enrich those who build a maintain the structures. Conservation is just a start and is the lowest tech solution. Conserve now; while it's still an option.

William, good knowledge! I love the restored PCCs in SF. They run full much of the time and that contrasts with the old motorcoach service along the Embarcadero route 32 which ran empty. The regular "F" line is restored units not from SF. I believe they saw service in KC and Toronto. The Peter Witt cars are actually from Milan and date from post-WWII. There is only one White Front car known to exist and it is sitting in front of the Mint awaiting more work. Thanks for the chance to talk trolley!

Why cannot the scavengers sue the city over burdensome regulation?
There is so much gray area here. The new trash cans in town are already stamped with "Do Not Scavenge." One deterrent. It is now against the law to scavenge on public property. Two deterrents. Trespass is illegal. Three deterrents. Theft is illegal. Another deterrent. Are the pickers going to stop? No, there's value in our refuse. Will law enforcement fall on these guys? Depends, I guess. I don't know.
In the 90s in SF recycle operators used to praise pickers as being a key link in the recycling chain. Now, with all the legal and ethical questions, they don't do it so much. I'm a greenie who likes less government, especially fewer laws that are unenforceable.
Many of these comments assume that the miscreants are homeless and would accept assistance. Those are facts not in evidence. The pickers may consider themselves workers, making a living in the only way they can. Are they stealing? I don't know. Some of the pickers on my block are friendly, some not. I think they have quit rummaging through our stuff because we don't buy two liter bottles of soda anymore and our garbage is full of bagged, used kitty litter.
Some residents (a good friend in SF) defeat the pickers by selling their recyclables themselves. Others with the time only put out the materials just before the recyclers arrive. I've done that. Leaving dedicated bags of bottles for the pickers leaves government out of the loop. Thanks, Tony.

An old friend in North Hollywood used to leave newspapers and bottles and cans out at dusk and the next morning they were always gone. Ownership of that material is an issue. When we leave clothing at the curb on pick up days, I keep an eye on it until it's picked up. I figure I own the clothes until the truck takes them away. Apologies to the pickers, but that's the way I like it.

Although I agree completely with Mark, I ask visa vis public transit, "Who cares?" Public transit is perhaps the ultimate societal field leveler and in most cases it's a bargain when compared to an 11 mpg Tahoe. Yet it is derided and ridiculed and fiscally starved and is a cultural stepchild as far as public respect. We Americans love our shiny vehicles and like to look down on others. Of course, from a bus you look down on a Suburban. Losing Sunday service would be "embarrassing", Mayor Johnson. Maybe no one has said it quite this way, but a world class city has night and weekend public transit service. I am ambivalent about "free" parking. Parking is not 'free" anywhere; the cost is just hidden.

Wal Mart is about profit. They will maximize that profit anyway, that's ANY way they can. I'm gonna stop because I can't spend anytime on this issue. Wal Mart will become the country's leading retailer of organic foods, but there's profit in it. They've tried to reclassify what qualifies as "organic". The Wal Mart in which I made purchases yesterday has both surly and friendly employees. Some good Wal Mart employees may not be employable elsewhere. I don't like shopping at Wal Mart. I appreciate the debate about Wal Mart in this thread. There are no easy answers.

Thanks for your comments. Opinion is the currency of talk radio. Whether it is left, right or center, talk show hosts are spouting opinions. They might do research to come up with information to back their opinions, but its not necessary. Again let me ask, "About what is Rush right?" No one answers that question. I guess it's easier to call someone a name.

The Bee is great. They will post a bland story on the new administration or some issue and then the flamers are turned loose. Frankly I'd rather read this comment section than the Bee's anyday. Without going into a lot of tech details, we can agree the waste should not be transported, it should be reduced and producing alternative sources of energy is good, if problematic (to say the least). These issues of conflict-of-interest, misrepresentation and the rest cry for discussion and leadership. Can the Council and the Mayor engage each other and the public?

Sucked? Please explain. No wait; don't explain. Irrelevant? Matter of opinion. I like Randi Rhodes even though she is a bit shrill sometimes. I agree with a lot of what she says. MIke Malloy puts on a good show, but was fired by Air America and hired by Nova M. Competition is the American way.

Air America is still on the air and going. They aren't on in Sacramento anymore. The last Air America offering locally was canceled about a year ago. Air America has had multiple ownerships and I doubt if they are making money. They have been mismanaged to say the least. I'm not prepared to describe the ways in which they blew it. Market share zero? How do you know? Let me assume your point is: Right wing radio (the Rushes, the Savages) is more popular. You are right. And the flying saucer show on KFBK overnights is popular. And "I Love Lucy" is (still) popular. "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" is popular.

I'm not trying to silence descent (sic). It's funny you ask the same question as I. Why would the Democrats give this radio-guy any notice at all? Socialist policies? Socialism for whom? Socialism is defined as government ownership of the means of production. I haven't heard anyone call for the government ownership of anything, well, maybe, responsibility. Apparently growing government with faith-based initiatives, a whole new cabinet department (proposed by dems) for "homeland security", illegal wire-tapping, privatizing our military, subjourning major conflicts-of-interest in contracting, bungling into the most deadly terrorist attack by foreigners on our soil, maintaining secret prisons, ending habeus corpus, cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans during a time of (two) wars and the flushing of an American city can be ignored as critique of a Republican administration.
Kool Aid? Obama? Please be serious and stop quoting nonsense from witless commentators on other boards.
You don't know what I think about President Obama, a mainstream Democrat, from Illinois. An industrial state and a coal-producing state with a big city immortalized by Carl Sandburg. "Stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders". Chicago.

This president does not use fear as a rhetorical tactic. He uses hope. That may be branding, but it's good branding. Heck, he won the election. He hasn't promised to "give" anyone anything. He's called on Americans to work hard with him. He has not said go shopping, take a vacation or anything frivolous like that. He comes off cocky to some. Apparently, that's an admirable trait in a Republican and a despicable one in a Democrat.
Your characterizations are worthy...of Rush.

I certainly do not believe in silencing decent (sic). I am questioning his relevance, which is a fair game. Economics is guess work, even for the pros. How many overweight college drop outs can have opinions and pontificate about things about which they know nothing? Rush has already said he hopes Obama fails. Why? Mr. Limbaugh is factually wrong on almost everything, his insights are way off the mark, he is more of a hypocrite than most of us and he is still very, very popular. The show must go on.

I thought about it some more and human-powered transport is the emission-free way to go. But nobody is going to walk or bike from Midtown to Tahoe. Unless they have a looooong weekend!

I replied once but as above the computer ate my words. Rail and bus are probably the best. There used to be a ski train from the Bay Area to Reno for skiers and gamers. We took it once in the '90s. Don't think it operates any more. Charter bus, I should say. Make sure the company and driver are reliable. Private auto is probably the last choice. Subject to traffic jams, delays and running engines with heaters on. Buses also are subject to the whims of 50 and 80. One talk radio host has always maintained that the most stable, safe and efficient private vehicle for the Tahoe trek is the full-size American sedan such as the old Ford Crown Victoria, so loved by law enforcement. He might be right, but I don't agree with him on much of anything.

The ski resorts are individually taking steps to green their businesses with varying degrees of success.

Does anyone care? Some activists do. And some believe that winter sports are an intrusion into natural habitat and should be avoided. There is a spectrum of opinion and an opportunity for debate without end.
