By the early 1950’s bed bugs were nearly eliminated from the North American continent as a result of the widespread use of DDT. Their numbers were so decimated that generations raised after that time thought they were a myth, perpetuated in a nursery rhyme. Unfortunately, bed bugs are very real. The banning of DDT and the marked increase in international travel, have rapidly given us a resurgence of these nasty pests. Their increase started slowly at first, sort of like the front side of a bell curve, but then accelerated and intensified. We now appear to be on the steep and rapidly rising back side of the curve, with no idea of when the population will peak or when the curve will flatten out.
It took six months to get bed bugs out of my house. It wasn't quick or easy, but it can be done. You can watch videos on how to inspect your home at www.bedbugsnorthwest.com. If you know you have bed bugs and can afford to, try to find a company that provides thermal heat treatment for bed bugs. Then you can be done with bed bugs in one day. Bed bugs are a scourge and being able to identify them quickly is key to getting rid of them faster.

Now I notice the flies are again back, and now flying around our front door. We have pigeons on our roof and surrounding homes. We didn't invite them, however a neighbor in back of us put a pigeon/bird feeder out - and now I'm sure they are roosting on our roof. HELP HELP HELP. Do those pigeon deterrent spikes work?
For someone that moved into a house from outside the region and a few months later came home to a room full of termites due to swarm season I find the article very good and informative. For those of you that are anti-business take a look around, almost every article on this site you could say is a commercial. UFL brings pro football to Sac - they should have bought an ad, take it down! Agent Ribbons leaves sac, they should have bought an ad what a commercial for their band! XOSO's Winter 2010 Volleyball Champions, that group should have bought an ad! The purists in this group kill me. If you are worried about the financial stability of SacPress click on their banner ads and show your support by patronizing their advertisers. If you don’t like an article don’t read it and don’t comment on it – let it die a digital death.

Picton, in the central city street gutters are also a favorite place for rats, mice, cockroaches and other vermin to thrive. I've see all in my many walks as these creatures munch on careless and thoughtless people's discarded partially eaten sandwiches, fast food leftovers, candy, partially empty sugared coffee cups, soft drink and beer bottles (yes, they like beer and soft drinks), discarded plastic pre-packaged containers from convenience markets, oranges that drop from the ornamental orange trees as well as grapefruits on the ground, etc.

Well fed cats and dogs are not too much help but instead are often intimidated by large rats as I saw one day. A cat curiously extended its paw as if to test what that "animal" was in the gutter eating a walnut. The rat dropped its walnut and jumped on top of the gutter and stood on its hind legs in an attack mode and the timid cat ran.
