McDonald’s USA on Monday appealed Sacramento Planning Commission’s decision to deny a drive-through restaurant on the corner of Stockton Boulevard and 2nd Avenue in the city’s Oak Park neighborhood. The action sends the issue to City Council for a final vote and extends a nearly two-year debate about the project and its placement in an urban corridor adjacent to medical offices, hospitals and an obesity clinic on Stockton Boulevard and single-family homes on 2nd Avenue. Senior Planner Lindsey Alagozian said city staff is reviewing the appeal, which presents McDonald’s arguments against the city’s decision. McDonald’s representatives did not respond to questions about the appeal. The Pla
Health, safety and urban livability weighed against economic and employment issues Thursday night as city planning commissioners voted six to one to oppose a drive-through McDonald’s on the corner of Stockton Boulevard and 2nd Avenue in Oak Park. Attorney Michael Di Geronimo said McDonald’s will consider appealing the decision, which would send the project to City Council for a final vote. While the commission was clear on its authority to vote only on the special permit required for the drive-through, a wide range of speakers expressed the difficulty of looking at just one aspect without addressing the whole issue. During a nearly two-hour debate, residents, community activists, doctor
Sacramento City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Thursday to discuss a proposed drive-through McDonald’s on the corner of Stockton Boulevard and 2nd Avenue in Oak Park. “This is unique site,” said Lindsey Alagozian, senior planner for the city. “It’s an infill lot that has been vacant for some time and both the city and the community want it revitalized.” The proposed McDonald’s is a long-running debate as community groups including Healthy Development for Oak Park, WALK Sacramento and Oak Park Neighborhood Association express concerns about safety, pedestrian and bike access, appropriate land use, proposed hours and quality of life. More than 1,700 residents signed a petiti
Police were absent from the Occupy UC Davis rally at noon today in the quad as thousands of students and community members united in a show of solidarity with students who were doused with pepper spray by campus police during a nonviolent protest Friday. Students and faculty both used the rally to call for the resignation of Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi. Students involved in Friday’s attack took to the mike with accounts of being paralyzed with fear and pain from police brutality. Several students said they were threatened with being shot by the police. Others testified they were pulled from the group, pepper-sprayed and arrested without any care or treatment for the spray that temporari
Carly DuHain refers to herself as an underground musician. No representation, no management, just a singer songwriter trying to make it in Sacramento on her own volition. Aiming to be successful in a town loaded with musicians and bands, DuHain has her own approach. “I do the opposite of everyone else,” she says. “I don’t really follow self-promotion trends.” She outlines everything a musician needs to do to be known, working every local media angle, playing every venue, never stopping. “I’d just rather take my time and do it organically.” While her gut-instinct style rarely leads her to play the same venue back-to-back, DuHain has two upcoming shows at the Fox & Goose. Saturday, Sept.
