Talking trash in Midtown

Midtown Business Association’s new litter removal specialist, Ray Brocker, 25, is more than just a trash picker. Armed with his trash picker and a trash cart fully equipped with garbage bags, gloves and a water jug, he struts through Midtown to keep the streets clean. Brocker picks up trash four times a week, Monday through Thursday and on Second Sundays for five hours each day—rain or shine. He said he has had some interesting findings collecting litter on his routes— $40 floating in a gutter, a body pillow, and even human fecal matter. On a normal day he said he finds a lot of every day things: discarded cigarette packs, parking passes and iced coffee cups are the most frequent. “I’m

Scavengers hunt the grid

Over 30 teams of bike scavengers took to the streets of downtown Sacramento Saturday in a race against time to interpret clues, hunt for items and complete challenges for the Bicycle Kitchen’s annual Hunt the Grid bike scavenger hunt. If cyclists didn’t know Sacramento before the hunt, they sure do now. The hunt, now in its third year, is an event where teams of four hit the pavement and try to solve clues based on well-known venues and random oddities of Sacramento. Bike Kitchen staff member and event organizer Ryan Sharpe, 32, planned the event with his staff non-stop for six weeks. “No one is going to look at the city in the same way,” he said. The city was broken up into quadrants,

District 30 brings life to K Street Mall

In an attempt to bring vitality to the once desolate K Street Mall in downtown Sacramento, District 30, one of the newest night clubs, is still thriving after four months of business. You can’t miss the bright lights of District 30. The glowing LED projected sign they have at their entrance is enticing. If it wasn’t your friends who lured you there, or what you’ve heard, it was the sign. There appeared to be a hustle and bustle about the area which wasn’t too crazy for a Friday night, but it was still early – 11 p.m. You’re greeted by multiple doormen who guard the black velvet ropes to enter the club. The cover is $15 unless you sign up on the e-mail guest list days in advance on thei

Conversation about: SacQuotes: Safe at Second Saturday?

I think Second Saturday is like any other public event. It being on a Saturday night definitely heightens foot traffic volume, nightlife and bar goers, but bad things happen all of the time. It's just really disheartening when bad things occur, and we even have to discuss the safety of checking out a bit of art on a Saturday night. I think what the real issue is, is not the safeness of the event itself, but of the precautions, and the way in which the city responds to these problems.

Conversation about: An Evening with Gloria Steinem

I thought this article about the Gloria Steinem lecture was very moving, especially coming from such a profound figure. She raised a lot of questions about where we are as a current society, and how we as individuals, and as women (and men) can be a part of prosperity and moving forward. The points she addressed about the media in particular stand out because the media is a big part of what shapes our minds, and is often a teacher. We as people need to step outside of that notion, educate ourselves, teach each other, and respect each other in order for change to really occur.
