This gallery has turned out to be very disappointing. Artists included seem to be friends of the organizers and not necessarily based on quality or inclusion. The same artists are featured over-and-over. There is no call to Sacramento artists or judgment/jury process. I do not know how you can have a space this size and have any quality art this way, plus, this does not promote the local community or the talent in Sac.... it's just another, since I own the gallery or run the space, I can promote my friends. The upcoming show is said to be for women, but the many talented women artists in Sac were not invited to submit for consideration. The shows including so called 'veterans' were the same. It's a gimmick, just like using breast cancer awareness, not something good for art, local artists, or the community. Sad.

lets clear a few things up Jim.

1) If you have any LOGICAL concerns with VIBE, David and I will be more than happy to meet with you. Having said that, your incredibly false bantering on this site is unnecessary, unless you are simply trying to prove your case as a fool.

2) VIBE was created under the Sacramento Youth Commission, of which Jay Schenirer has no control.

3) To say that Ben Wangerg "runs" VIBE only furthers your persona as an ill-informed critic. Although Ben did great work representing SCOE on the VIBE Board, he has not been a part of the organization for over six months.

4) Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson has absolutely no involvement in VIBE, other than being a supporter. And even if he did, are you proposing that would be a bad thing? Are mayors not supposed to support local youth lead non-profits?

5) The City of Sacramento has zero involvement in VIBE, other than being supporters, so your wrong again. (common theme?)

6) "The senior Shinerer is a close Johnson ally who Johnson is pushing for City Council to have more votes on the council." REALLY? thats funny. If this were true, you would think Mayor Johnson would have endorsed him huh?

7) learn how to spell SCHENIRER before you attempt to falsify.

I look forward to speaking with you in the future.

Casey - I thought I would share another resource that I think is crucial. Sometimes, we tend to forget after soem time has passed, just how much HELP is still needed. To that end, I, a local Sacramento man, have launched a global movement from Facebook to help Haiti.

The premise is that we DO forget, and this is a tragedy that can ONLY get worse if we do, so we must take time to REMEMBER Haiti in the month of March - the March For Haiti movement seeks 20 thousand pledges of action in March to remember and help Haiti victims.

Started right here in Sacramento, and reaching out globally, with members already on board from Brazil, Ecuador, Africa, Canada and across America.

I don't think this link will work, unless you edit and add it above....but I will post it anyhow, for your readers to use.

http://marchforhaiti.org - or directly to the Facebook Cause at http://apps.facebook.com/causes/438728

Hopefully, JOIN so that we can, as a global community, Remember and Help the victims in March...two months AFTER the disaster.

VIBE has gone to meetings with youths of all races, and financial backgrounds to promote VIBE and what it has to represent for Sacramento.

The Red Cross is focusing on three areas – food, clean drinking water and other relief items such as hygiene kits, blankets, tarps, sleeping mats, tents and water containers. The relief items are helping more than 10,000 families (50,000 people) to date – with plans to increase this number. About 79 percent of the funds spent or committed by the American Red Cross have been for food and water; 18 percent have been for shelter; and the rest have been for health and family services.

The senior Shinerer is a close Johnson ally who Johnson is pushing for City Council to have more votes on the council.

As a prominent African American political leader, who I will not disclose the name of stated, after they stopped laughing, "this is a bunch white prep school kids and they will have no impact on disenfranchised youth." Well one look at photo 4 surely supports that statement.

Sadly, I agree. This "lounge" seems to have been inspired for two reasons only, A: It is an election year and Sr. wants street cred and appear to be a youth advocate, and Jr. wants to pad his resume to Stanford and Yale.

I can guarantee you one thing...private donations may not be hard to find. I will bet $5 bucks that donations start coming out of the woodwork as the election cycle heats up. Developers and lobbyists who want to own Shinerer's vote on the council should he be elected.

The sad part of this is that the money the City is spending could have provided more youth services through the Boys & Girls Club and other youth programs that are truly effective.

It's kind of a different ballgame downtown, because there aren't very many commercial outlets along K Street--mostly restaurants--but I did notice that several restaurants and convenience stores remained open far later than usual, which is a start. Temple Coffee was closed because they had planned another event the same day, but next month they will also be open.

I think the 106 degree temperatures discouraged some folks from attending, but it was hardly just vendors--there was an appreciable amount of foot traffic.

FFT also brings up the very important point that Second Saturday did not blow up overnight. It originally started in 1992, and it took years before people started to turn out in appreciable numbers. Only in the last year or two, after about 15 years, has Second Saturday started to really bring people out in large numbers--so yeah, I'd give Design Downtown a few months to catch up. And if that happens, I'm willing to wager that more doors will be open on K Street...at least on those evenings.

We were happy to get this event under our belt, so to speak, so that we could look for ways to improve the event, work out some logistical issues, and continue to build something great downtown. We are collecting feedback from vendors this week and if any of your readers have feedback please fire away.

There was a pretty good turnout for the meeting, and it seemed like people had a good time. The story about the Lou Reed concert (It wasn't oversold, but rather massively undersold) was from RE/Search's "Incredibly Strange Music, Volume I," in an interview with Lux Interior and Poison Ivy of the massively influential band THE CRAMPS. Lux and Ivy met here in Sacramento in the early seventies, before moving to Cleveland, a city they considered much more cool than Sacramento at the time. Although they moved away before forming THE CRAMPS, their horror-movie influenced tongue-in-cheek rockabilly style has been reflected in a lot of Sacramento bands. Bands like the Groovie Ghoulies, the Troublemakers, the Losin' Streaks, the Secretions, the Li'l Bunnies and many others combined working-class rock & roll sensibilities with a solid sense of the ridiculous.

Vito,
I take from your statements regarding my event, that you were obviously not there, or that you just enjoy telling stories. Which ever side of the fence you land on, I find your statements offensive and undermining. I created and successfully produced an enjoyable family friendly event that I was proud to have my own family attend. I do not appreciate you lying about the average age of the attendees or the lack of children's events. My nieces enjoyed the clowns, art projects, playground, Popsicle & hot dog vendors, dunk tank and music. The mural art contest in no way mirrored graffiti, in fact the theme of the mural contest was EQUALITY. Attendance wasn't low on Sunday nor did it overtake the park, quite the contrary. We did much better than expected and I partly have you to thank you for that. It happened that all of the media you called did come to see what was going on in the park. They reported on a pleasant family event, briefly touched on your complaints and then aired a story promoting my event. Please understand I am not interested in, and will not tolerate your attempts to take away my right as a resident, and don't forget also a neighbor (that's right I don't live very far from you) to enjoy the amenity's in my neighborhood with all of the other residents that live there. I am sure you could have learned a thing or two if you had actually gone to the event and took the time to actually speak to the artists, vendors, musicians, family's and staff instead of holding up in your home and calling me on the cell phone every few hours asking me to turn down the music. Oh, one more thing; I went to your house to check the sound, strange but I just couldn't hear a thing..........
P.S. Its bad karma to speak poorly about your neighbors in a public forum.
