One of things that really attracted me to Crucial Conversations training is the authors claim that these skills will allow you to say anything to anyone at anytime. I agree that Managers who support open communication are deeply appreciated. Equally, sometimes the Crucial Conversations are most important in environments where silence reigns. One of our Healthcare Executive Ops Team members expressed a deep sense of satisfaction after he learned how to safely express his opposing opinions in group settings, Getting the courage to hold the conversations is worthwhile everytime.

Good point markitect .... about 80% of the work environment culture is tied to a manager's "stuff". The authors of the book also emphasize creating an atmosphere of safety in order for crucial conversations to occur. This can be created by managers both verbally (inviting tone of voice, not yelling, etc.) and non-verbally (open body language, affirming nods, no leers, etc.). Also, organizations that align their performance management and reward system with innovation and risk taking are well suited to have crucial conversations.

It can be difficult to initiate them though - encouragement and a positive attitude from the manager can go a long way towards creating and atmosphere of acceptance for this kind of important communication.

Great questions Colleen .... Most of the guests that come on my show are affiliated with the Sacramento Organization Development Network, Sac Chapter of the American Society of Training & Development, Linkedin, and others as a result of watching the show on Channel 17. Some I know through my work as the Organization Development Manager with the City of Sacramento or as a teacher at various graduate schools. Guests are lined up through the summer - there's alot of expertise in Sacramento and they are all VERY eager to volunteer and share their tips to help viewers get a job, develop their career or business, or improve morale and productivity. I keep those goals in mind when I come up with topics. I'm trying to offer something each week that will appeal to the job seeker, the career minded, the new or expanding business owner, or leaders, managers and supervisors.

I'm always looking for new guests or individuals that have an expertise to help viewers / readers find and create good work or have a story to tell that can inform and inspire others!

Thanks Mark - interesting idea. My thinking for using "Good Work NOW!" in the title is to let readers know it is a weekly column, which may not be conveyed without it .... I'm wondering if there is another option .... One example is that Sac Press reframed this week's article title as "This Week on Good Work NOW!", and left out "toxic co-workers", on the "culture" page ....

Help me understand why you think this weekly column is an infomercial? All newspapers have some kind of column that offers tips for business, careers, etc. (ie, Career Builder in the Sunday Sac Bee). This is essentially the same thing with a supplemental video component. And, as stated in the background/disclosure, this column and accompanying TV show is a non-commerical, volunteer effort. The definitions I found on the web indicate that informercials are commercial with their intent (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=ig&defl=en&q=define:infomercial&ei=PptJSuOLO4XQsgO526noBw&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title),

I encourage other readers and Sac Press to weigh in on this. Thanks.

According to Wikipedia...

An E-meter is an electronic device used in some forms of the Dianetics and Scientology auditing. The device is a variation of a Wheatstone bridge, which measures electrical resistance. It is formally known as the Hubbard Electrometer, for the Church's founder, L. Ron Hubbard.

The Church of Scientology restricts the use of the E-meter to trained professionals, treating it as "a religious artifact used to measure the state of electrical characteristics of the 'static field' surrounding the body". The meter is believed to reflect or indicate whether or not the confessing person has been relieved from spiritual impediment of his sins". It can only be used by Scientology ministers or ministers-in-training and does not diagnose or cure anything. The E-meters used by the Church of Scientology are manufactured at the Church of Scientology's Golden Era Productions facility.

Sacramento Works has many locations in the region. Go to http://www.seta.net to find the one closest to you. I find that the HIllsdale Blvd. has the most comprehensive services. Everything is FREE when you fill out the registration form and submit "right to work documents". Networking opportunities, job postings, career coaches, job skills assessments and typing tests with certificates.
Workshops for soft skills, resume writing, interviews and free access to their computers, fax machines and copier. You can also have your resume put onto resume quality paper at no costs.
There is also an EDD representative available on Tue/Thur.
EDD also considers attending and participation with Sacramento Works as "active job search" because you are improving your skills to obtain employment.
The positive atmosphere helps keep you focused the staff is very supportive.

This really looks interesting. I am looking forward to the day they create something that helps us in a Micro Niche. Like how to hire consultants and contractors - not just the guys who remodel our homes - the other contractors out there.

I am also interested in finding out how to obtain grants or learning about bidding items from our local govt.
