I agree. This is a scandal. Who ever heard of a newspaper or magazine publishing a humorous first-person essay?</content>

    <content type="text">I absolutely love your article. I found myself laughing completely through it (and I know a $425.00) fine is nothing to laugh at.) The way it is written is wonderful. THUMBS UP!&#xD;
&#xD;
On another note, I've seen people acually win, or case dismissd. One was dismissed when it was not clear that the individual, in court was actually the individual in the videotape. It appeared someone else was driving the car. Another won when they insisted on knowing when the camera light was last tested/ inspected for accuracy and their had been some type of flaw... I didn't win (lol) the photo was so good, so clear on me heck OIan Mills couldn't have done a better job (lol) I wanted to ask for 8 / 10 glossy print copies that's how impressed I was with the photo and video. And no sense fighting a loosing battle after watching others fight and loose and seeing I was wrong, I too plead no contest. Again, wonderful article! I learned humor goes a long way and makes a much better article. Job well done.</content>

    <content type="text">I'm trying to get my head around what you are trying to communicate to me. So you're saying something like, "It's too early in the month to say whether the weather is unseasonable, because May typically gets at least one storm a year, hence the 0.5 average." (I would say the mean rainfall would give us a better idea of what is typical, but nevertheless...) So if we get another storm at the end of the month, then THAT storm would be unseasonable.

I'm saying that Friday's storm has already surpassed the monthly average, so that in itself would qualify it as being unseasonable.

But again, semantics.</content>

    <content type="text">I took a quick look around the web. According to http://countrystudies.us/united-states/weather/California/sacramento.htm, May gets an average of 0.3 an inch of rain. It is the forth driest month of the year. June, July and August see less rain. Now I guess it is a matter of semantics as to whether a record storm in the forth driest month of the year counts as unseasonable, but I'm sticking by adjective.</content>

    <content type="text">The homeless don't want to mooch, if you offered them a place to stay their pride would prevent them (most of them) from taking you up on the offer anyway. They just want to be left to their lives, like totalderelict said. They know how to take care of themselves, they just want the means to do it. Tent city is centrally located, allowing them to get to the aid programs available and to get downtown to handle their business. This whole situation is a big mess.</content>

 The student's names are Ali Shams and Kaelan Housewright. They have a Facebook group here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=42833687407 I doubt that their organization is a right-wing Trojan Horse, since Mr. Shams proposed the initiative as a way to make good on a promise to a gay friend to overturn Prop. 8, but you can visit the Facebook group and make up your own mind.</content>

Since we are supposedly doing journalism here, it'd be nice if the writer told us who these two college students are, and if this is simply a right-wing tactic to say "hey we don't really hate gay people at all..."</content>

    <content type="text">Hmmm... I gather that you are calling for the detachment of religious ideology or tradition "custom of the past" from what exactly? &#xD;
&#xD;
Article 1 Section 4 of the California State Constitution states, "Free exercise and enjoyment of religion without&#xD;
discrimination or preference are guaranteed.  This liberty of&#xD;
conscience does not excuse acts that are licentious or inconsistent&#xD;
with the peace or safety of the State.  The Legislature shall make no&#xD;
law respecting an establishment of religion..."&#xD;
&#xD;
So, now I guess we need a definition of religion, right? Yes we do.&#xD;
&#xD;
"1 a: the state of a religious &lt;a nun in her 20th year of religion&gt; b (1): the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2): commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance&#xD;
2: a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices&#xD;
3archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness&#xD;
4: a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith"&#xD;
(religion. (2009). In Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. Retrieved March 11, 2009, from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/religion)&#xD;
&#xD;
Now, let's take a look at the California State Constitution's Preamble:&#xD;
"We, the People of the State of California, grateful to Almighty God for our&#xD;
freedom, in order to secure and perpetuate its blessings, do establish this&#xD;
Constitution."&#xD;
&#xD;
Well, should we start letting everyone write their own version of the California Constitution? Or better yet should we have a Wiki-Constitution?</content>

If that is what you mean, is it true that we the people elect our officials to represent us and govern us? If the answer to that is yes, then are you saying that the people we put in charge need to step aside?&#xD;

If the answer to that question is yes, then once they step aside, leaving civil society to define marriage, how will this issue be resolved?</content>

    <content type="text">From what I understand, it's DOMA that bars gay couples from those benefits and programs. Overturning prop 8 won't change anything on the federal level. If the Democrats repeal DOMA, then gays would be eligible as domestic partners for those benefits.

However, I'm opining from memory here. Am I missing something, Dale?

    <content type="text">I'd be fine with that. Domestic partnerships should be the governments definition of marriage, which shouldn't be attached to one particular religious ideology or custom of the past. It should then be up to the couple to define the ceremony they have and up to a church or whatever other institution if they wish to host such a ceremony.</content>

    <content type="text">No I don't have a source for that top figure, but I'd like to see counterexamples if you have them. I'm generalizing from the fact that the vast majority of the online content-creating sites in existence now have failed to recoup investments. This includes Huffington Post, Pajamas Media, Digg (more of an aggregator site, but we'll throw it in for good measure), the aforementioned Twitter, Facebook and Myspace. The Washington Post had a notable failure in its Loudoun Extra despite having legendary developers behind it.

For sites that actually pay their writers, some money has been made (not sure if Salon and Slate have made more money than has been invested in them, but they're chugging along) though they are pretty rare and have suffered the same kind of deep cuts (i.e. Gakwer...Gothamist maybe?) than traditional media have had recently. Locally, I can think of one notable failure, Prosper Magazine, which had a pretty forward thinking group of technologists but did not make it past a year.

I'm not sure if any of your examples you mentioned count as profit-making...Newwest is able to pay people but I haven't read anything that says that it has made return on investment (nor should we hold it to that standard...yet). Bakersfieldvoice is a subsidiary of the Bakersfield Californian. Ohmynews is doing well in S. Korea but shuttered its entire Japan branch last year.

CPM figures are from Gawker's and Chicago Reader, other sites too that I don't remember off the top of my head. But the number varies widely (LinkedIn claims to be making $75 cpm). Local sites may get better rates than a national brand, but I suspect the volume is lower.

It's true that traditional media in general (including music/movie sales, Oscar watchers, etc) have been on a decline in the traditional ways of measuring them; the upshot was that there was there were just as many readers/viewers, if not more due to online distribution. The NYTimes has had roughly the same number of subscribers (if we lump local and worldwide together) as it did a decade ago...which is a bad thing considering population growth. But they obviously have a far, far greater reach from their website, and far more ways of telling their stories than they did in 1999. And yet, they're still struggling. The issue, particularly with them, has not been about how to innovate, but how to turn that into money. Traditional media may have been on a steady decline in circ. numbers but the hope was that in a decade, online revenues could substantially make up for lack of traditional revenue. Obviously, when the traditional model suddenly drops out while you're transitioning, that's a problem. But the failure wasn't necessarily in the lack of innovation.

I'm not bagging on Sacramento Press; it's just started and has plenty of room to grow and innovate. But I don't think we should automatically assume that the Bee is struggling just because it's old and didn't make changes fast enough, just as we shouldn't assume that new ventures have a better-than-even-chance of succeeding because they aren't stuck in the old ways, whatever that means.</content>

    <content type="text">Another angle.  Pricing in the Bee is based on column inch.  I sell stuff that is cheap - $40 is our average ticket.  But I pay the SAME price for paper space as a CAR COMPANY.    If the car company sells ONE car they more than pay for the ad.  I have to sell hundreds of $40 items to pay for one ad.   How is that fair ?  so we never take the risk - it simply is not worth it.&#xD;
&#xD;
 If the bee woudl offer a PAGE - Items under $20 - another - Items under $40,  Items under $100 -  for lower rates - they could fill them.  Plus - it'd be a cool page to read - you would go there looking for low cost gifts and cool new stuff from craftspeople, inventors, and small businesses.    &#xD;
&#xD;
If the car company complains - simple answer - You sell a car for under $100 and you can be on that page too ! &#xD;
&#xD;
It would bring in many more advertisers and would be a highly read section of the paper.</content>

    <content type="text">How about another angle. Let vendors (like my company) buy low cost PRINT &amp; DISPLAY ads in the Bee. Say for a fishing Pole I sell. The ad would then have a link - www.sacbee.com/gofast23 - so if a reader used that URL (or clicked it on a web version of the ad at sacbee.com) - it would click through to my real web page - www.gofastandlight.com I would then pay a PER click fee to the Bee. The BEE could monitor that link and bill me. So if I get lots of action - the bee gets lots of money. It is basically what google does. The Bee should use its PRINT presence to "out google google" Keep in mind that if someone clips that ad out of the paper and puts it on their fridge - then clicks it in 6 months - I am still happy to pay the BEE for that click. The ad in the paper can work LONGER than similar electronic ads. The bee builds a residual payment stream.</content>

    <content type="text">"99% of the most popular media sites make only enough profit to cover hosting fees and salaries for the main writers." Any source for this quote?

"I don't know what the rate per ad impression is these days but the pre-recession rate seems to have averaged around $10 per 1000." Any source for this? Speaking as an owner of this company we pay more than that a CPM. All the media outlets in town that we work with charge more than that per CPM. Perhaps Sacramento media is an aberration.

Despite a recession and drops in ad budgets, our company is still seeing huge ad revenue growth.

While the newspaper industry is seeing a hit from the recession its failures are institutional and started well before the current recession (http://www.forbes.com/2007/08/31/newspapers-advertising-media-biz-media-cx_lh_0831newspapers.html).

For an interesting look at what the newspaper industry has been up to over the last 30 years when it comes to innovation check out, "Digitizing the News."

Lastly there are quite a few small media ventures similar to our own that are profitable. Here are two examples: http://www.newwest.net/ and http://www.bakersfieldvoice.com/. And if you want to see a wildly successful new media effort (based on citizen journalism) check out the English version of the Korean website Oh My News (http://english.ohmynews.com/).</content>

    <content type="text">While the Bee could do more to up its new media cred (if money grew on trees), the belief that selling Twitter ads could somehow make a dent in their tens in millions in expenses, or even break even as a venture, is something out of the 90s dot boom era. Twitter itself is not making money, nor is it expected to even in the next few years. Facebook, with 110m+ users, is also not reporting a profit, and the prospects for its advertising is far, far more lucrative and solid than Twitter's. MySpace can only report a profit because of an ongoing $800m deal with Google and that deal was considered to be a wash for Google.

So what makes you think that the Bee, or any one else, can make money off of what would require a significant amount of hacking (since Twitter, AFAIK, doesn't have a built in ad delivery platform, particularly for the end client) and strategery (training an ad rep to make the pitch, merging this system with the existing McClatchy ad delivery platform)?

I don't know what the rate per ad impression is these days but the pre-recession rate seems to have averaged around $10 per 1000. I imagine the rate is less for Twitter which is generally not original content, but a feed of links. But let's propose a generous 100,000 viewers per day (which would make that single Twitter page more popular than all but the largest media sites on the Net)...that amounts to $100 a day, times 365...that's $36,500, about enough to pay an entry level reporter without benefits.

The Internet doesn't magically create money for you, putting your content on the Internet doesn't make money appear automatically. The idea that the if only media companies could've jumped on the Internet earlier (and by most accounts, McClatchy did, which is why the own most of the city.com names, like sacramento.com or miami.com. Sacbee.com, as far as I know, is still the largest site in town), they'd be rolling in the dough, is an opinion totally naive of actual Internet economics. 99% of the most popular media sites make only enough profit to cover hosting fees and salaries for the main writers. Mega-sites like Huffingtonpost, which require developers beyond maintaining a Wordpress account, aren't making money. Even Gawker, the granddaddy of all profitable media sites, has made vast cuts and continues to do so.

The New York Times is also struggling, and no one can accuse it of being backwards. Its programming operations are sophisticated enough to be committing code to major open source projects, and it is light years ahead of any media site as far as trying out new forms of storytelling.

It's such an obvious and dull explanation, but traditional media is failing primarily because of the failing economy (and the drop in ad budgets). They are also losing ad dollars to the Internet, but the advertisers are paying a lot less money for ads than they were in print or TV or radio. Any one who is going to start a new media site on the premise of "old media is failing because they're old and don't know the Internet" is going to fail just as badly as the many, many unprofitable new media ventures have.</content>

    <content type="text">Those look like cormorants to me. Unlike ducks, cormorants' feathers aren't oiled to keep out water, so you'll often see them on an outcropping with their wings spread to dry off (or looking to start a fight, perhaps?)</content>
