As part of a “Bowl-a-Thon” event, art students at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom today finished off the last of 200 bowls they donated to River City Food Bank for its upcoming Empty Bowls event. The fundraiser, slated for Monday, March 8, and Tuesday, March 9 at the Masonic Temple, 1123 J Street in Sacramento, aims to raise at least $80,000 to feed growing numbers of hungry adults and children in the greater Sacramento area. “We are deeply grateful for the energy and dedication of Marianne Dana’s art students, especially during this time of difficult budget cuts for public schools,” said Eileen Thomas, Executive Director of River City Food Bank (RCFB). “Many more people are turning
Based on last night's rehearsal, tonight's Tribute to Freedom concert will transport listeners back to a time when Eastern Europe first tasted freedom from the oppression of the Berlin Wall. Tickets ranging from $15 and up are still available on ticketweb.com. Conductor Pete Nowlen and Choir Master Ryan Murray have been rehearsing for several weeks with the orchestra, chorus and solists of the Academy at All Hallows in combination with the Chamber Choir of Jesuit High School and the choruses of St. Francis, John Paul II and Adventist Academy. For more details, see the program posted on the Cathedral's website, www.cathedralsacramento.org. Photos feature members of the brass section of the
I tweeted last weekend from the parkway, because I was SO grateful for the financial sponsorship of a stretch: Rex Cycle (and Nolte Associates). Thanks, again, Rex's... from a non-cyclist who absolutely loves this gem that we too often take for granted! (@philanthrophile)
Kathleen, as a story idea, I'm having a hard time finding localized estimates of budget cuts on some of our region's most vulnerable populations, including low-income children, seniors and immigrants. The California Budget Project has statewide information about the # of people who may lose benefits like CalWorks or Healthy Families. I found the #of children receiving CalWorks benefits in Sacramento, but it's really hard to get a grip on the total scope of state, county and city potential cuts in Sacramento County. Included in that should be cuts to food stamps (CFAP). I care because I'm a volunteer for River City Community Services, a food closet that serves people in need who live anywhere in Sacramento county. The information is coming out in dribs and drabs but it's hard to understand the cumulative effect of all of these potential cuts on vulnerable people here. I'd LOVE it if you and Sacramento Press can provide this valuable service.
I love this idea but just did typed "SP workshops" in the green search bar and it doesn't seem to be working
Hey, Ben et al... Looks like you updated your terms of use agreement 8 weeks ago, but your "help" page article makes it look like it hasn't changed since October 2008. You might want to update the page and the blurb on the Help page. I am FINALLY getting around to writing that blog post on sacramento press at www.philanthrophile.wordpress.com. Feel free to weigh in or send me something that I will make its on post. And sheepishly, I must admit I accidentally deleted the informative email you sent me in late April. Sigh. My bad - and thanks again for your initial response.

I just spent some "quality time" on the site. I'm really pleased with the overall quality. Seems like you might consider adding "Education" or "Schools" as a content tab. Many people really care about things related to schools - comparative quality, achievements, interesting students - and the shrunken state of the Bee has created a gap. Maybe an opportunity for differentiation of sacramentopress.com?
