When Sacramento's own Sean Lehe (Isabella, Five Eyed Hand, The Coalition) joined San Francisco's Poor Man's Whiskey it elevated the already extremely popular band to a whole new level. Poor Man's Whiskey recently performed their Dark Side of the Moonshine to a sold out crowd at the Fillmore, yet This Saturday February 4th you can see then in the intimate and funky setting of the Auburn Event Center - and for only $15.00!

I encourage all to search out this band, especially on You Tube! Here is what the critics say: "Emerging from the San Francisco bay area music scene this quintet has developed a sound that is eclectic and engaging. PMW has been winning over national audiences with their upbeat performances, zany stage antics, and infectious songs. While seamlessly integrating acoustic and electric instruments the band weaves tales of everyday life, inviting the audience to become a part of each show." "Poor Man's Whiskey plays High Octane Hootenanny music…Dance, laugh, sing." Check them out - I know you will soon become a fan!

In addition to Poor Man's Whiskey, Achilles Wheel will be opening & celebrating the release of their first CD "VIII Hours”. Achilles Wheel is an all-star band, made up of some of the regions finest, including Jonny "Mojo" Flores (Sacramento Blues Review, Dead Ahead, Rusty Buckets), Paul Kamm (Buck Love & the Humperheads, Paul Kamm & Eleanore MacDonald++). Come early as they will start as soon as the room fills.

As Dave says it, “There are 2 kinds of Folk Music, quite Folk Music & Loud Folk Music, I play both”, but as one who has seen Dave in many configurations, this line does not begin to explain a Dave Alvin show. On October 14th, Dave (along with the Guilty Ones) will be making their way up from Sacramento Town to the gold rich foothill town of Auburn, as Dave continues to claim his name as “The King of California”,( at least when it comes to songwriting, rippin’ Fender Stratocaster riffs, and incredible vocal phrasings). The Auburn Event Center (& Roadhouse) will play host for this very special and rare evening of fun! - (BTW if you have not been to Keep Smilin' show at the Event Center you are missing out!)

Dave Alvin first gained international recognition as the driving force behind the classic ‘70’s / 80’s Band The Blasters, which became the standard for “New” American Rockabilly, blending , Blues, Rock N’ Roll with a little Punk attitude and fun, the likes of which no one before or since has been able too trump. Since then Dave has developed a Grammy Winning solo career, while at times dabbling with side projects, including the LA Bands X & the Knitters, both of which feature Xenon and John Doe along with the short lived band The Pleasure Barons featuring the late Country Dick Montana and Mojo Nixon. Along the way , Dave took home a Grammy for best Folk Album with his incredible project “Public Domain".

His "solo" musical path has taken a fun run with some incredible guilty folks, 1st it was Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones, then the Guilty Women came along which has helped lead to his newest configuration “the Guilty Ones” featuring couple guilty guys and one hell of a great guilty woman! The Guilty Ones just released Dave’s newest album Eleven Eleven, a CD that features “Harlon County Line”, a song featured on the FX hit “Justified”

Opening the fun will be Campbell & Woods, a rare joining of some very old friends and incredible performers Bob Woods and Gary Campbell. Gary’s vocals are second to none & Bob’s guitar work on the B-Bender Fender Telecaster are of legendary status, as those who have witnessed can attest too. They will be performing some familiar songs culled from the dusty horse trails of the South West, as well as from Hobo camps found along the tracks of the old Southern Pacific railways. Do not come late for this show, Bob and Gary are not to be missed, trust me on this one!

The Doors open at 7, the show will start around 8. All ages are allowed, but keep in mind this is an “adult” oriented show, and ID is required for the bar. Seating is limited and no guarantees are given! Mean people and whiners need not show, but if you are up for one hell of a great evening of music – this is gonna be it! Tix are available at Cherry Records & Tribal Weaver in Auburn, Briar Patch Records in Grass Valley, All Dimple Record Locations or online at http://davealvin.eventbrite.com (there were just a few tix left for online purchas at the writing of this) - There will be a limited amount of tickets available at the door.

The Event Center is a short trip froma any valley location, just off of the Elm Exit of 80 in the Liquor Outlet and for more information visit my website at http://www.keepsmilinpromotions.com.

Note that the Auburn Event Center and Keep Smilin' will be bringing several fun shows to close out 2011 - On Sunday Ocotober 30th an early show with Wayne "The Train" Hancock (with Leroy Virgil & the Excavators, the Cash Prophets, Cockfight Kings & Afterlife) * 11-11-11 will be celebrated in a big way with Great American Taxi - Achilles Wheel (Featuring Jonny Mojo & Paul Kamm) & Pete Grant on Pedal Steel for both bands!) - then on Friday 12-2-11 The New Riders of the Purple Sage return along with The Coalition featuring (Poor Mans Whiskey's Sean Lehe, Mind-X's Sean Barfly & Rick Zamora, Brian Rogers and more) - Come on out and join in some fun!

Whether in the heart of a city, or in an outlying suburb it is getting worse, and nobody is immune. I so encourage anybody that witnesses any questionable activity to please notify the proper authorities. Only by banning together & sending a strong message we will not accept this sort of behaviour will it begin to end. Somehow appreciation & respect continues to erode from our society. Community Leaders, Teachers, Parents and kids all need to work to educate and instill a sense of worth and value that will make kids think twice before committing a sensless act such as torching a playground, or inflicting injury.

You may have heard about Billy Joe Shaver in recent news as this 70 year old songwriting legend was acquitted on aggravated assault charges resulting from a bar room brew ha ha that ended with Billy shooting a man in the face! Outlaw legend is an understatement when it comes to Billy Joe Shaver, who is widely credited with starting the whole “outlaw country” thing in the first place. Rumor has it, at least according to itunes, Outlaw Country was born when Waylon Jennings showed up at a studio with a fist full of Billy Joe Shaver songs & recorded the classic “Honky Tonk Heroes” Album.
Billy most likely would be as well known as Waylon, Willie, Johnny or Merle had the wind blew a little differently. Alas he has remained in the background as his peers and friends have had a lot more glory. But don’t fool yourself, a Billy Joe Shaver show is truly special, and this Friday you will have a chance to find out why & to top it off the show is Free!
You know the songs, You Asked Me Too was made famous by Elvis, Old Five & Dimers was recorded by Bob Dylan & many others, Johnny Cash has done numerous Billy Joe Shaver songs from Old Chunk of Coal to singing duets on Billy’s most recent CD Everybody’s Brother. But Billy is not the only star of Party in the Park.
One of Sacramento’s best kept secrets Bob Wood’s will be bringing his trio to the party, along with some special guests, including the incredible Pete Grant. Bob has shared the stage with Commander Cody & Bill Kirchen as well as Albert Lee, Pete Grant has played and recorded with everyone from Willie Nelson to the Grateful Dead. The Bob Woods trio will put on an incredible show & will get old and young on their feet & out on the dance floor!
But music is not the only reason to come Party in the Park – The Sierra Foothills biggest and best BBQ Pit & Beer Garden is a must do too! Tri-Tip, Chicken, Burgers & more (vegans are covered too!) and of course and in spite of my protests wine will be available too – but they had to have some Margarita’s to get me to relent!
Kids are included too, for a small fee they can have unlimited fun on the giant interactive inflatable devices, and also available are pony rides, face painting and other fun! Grandma and Grandpa may enjoy some of the many craft booths!
The weather will be perfect, the music is great and the company can’t be beat. You do not want to say on Saturday, woulda – coulda – shoulda! No you need to commit and come enjoy the fun!
Party in the Park starts, but rest assured Billy Joe Shaver will not hit the stage before 7:45. It is at Auburn Rec Districts Regional Park, 3770 Richardson Dr., Auburn CA 95602 – visit www.partyinthepark.net or call 530-885-8461 for more info. I hope to see you there, and in the mean time…. Keep Smilin’! Scott - ps Support Local Music!!

Brighten up your day & have some fun at Happy Hour today (Tuesday 4-20). Kate Gaffney who has been creating smiles for the Torch Club Happy Hour for some time now will have a very special guest sitting in today. Bob Woods is probably the regions best kept secrets when it comes to incredible guitarmanship (may not be a real word, but it sure fits the bill). Bob has been playin' the juke joints of the Sacramento Valley and beyond for decades now. While possible stardom lurked in the future some time ago (Bob became a brief member of the Surfaris, one of his early bands was a regular opener for Commander Cody & other great bands of the time), Bob listened to common sense or perhaps it was his mother - I can never get a clear answer. But in any event, Bob got a day job, got married..... Well now as time if freeing up, and the fingers are loosening up in recent years we have been blessed by more frequent opportunities to enjoy his talents.

On the flip side, Kate Gaffney took a slightly different path, as this young talent left her day job to focus on her passion & to share her talents. While Kate comes from the suburbs of Philadelphia, her influences seem more from the heart of Texas or Tennessee with a big taste of San Francisco Jam. Kate has been wowing critics for some time now & for good reason. Kate now resides in San Francisco, and shares the stage regularly with both native talent as well as touring greats. But as a former Sacramento resident, she makes a bi-weekly journey back to the Torch Club to bring some happy hour fun and smiles to her dedicated friends and fans, for which I for sure am one!

Well as you can guess, today I am smiling from ear to ear as I look forward to seeing 2 of my favorite folks are joining together for the first time to create some fun music. While never playing together, both Bob & Kate share many musical directions, not to mention sharing many fans. I can not say enough to encourage folks to come out, and beside Kate & Bob who knows who will show up to join in the fun as many of the areas favorite players, along with some her band mates often come and sit in.

As I sit here, the clouds look to be rolling eastward - the sun is peeking through & I am getting ready to have a fun back half to a rainy start of an April Tuesday in Sacramento! - I hope to see you there (5:30ish) , and in the mean time..... Keep Smilin' :)

Once a year the Auburn Community throws a big 'ole Party, and wants all our neighbors to know you're invited. This Friday, June 19, The Auburn Park and Recreation District takes the lead on the regions biggest and best Free Concert and Family Fun Event. Party in the Park has grown to be the "Premier Music Event" in the Foothills, and it is because of entertainment such as this years headliners The Waybacks.

The Waybacks have been thrilling festival crowds for some time now with their unique blend of styles, which really defies definition but appeals to a wide variety of tastes, I would suggest going on YouTube and searching their name, it is quite a journey. From great songs when they were the "backing band" for the Grateful Deads Bob Weir, to a sultry rendition of a swamp New Orleans influenced ballad. In words I would have to say they are a rockin', folksy, rootsy, semi-acoustic toe-tappin' good time vocal jam band.

Opening up for The Waybacks, is Sacramento's own Kate Gaffney, who will be bringing her all-star band, which includes some favorite faces including guitar wiz Steve Randall. If you have not had a chance to catch Kate, I hope you take advantage of this great opportunity.

While music is the focus, it is far from the only reason to come up and enjoy Party in the Park. While there you will find a huge BBQ Pit, offering everything from the perfect Tri-Tip Sandwich to home cooked sweet potatoe delights (don't knock it until you tried it!) , of course there is pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs & more and to top it off is Cheri's Home Made Ice Cream! As this is a Summer kick-off event, we plan for the heat, in addition to the ice cream, Ice Cold Beer & Margaritas will be on hand, as well as Jamba Juice and a variety of other cool treats. Most all the food is served up by local service clubs and other worthy non-profit organizations. While you are welcome to bring your own food & drink (non alchoholic) we hope you will choose to bring your wallet and leave the food and drinks to us.

Got Kids? Well Party in the Park was started by a selfish dad (that would be me) who found it hard to find a way to listen to great music and still fulfill my parental duties. The Kids Zone is great, from the areas biggest climbing walls, to the ever popular pony rides and a ton of cool inflatables (bring the swimming suits kids, there will be 2 giant water slides this year) - all close by and within eyeshot of the music venue.

If that is not enough, we throw in a bunch of cool craft vendors and demonstration booths! We try to find a little something for everyone, cause I got a mom and dad I need to please, not to mention my now not so young boys! I encourage you to come up early, but don't worry if you get out late, The Waybacks won't start until 7:30!

Please visit www.partyinthepark.net for more on this fun time, or feel free to call the Auburn Rec District at 530-885-8461. Just come on up 80, take the Bell Rd. Exit (#123) , Turn Left go 2 miles to 49 (at Target) Turn Right, go a mile or so to the 3rd light & Turn left on Dry Creek (76 / Arco) - 2 blocks and you are there! If you like you can also go to one of my favorite sites, www.emusicconnect.com and click on our link!

"Nobel Laureate William Shockley & Emma B Shockley Memorial Park". You may have read about it in the Sacramento Bee, or perhaps the Auburn Journal or somewhere else. What the park name does not mention is in addition to winning a Noble Prize for his work on developing the Transistor (Time Magazine listed Mr. Shockley in the 100 Most influention people of the Century too), Mr. Shockley was a big supporter of Eugenics. Now here is the story:

In a trust, the Shockleys provided for 28 acres of land they own to be given to the Auburn Park and Recreation District, the gift came with 2 conditions: 1) The land be used for "passive" use only, and 2) It be given the name mentioned above. The District Board voted 3-2 to accept this gift. Subsequent to the accepting of the land, the Auburn Journal discovered and reported the facts relating to Mr. Shockleys involvement and support of Eugenics, a subject that was never discussed during the decision to accept or deny the property. As some may know, I serve on the Auburn Rec District board, and embarassingly I had no idea of Mr. Shockley's racist past. I did object to the acceptance of the property, but it had nothing to do with the name.

Now that the news has come out, it has created quite a stir. I am writing today, to shed light on this issue and hopefully solicit some opinions from those not so closely attached to the subject. Here is a little more information, and choices as I see it, please note that at this time there is no mechanism to now "return" the gift.

1) Accept the terms of the gift and live with the conditions as listed.

2) Accept the terms, but come up with some additional verbage to the name, some have suggested the Nobel Laureate...... a park for enjoyment by all, dedicated in a year when America celebrated it's first African American President...

3) One suggested writing the name on a bottom of a rock, they placing the rock name side down.

4) I have received a legal opinion saying that gifts of "Real Property" can not have restrictions placed on the gift (this makes sense, what if they said we had to put up a statue of something or someone some would find offensive, or perhaps the restrictions stated it could only be used by certain people), we can proceed down this path and see if the restrictions are valid, and if not have them removed & proceed naming the park as we normally would (public notice, solition of suggestions & public debate & vote) - Of course this brings up ethical or moral questions about "gift giving".

5) Ignore the request, as there is no real threat of action, there is no "trust police" & no regulatory agency will likely object - again there are moral issues tied to this decision.

Everyone I know agrees Mr. Shockleys racist views are ignorant, ugly and should not be condoned. But at the same time many also note that people such as Darwin, Andrew Jackson or even Abraham Lincoln also had racist views or participated in actions or practices such as slave ownership which obviously are unacceptable, yet all have been memorialized to one extent or another. Is there a difference between Shockley and Goethe (whose name still appears on google maps)? Did Shockleys "good" outweigh his "bad"? Do we spend too much time and energy focusing on a name? I am sure one can come up with many questions.

This issue is not going away soon, it definetly sparks conversation and debate, I look forward to hearing some of Sacramento Press writers and readers comments - As always, Keep Smilin'!

Today I received in the mail an advertisement from Toyota trying to entice me into the dealership for service. On the cover was an advertisement "Check Engine Light Inspection". My initial reaction was what the #@% is this (heck o.k!). A little further reading told me that you are paying $19.95 for someone to read a code, and tell you what the code says. Well folks, I can almost guarantee you are wasting your money, as the next comment from the service adviser will be something to the affect of: we found a code P0301, which shows a misfire on your vehicle, it will require additional diagnosis to determine the cause of this code, we will need your approval for 2 hours of diagnosis time to figure this out, of course we will credit back the $19.95 charge for the code read.

Folks, do not fall for gimmicks, being an owner of a repair shop in Citrus Heights, I regularly see customers complaining about scams regarding "Free Diagnosis" or "Free Check Engine Diagnosis", only to leave in anger. I love the one from AAMCO in regards to their "Free" Diagnosis, then on the radio real fast you hear: "External Diagnosis Only”....., this one really gets me laughing. Please ask any legitimate technician what an "External Diagnosis is", it is a joke, basically telling you if we lift the hood it then will require an "internal diagnosis"! What they need to say is we will do a free code read, but you will have to pay to find out what is causing that code, which usually will run into a diagnosis of 1-2 hours. These adds are the equivalent of a doctor advertising a Free medical evaluation, then to find out it only includes checking the temperature, they advise to find out what is wrong, you have to pay a $100.00 Office Visit.

I strongly recommend people look for legitimate diagnosis specials. Any quality shop will charge you for either a 1 or 2-hour diagnosis depending on the nature of the complaint. This is quite appropriate, what you are paying for is a trained, qualified and certified technician to spend time with you’re vehicle, determining the cause of a problem, be it a "Check Engine Light", Overheating, or other concern. Diagnosis is the most important part of the repair procedure, and one you really cannot get for free. Once a diagnosis is completed, you should be provided with an estimate to properly fix the problem. Be forewarned, solutions are not always guaranteed & sometimes you will pay for a diagnosis to find out that the fuel cap is bad, or not properly secured. But again, you can be saving yourself hundreds of dollars because you might unnecessarily replace a $200.00 Oxygen Sensor because a code reader came up with an O2 Sensor code.
Code reading is not a diagnosis; it is only the 1st step in a process, no different than. Most ads for free or next to free services are come-ons to get you in the shop then hit you with much higher diagnostic charges. At our shop, we advertise for a discounted diagnosis, we charge $59.88 for up to an hour of a technician’s time, often times we can even fix a problem such as an evaporative hose leak during that time. Our shop as others, will also work to credit back the diagnosis charges, but that will usually only apply to "Major" Repairs, typically those repairs $500.00 or more.

I think the key for people to find affordable repairs, is not to look for a quick fix but rather develop a relationship with a shop and its owner / employees. Just like any other business, restaurant, hairdresser, doctor or otherwise people treat their "regulars" with respect & provide a combination of price and service that will keep you coming back. We all have costs and expenses that need to be met, not to mention a hopeful level of profit (I am still waiting for that). The old saying "nothing is for free" is very real, one way or another you will be paying, be it sub-standard work or bait and switch tactics. You do not have to go to a dealer for great service, but you do have to look out for shady advertising stunts & pushing closing techniques

A good shop will inspect a vehicle for problems, and make recommendations. I suggest you listen to these, as most times they will prevent bigger repairs in the future or perhaps ensure a road trip is a positive experience not a nightmare stuck somewhere because your serpentine belt broke at 10:00 at night. Then again, if a salesman uses scare techniques or seems overly aggressive you might want to look for a second opinion!

I hope all have safe travels and only positive experiences the next time they go to an auto repair shop. And please remember vehicle repair is not an exact science, one of the best ways to find out how good a shop is, is by how they handle their warranty and comebacks. Mistakes happen, technicians are only human, but a good shop will always stand behind their work and attempt to the best of their abilities to make a customer happy.

As always, Keep Smilin’!

This Wednesday April Fools Day, SBL Entertainment and Marilyn’s on K will be presenting a wonderful and special evening of music. The Waybacks will be playing a rare club gig, which is almost sure to provide a great time for all who choose to attend. To categorize the Waybacks is tough, their unique sound is cross-genre as well as cross- generational. While surely not for everyone, (the Metal or Hip Hop crowd may not put this on their must see list), most others would & should. Fans of Americana, Jam Band, Folk, Country (Real Country), Rock-n-Roll, Swing, New Orleans Jazz, Jazz Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, Funk and / or a few other styles will want to attend.

The Waybacks are a 4 piece band that comes together and translates multiple influences into a musical stew, that satisfies the most finicky tastes. True to their roots, no 2 shows are the same, on any given night, one might hear a blend of originals pulled from one of their many albums, or perhaps songs in the working, side by side with of The Grateful Dead, or later Led Zeppelin, and when you least expect it a sweet ballad that harkens back to a 1940’s Swing, all done with stand-up bass, fiddle (or mandolin), acoustic (or electric) guitar & drums, in a way that is unique to the Waybacks, again this must be seen and heard to truly understand.

I encourage folks to Google the Waybacks, or perhaps visit their web site www.waybacks.com to learn more. Better yet, surf on over to www.archive.org and check out the live music archives (The Woodside show is great), or how about youtube!. But I really recommend digging into the wallet & supporting local music at Marilyn’s www.marilynsonk.com come and enjoy some good company, good drink & some great music.!! See you there, in the mean time….

On a non-musical note, I would like to really recommend coming up Saturday morning, and enjoyin an interpretive hike hosted by a group called "The Canyon Keepers". This is a really beautiful time in the American River Canyon and Auburn State Recreaton Area. The Canyon Keepers will be starting off at the Old Foresthill Bridge right at the confluence of the Middle and North Forks of the American River. Just take the Hwy 49 Exit off of 80 and head towards cool, instead of heading right at the bottom of the hill, go straight a few feet and park. The hike starts at 9:00, you can call the Keepers at 530-885-3776, the hike will focus on the Historic Bridges in the Canyon. It is FREE!

Be it after a hike, before a show or otherwise, please spend some time at enjoying some of the wonderful offerings of Auburn. There are numerous shops, museums, galleries, eateries and other fun ways to spend your time (and money!). Today I will focus on some of the eateries in Old Town Auburn. I will start with the Auburn Ale House, brewery and resturaunt, Brewmaster Brian, his wife and wonderful staff have a lot to offer, from the best beer around to great food and spirits. If you have a little wine snobbiness in yourself there is no better place to flaunt it than Carpe Vino, Gary and his son have provided a very special place, offering the best selection of local wines to be found anywhere, they also have a great kitchen cooking up some very special dinners, serving in a very unique and historic setting. Bootlegers which is a long establiched eatery , steeped in the traditional "pub" atmosphere is headed up by Ty Rowe and his great staff. Great food is the specialty hear, from duck to steak all items are cooked to perfection, they offer both indoor and outdoor seeting, they also have the best bottled beer selection around. Next door to Bootleggers is Tio Pepe's, a family run you guessed it Mexican Resturaunt, Shelly, Eva and the rest of the gang offer the best in hospitality, not to mention the best Margarita's in Old Town!. Marybelles harkens back to the old soda fountain days, Tom and the crew offer a home made feel and menu that is always to be enjoyed, my boys love their milk shakes!! Awful Annies got it's start in Old Town, this award winning spot offers a great patio dining, always a wait for lunch or breakfast, but well worth it, the also serve dinner now. Our families favorit breakfast spot though is Eidelweis, their omelets are great, a wonderful view and great price, they also have a full "diner" influenced menue. In the back of Gold Rush Plaza is the Creekside Grille, some say this spot built around and over a bubbling creek has the best burgers in town. Cafe Delicias is another family owned spot inbedded in Auburn Tradition, and now spreading out around the valley. Founder Rueben and family still make the Old Town spot home, where he can be seen often behind the grille, this is the favorite of many locals, check them out. While on Friday or Saturday Eves you may have to wait a little bit, Olde Towne Pizza is worth it, the best pies for miles around, great service, cold beer and reasonable prices - the perfect combo. Just up the hill next to the Historic Courthouse, is Lattitudes which changes its menu on a monthly basis, representing different "lattitudes", be it Greece, Africa, Brazil or otherwise, the food is fresh, vegetarians always represented and below the main dining room is the ABA, which is a little more relaxed and offers a Bar Menu. Old Town's newest addition is Tsudas New York Deli, while I have not partaken in this spot yet, rumor has it the Pastrami sandwich is a sure fire hit. Now I am getting hungry, should have focused on the shops & galleries.

I hope you come up, I will highlight other offerings in the future, in the mean time....

I am not sure what the Mayor of Sacramento is doing on the legislative side of things. Nor am I sure what concrete plans he has to help the struggling business climate in "his" city and the surrounding region. What I do know, is that for the first 100 days or so the Mayor has spent the majority of his time in very media freindly meetings, round tables, summits and otherwise talking. He has also taken a couple trips back to Washington DC, with another soon on the horizon. His short tenure in office, has sure been interesting to watch, but at the same time a little worrisome to this observer.

In a recent article, the Mayor commented on his celebrity relationships and the doors that have already been open. He did not expand on this by expaining what doors have been open, but I think we are begining to get the picture. Unfortunately, I think recent and upcoming choices of who the Mayor is bringing to the City to support his causes, may be starting to close many of these doors.

The other day, the Mayor brought Jesse Jackson into town to help promote the Mayors call to volunteer. Today I read in Sacramento's local rag that next Monday the Rev. Al Sharpton will be coming to support the Mayors next "summit", which apparently is on education. While I do not know many who would challenge the concept of volunteerism, or excellence in education, I am aware of many who are not "comfortable" with those the Mayor has chosen to bring into town to support his cause.

While both the Rev.'s Jackson and Sharpton are well known, and will bring media attention, I also feel the controversy they bring will quite possibly do as much harm as good. What would people think if one brought Ann Coulter or Sean Hannity into town to support their efforts? By nature, individuals such as those mentioned bring division & tension. Mention any of these names in conversation and instantly emotions are envoked, and judgements made. This is not the way to develop universal support for a cause. Before the Mayor brings Sean Penn to town to promote "Clean and Green", I hope Mayor Johnson will consider some of the following:

While leaning to the left, Sacramento is far from a bastion of Liberalism. Rather Sacramento is a Religous, Ethnic, Political and otherwise diverse community.

Sacramento is not an island unto itself. Quite the contrary, Sacramento is a key piece in the Sacramento Regional puzzle, surrounding the City, are much more conservative areas. The region needs to work together to generate an economic climate that will help us all. Bringing political activists to town, does not necessarily instill confidence and comfort in many of your neighbors.

On the same token, CEO's and other business leaders vary in their political and other values, and need to feel comfortable about the envioronment that they choose to operate in.

While meetings, summits, symposiums, round tables, surveys have their place in "the process", there reaches a point of overkill, and after a while the old saying "talk is cheap" comes into play. Proposals, agenda items, legislation and action need to rise to the forefront, personally I feel that time is now.

Mr. Mayor I hope you slow down a little on the spotlight methodology. Start showing that you are a true leader, attempting to build honest consensus. This can only be done by action, not words. And if you would, for the next "celebrity" that you bring to town to "open doors", can it please be someone who is not a political hot button. Recently many doors have been opened, I only hope the winds of change do not get so strong some don't get blown shut.

As always just opinions, as a small businessman & part time politician, I am sure I join with all in the area in hoping for success, and that soon the tide will turn & we can all Keep Smilin'

Thanks to my 14 year old son Patrick's pleading & my passion to partake in live music, he my wife & I headed down to San Francisco last Saturday (2/28) to take in a show featuring Hank III (The grandson of the late great Hank Williams), along with openers "Those Poor Bastards". What a great evening of fun, family & live music!

The show was held at a new venue to me; the Regency Grand Ballroom, which is a wonderful spot near the Civic Center area, on Van Ness Avenue. The hall is one of those old school S.F treasures, a beautiful room, wood floors, high onamental ceilings & walls, chandeliers & a warm feeling that is hard to explain, but immediatly understood. There is a perimeter balcony upstairs, which is where my wife and I sat, my son chose to head up front to the stage. From the get go, one could tell it was going to be a unique event. Hank III actually has 3 persona's: "Updated" Old School Country (Hank III), Power Country (Hellbilly) and straight forward power metal (Assjacks). The crowd represented these genre's and a few more! Even for San Francisco, this show's audience was pretty wild. A casual observer could find, the sleeveless flannel shirted Big Ben overall group, the cowboy crew was in force, bikers a plenty, a few new age & traditional S.F "hippies", a solid core of metalheads, the pierced and spiked, with a few Betty Boop swing types thrown in for fun.

"Those Poor Bastards" opened the show. To describe this duo without pictures and audio is impossible. About all I can say is they are honest and real, great entertainers presenting music that is well, strange & unique (think maybe a demonically posessed very young Johnny Cash). The lead singer played an old cheap acoustic guitar played through numerous effects, along with a back up vocalist / drummer, who occasionally used one hand to pluck on a keyboard. I enjoyed their short set, which included a great song called Country Radio, which echoes my view of top 40 Country Radio (I think it is pretty bad overall), another highlight was a cover of the classic Johnny Cash song; "I walk the line" , though classic would not be the word to describe this take!

Soon after the "Bastards" left the stage, Hank III took to the spotlight. Hank explained that there would be 3 parts to the show, and he began with what would turn out to be far and away my favorite segment. For approximately 2 hours, Hank and his "country" band (consisting of stand-up bass, pedal steel, fiddle, drums & Hank on guitar) played from his collection of songs, along with a few covers. The musicians were top notch, the sound at this point was great & virtually the entire crowd was on their feet, singing and swaying to the fun set. Highlights to me were Hank's song: "The Grand Ole Opry, Ain't so Grand Anymore", a well penned tune about his Grandpa's continued banishment from the Grand Ole Opry, also a high note was Hank's version of Johnny Cash's "Cocaine Blues". Hank obviously appreciates the "classics" of country, with numerous references to Merle, Johnny, Waylon and others, any fans of these folks, would certainly appreciate Hank III, who provides great hope for the future of "real" country music.

After a pause in the show, Hank strapped on an electric guitar, and the show transformed into the "Hellbilly's", which I would describe as high octaine psycho country. At this point, as the volume started to creep up, I started to fade (and thanks to Rock Med, install some welcome ear plugs) , my wife soon decided she would be better off heading back to the hotel. Alas my son was thoroughly enjoying this portion, as I could see from my perch up above. I could not understand any of the lyrics and this music was not my cup of tea, apparently my wife was not alone as the exodus from the show had begun. The Hellbilly's set only lasted maybe 20 minutes or so, at which time all the country bandmates left the stage, and the roadies made quick work of getting ready for the Assjacks.

A few minutes later, Hank returned, along with an electric bassist, lead vocalist and drummer. I wouldn't have thought possible, but somehow additional volume was found within' the belly of the sound system, which was definetly over kill, clarity led way to distortion. La. A veteran of such fun events as Summer Slaughter & Mayhem, even to my son the Assjacks volume, and lack of comprehensible vocals was a disappointment. As the ear plugs were loosing out to the volume, and since the weather was nice, I chose to wait out the remaining show on the streets of San Francisco (alas no Michael or Carl were to be found). I was not alone, and I dare say probably close to 2/3's of the audience had left by the middle of the Assjacks brief set.

Not long after the last song, my son emerged from the show, with an ear to ear grin, a signed ticket stub & a guitar pick! We walked back to the hotel room, I too was smiling as I listened to the excited reflections of the evening from my son. Hank III is a great entertainer, and even though I did not like ALL of his music, I do feel the 3 hour plus show was given from his heart & he gave his all, you can't ask for much more than that. Hank III is a true artist, and as mentioned, provides to me great hope for the future of country music, and I look forward to seeing him again, hopefully at a venue in the Sacramento area.

Now it is my turn to pick the next "family" show, John Prine is sure sounding good!

Live music is great - please support it! In the mean time...Keep Smilin'

This is what the Archives have to say about themselves: "The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format." I feel this statement, does not begin to do this organizton and site justice. To me, this sight is a launch pad for wonderful adventures.

Digging a little deeper , one begins to realize the true motivation of the folks who have been developing this site since 1996; "Open and free access to literature and other writings has long been considered essential to education and to the maintenance of an open society" "...without cultural artifacts, civilization has no memory and no mechanism to learn from its successes and failures..." The dedicated staff sure is doing their job on this end, and what a "mechanism" they are creating.

I have spent most of my exploration at the "Live Music Archive", which contains over 58,000 concerts (so much music, so little time...). This site allows for listening and quite often downloading songs and / or complete shows from literally thousands of bands & musicians. While an avid user of various P2P sites, the archives goes much beyond what any of these sites can offer. There is no doubt of legality, not to mention the virus' and other dangers found on most P2P sites. The Grateful Dead is the largest contributor to the Live Music Archive, with over 6,000 entries, but they are far from dominating the site. A quick glance will find offerings from quite a variety of sources, such as; "Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band", Warren Zevon, "Quagmire Swim Team" or the "Retribution Gospel Choir", and even this years Party in the Park headliners "The Waybacks" . The site is updated almost daily, and treasure hunters will find plenty to keep them happy, (I look forward to seeing the infamous David Barton make an appearance soon!)

I sure don't consider myself a researcher, historian or scholar, but the Archives provide plenty for me. I hope all reading this will take the time to explore this site, and pass the word. This is a precious resource, and needs to be enjoyed and supported. I personally send my kudos and thanks to the creators, maintainers and contributors of this great resource, it sure goes a long way to ensure we are able to Keep Smilin'!

I recently wrote a piece on the "Death of the Record Store." I was very impressed by the amount of feedback that the article received, be it in the Sacramento Press, via email or in person. Inevitably the conversation led to fond memories about fun times and good music.

I was reminded particularly of the live music experiences I've had. Along with the demise of too many record stores, I contend there is a serious lacking in the quality and quantity of live music available today, especially in the smaller to mid-size venues, and towns.

While the experience of a big Grateful Dead show in Oakland was always a fun time, the smaller, more intimate performances of a Jerry Garcia Band show at the Keystone Palo Alto were just that much more special, at least to me. While I do not know the whole history of clubs in the Sacramento area, I do know that the options available for live music are not what they were 20 some odd years ago when I first arrived, due to the loss of clubs like the Palms in Davis (thankfully this venue just moved farther away and did not fully disappear), the Cattle Club here in Sacramento, and many others.

A good friend who broadcasts numerous live shows on KVMR 89.5 recently related a story from a booking agent about how 2008 saw the shutting down of at least 20 venues that put on regular shows featuring traveling musicians which might be seen at venues such as the Great America Music Hall in S.F. or Sierra Nevada Brewery's "Big Room," or maybe Marilyn’s not to mention the numerous festivals that have called it quits. The result of all of this is fewer opportunities for musicians to pay the bills, and to make a living at their art!

This argument is leading to another of my favorite topics -- beer and margaritas! When I was in my prime clubbing days, the US had very different ideas about alcohol than we do now. While a senior in high school, I was 18 -- old enough for the clubs in New Jersey and New York City. It was also a time when drinking was not stigmatized or regulated as it is today.

Of course the argument can be made that we are better off with stricter alcohol laws and attitudes. I am not here to argue that point, nor am I here to promote drinking. I am writing this article to point out that I feel these changes have had a major impact on music, primarily live music. Back in the day, a venue could open the doors, allow for a low cover charge to see a great act -- known or unknown -- because liquor sales would offset the cost of the band and pay the rent.

But that is no longer the case. The loss of the under 21 drinking crowd, combined with other changes, has curtailed the stream of revenue from alcohol sales. This used to be a vital source of profit, and without it, clubs and musicians have run into considerable financial strain.

No longer can "guarantees" be provided to bands, as the risk is too great for the promoter or venue. Bands being offered just "the door" as payment run a big risk, which often can't be taken. The economics are basic: you have to have more coming in than going out, and the cost of traveling and playing is not cheap.

Think about it. A middle-aged band (or rather any musicians who really don't want to spend the night in the van), 4 or 5 members: 2-3 meals a day, gas, lodging, whatever is owed to the booking manager or "roadie," bills piling up back home... If you are not earning, you are spending. You're asked to pull into Sacramento on a Tuesday night, and hope that a hundred or so people will show up and pay to hear you play. Audience is the key, and while the risks are great for the band and promoter, likewise the risk is there for the attendee. One may pay $5 to go see an unknown commodity, but due to the higher price promoters now have to charge to attempt to cover costs, the $20-$30.00 fee becomes more of a luxury item for attendees, and risks become much harder to take. Thus the circle continues.

I think you get the idea; it's tough and the reality is it often just does not work. Maybe you are lucky enough to live in towns like Nashville, Austin, L.A or San Francisco, which have a large group of top-notch local musicians able to play the clubs and then head home. The pay may be low, but so is the expense.

But that is not the case in many if not most places. Luckily we are in Sacramento, which while not a prime spot for live music, it is still a lot better than, let's say, Boise, Idaho. Thanks to SF and Reno, artists do come to the area and we can catch a good show every now and then at a place like Marilyn's or the Empire.

I have read a lot about nightlife on line at sp.com, but I'm not sure what to do to change things around to create the win-win-win needed (artist-promoter-attendee). What will be the next club we read about in the obituaries? Hopefully upcoming shows with the likes of Todd Snider, Devil Makes Three, The Black Lips and others will be well attended, not to mention keeping the flow going for local favorites such as Kate Gaffney. Let's support music, whether it's those who make it, play it, promote it or enjoy it. We are the water that makes the plant grow (I know), and while you're at it, buy a beer or a margarita -- after all we do have an ailing economy to support!

Those who know me know that one way or another I love to share music. As such, for Christmas and other occasions I try to give the gift of music, these days typically in the form of a CD. Thus the other day I went in search of an album by the famous Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, (he’s the big guy who does the great version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"). Alas, my favorite local "record" store "Off the Record" here in Auburn, is no longer, having recently succumbed to the economic pressures independent retailers face these days. Not to fear, the new Best Buy must have a CD of this popular artist, but no, I glanced over to the local K-Mart, possibly they would have it, nope. What to do? My last hope on this Sunday was the Target; I tried but no luck there either, SOL in Auburn on this quest. I did succeed in my task, down the hill to Grandmother's place we went, and along the way we stopped by a Borders Book's, and after a good search found a CD, while not my 1st choice, it did serve the purpose, and after dinner we all enjoyed some the beautiful music that Israel left behind during his ever so brief life.

This adventure made me sit back and look at the role "record stores" have played in my life, and what will happen without them. Yeah I know there is more music and more variety than ever on the World Wide Web, but it’s just is not the same, and without human interaction, finding new music is a big gamble. Sometime around 5th grade, my parents bought me an electric guitar, my Grandmother knew about this, and wanted to get me something that related to this gift. So off Grandma went to the local music store. As was the norm, she went up to the clerk (I don't care what the time period is, I guarantee the appearance of an independent record store clerk, has to be fun for Grandma's), told them about me & asked for a suggestion, end result: under the tree that year was a copy of Jimi Hendrix’s' "Are You Experienced". While I was exposed to the typical commercial fare of the time, music I would equate to what you would typically find at today's Wal-Mart, Jimi Hendrix opened a whole new world to me (in retrospect I think my parents might have preferred me to have gotten a copy of the Partridge Family!).

I was fortunate enough to grow up (at least grow older) in the '70's, a time which for a musically confused person such as myself, there was no better period. And to top that off, midway through the decade, I moved from the Bay Area to the East Coast, near Philadelphia & New York City. I cannot imagine what my life would be without the local record store. While I am sure the top acts would still get some recognition & fame, i.e. Zep, Kiss, Fleetwood Mac, KC & the Sunshine Band, Lynyrd Skynryd, Bruce, etc., some of my more favorite music & artists that most influence and affect me would likely not, i.e. acts the Grateful Dead, Elvis Costello, Roxy Music, Jerry Jeff Walker, John Prine, Bob Marley, or for that matter Metallica (& these are the big names). These acts and so many more did not get mainstream air play, radio stations such as KFAT & KSAN in the Bay Area were not to be found in most areas of the country. For one to discover the music of these artists, you had to count on word of mouth, if you were lucky, the Sunday paper may have a decent selection of music critics (the Bee used too) or as was more often the case than not, the luck of perusing the racks of the local record store. Our shop was great, there was the rocker clerk, the punk clerk (who dabbled in New Wave also), and of course the obligatory Hippie clerk. All of who had a mission to discover & promote the newest and “best” music around, and all of these clerks had a play in what I listened too (resulting in a trip to the Spectrum for the Dead, or off to CBGB’s for the Ramones!). "Cut-Out" / Demo and the import singles could be found, all of which could be played upon request, not to mention the world of used records. For the cost of a top selling album of the time, a record store junkie could purchase 2 cut outs & 3 singles! Of course this opened led to wanting to see these acts who would frequent famous venues such as CBGB's, the Bottom Line, the Keystone & Stone clubs in the Bay Area, the list goes on.

Alas from San Francisco, to New York these clubs like record stores are getting fewer and farther between. Musicians that can still be heard on stations like KFAT, KVMR (89.5 FM here in the Sac area) or your local college radio station, have fewer and fewer options to pay the food and gas bills. There was a time when on any given night a great act could be caught at a local venue, and one could head to the local record shop to buy there music (rarely did artists have their own music to sell at shows), if not available they would be more than happy to special order it for you. That is not the case now, fewer and fewer venues are having fewer and fewer shows, and as mentioned fewer and fewer record stores to listen and buy their music. Music critics are usually the 1st to go at a struggling paper, and "free" advertising is almost a thing of the past. Yeah there are exceptions, and I pray they continue. Sacramento is especially blessed, with outlets like the Beat, Dimples or R5, and venues such as Empire, Marylyn’s, Old Ironsides, and The Boardwalk or even Club Retro. But I know it is tough for them to survive. In addition, Sacramento is blessed to have publications like SN&R & Alive and Kicking, and e products such as the SacramentoPress & eMusiConnect (while not as much as a couple years ago, I still like the Sunday "Explore" - alas the "Ticket" is gone too). The cost to present and promote a show is very high, it gets harder and harder for promoters & proprietors to take "risks" on little or "un" known acts. On the flip side, the costs for a musician / band to hit the road are ever increasing, and if not part of a package deal, it often costs more than you make to hit the road, for which shortly one can add "traveling" musician to the "disappearing" list. I think you all get the idea. From the change in drinking age, to the budget restraints on patrons, making a buck as a music focused venue is next to impossible.

I shudder to think of what my Grandmother might have gotten me if she was forced to go to the local Target or Wal-Mart for my gift. One can only imagine the recommendation of the clerk, who was pulled from the toiletries section to help her out! Today I would hope she would at least go to Wal-Mart, because thanks to exclusive contracts (that's another story) they are the only place to buy the new AC/DC Album (I still have the Australian Import of Dirty Deeds, gotten well before the 1st US Release, thanks to a local record store!). No I would probably be planning to get in line for the Poco, Pure Prairie League & Firefall 2009 Tour (in all honesty, I did like PPL back in the day), instead of planning out this years Auburn Rec Districts Free Party in the Park featuring The Waybacks (Don't miss them, the way things are going, this is exactly the kind of music you may not get to hear in the future visit www.partyinthepark.net for more- sorry for the shameless plug, but it is a great time & it is free and I get paid nothing, so...)

That's my rant for the day; stay tuned for my take on ticket prices, “national” promoters & parking! In the mean time, support local music, put a tip in the musicians cap, buy from independent retailers be it online (miles of music, village records, cdbaby....) or in person & as always ...

Keep Smilin'
