When Sacramento's own Sean Lehe (Isabella, Five Eyed Hand, The Coalition) joined San Francisco's Poor Man's Whiskey it elevated the already extremely popular band to a whole new level. Poor Man's Whiskey recently performed their Dark Side of the Moonshine to a sold out crowd at the Fillmore, yet This Saturday February 4th you can see then in the intimate and funky setting of the Auburn Event Center - and for only $15.00!

I encourage all to search out this band, especially on You Tube! Here is what the critics say: "Emerging from the San Francisco bay area music scene this quintet has developed a sound that is eclectic and engaging. PMW has been winning over national audiences with their upbeat performances, zany stage antics, and infectious songs. While seamlessly integrating acoustic and electric instruments the band weaves tales of everyday life, inviting the audience to become a part of each show." "Poor Man's Whiskey plays High Octane Hootenanny music…Dance, laugh, sing." Check them out - I know you will soon become a fan!

In addition to Poor Man's Whiskey, Achilles Wheel will be opening & celebrating the release of their first CD "VIII Hours”. Achilles Wheel is an all-star band, made up of some of the regions finest, including Jonny "Mojo" Flores (Sacramento Blues Review, Dead Ahead, Rusty Buckets), Paul Kamm (Buck Love & the Humperheads, Paul Kamm & Eleanore MacDonald++). Come early as they will start as soon as the room fills.

And the "room" is part of the fun. Keep Smilin' Promotions shows at The Auburn Event Center & Dance-a-torium is one of the areas best experiences in live music around. Get up close with the low stage right in your face. Dance on the regions biggest wood dance floor, and let your eyes wander at the unique decorations and lighting as only the Auburn Event Center can Provide!
This is an all ages event (ID Required for Bar) - Tickets are available all over including all Dimple Records or online at http://pmw.eventbrite.com - for more info please visit www.keepsmilinpromotions.com

As Dave says it, “There are 2 kinds of Folk Music, quite Folk Music & Loud Folk Music, I play both”, but as one who has seen Dave in many configurations, this line does not begin to explain a Dave Alvin show. On October 14th, Dave (along with the Guilty Ones) will be making their way up from Sacramento Town to the gold rich foothill town of Auburn, as Dave continues to claim his name as “The King of California”,( at least when it comes to songwriting, rippin’ Fender Stratocaster riffs, and incredible vocal phrasings). The Auburn Event Center (& Roadhouse) will play host for this very special and rare evening of fun! - (BTW if you have not been to Keep Smilin' show at the Event Center you are missing out!)

Dave Alvin first gained international recognition as the driving force behind the classic ‘70’s / 80’s Band The Blasters, which became the standard for “New” American Rockabilly, blending , Blues, Rock N’ Roll with a little Punk attitude and fun, the likes of which no one before or since has been able too trump. Since then Dave has developed a Grammy Winning solo career, while at times dabbling with side projects, including the LA Bands X & the Knitters, both of which feature Xenon and John Doe along with the short lived band The Pleasure Barons featuring the late Country Dick Montana and Mojo Nixon. Along the way , Dave took home a Grammy for best Folk Album with his incredible project “Public Domain".

His "solo" musical path has taken a fun run with some incredible guilty folks, 1st it was Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones, then the Guilty Women came along which has helped lead to his newest configuration “the Guilty Ones” featuring couple guilty guys and one hell of a great guilty woman! The Guilty Ones just released Dave’s newest album Eleven Eleven, a CD that features “Harlon County Line”, a song featured on the FX hit “Justified”

Opening the fun will be Campbell & Woods, a rare joining of some very old friends and incredible performers Bob Woods and Gary Campbell. Gary’s vocals are second to none & Bob’s guitar work on the B-Bender Fender Telecaster are of legendary status, as those who have witnessed can attest too. They will be performing some familiar songs culled from the dusty horse trails of the South West, as well as from Hobo camps found along the tracks of the old Southern Pacific railways. Do not come late for this show, Bob and Gary are not to be missed, trust me on this one!

The Doors open at 7, the show will start around 8. All ages are allowed, but keep in mind this is an “adult” oriented show, and ID is required for the bar. Seating is limited and no guarantees are given! Mean people and whiners need not show, but if you are up for one hell of a great evening of music – this is gonna be it! Tix are available at Cherry Records & Tribal Weaver in Auburn, Briar Patch Records in Grass Valley, All Dimple Record Locations or online at http://davealvin.eventbrite.com (there were just a few tix left for online purchas at the writing of this) - There will be a limited amount of tickets available at the door.

The Event Center is a short trip froma any valley location, just off of the Elm Exit of 80 in the Liquor Outlet and for more information visit my website at http://www.keepsmilinpromotions.com.

Note that the Auburn Event Center and Keep Smilin' will be bringing several fun shows to close out 2011 - On Sunday Ocotober 30th an early show with Wayne "The Train" Hancock (with Leroy Virgil & the Excavators, the Cash Prophets, Cockfight Kings & Afterlife) * 11-11-11 will be celebrated in a big way with Great American Taxi - Achilles Wheel (Featuring Jonny Mojo & Paul Kamm) & Pete Grant on Pedal Steel for both bands!) - then on Friday 12-2-11 The New Riders of the Purple Sage return along with The Coalition featuring (Poor Mans Whiskey's Sean Lehe, Mind-X's Sean Barfly & Rick Zamora, Brian Rogers and more) - Come on out and join in some fun!

Disclosure: I am the "Purveyor of Fun" for Keep Smilin' Promotions - for which all projects are not for profit, but rather to share some great music and times - Feel free to email me at keepsmilinpromotions@gmail.com of look for Keep Smilin on Facebook

Maybe it's me $165.00 for bands that don't even have original singers ( I remember seeing Foreigner as part of a package of 5 Bands for $5.00 at the Philly Spectrum) - it would be one thing if it were at a local bar, but a multi-thousand seat venue? Then I see incredible musicians and bands, with current offerings - often having been around longer than the above mentioned playing to a hundred or less people, lucky to get $10-20.00 per head - but again, I can not understand the facination that puts shows like Dancing with Stars on the top of the ratings charts! - to each his (or her) own, for me I will go with a show at the Palms, the Torch Club, Marylins, Harlows, Grass Valley Center for the Arts or perhaps my favorite The Auburn Event Center - regardless, go enjoy live music, and have fun! - be it Foreigner or Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones! - thanks for the article!

We are blessed in the Auburn community to have numerous youth activities, In fact the park where this happened includes a public swimming pool available at real low cost, we have youth team sports, activities such as ping-pong, we built a skate park, we have open gym time for free - hell we have lakes and rivers my kids go to all the time, we have driving ranges, movie theaters. These kids (I am assuming here) have tons of stuff they can do, we have a free to attend Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Future Farmers, we have an off road motorcycle area, we have performing arts programs- that excuse does not fly MrEd - we are not talking about kids smoking pot or other harmless bored kid activities - we are talking crimes that are hurting people & sending them to the hospital, and others that are costing thousands of dollars putting them into the felony area - For all I know this was a prank to put on You-Tube - it is getting worse and worse -I think we need to have serious consequenses for parents and kids - Make them think very hard when they light that match - Making excuses and blaming society allows for acceptance and excuse of bad behavious - we need to instill individual responsibility & accountability!

Whether in the heart of a city, or in an outlying suburb it is getting worse, and nobody is immune. I so encourage anybody that witnesses any questionable activity to please notify the proper authorities. Only by banning together & sending a strong message we will not accept this sort of behaviour will it begin to end. Somehow appreciation & respect continues to erode from our society. Community Leaders, Teachers, Parents and kids all need to work to educate and instill a sense of worth and value that will make kids think twice before committing a sensless act such as torching a playground, or inflicting injury.

You may have heard about Billy Joe Shaver in recent news as this 70 year old songwriting legend was acquitted on aggravated assault charges resulting from a bar room brew ha ha that ended with Billy shooting a man in the face! Outlaw legend is an understatement when it comes to Billy Joe Shaver, who is widely credited with starting the whole “outlaw country” thing in the first place. Rumor has it, at least according to itunes, Outlaw Country was born when Waylon Jennings showed up at a studio with a fist full of Billy Joe Shaver songs & recorded the classic “Honky Tonk Heroes” Album.
Billy most likely would be as well known as Waylon, Willie, Johnny or Merle had the wind blew a little differently. Alas he has remained in the background as his peers and friends have had a lot more glory. But don’t fool yourself, a Billy Joe Shaver show is truly special, and this Friday you will have a chance to find out why & to top it off the show is Free!
You know the songs, You Asked Me Too was made famous by Elvis, Old Five & Dimers was recorded by Bob Dylan & many others, Johnny Cash has done numerous Billy Joe Shaver songs from Old Chunk of Coal to singing duets on Billy’s most recent CD Everybody’s Brother. But Billy is not the only star of Party in the Park.
One of Sacramento’s best kept secrets Bob Wood’s will be bringing his trio to the party, along with some special guests, including the incredible Pete Grant. Bob has shared the stage with Commander Cody & Bill Kirchen as well as Albert Lee, Pete Grant has played and recorded with everyone from Willie Nelson to the Grateful Dead. The Bob Woods trio will put on an incredible show & will get old and young on their feet & out on the dance floor!
But music is not the only reason to come Party in the Park – The Sierra Foothills biggest and best BBQ Pit & Beer Garden is a must do too! Tri-Tip, Chicken, Burgers & more (vegans are covered too!) and of course and in spite of my protests wine will be available too – but they had to have some Margarita’s to get me to relent!
Kids are included too, for a small fee they can have unlimited fun on the giant interactive inflatable devices, and also available are pony rides, face painting and other fun! Grandma and Grandpa may enjoy some of the many craft booths!
The weather will be perfect, the music is great and the company can’t be beat. You do not want to say on Saturday, woulda – coulda – shoulda! No you need to commit and come enjoy the fun!
Party in the Park starts, but rest assured Billy Joe Shaver will not hit the stage before 7:45. It is at Auburn Rec Districts Regional Park, 3770 Richardson Dr., Auburn CA 95602 – visit www.partyinthepark.net or call 530-885-8461 for more info. I hope to see you there, and in the mean time…. Keep Smilin’! Scott - ps Support Local Music!!

I did not go due to the cost - while I like the Eagles, I would rather pay $15.00 for a local show featuring a great act- recently I saw Paul Barrare & Fred Tackett form the Band Little Feat - classic and seasoned musicians & a great show. I understand the attendance was so low at this show people up top got to move down to the floor. There is so much terrific music out there on any given night, I think most folks will find if they give it a chance they will find the quality of music is incredible & the atmosphere is great - be it a band like the Nibblers at the Torch or perhaps a Free concert such as Auburn's Party in the Park - this year featuring a true legend in Billy Joe Shaver - Support Local Music! (nice review & I am happy for those who had a good time, nothing beats live music)

Brighten up your day & have some fun at Happy Hour today (Tuesday 4-20). Kate Gaffney who has been creating smiles for the Torch Club Happy Hour for some time now will have a very special guest sitting in today. Bob Woods is probably the regions best kept secrets when it comes to incredible guitarmanship (may not be a real word, but it sure fits the bill). Bob has been playin' the juke joints of the Sacramento Valley and beyond for decades now. While possible stardom lurked in the future some time ago (Bob became a brief member of the Surfaris, one of his early bands was a regular opener for Commander Cody & other great bands of the time), Bob listened to common sense or perhaps it was his mother - I can never get a clear answer. But in any event, Bob got a day job, got married..... Well now as time if freeing up, and the fingers are loosening up in recent years we have been blessed by more frequent opportunities to enjoy his talents.

On the flip side, Kate Gaffney took a slightly different path, as this young talent left her day job to focus on her passion & to share her talents. While Kate comes from the suburbs of Philadelphia, her influences seem more from the heart of Texas or Tennessee with a big taste of San Francisco Jam. Kate has been wowing critics for some time now & for good reason. Kate now resides in San Francisco, and shares the stage regularly with both native talent as well as touring greats. But as a former Sacramento resident, she makes a bi-weekly journey back to the Torch Club to bring some happy hour fun and smiles to her dedicated friends and fans, for which I for sure am one!

Well as you can guess, today I am smiling from ear to ear as I look forward to seeing 2 of my favorite folks are joining together for the first time to create some fun music. While never playing together, both Bob & Kate share many musical directions, not to mention sharing many fans. I can not say enough to encourage folks to come out, and beside Kate & Bob who knows who will show up to join in the fun as many of the areas favorite players, along with some her band mates often come and sit in.

As I sit here, the clouds look to be rolling eastward - the sun is peeking through & I am getting ready to have a fun back half to a rainy start of an April Tuesday in Sacramento! - I hope to see you there (5:30ish) , and in the mean time..... Keep Smilin' :)
I think the only real leverage the City has is PR against Westfield, I think the Mayor realizes the tough guy approach likely is not the best way to go at this company. Developing a working relationship and give & take is the key, I do not think there are huge lines to buy struggling / declining shopping centers. Hopefully the city will provide some good incentives to Westfield, as the long term revenue I am sure will pay off great dividends!

Personally I like the mayors "an environment where all boats are rising" comment, not sure where that came from, but did make me smile (o.k chuckle)! - btw what kind of leverage does the city have to force a sale? And what terms could the city require for a potential buyer? This strong mayor thing sounds good but is there bite with that bark? What incentives are being given to Westfield to invest in this location vs others, there has to be a win-win I would think. With what I understand as to be the direction of the master plan for this area, SRO's don't seem to fit, while this may not seem compasionate, lines need to be drawn to create an environment that encourages commerce & participation of both the vendor and customer. By creating a vibrant center for entertainment, dining & shopping - taxes will increase and more money will be available to address the other issues facing a big city - be it SRO's, tent cities or otherwise -

Once a year the Auburn Community throws a big 'ole Party, and wants all our neighbors to know you're invited. This Friday, June 19, The Auburn Park and Recreation District takes the lead on the regions biggest and best Free Concert and Family Fun Event. Party in the Park has grown to be the "Premier Music Event" in the Foothills, and it is because of entertainment such as this years headliners The Waybacks.

The Waybacks have been thrilling festival crowds for some time now with their unique blend of styles, which really defies definition but appeals to a wide variety of tastes, I would suggest going on YouTube and searching their name, it is quite a journey. From great songs when they were the "backing band" for the Grateful Deads Bob Weir, to a sultry rendition of a swamp New Orleans influenced ballad. In words I would have to say they are a rockin', folksy, rootsy, semi-acoustic toe-tappin' good time vocal jam band.

Opening up for The Waybacks, is Sacramento's own Kate Gaffney, who will be bringing her all-star band, which includes some favorite faces including guitar wiz Steve Randall. If you have not had a chance to catch Kate, I hope you take advantage of this great opportunity.

While music is the focus, it is far from the only reason to come up and enjoy Party in the Park. While there you will find a huge BBQ Pit, offering everything from the perfect Tri-Tip Sandwich to home cooked sweet potatoe delights (don't knock it until you tried it!) , of course there is pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs & more and to top it off is Cheri's Home Made Ice Cream! As this is a Summer kick-off event, we plan for the heat, in addition to the ice cream, Ice Cold Beer & Margaritas will be on hand, as well as Jamba Juice and a variety of other cool treats. Most all the food is served up by local service clubs and other worthy non-profit organizations. While you are welcome to bring your own food & drink (non alchoholic) we hope you will choose to bring your wallet and leave the food and drinks to us.

Got Kids? Well Party in the Park was started by a selfish dad (that would be me) who found it hard to find a way to listen to great music and still fulfill my parental duties. The Kids Zone is great, from the areas biggest climbing walls, to the ever popular pony rides and a ton of cool inflatables (bring the swimming suits kids, there will be 2 giant water slides this year) - all close by and within eyeshot of the music venue.

If that is not enough, we throw in a bunch of cool craft vendors and demonstration booths! We try to find a little something for everyone, cause I got a mom and dad I need to please, not to mention my now not so young boys! I encourage you to come up early, but don't worry if you get out late, The Waybacks won't start until 7:30!

Please visit www.partyinthepark.net for more on this fun time, or feel free to call the Auburn Rec District at 530-885-8461. Just come on up 80, take the Bell Rd. Exit (#123) , Turn Left go 2 miles to 49 (at Target) Turn Right, go a mile or so to the 3rd light & Turn left on Dry Creek (76 / Arco) - 2 blocks and you are there! If you like you can also go to one of my favorite sites, www.emusicconnect.com and click on our link! Or if you like go to www.waybacks.com

I hope to see you there, it truly is a special time, and the music can't be beat! In the mean time...

Keep Smilin'

PARKS MAKE LIFE BETTER!! Parks do so much for a community, from emproved health and happiness to reduction in crime. It is always so interesting how Police, Fire, Teachers, Parks are thrown out as the areas to make the cuts, while we are paying thousands & thousand for an air quality panel to determine the benefits and to develop legislation regarding proper tire air pressure (no joke - there have been studies, hearings etc.. going on for some time & soon there will be laws, and be careful because one day you may get pulled over and the officer will whip out a tire pressure guage!) Mr. Mayor any person could take a line item look at the budget and eliminate numerous programs / departments / "mandates" that in a time of "fiscal crisis" could be suspended without a significant impact on community. Reduce bs - How much does it cost for someone to get a permit to have a neighborhood party? Cuts need to be made - layoffs need to happen, but they do not need to be made on the front line - these ploys are angering the taxpayers and need to end. Provide an "readers digest:" version of the complete budget & I think "the people" could rapidly tell you their options for cuts -

Cars on K is not a good idea - look for upgrades to parking options near by & enhancing the walking environment - put up lampoles with planters, allow for artistic and creative signage, install "performance areas" for street performers & create a volunteer committee to facilitate scheduling, add some street kiosks (go visit Pacific Street in Santa Cruz) and get rid of the street beggers, bottom when people want to come enjoy a shopping and entertaiment experience, they do not want to be bothered by beggers, a feeling of lack of safety and "harassment" will turn an opportunity for repeat business into a one time negative experience. As always Keep Smilin'! & Support Local Music!! - also I am not sure how good an idea light rail is on K street - nor am I knowledgeable of cost / benefits of re-routing

I think if one looked at a red and blue map of California they would see mostly red. While in our legislature and in some major population centers "liberals" may pervail, I think California is far from a Liberal State, though I agree perceptions within and without differ from my opinion. This issue I think is one that is a more private personal issue, that individuals of all political, religous, ethnic and other biases struggle with. I think the majority of Californians reside somewhere near the middle of the political line, with a couple issues tilting them one way or another. As the numbers show, this issue does not have a clear direction, I do not think Courts are the answer, it will take consensus of "the people" to settle this.

Here is a clip from racismreview.com: http://www.racismreview.com/blog/2009/02/16/abraham-lincoln%E2%80%99s-racism-in-context-reflections-on-his-era-and-ours/

".......Yet, virtually none of the current discussions of Lincoln –in this hagiographic mood the country is in–seriously focuses on Lincoln’s extensive racist framing of U.S. society and what that has meant, then as now. Most historians dealing with Lincoln now touch on his racism, but only a few like Lerone Bennett, Jr., in his much debated but pathbreaking Forced into Glory, get to the heart of the matter. Even left historians seem to lack the conceptual tools to make sense out of Lincoln’s deep racism. Their discussion usually focuses a few of Lincoln’s views and actions, with an argument he got less racist over time–and not centrally on the much bigger picture of racial oppression being the foundation of the nation, then as now, and on the white racial frame that was essential to rationalizing that foundation, then as now. And not centrally on how the war and Lincoln, and the war’s aftermath, were shaped by and shaped that systemic racism and its rationalizing frame. And what it meant that Lincoln stayed very racist in his views to the end.

Lincoln was a willing servant of that foundational racism. Several years before he became president, in his famous debate with Senator Stephen A. Douglas, Lincoln demonstrated that he operated out of a strong version of the white racist frame. For example, he argued in that debate that the physical difference between the “races” was insuperable:......

As far as Darwin, most people do not realize the full title of his writings - he believed in "Favoured Races" - from what I understand a foundation for Eugenics

Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, published 24 November 1859, is a seminal work of scientific literature considered to be the foundation of evolutionary biology. Its full title was On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. - (from Wikipedia)

Here is a cut from the University of Hawaii website by a Mr. Lienhard -

"Did an older and wiser Darwin leave this youthful racism? He did not. In fact, he was sexist as well as racist. He said we'd be in trouble without the law of equal transmission of characteristics to both sexes. Without it man would've grown so superior to woman as to be a different species.

Darwin shares a birthday with another great man who held equally racist ideas. That was Abraham Lincoln. Like Lincoln and the rest of the white race in the 1800s, Darwin never doubted the superiority of his kind. Like Lincoln, Darwin became a hero in the cause of human rights despite himself." I suppose I could have phrased my comments differently, but overall I stand by my comments - They did hold views that many would consider racist. This of course was in a different time, and knowledge available was not the same as it was today. I do not want to "smear" any of the people noted in my comments, as all had a major impact on all of us and where we are today.

I took the family down Sunday, alas the price was way too steep for us to buy in, but it was fun hearing the music drift through the streets of Old Sac. The "free" stages were nice, and I liked hearing Mumbo Gumbo (so nice that Chris Webster is back full time!) on one corner, and the oompah of a tuba on another. My biggest complaint is price - but then again that is quite often my biggest complaint, be it for a pint of beer, or to listen to some live music.

"Nobel Laureate William Shockley & Emma B Shockley Memorial Park". You may have read about it in the Sacramento Bee, or perhaps the Auburn Journal or somewhere else. What the park name does not mention is in addition to winning a Noble Prize for his work on developing the Transistor (Time Magazine listed Mr. Shockley in the 100 Most influention people of the Century too), Mr. Shockley was a big supporter of Eugenics. Now here is the story:

In a trust, the Shockleys provided for 28 acres of land they own to be given to the Auburn Park and Recreation District, the gift came with 2 conditions: 1) The land be used for "passive" use only, and 2) It be given the name mentioned above. The District Board voted 3-2 to accept this gift. Subsequent to the accepting of the land, the Auburn Journal discovered and reported the facts relating to Mr. Shockleys involvement and support of Eugenics, a subject that was never discussed during the decision to accept or deny the property. As some may know, I serve on the Auburn Rec District board, and embarassingly I had no idea of Mr. Shockley's racist past. I did object to the acceptance of the property, but it had nothing to do with the name.

Now that the news has come out, it has created quite a stir. I am writing today, to shed light on this issue and hopefully solicit some opinions from those not so closely attached to the subject. Here is a little more information, and choices as I see it, please note that at this time there is no mechanism to now "return" the gift.

1) Accept the terms of the gift and live with the conditions as listed.

2) Accept the terms, but come up with some additional verbage to the name, some have suggested the Nobel Laureate...... a park for enjoyment by all, dedicated in a year when America celebrated it's first African American President...

3) One suggested writing the name on a bottom of a rock, they placing the rock name side down.

4) I have received a legal opinion saying that gifts of "Real Property" can not have restrictions placed on the gift (this makes sense, what if they said we had to put up a statue of something or someone some would find offensive, or perhaps the restrictions stated it could only be used by certain people), we can proceed down this path and see if the restrictions are valid, and if not have them removed & proceed naming the park as we normally would (public notice, solition of suggestions & public debate & vote) - Of course this brings up ethical or moral questions about "gift giving".

5) Ignore the request, as there is no real threat of action, there is no "trust police" & no regulatory agency will likely object - again there are moral issues tied to this decision.

Everyone I know agrees Mr. Shockleys racist views are ignorant, ugly and should not be condoned. But at the same time many also note that people such as Darwin, Andrew Jackson or even Abraham Lincoln also had racist views or participated in actions or practices such as slave ownership which obviously are unacceptable, yet all have been memorialized to one extent or another. Is there a difference between Shockley and Goethe (whose name still appears on google maps)? Did Shockleys "good" outweigh his "bad"? Do we spend too much time and energy focusing on a name? I am sure one can come up with many questions.

This issue is not going away soon, it definetly sparks conversation and debate, I look forward to hearing some of Sacramento Press writers and readers comments - As always, Keep Smilin'!

We in Auburn are trying to rehabilitate a swimming pool, there is a platerers union already warning us they are keeping an eye on the project, issues such as prevailing wage also come into play. And back to the climate without tort reform, insurance compainies cringe at the thought of a bunch of volunteers out there with weedwackers and other power tools taking care of business on public land!
Having been a Director on a Park and Rec District Board for over 10 years now, it amazes me at how high costs are. One of the biggest expenses is dealing with regulatory issues, we are looking to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get the state to sign off on arsenic levels due to the discovery of a couple exploratory "pits" found on property we want to build a trail on. Prevailing wage issues, fees, etc... Funding for parks is minimal at best, and if prop 1A is attacked it will only get worse. Raising fees only hurts those who need parks the most, recreation programs typically do not cost rec districts very much as most programs are contract programs and pay for themselves, of course aquatic programs are big "losers" on the balance sheet, but provide so much to a community they are real hard to cut - especially in a climate such as the Sac Valley. Cuts are tough, and most park departments already are running at bare bones be it good or bad times, funding for new facilities via mitigation fees seems to be available when markets are good, but general fund dollars are always few and far between. Good luck to the council - I hope they realize the benefits parks bring, and the money they save in the big picture!

Strong Mayor position only works when you like who is the mayor. I like KJ in many respects, but honestly feel he spends more time in press freindly opportunities & blowing smoke than working on running the city & my point is that is probably o.k, as the City has a professional & experienced Manager better equiped to direct policy and budgetary decisions. A politician who's likely most concerned with rising up the political ladder or getting re-elected has priorities not necessarily aligned with making the tough decisions that are best for the city.

Somehow the concept that the individual is responsible to society got flip flopped. BTW when will politicians start writing a bill that will ban pencils and other writing devices that allow for spelling errors. More legislation, more money, more loss of rights. Individual responsibility & common sense needs to find a place, next thing I know we will be shutting down bridges due to suicides.

I am pleased with many decisions the Council has made lateley. Kevin I do hope you choose to stay local for an extended period. While town hall meetings and gathering input sounds good, fact is this is a representative system. The feel good appearance of listening to the people may look good, it does not really provide solutions. Just like the old I am paying for it myself, sounds good but really doesn't do much. The people elected you to make decisions, input if nice but action is the key! - Good job on K Street I know that will help, but it sure looks like the Mall needs some help. Strong stances will get us much further than political correctness. Don't worry about re-election, or your next step up the ladder - lead by example, and get things done - as mentioned before, follow through on your promises! and as always...

Today I received in the mail an advertisement from Toyota trying to entice me into the dealership for service. On the cover was an advertisement "Check Engine Light Inspection". My initial reaction was what the #@% is this (heck o.k!). A little further reading told me that you are paying $19.95 for someone to read a code, and tell you what the code says. Well folks, I can almost guarantee you are wasting your money, as the next comment from the service adviser will be something to the affect of: we found a code P0301, which shows a misfire on your vehicle, it will require additional diagnosis to determine the cause of this code, we will need your approval for 2 hours of diagnosis time to figure this out, of course we will credit back the $19.95 charge for the code read.

Folks, do not fall for gimmicks, being an owner of a repair shop in Citrus Heights, I regularly see customers complaining about scams regarding "Free Diagnosis" or "Free Check Engine Diagnosis", only to leave in anger. I love the one from AAMCO in regards to their "Free" Diagnosis, then on the radio real fast you hear: "External Diagnosis Only”....., this one really gets me laughing. Please ask any legitimate technician what an "External Diagnosis is", it is a joke, basically telling you if we lift the hood it then will require an "internal diagnosis"! What they need to say is we will do a free code read, but you will have to pay to find out what is causing that code, which usually will run into a diagnosis of 1-2 hours. These adds are the equivalent of a doctor advertising a Free medical evaluation, then to find out it only includes checking the temperature, they advise to find out what is wrong, you have to pay a $100.00 Office Visit.

I strongly recommend people look for legitimate diagnosis specials. Any quality shop will charge you for either a 1 or 2-hour diagnosis depending on the nature of the complaint. This is quite appropriate, what you are paying for is a trained, qualified and certified technician to spend time with you’re vehicle, determining the cause of a problem, be it a "Check Engine Light", Overheating, or other concern. Diagnosis is the most important part of the repair procedure, and one you really cannot get for free. Once a diagnosis is completed, you should be provided with an estimate to properly fix the problem. Be forewarned, solutions are not always guaranteed & sometimes you will pay for a diagnosis to find out that the fuel cap is bad, or not properly secured. But again, you can be saving yourself hundreds of dollars because you might unnecessarily replace a $200.00 Oxygen Sensor because a code reader came up with an O2 Sensor code.
Code reading is not a diagnosis; it is only the 1st step in a process, no different than. Most ads for free or next to free services are come-ons to get you in the shop then hit you with much higher diagnostic charges. At our shop, we advertise for a discounted diagnosis, we charge $59.88 for up to an hour of a technician’s time, often times we can even fix a problem such as an evaporative hose leak during that time. Our shop as others, will also work to credit back the diagnosis charges, but that will usually only apply to "Major" Repairs, typically those repairs $500.00 or more.

I think the key for people to find affordable repairs, is not to look for a quick fix but rather develop a relationship with a shop and its owner / employees. Just like any other business, restaurant, hairdresser, doctor or otherwise people treat their "regulars" with respect & provide a combination of price and service that will keep you coming back. We all have costs and expenses that need to be met, not to mention a hopeful level of profit (I am still waiting for that). The old saying "nothing is for free" is very real, one way or another you will be paying, be it sub-standard work or bait and switch tactics. You do not have to go to a dealer for great service, but you do have to look out for shady advertising stunts & pushing closing techniques

A good shop will inspect a vehicle for problems, and make recommendations. I suggest you listen to these, as most times they will prevent bigger repairs in the future or perhaps ensure a road trip is a positive experience not a nightmare stuck somewhere because your serpentine belt broke at 10:00 at night. Then again, if a salesman uses scare techniques or seems overly aggressive you might want to look for a second opinion!

I hope all have safe travels and only positive experiences the next time they go to an auto repair shop. And please remember vehicle repair is not an exact science, one of the best ways to find out how good a shop is, is by how they handle their warranty and comebacks. Mistakes happen, technicians are only human, but a good shop will always stand behind their work and attempt to the best of their abilities to make a customer happy.

As always, Keep Smilin’!

This Wednesday April Fools Day, SBL Entertainment and Marilyn’s on K will be presenting a wonderful and special evening of music. The Waybacks will be playing a rare club gig, which is almost sure to provide a great time for all who choose to attend. To categorize the Waybacks is tough, their unique sound is cross-genre as well as cross- generational. While surely not for everyone, (the Metal or Hip Hop crowd may not put this on their must see list), most others would & should. Fans of Americana, Jam Band, Folk, Country (Real Country), Rock-n-Roll, Swing, New Orleans Jazz, Jazz Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, Funk and / or a few other styles will want to attend.

The Waybacks are a 4 piece band that comes together and translates multiple influences into a musical stew, that satisfies the most finicky tastes. True to their roots, no 2 shows are the same, on any given night, one might hear a blend of originals pulled from one of their many albums, or perhaps songs in the working, side by side with of The Grateful Dead, or later Led Zeppelin, and when you least expect it a sweet ballad that harkens back to a 1940’s Swing, all done with stand-up bass, fiddle (or mandolin), acoustic (or electric) guitar & drums, in a way that is unique to the Waybacks, again this must be seen and heard to truly understand.

I encourage folks to Google the Waybacks, or perhaps visit their web site www.waybacks.com to learn more. Better yet, surf on over to www.archive.org and check out the live music archives (The Woodside show is great), or how about youtube!. But I really recommend digging into the wallet & supporting local music at Marilyn’s www.marilynsonk.com come and enjoy some good company, good drink & some great music.!! See you there, in the mean time….

Keep Smilin’!

Reminds me of the Music Man,.... we have trouble, right here in River City it starts with p and rhymes with t and that stands for Trouble..... Or maybe I am thinking of Dirty Dancing. Legislating morality is an interesting subject. I like the concept of "To Protect and Serve", not sure exactly what this law will protect or who it is serving. While I can think of may wiser ways to spend my money, I can not support this decision. I am sure there are many deputies signing up for enforcement of this law!!

There were 3 suicide attempts in the Auburn area in the past week. One jumped off a cliff near the Foresthill Bridge, another jumped off of a commercial building, of the 3, this was the only one that ended in death. It is a disturbing concept for me, further confusing by the public and dramatic methods utilized in all 3 attempts. As the pictures show, it is a wonderful and beautiful location, so sad to see such an ugly asterick upon it. I feel for the family and all who knew this person. I hope any that may feel suicide is an answer to their problems will reach out to someone, anyone.

I see the Sacramentopress as a great resource, that hopefully will spread beyond the boundaries of the fine city for which it is named after. Just as I often come down to enjoy the many opportunities offered by Sacramento, conversely I hope many in the city flatlands will take the time to head up the hill, to enjoy some of the opportunities available in the Foothills. From time to time, I hope to shed some light on some activities, events etc.

This weekend rain or shine would be a great time to come on up. One event in particular has a special interest to me, as I am helping to put it on! Saturday, The Ridge Golf Course and Bar & Grill 2020 Golf Course Way, Auburn CA 95602 (530-888-PUTT) will be hosting a great evening of great "semi" acoustic music, featuring Bob Woods and Gary Campbell. Bob Woods is arguably one of the best guitarists in the Sacramento Region, be it going toe to toe with the legendary Albert Lee with Sticky Vikki and the Pinecones, or perhaps guitaring for the infamous Chuck Wagon (who can forget Chuck's claim to fame "Disco Sucks"!)Gary Campbell is a wonderful songwriter / singer / guitarist who has been playing Honky Tonks from Lodi to Verdi for many decades now, these 2 entertainers are guaranteed to please with theire combination of songs from the saddle and rails (Bob in his other life really is a train engineer!) The warmup act (Dufour and Prior) will start around 7, Woods and Campbell will start around 8, but please come early. The Ridge is an award winning public golf course, and features a wonderful resturaunt and full bar, Saturday Happy Hour starts at ! There is a request for a $5.00 donation for this show. The Ridge is off of Bell Rd. inbetween Highways 49 & 80 (if you come up between 4 & 7 and say you heard about the show on sacramentopress the 1st beers on me!) Gary and Bob are pictured

If that's not your bag how about some of these fun offerings:

Constable Jacks, a wonderful "Blues Club", that has been hosting great music for many years now in a funky century old roadhous in Newcastle features tonight (Fri) at 9:30 The Sun Dogs (no not the old cajun Sundogs) cover is $7.00, Saturday The Daniel Castro Band hits the stage, cover is $15.00. To experience a show at Constable Jacks is very special. Just take the Newcastle Exit off of 80, address is 515 Main Street, Newcastle.

I am not sure who or what the band "Juicy" is, but I do know the California Club very well! Juicy plays Saturday at this dive joint in Old Town Auburn. The California Club has been a staple in Auburn probably a hundred years now. Not only is it the home of the Auburn Yacht club, the drinks are priced right and intamacy is an understatement when it comes to listening to music. Cover is $10.00 Music starts at 10, but again come early - there is a lot to do, see, eat and drink in Old Town Auburn, which is located off the Maple Street exit off of 80.

Another fun spot in Downtown Auburn is the Club Car. This place is upscale funk for lack of a better description. Offering a full bar and resturaunt with great appetizers and food, it is worth coming for that alone. Club Car again offers a wonderful atmosphere for live music too. Erin Gayden plays tonight (Fri) @ 8:30, with Combo Blue playing same time Saturday. for more visit www.clubcarauburn.com, The Club Car is in Downtown Auburn, you would take the Elm Street Exit. 836 Lincoln Way, Auburn 95603

A little past Auburn heading South on Highway 49 will find a great evening of entertainment in Georgetown. If you like Celtic music at all, Golden Bough is a must see and hear. This wonderful group will be playing Saturday at 3:00 PM in Georgetown, right on the main strip at the IOOF Hall. I have been to a few shows here, the venue is really neat, I highly recommend it. Call 530-622-6946 for more. Kids are only $5.00, Big Kids $10.00

If you would rather head North on Higway 49, well Grass Valley has a great evening of fun planned on Saturday night, The wonderful Center For the Arts presents Tippy Canoe (a ukelele based band). This fun spot is at 314 W. Main Street (at the top of the hill) in Grass Valley, stop in Auburn for dinner before heading aout there. The show starts at 8:00, $15.00 go to www.thecenterforthearts.org for more.

On a non-musical note, I would like to really recommend coming up Saturday morning, and enjoyin an interpretive hike hosted by a group called "The Canyon Keepers". This is a really beautiful time in the American River Canyon and Auburn State Recreaton Area. The Canyon Keepers will be starting off at the Old Foresthill Bridge right at the confluence of the Middle and North Forks of the American River. Just take the Hwy 49 Exit off of 80 and head towards cool, instead of heading right at the bottom of the hill, go straight a few feet and park. The hike starts at 9:00, you can call the Keepers at 530-885-3776, the hike will focus on the Historic Bridges in the Canyon. It is FREE!

Be it after a hike, before a show or otherwise, please spend some time at enjoying some of the wonderful offerings of Auburn. There are numerous shops, museums, galleries, eateries and other fun ways to spend your time (and money!). Today I will focus on some of the eateries in Old Town Auburn. I will start with the Auburn Ale House, brewery and resturaunt, Brewmaster Brian, his wife and wonderful staff have a lot to offer, from the best beer around to great food and spirits. If you have a little wine snobbiness in yourself there is no better place to flaunt it than Carpe Vino, Gary and his son have provided a very special place, offering the best selection of local wines to be found anywhere, they also have a great kitchen cooking up some very special dinners, serving in a very unique and historic setting. Bootlegers which is a long establiched eatery , steeped in the traditional "pub" atmosphere is headed up by Ty Rowe and his great staff. Great food is the specialty hear, from duck to steak all items are cooked to perfection, they offer both indoor and outdoor seeting, they also have the best bottled beer selection around. Next door to Bootleggers is Tio Pepe's, a family run you guessed it Mexican Resturaunt, Shelly, Eva and the rest of the gang offer the best in hospitality, not to mention the best Margarita's in Old Town!. Marybelles harkens back to the old soda fountain days, Tom and the crew offer a home made feel and menu that is always to be enjoyed, my boys love their milk shakes!! Awful Annies got it's start in Old Town, this award winning spot offers a great patio dining, always a wait for lunch or breakfast, but well worth it, the also serve dinner now. Our families favorit breakfast spot though is Eidelweis, their omelets are great, a wonderful view and great price, they also have a full "diner" influenced menue. In the back of Gold Rush Plaza is the Creekside Grille, some say this spot built around and over a bubbling creek has the best burgers in town. Cafe Delicias is another family owned spot inbedded in Auburn Tradition, and now spreading out around the valley. Founder Rueben and family still make the Old Town spot home, where he can be seen often behind the grille, this is the favorite of many locals, check them out. While on Friday or Saturday Eves you may have to wait a little bit, Olde Towne Pizza is worth it, the best pies for miles around, great service, cold beer and reasonable prices - the perfect combo. Just up the hill next to the Historic Courthouse, is Lattitudes which changes its menu on a monthly basis, representing different "lattitudes", be it Greece, Africa, Brazil or otherwise, the food is fresh, vegetarians always represented and below the main dining room is the ABA, which is a little more relaxed and offers a Bar Menu. Old Town's newest addition is Tsudas New York Deli, while I have not partaken in this spot yet, rumor has it the Pastrami sandwich is a sure fire hit. Now I am getting hungry, should have focused on the shops & galleries.

I hope you come up, I will highlight other offerings in the future, in the mean time....

Keep Smilin'

Nice article & interview, while I love to laugh and smile, stand up is not muy usual bag, opting most often for some sort of live music. I did recently depart from the norm and attend a show at the Punch Line featuring another Last Comic Standing winner Josh Blue, he was quite enjoyable - but the venue was a disapointment, agonizing long wait for service in a sardine can setting, with a un relaxing cattle call loading and unloading of the facility.

At my auto repair shop just off of Greenback and Sunrise in central Citrus Heights, there was a quite facinating mating ritual between about 8-10 turkeys. The Toms were all ligned up on one side, "presenting" themselves by puffing out all their feathers - while the Hens were lined up on the other side. Quite a special moment - I need to get a digital camera. What always amazes me is how the turkeys know how do disapear around the endo of October, soon to reapear after the holidays! Of course there were a couple folks that were wishing they had their shot guns with them too! Which brings up the question of "harvesting" wild "urban" turkeys. I do not think there are any natural predators of these birds, and population control is a legitimate topic. Not sure what the official take on that is -

I spent much more time at the Columbus and Bay weird corner store than most other Tower stores, I loved the giant posters they had out - I pass it semi regularly now and it is sad to have it gone. I agree on clerks, and highlighted their importance in another article. Music snobs are my favorite people - I just don't care what kind of music they are snobby about, as long as their passion is honest to themselves. These days I find the top 10 lists of "internet" places like CD Baby, Miles of Music (MOM), Village Records.. provide the best source of discovering new music - Or even better, listen to KVMR 89.5 FM, or www.kvmr.org check out their schedule for genre's you like - then find out how to buy the music & buy it! - Thanks for the info Wm - I lived in the Bay Area back in the 60's and early 70's - on our way to the mountains, we used to stop at a cool pizza parlor with a big organ, was that the Shakey's you speak of - in our town Shakeys used to play black and white comedy movies & have ragtime music - just one more of those early influences that shapes my likes today!

The options that run through my mind, while temporarily might provide some satisfaction, I am afraid the police might choose to come out for. Maybe if you complain this guy is rummaging through your garbage you will get a response, but other than that be careful, if this was his 1st introduction to his new neighbor, the next one might be worse. I never trust sites that don't tell you the whole story - If I go to the Sierra College, or other sites they tell me the cost of their programs, no dollar figures on this site. Personal opinion, looks like a sales pitch not unlike most pyramid programs I have run into. Successful programs will lay out exactly what they are selling, and what it will cost. Just an opinion, but I feel this type of submission is not a valuable submission for the sac press.

Like it or not, profit is the way it is, and frankly I have no problem with that. The Bee has a responsibility to it's owners to be a viable entity, and to provide a return on investment. On the flip side, owners have a responsibility to provide the tools and funding to the Bee to be able to produce a "quality" product. Unfortunately the current business model is not working, and more cuts are being made. Cuts will continue until a balance is found or the Bee shuts down. I feel the key to success will be to remain a daily paper, with home delivery. They will have to provide a rationale to advertisers to utilize the Bee to get their message out. Unfortunately appealing to (not trying to be snobby here, but short on time) a caring / "sophisticated" audience seems to be the hard way to attact an audience (Jonas Bros., Zoolander....) The Bee will have to adapt their model to reach a broader audience. I think reducing subscription fees dramatically (perhaps $5.00/mo) and increasing advertising could be a way to go. - Something like SN&R but on a daily basis, focusing more on "news". Sections will need to be added and deleted......I also think reducing "bias" will be another point to their success.... I really like flipping the pages of a daily paper in the morning - I want that tradition to continue, and all those who lost their job be re-hired and more. The Sac Press is great, and I hope they find a way to create the income necessary to grow & to begin to pay the staff what they deserve. There is room for both formats & hopefully they can compliment and support each other. - gotta run..

I feel to trivialize and minimize the redevelopment proposal for numerous entertainment facilities on K St. to $5.4 million for a mermaid-themed bar is very far from fair. The K street renovation project is one of the few serious proposals to create jobs in the construction business now, and the potential to generate much more tax & job revenue in the future. Be it a corporation looking to re-locate, an NCAA organization trying to determine where to host a tuournament, or a family in Auburn trying to decide where to spend their limited entertainment dollars, the K Street project represents a lot of opportunity for the City and region in general. I hope people listen to the bean counters when it is explained the cost benefit of a project such as this. I applaud the staff and council for taking a proactive approach on this. I also hope that people realize that bids for construction are becomming increasingly competitive, and cost estimates from even 6 months ago are comming in much lower. Now is the best time possible to move forward if you can. Also realize as cheesy as Old Town Sac is, we drove down there from out of town, spent more than we should have (not at Fanny Ann's though - best deal around), & had a wonderful time at a fun destination. But OTS is limitied in it's offerings & is more of a "tourist trap" than K-St would be. Communities throughout the area are working to improve reasons for people to visit & spend under a variety of titles, from Streetscape to Downtown Redevelopmnet. Sacramento has a leg up on most other communities & to lose the momemtum and opportunity of this project I feel would be unfortunate. It is so much more than a mermaid-themed bar, it is an investment that if done right will bring in great returns on so many levels. As always.... Keep Smlin'!!

Ryan brings up some good points, but one thing I like is there is no hiding the fact many of the submissions in the Sac Press are opinions. One of the problem of the normal media sources is that editorial / philisophical opinions have infultrated "articles" or design of the paper. The Sacramento Bee is well known for this, and todays front section is a perfect example. I think this is one of the reasons for the decline of papers. I feel most people would rather get the details, and develop their own opinions. As the Sac Press grows, I think this format, where information can be presented, yet access and encouragement for "instant" debate is provided. This will actually help reduce bias in reporting. Just an opinion!
