I'm thinking that some people just don't realize what the up or down arrows are for. My understanding is that they were to rate the article and not the content of the article. How can an informational article be voted down? You might as well vote down on one that tells about how many police are going to be at a police event and what is going to happen throughout the day. It just makes no sense.

I appreciate what the Kings mean to some people, and that there are genuine fans who love them. But this whole relationship with the Maloofs, them threatening to leave and then acting like they're so beneficent by deciding to stay, and us celebrating that...feels a little like the girl who's baby daddy smacks her on Jerry Springer, but who takes him back, cuz she's "sure he'll change, he just needs time."

I think it's mainly for people who commute via public transportation or who don't have cars. I haven't had a car for 7 years and this is an awesome thing. Since there are short trips to Davis or other parts of Sac that are either out of the way of public transit or would take far too long. For people who commute and leave their cars at home or at transit parking lots, this would be a way for them to attend meetings that are a little further away, without having to bring their car into town and pay all day parking for them. Or if they just want to get away at lunch, but don't like the options closest, this opens up other parts of Sac to them.

Also, if you are an employee of an organization that is involved in the Sacramento TMA, like CalEPA employees, you can use your work email and the one-year membership fee is dropped to $25. I believe the application fee is also waived. AND if you use the code SACRAMENTO when you register, you'll get a $50 driving credit.

I think the only downside of the event was a handicapped woman in a mobile scooter that was getting agitated at the workaround that ZipCar had regarding handicapped accessible vehicles being available. Basically, I believe the VP talked to her and stated that if a handicap accessible car was necessary, that they would need a 7 day advance notice to get one to a location. And she didn't sound happy at that solution. I'd be interested in seeing what their plan is to address that issue, beyond what he offered.

I still like it as a walking mall. The argument that it'll generate more business because people will see the businesses there is bunk. People know that there are business on K street. If they're not going because parking is hard to find on existing trafficked streets, then they're not going to go if it opens up. Especially if it's before all this supposedly amazing stuff is going to be happening between 9th and 7th.

The main problems with K are the huge blank spots where there are no stores and the fact that you have to deal with the gangs of ghetto people at the St Rose stop, and those across the street at the main downtown plaza bus stop.

I think all the complaining is ridiculous. Lower the hours to 9 or 10 pm. Give them some parking area. It's not like the impact will be huge, for god sakes, they're just on the opposite side of the same block that they were on before. Everyone will more than likely still park on 23rd, J or 24th like they always did. I don't see how the Golden Bear makes it on this block and Cornerstone doesn't. Cornerstone is a much nicer establishment than the Golden Bear.

It's ridiculous that a city the size of ours continues to languish when it comes to efficient, on-time, safe, transit systems. The limiting of routes and the raising of fares only serves to make less pay the lions share, with the majority of those who could ride, not being effectively serviced.

I still question whether their budget is actually a budget shortfall from the previous year, or just from what they predicted for this year. It seems that in the past I've heard that their budget increases every year, and when the increase can't be funded, then they call it a shortfall, even though the budget may still be higher than the previous year.

In the end, they need to realize that a handful of people cannot pay for the entire transit system. Their management needs to figure out how to manage this situation properly and ensure that they get the most amount of riders, on the most amount of routes, at the optimal fee.

Trapper, $1000 for a 500 sq ft studio is ridiculous. I was paying less than that for a 600 sq ft studio at Capital Towers on the 14th floor.

I know a number of people living at 1801, at 16th and H, Capital Towers and a few other places. The people I know that live at these places often have roommates. Without the roommates they couldn't afford the housing. Even if their vacancies are relatively low, the occupancy is around 2 to 3 times what it would be expected to be for most apartments of the same size normally. I think if they made more affordable housing, such as what bill stated, 2 bedrooms for $1000 is right on par with what they should run. It's ridiculous to assume that most working people can afford these overpriced places.

I think the problem is that we're continuously told, as a city, to be uppity. To only expect the best. The problem is that the best doesn't come and we end up with high end apartments that the majorityof people who live in Sacramento can afford. We need more inexpensive options. Not cheap, but certainly not "high end boutiques, restaurants, and housing." How can anyone miss the whole financial issue this country is in?

How can someone see that and expect people to be able to afford anything that is that out of reach? We have studios in midtown and downtown that are so ridiculously overprices it's laughable. $1100 for a 500 sq ft apartment. Are they serious? I saw a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment that was running $2800. We need housing that meets the markets needs and attracts more people here. Most of the housing at these high prices are ending up with large amounts of vacancies. Which is better to make $4 or 500 less each month, or to have an apartment vacant for 3/4 of the year?

K street isn't a 6 foot wide sidewalk to share with pedestrians, but a 40+ foot thoroughfare for all sorts of pedestrian traffic. If pedestrians and light rail can coexist there, I'm sure adding bikes to the mix wouldn't cause undue burden.

I don't see that opening it up to traffic would help anything. It can only go from 7th to 12th. That's hardly helping anyone.
Yeah. I think that needs to be pointed out. A number of people have said, in other articles, that they will be paying the same rate that all businesses in the Sacramento area pay. The difference is that those other businesses RENT the water. The water, even if a slightly smaller percentage, ends up back in our waterways.

However, we are known for our droughts, and given that fact, do we really want a company here who is taking the water supply and sending it elsewhere? Never to remotely re-enter our water system?

And his response wasn't, "We got a wake up call with the NCAA when they said we are no longer going to hold big-time college basketball in Sacramento because [we] have an outdated arena." It was, "Now those days are over. The NCAA has rejected Sacramento's bid to host future regional tournaments. Frankly, the idea of the NCAA rejecting our NBA arena is embarrassing to Sacramento."

I'm not embarrassed. Last time I checked the NBA is higher class than the NCAA and I don't see any teams refusing to play at our arena. He needs to get his priorities and reality straight.

Absolutely, it was interesting. Always nice to not try and out argue but just express varying points of view. I'm not a friend of his, however I had seen him around 5 or 6 years ago and occasionally relatively recently. I was just more angry at the idea that the public wanted someone to pin their feelings of hatred on, rather than waiting for actual evidence. Since, I'd hate to think of myself in his position and innocent and getting this presumption of guilt heaped upon him.

I will definitely be following this case.

I didn't say you made the last actions sinister. I'm saying people do. That's a lot of what's happening. People are calling for a hanging before any actual evidence has been produced. Pictures prove nothing other than an interest in guns. If that in and of itself were such a horrible things than most of the midwest and southern U.S. and the central valley of California would be suspicious (the 2nd amendment as well, since it says you can bear arms, so you know it wants to!)

I do concede that he turned himself in, however that isn't proof that he did anything. Only that they were looking for him, and he thought it better to do that, than to hide. I do acknowledge that they've charged him (PC187 and VC20001), however an accusation isn't a verdict.

A photo of a person with guns should be reason to consider him a threat? I don't want to start something new. And by no means am I a gun advocate, although I will concede that I don't see a problem with people owning them. But by your statement, you have a problem and would see as a threat, someone who was doing something that they are allowed to do under the Constitution. How does that seem like a valid argument?

Lastly, I don't think it's a silly activity. The picture says nothing of his ownership or use of the gun. Just that he was near them at some point.

And I think the fact that the families are sympathizing with each other says something as well. No one is happy with the incident. And where are these agreed upon facts coming from? Newspaper articles with guesstimations as to what happened. Approximations by police? A car potentially hit a human being. Proof or facts is something on the car to indicate that the person was hit, blood, skin, whatever.

I think assuming he had tons of guns and used them often is wrong. The picture shows nothing than at one point he was near guns and a photo was taken. Much as he indicates on his facebook profile that he had driven a bunch of exotic cars. I wouldn't expect, if I had seen pictures of him in those cars, that he owned all of them, or drove them often.

The playful wasn't in the context of referring to the guns. It was in reference to him throwing ice at a bartender. For all we know it was playful and the bartender took it the wrong way, or security or whathaveyou. But immediately when people want to convict someone, they immediately make everything he did in his last hours sinister. It ensures that he is the predetermined wrongdoer before any facts or evidence has been shown to indicate the actual series of events.

The pictures and story say nothing more than he was near guns, was near an iPhone, wore a tie once, was a playful, possible belligerent drunk (wow that's unheard of for 20 something males), and was back later that night at the club. I've heard no eyewitness accounts of the incident, just rough approximations of what may have happened.

You're right, the lines are blurred with the city council! And they're also blurred in congress and the senate, we should take away their power as well!

Reform isn't rushed! I mean, just because the mayor started the process immediately after he became mayor and it was put on the ballot before a charter review committee could even begin looking at it...psh...I mean, that's not rushed or anything.

And the city manager does work in silence and secrecy! I mean, come on, just because he has to answer to the city council doesn't mean anything! It means that he's scary and going to take over everything! *hides*

And just because the mayor can fire the higher up management doesn't mean they'll be beholden to him for their jobs and push through projects for him and thus create a system where he must be pleased in order for them to keep their jobs or anything... psh!

And it's not scary that we're having a Strong Mayor Initiative. After all it's in a number of other California cities! I mean granted, it's different from all of them in one way or another, like no ethics committee and the mayor having the ability to fire all staff including the city attorney and others. But I mean...other than that it's exactly the same, while being entirely different.

And last, just because the Mayor formed the charter review committee after he'd already placed his initiative on the ballot, and now he isn't listening to their findings and isn't planning on revising the initiative, doesn't mean anything...right?

Until I hear proof of what exactly happened and the sequence of events, then there is no proof. Everyone is hearing stories and immediately forming a judgment. How would any of you like that if you were convicted, wrongly or otherwise, to be immediately assumed to be guilty?

I'd also love to see as some said, some places that are open later. That's a huge area, right next to downtown, the potential seems to be limitless. I'd also like to see the buildings on the site preserved as much as they can be, as they are a part of our history and just amazing to look at aside from that.

Marion, I believe the rule of political posturing is, "If you say the same thing enough times, it magically becomes true, regardless of it's actual truth."

e.g.
-The Strong Mayor proposal is the same as most CA cities have, when it's not like any of the other Strong Mayor charters.
-That you don't value the voters if you criticize the process in which their signatures were gathered, or if you think that a longer consideration time should be given, to allow them to fully understand what is happening and voice their opinion.
-That the current charter doesn't give you any vote on what happens with the city manager, even though he can be removed by the city council that voters elected.
-That it's "business-as-usual" if you don't give the Mayor all the power he wants. Cuz that's "progressive", and you wouldn't want to be seen as being against "progress" would you?

(feel free to let me know if I forgot any others that need repeating in order to make them true)

An actual barrage or the appearance of a barrage will sway just as many people to not visit the library and not make use of it's resources. If the city sees the resources not being used because people aren't willing to walk down the same side of the street at the library, then how will it keep funding? If that happens the homeless are in the same situation as find themselves now.

Most already hang out all day in Cesar Chavez Park. It's getting so that that part of downtown is the 2nd Loaves and Fishes.

I agree with later commenters that if they were cleaned it would be better. Also if they're going to be moved elsewhere around downtown that's great. I don't mind the homeless utilizing resources, just not abusing the resources. And it does look bad when we have such a high concentration in one area.

I never cared for the benches personally. They tended to be dirty and had bird crap on them, making them not particularly inviting. Additionally, they were often covered in a homeless person's belongings making them inaccessible or uninviting to sit down on.

I also knew friends who mentioned to me that the area was less inviting because it felt like you had to suffer a barrage of homeless people in order to make it into the library.

I'd like to see that they were moved someplace else, maybe to area parks or along a major thoroughfare where people may walk and could use them to take a rest occasionally.

I think it's crap that they're destroying all these structures which are so obviously historic. Does anyone know how to have another cataloging done? Is that something that has to be requested and performed by the city or is it some other organization?

I'd hate to see more buildings/history lost because short sighted people want to build on those sites, rather than check out other areas which would be less harmful to the city's history. How long is it until they tear down the governor's mansion because it happens to be a prime spot and they need another hotel?

I'd prefer that they get the concessions that they are asking for on the vacant lot, in exchange for bringing up the existing hotel to code and entirely renovating it. Something similar to what was done at the Sheraton at 13th and K.

See, that's what I thought too, even though I live downtown and a majority of trash bins are put in the alleys for pickup. So, to be sure, in my e-mail I asked what services were included in the "Street Cleaning" mention on the signs and was sent this reply.

>>>
The signs that show no parking due to street cleaning entail both the street sweeping and the street service of lawn and garden debris. The other program that has been affected, in the solid waste department, by budget constraints is the neighborhood clean up program which has been suspended.

I've talked to some and found that they have a certain method to the madness, as far as what they will or won't tag on, not that everyone follows those rules. Also, I've found some that see it as a form of expression regardless of where it is, I don't agree in that case.

That's awesome. I've often wondered whether this awesome part of Sacramento's history would be lost as more and more development (8th and K), sees the destruction of some amazing tunnels and an interesting part of our history that should be saved if at all possible.
