Introduction/Background: The purpose of the following open letter is to outline quality of life problems that many residential neighbors now face from over concentration of alcohol "entertainment" establishments in Midtown whether related to Second Saturday or other weekends as well. The article also includes recommended solutions to these problems but so far Midtown Business Association and city leaders have largely ignored them. This letter was written cooperatively by long-time Midtown residents, Bill Burgua, Karen Jacques, Dale Kooyman and Vito Sgromo, all of whom have successfully worked for years with many other residents to create a vibrant residential and business Midtown, which
“Well you roll on roads over fresh green grass. For your lorry loads pumping petrol gas. And you make them long, and you make them tough. But they just go on and on, and it seems that you can’t get off… Well you’ve cracked the sky, scrapers fill the air. But will you keep on building higher til there’s no more room up there? … I know we’ve come a long way, Were changing day to day, But tell me, where do the children play?” Cat Stevens In the rush to make Sacramento a big city we seem to concentrate on the expanding bars, restaurants, basketball arena, high rises, and other superficial aspects of a big city. We forget that key components to a successful revitalized city are the childr
It seems that Sacramento does not know how to limit the massive over concentration of liquor outlets in Midtown. Not only are inebrated drivers at risk but also the residents in the surrounding neighborhoods.
There are 2 second Saturdays: the art openings and the alcohol wild parties. If Second Saturday ended at 10:00 p.m. then most of the nearby residents could live without fear that their homes, cars, properties and lives would not be harmed. Unlike your experience Ronda, this violence is brought to our neighborhood and does not originate from the existing residents. I am sure if you lives next to 27th and J Street you would have a different opinion.
Once again Mr Carr covers up the truth. Three protests have been files against the bar, GV Hurley's.! The public has lost trust in the ABC, Alcohol Beverage Control Agency due to similar bad decisions to cover up the truth. Mr Carr has done ABC, the bars and the public a disservice by his actions.
Its seems the promoters, city officials and people who do not live near Marshall Park forget that the park is not a regional but neighborhood park. The size of these evnst exceeds the size of the park. These loud events belong in a regional park. These events were billed as family events yet I saw very little family activities. It was developed to bring a drnking young crowd to support the bars accross the street and negatively impact the surrounding neighborhood with noise, traffic and litter. Marshall Park needs to have special events in a smaller scale that include children activities. At atime when Midtown Buisnesses are trying to cope with the removal of graffiti , was it wise to have a graffiti artists?: Yes there was plenty of liquor, loud music, skate boarding and roller derby women. What age group were they trying to attract? Before we turn Midtown into a large playgound for people in their early 20's Lets not forget the children, middle ageand senior population who also live in Midtown. Finally lets plan activities in scale with the park and the neighborhood. Lets not forget the rights of the neighbors who have to live next to these loud events. They also have rights!
Conversation about: Second Saturday changes coming next month
Residents have worked hard since the 1970's to restore the historic houses only to have city officials and MBA misuse an art walk as an excuse to throw a wild party to fee the alcohol businesses on J Street. The biggest irony is that Second Saturday is destroying not revitalizing Midtown. To add insult to injury, the resident tax payers are forced to pay taxes to support this out of control street party. It is too bad we do not have the city and business leadership to match the demands of our city.
