<content type="text">It's a sad state of affairs that the SafeGround crowd sucks up most of the news, when the city and county should be working on building very low cost permanent housing with on-site support. But I get the feeling that the SafeGround folks and their supporters don't really want to see a solution to homelessness. For the SafeGround employees and their scumbag lawyer Mark Merin, it's just an opportunity to profit off peoples continued misery. For the elected official who get their name in print everytime their is a story about the homeless, it's a chance to let the voters know "they care" without having to actually do anything.

These are the types of programs that are going to get people off the street and these are they types of programs that our elected officials should be supporting.

<content type="text">So if SCUSD doesn't have, as you say, "enough programs or decent schools to keep people in the district" what makes you think that having a comprehensive high school on the Sac High campus will change any of that? Sounds to me like you're not going to be happy no matter what the district does.

Which leads me to wonder what all this is really about in the first place.</content>

<content type="text">You don't need to destroy two successful programs in the process of trying to get your way. You should work to make Hiram Johnson---the Comprehensive High School that serves East Sac---a better school. You should demand that the district to not make intra-district transfers so easy. They cost our students much needed money. You can start with your fellow Sacramento Comprehensive High School Coalition colleague James Broderick. He takes his kids out of the district and sends them to Rio. I hate to see all that ADA money being lost by our district.</content>

<content type="text">And let's be clear about how much Camp and his team cares about the working people of Sacramento: Zilch. They purposely pitted two working class neighborhoods (Oak Park and Tahoe Park) against each other just so they could have their way during the redistricting fiasco. It became very apparent to those of us watching that Camp cares more about himself and his cronies on the Council then the working people of Sacramento. Time for the Labor Council to give Camp the boot as well.</content>

<content type="text">The Cohn Map is in effect the same map (#30) that labor boss Bill Camp was pushing for on the redistricting commission. It's safe to assume that Labor sees a big financial stake in the railyards and would like to have an ally represent that area. Sacramento is a labor town and I think it's important for labor to have a role in the redevelopment of that area, but not at the expense of the rest of the neighborhoods in the city.</content>

<content type="text">Actually, the deviation is not a technicality or distraction. It is the main criteria that must be used when drawing up new maps. From the City's own website on redistricting:

"For the U.S. congress, strive for strict population equality; no difference is too small if it could have
reasonably been avoided. For local and legislative cases: Total deviation below 10% may not constitute prima facie equal protection violation; above 10% needs strong affirmative defense. However, in Larios v. Cox (2004) the court concluded that even +5% is not a safe harbor. (For example +1% and -9% still totals 10%, but one district was more than 5% over/under). The more deviation, the more potential lawsuit challenge."

http://www.cityofsacramento.org/redistricting/documents/RedistrictingPrimer1-Criteria.pdf

If the Council goes forward with this plan, they should expect a court challenge.</content>

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/07/brandon-mcinerney-planned-and-carried-out-execution-of-gay-classmate.html

"King was bullied by McInerney and other boys at the school, Deputy Dist. Atty. Maeve Fox said in her opening statement in the trial, which is being conducted at a courthouse in Chatsworth. But shortly before his death, King had begun wearing high heels, makeup and earrings to school and had become more confident in himself, she said. “Larry King for the first time in his life wasn’t taking it anymore,” Fox said. “And he started to give people what I prefer to call the proverbial chin. Only it was more profane. The proverbial ‘f ... you.’” The day before King was shot, the two boys had been bickering in a eighth-grade science class, she said. When King got up to get a drink of water, “Brandon said ‘I am going to shoot him.’ And this is what a student will testify to.” The next day McInerney pulled a .22-caliber handgun out of his backpack and shot King in the head, authorities have said."

So I take it from your post that you believe a 15 year old boy who stands up to his tormentors deserves to get his brains blown out?</content>

<content type="text">"I also said "harrassed". But there are many cases of gays, some of which are transexual, bisexual, etc, who have badgered, conned, and bullied victims into sex, or relationships."

Some gays are not transexual, bisexual, or-as you put it-"ect." They are either gay, bisexual or transexual. I'm not aware of anyone who is an "ect." Still, I doubt that anyone of these folks could con or bully an unwilling straight person into sex or a relationship.

"Have any of them committed suicide? I think so, but I'd have to research it a bit. They've certainly left a mark on some people's brains."

Let me know how that research turns out. I doubt you'll find anything of the kind.

"There seems to be some sort of implied saintlyhood on behalf of gays lately amid all the concern for their safety, their rights, their pursuit of happiness."

Not sainthood. Just our rights and protections afforded us under the Constitution.

"The truth is that amid the gay/transexual//bisexual demographis lies a percentage of behavioral misfits too. Some are downright mean. some are persistant to the point of harrassment. some are criminal."

You're right. These people are often called idiots or criminals.

"Jeffery Damer, John Gacy for example. Were their victims killed because they were straight? Maybe..they certainly didn't seek out other gays it seems. The evidence doesn't suggest so."

The evidence doesn't merely suggest, but proves that Jeffery Dahmer picked up his victims at gay bars. John Wayce Gacy went to his grave denying that he was gay, but most certainly was. He said he committed his horrendous crimes because of a loathing of homosexuals. But are you really comparing bullied gay children to serial killers? That is an odd comparison to me.

"The point is, everyone should be on equal footing in any program that prevents bullying or harrassment."

That would be great in theory, but the evidence shows that LGBT kids and those perceived to be LGBT are the overwhelming victims of harassment and bullying. Until that changes, let's put our resources where they are needed.

"Now it seems as though it is only meant to condition people into accepting gays, transexuals, bisexuals as their peers."

That's because gays, transexuals and bisexuals ARE your peers. Hate to break the news to you.

"Not all of us are comfortable being badgered into doing so. I don't want to bully or harrass gays at all, but I don't want anyone telling me I'm a bad person because I don't embrace the concept or the lifestyle."

Being gay, bisexual or transgender isn't a concept or lifestyle. It is an innate part of who those individual are. Nobody is forcing you to like it if you choose not to. Folks are just asking that LGBT kids are able to get an education free of harassment, intimidation or violence.

"I also am not comfortable having my kids taught that they must embrace the concept or the lifestyle, especially when they are forced to do so."

See above.

"I was exposed to gays, transexuals, and self-described bisexuals for a lot of my younger years. Some were good, some were just OK; Some were just annoying and others downright scary."

I'm sorry that you had some bad experiences with some gay or downright scary LGBT individuals. Sounds like they were idiots. It seems you have allowed your few bad experiences to paint the entire LGBT community with a broad brush. Fortunately, we don't make public policy on the bad experiences of a few individuals. Public policy is--or should be--designed for the greater good.

"Some people just don't accept "no" very well, and are persistent to the point of harrassment or worse, and when you retaliate you are seen as homophobic, hateful, or a bully."

I've been hit on by many folks--both gay and straight--who are so socially inept they don't take no for a answer. Again, these people are called idiots. Still, I've never felt to need to "retaliate" for someone's social ineptness. Maybe that's why I've never been called heterophobic, hateful or a bully.

"So Ask again.....when does this program protect non gays from bullying or harrassment? Or is it just one way here?"

See above.</content>

Really NO ONE wants it? That's the first I've heard of that. Actually, the Sutterville Road crossing make the most sense in terms of creating the most access for the people of West Sacramento.</content>

@Hunnicutt. Those are the costs of living in a civilized society. At some point we have to stop with all the hand wringing and accept that some folks are incapable of living, full productive lives and that it is our obligation to help those in need. It's called the social contract. The other part of that contract is that folks in need have to use those services when they are made available to them. No camping along the river or Safe Ground B.S.. Law enforcement should be used to vector the homeless directly into services.

It's really not that complicated.</content>

<content type="text">I think it's a mistake to think that once the street music stops, the crowds will automatically disperse. I think there will be more problems when the crowds have nothing to do to occupy their attention. Efforts should be made to have bands and other entertainment throughout the evening to give folks something to do other than drink and start fights. Spread the venues out so that not everyone crowds onto 20th Street. The R Street Corridor, K Street and Capitol Mall between 15th and 17th would be great locations for bands to play.</content>

While there may be waiting list to get into emergency shelters, it certainly doesn't take EIGHT years to get housed. SafeGround is not interested in emergency shelters, they are only interested in setting up squats along the river and starting a new NPO that takes in donations. Nothing they are proposing will help get the homeless housed. That is why they are not taken seriously by the folks at City Hall.

BTW Mr. Merin....that's quite a fancy manpurse you're wearing. I wonder how many tents and sleeping bags could have been bought with what you paid for that thing.</content>

<content type="text">This isn't just about McDonald's---although it is ironic that a company that contributes so greatly to the health woes of this country want to set up shop next to a childhood obesity office and two major hospitals. One of the most important roles of local government is what decisions it makes about it's land uses. Stockton Blvd and the rest of the city's commercial corridors are ideally suited for neighborhood serving developments that promote walkability, community, and a sense of place. When I was out gathering signatures today in opposition to the McDonald's proposal today, the neighbors were--without exception--opposed to this development.

How would you like to pay for it?

<content type="text">Remarkable that the SafeGround folks are now on record as being opposed to finding shelter for the homeless. It really tells you what their priorities are. They prefer to give the homeless a sleeping bag and let them fend for themselves in the cold and the rain, all the while they use the homeless as a fundraising tool.

I don't think its any coincidence that the day after they got shot down by the City Council they're sending out alarming Facebook requests for sleeping bags and tarps to be donated to SafeGround. Trying to stay relevant I guess. Got to earn those paychecks somehow......</content>

<content type="text">Here's the key line in the article:

"Noell said he'll wait until the oversupply of vacant new and existing homes in the suburbs has been reduced. Until then he can't get the financing and too much uncertainty still exists, he said."

Because of Fargo and Co.'s overdevelopment of the Natomas floodplain we have all these vacant and half built lots in the city's central core. The damage that woman caused to the city will be felt for decades.</content>

<content type="text">Safe Ground advocates have been billing the homeless campground as a bridge from homelessness to permanent housing. By Tracie Rice-Bailey's own account she has been homeless for 13 years. Why hasn't she availed herself to permanent housing during that time? Safe Ground is a huge scam by the poverty pimps at Loaves and Fishes. The City and County have been wise to put their efforts into funding permanent housing and ignoring the the Safe Ground nonsense. Let's hope the rest of the city follows suit.</content>

<content type="text">It's kinda foolish to think that just because the official event ends at 10:00 that the crowds are automatically going to disperse. There needs to be some kind of entertainment or activities for the crowds that aren't ready to go to the clubs or to head home. Live music---perhaps closer to downtown to give the Midtown residents a break from the noise---would be a good way to keep the crowds occupied instead of milling about looking for fights.</content>

<content type="text">Have people not learned anything for the overdevelpment Sacramento County did during the last decade? These types of proposals only hurt our environment and continue the trend of unsustainable development further into the county. This proposal, along with the Newbridge and Cordova Hills proposals will add 77,500 more homes that current projections say are needed. So why is this even up for discussion? Sacramento County needs to stand firm against these harmful proposals.</content>
