Conversation about: More women entering construction

"Today, women are majoring in construction administration, engineering and architecture in college so they can qualify for these and other high-paying construction-related jobs. It wasn't long ago that women weren't even accepted in such schools, said Lenore Janis, president of Professional Women in Construction..." BS - I'd like her to back that statement up - Give ANY examples where a woman was denied entry into a school because of her gender - give me a break.

“We’re at bare bones right now” You're joking right? You public leaches are bleeding tax payers dry with your $100-300K salaries and golden parchutes at 50 - This country has gone insane. "City Councilman Ray Tretheway indicated he may vote in favor of the ordinance later this month..." NO KIDDING? Tretheway hasn't seen a fee or tax he didn't love. Y'all shall reap what you sow

Conversation about: Iceland Celebrates 70th Birthday

I know of buildings, some built in the 1970's, that carry insurance, so age of the building is not an issue. There is no such thing as an occupied business, which is presumably safe, not being eligible for insurance; the issue is how much is the business willing to pay - or are they willing to assume all the risk. I suspect that there could have been other reasons for some insurances carriers to reject the policy, such as not having fire sprinkers or a working fire alarm system - not the age of the building per se. I will place a bet that the Kerths will try to get the taxpayers to pay for the reconstruction through the Redevelopment Agency.

Actually Mr. Burg, as a long time contractor/developer and a former building inspector - I strongly support governments role in ensuring that buidlings are built safely.

Great point - but they are concrete - hmm Kerth has applied for a permit to open an "outdoor" ice skating rink - which is still being reviewed - he DOES NOT have any permit to operate - I know the property was red tagged and deemed unsafe - a permit was issued to clean it up - There has apparently been NO engineering review, signed off by a licensed structural engineer, that says the walls are safe without any additional support measures. City building permits can be looked up online at: https://72.166.191.67/accela/velohall/index.cfm

Conversation about: COMMUNITY UPDATE FROM THE DESK OF "Superintendent Rock Star" JONATHAN P RAYMOND

Nice try, the Post is a Liberal rag, even further Left than Sac Press. "More emphasis on the whole child, physical education, the arts, fostering talents...Less emphasis on numeracy and literacy or testing" This is EXACTLY what the US does, and we can see the results - COMPLETE failure.

Gee Jonathan, how do other countries educate their children to a higher academic standard than the US at 1/10th the cost? Hint: they don’t use unionized teachers; they have very high demands of their children - no PC BS - no coddling. Maybe you should send a delegation to China and learn something.

UHAUL stock goes from 77 to 85 almost overnight. Time to flee California - let those with their hands out and illegal immigrants pay to support the public employee unions. ~Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap~

ah ha ha ha ha thats a good one - they deserve a jail cell for entering into our country illegally - and taking jobs from LEAGAL immigrants and citizens who WOULD do the same work - despite what the illegal alien lovers would have you believe.

Conversation about: District 5 candidate Jay Schenirer leads City Council race

Give me a break, anyone who knows Jay Schenirer knows he is anything BUT independent - He is just another voice for the developers on the Council - it's that simple. Sacramento deserves Schenirer and California deserves what is coming to it.

How about we just accept the reality of this City, it has some very serious problems and flaws - next step, do something about it. Having rivers, and trees and being in between Tahoe and San Francisco, does not make this a great city - having a well run city - with job opportunities and good schools does - this city has none of that.

Conversation about: Hyperlocal election coverage 2010

Of course it is, I know he is supporting Schenirer - so dont vote for him. but in all honesty - this a rumble between factions of the same party - the Democrats - one controlled by the developers, seemingly joined by the police and fire unions - and one controlled by the other public employee and trade unions - so in the end fiscal conservatism has no voice. The only bright point of this election locally will be if the Yes on B measure passes -

It's unfortunate that the tidal wave that is about to hit America will most likely not touch the unionist -neo-liberal enclave of Sacramento. This is a rather ironic since the national Tea Party movement started here in Sacramento; yet the leaders of that movement have ignored what is going on in their own backyards -

Well, If I worked for the State or local government, I'd be whistling Dixie! But lets extrapolate that thought - America, Love it or Leave it - huh?

Conversation about: THE CHALLENGE OF CRIME

Agreed, partially - Most of the time, with at-risk youth, their parents do not have the education or ability to raise children to be productive members of society - it's the ol' chicken or the egg question. And unless we are going to start forcing Americans to pass a test and get a license to procreate, there is little or nothing we can do to stop morons from producing little morons. At some point, there needs to be an avenue to step in and intervene, to break the cycle of anti-social moronicness.
