Conversation about: New Orleans fare coming to Broadway

Getting this great new unique business on the gateway of my neighborhood is awesome! When you get your meal here you are going to be engaged by the family of entrepreneurs eager to make this business a success. It's time to put your money where your mouths are! And considering this crowd, that's huge! Step out of comfort zone and check them out! Oh and GreenBreen, bring your EBT, no hard in trying...he?

This will be a great conversation at City Council this Tuesday. I'll be there with my Tweet on!

Conversation about: New businesses coming in 2012

Hmm it must be true that the city of restaurants stops at the freeway east and south. The rivers contain that vast economic growth at the north and west... fortunately... or there would be unbridled growth along the those "other" fallow commercial corridors... I'm going to wager 2012 will not only be easier to type but will demonstrate otherwise underestimated recognition of the rest of the city. I'll give you a hint in January. Happy New Year!

Does anyone care about the $10 per hen fee and a permit fee and the banding requirement and the no-free ranging / cage only aspects of this restrictive ordinance!? Not all "movement" is a forward motion. Read up while you get you check book out.

Cogmeyer- You read something in my comment during some repetitive apoplexy and call me out as patronizing? I would not attempt to mimic or steal that badge from you. Notice a fair and balanced narrative when you see it. Perhaps you'll stumble one out in the future.

Community assets - they are part of the whole 'entirety' - which makes the community complete. It sounds too simple but after a conversation with the Urban Land Institute economic development folks, a community without assets will tend to loose their identity, fail to attract future investments, and as the community matures fall into a blighted condition. Realize the neighborhoods adjacent to these assets are considered to be in a better state or condition than blocks further away from the assets sphere of influence. Look closely. The quality of life that exists is often not represent honestly in the media - other than the posts here by local journalists. Yet in the twenty years we have been here new-comers to my neighborhood have made decisions to relocate or invest because the the proximity and the hopeful expectations those area assets emote. You should come to the OPNA meetings and field those questions. Great questions to the dozens of neighbors who come to be part of the change, to share and re build Oak Park. You'll get the honest answers.

Great point. You should join and be vocal in public where we can look into the eyes of a bigot. Show up and show your true colors. I'll see if 200 of my closest friends can be there to support your freedom of speech. Have you pointed out the lack of tax contribution from the UCDHS? Too bad only several billions of dollars - byproduct or benefit - Lots of UCD students & employees live in Oak Park. Have you spent any time in North Oak Park ie med center - there is no neighborhood association. And has been one since Senator Ortiz moved to east sac years and years ago. Note: Check in our rights to participate in the process because we simply live in the United States! Via these rights you are tolerated much less encouraged to join in the discussion.

I'm pretty certain the folks voicing the opinions at city council aren't among the 'statistic' noted by jlxxx. They are not even the victims of those 'statistics'. I read your statement as contempt for the lower income, unemployed, perhaps even less fortunate in general. I have the stats to match your contemptuous summary for many neighborhoods within the city- perhaps your too if you happen to live in the city limits- that shows crime is down. Their is nothing in your little rip to support the breakup of our neighborhood and historic assets. You must have lost your place while blindly delivering the impassioned question regarding entitlements. Refer back to the article.

Conversation about: Redistricting: Where we are, how we got here

The redistricting concept is based on (elected) representation of one person, one vote. Changing boundaries of districts to achieve equal population among districts is the primary goal. Consideration should be given to topography, geography, cohesiveness, continuity, integrity and compactness of territory, community of interests, existing neighborhoods, and community boundaries. The notion is to keep communities, neighborhoods, and communities of interest intact, rather than the effect of diluting their presence. ie: A Oak Park and UCDavis Medical Center Campus

Conversation about: Proposed McDonald's draws criticism from some community members

Despite the inconvenient location to nearby residents, there are facts that attribute the lack accessibility to healthy food alternatives in low and moderate income residential areas to diabetes, high blood pressure, and the list... weigh in on the total tax/payroll benefits and the long-term health implications and the density aspect of land use. Weigh in - low income neighborhoods have issues with obesity closely related to the food source within proximity of their homes. Conversely Lots of great charity organizations are funded by these McD franchisees. 22 jobs in a low/moderate wage for youth/seniors could have life changing aspects. This debate is practically endless, but neighborhoods have the right to be heard when the planning dept is asked to move forward. Not only does Oak Park have an active group, the Building Healthy Communities project is an awesome resource for those seeking a resolution to all these and more issues. Join me at the next meeting....

Conversation about: Redistricting meeting sees new maps, accusations

All the while the business corridors are ignored as communities of interest - where the true economic engine meets the road. Drawing borders down the center of business corridors - fracturing occurs. Packing doesn't guarantee either outcome intended to protect when the voting demographic hardly reflects most vocal. Watch this motley crew of representatives posture as 2012 gets near. Yes - lines will be drawn.

It's always a great local event - with 8 to 10 groups just in and around the center of Oak Park - every year we engage more and more neighbors - Sr Barraza was among the volunteers to get the word out! Thanks for helping make it a success again!

Conversation about: South Stockton Business Walk

I walked with the many volunteers who came to the Stockton Corridor for the business walk! All the volunteers had simply a wonderful time with the many diverse and thriving businesses! We ate like Kings and Queens at the Saigon Bay restaurant - check them out! Ask for my special coffee desert - sweet decadence! And yes, learn this - hospitality abounds! Our international Marketplace is a great shopping destination!
