I am curious to know the ratio between those who are homeless and in need versus the availability of housing. I have been homeless a few times and lucky enough to have found housing. When I was in the River City Homeless program a number of years ago I lived there with other people who were mentally ill and many (not me ) had substance abuse issues as well. This program helped those who were willing to help themselves and others chose drugs and alcohol and the street instead. Not everyone is willing to help themselves but if one person is able to turn thier life around then it is worth helping people. You never know, the help you offer someone just might make a difference.

The program was called AB34 I believe...Senator Darrell Steinberg introduced the bill. i met with him. I do believe however that if this program helped one person to become self reliant and / or sober it is worth tax payers money. Afterall, you can't help those who don't help themselves and who don't take advantage of opportunites that may better their situation...But for those who benefited from the program such as you and I it was fortunate that the program existed otherwise I would have been on the street and who knows what would have happened to me. During the five months that I was in the program I started my own organization SHER Someone Hears Everybody's Rights...and began to write letters to government officials on ways to improve our mental health system. Well, one day I woke up only to find my typewriter, pens and paper thrown on the floor. I did not let this deter me because eleven years later I am still wriitng my letters. Don't let anything or anyone stand in your way of achieving your goals. By you writing this article you are helping many people!!

I can totally relate to this article. When i was homeless and living in a shelter or transitional housing there were only three of us who did not drink and/or do drugs. it was very uncomfortable and I tried to get back on my feet as soon as I could. This shelter housed people with a mental illness and/ or substance abuse issues. I was able to get an apartment after about five months but then soon after had a psychotic break and ended up in a psychiatric hospital...I am currently back in my own apartment and doing well...thank goodness. I am looking forward to your future articles, Sonny!

Thanks so much for your comment naga...I have really great friends who are keeping a watchful eye over me and my psychiatrist increased my medication which helps me to sleep. I slept for six straight hours last night...which is a good sign. I have had to help myself pretty much during the last twenty years of my mental illness and plan ahead when I see the warning signs. i have to be proactive and my friends tell me to watch my favorite movies and listen to my favorite songs and to try and relax. I try to use cognitive therapy on myself which means to change my way of thinking from unrealistic to rational. This is hard to do but I have done extensive research on cognitive therapy and so far it seems to be working. When i become psychotic it happens suddenly and even though I am not out of the woods yet...I am doing much better today. If you believe in a higher power maybe you can pray or send me positive thoughts. Just by you understanding and telling me I am in your thoughts warms my heart far more than you can imagine! Thank you!! Sher
