For those who enjoy wildlife and nature-related art, the Sierra 2 Center will be hosting an art show May 31 to celebrate local artists and raise awareness and funds for the Front Street Animal Shelter. Local artists including Hope Harris, Nikki Solone and Jennifer Foss, will be showing art inspired by their experiences with nature and wildlife, and guests will have a chance to win some of the art in a raffle and a silent auction during the event, according to a Monday press release. The event will be held 6 - 9 p.m. May 31 at the Sierra 2 Center, 2791 24th Street. Author Adrienne Pine will discuss the situation in Honduras since the 2009 coup through her book, "Working Hard, Drinking Hard: On Violence and Survival in Honduras" at Time Tested Books on Monday. A frequent traveler to the country, Pine will give Sacramentans insight into the situation as well as sign copies of her books. The event begins at 7 p.m. at Time Tested Books.
The River City Brewing Company's Friday Night Barbecue is back this week, with chef Ignacio "Nacho" Sanchez grilling meats and mingling with diners at the restaurant and brewpub located in Westfield Downtown Plaza. “Our head chef will be out there barbecuing oysters on the half shell, chicken and shrimp, and sometimes artichokes,” General Manager and co-owner Beth Ayres, 35, previously told The Sacramento Press. The barbecues are held from about 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. and are popular with the after-work crowd. Oysters run about $1.75 each, and two skewers of chicken – a couple bites each – cost $1, with two skewers of prawns available for $1.50. River City Brewing Company is located at 545 D
Friday marks the beginning of the 76th annual Sacramento County Fair, featuring everything from a carnival, local bands, hot rods and food trucks to a demolition derby and bull riding. Thirty fun and thrilling carnival rides will be located in the midway for those seeking a thrill, while livestock pavilions will showcase the best of what the county –long an agrcultural powerhouse – has to offer. Tickets are $5, with children 12 and under getting in for free. Parking is $10. Indulge in two of Argentina's most important exports – wine and tango – Saturday night in Folsom as Tango on the River takes a break from Old Sacramento while the Sacramento Music Festival is in town. An Evening of Wine and Tango is part of the regualrly scheduled fourth Saturday milonga – Uruguayan, Argentine and Southern Brazilian music – event. The event is open to the public, and entrance is $10. It will be held at Wine Gallery in Old Folsom, 627 Sutter Street and goes from & - 10:30 p.m.
