This is a film I've been looking forward to seeing. I was able to meet Conan for a couple of minutes when he was in Sacramento, by virtue of being there to photograph his meeting with KJ. A friend of mine from NY, who used to work with Conan, asked me how it went, telling me that Conan could often be less than nice. It sounds like the film backs that up, but those of us who are not celebrities will probably never know how difficult it is.

I enjoyed the show last night. Ms Rivers was equally offensive to everyone. If you don't like that, you had no business being there.
I now know the ASL sign for some very rude words.

At 77 Ms Rivers had a great deal of stamina and energy which flowed off the stage. I laughed until my sides hurt.

I could have done without people chatting and cell phone use through the show, and found them more offensive than Ms Rivers use of expletives. Even when someone asked them to keep the noise down, they took offense.
Manners make the man (or woman) clearly these individuals had no respect for the 20 or so people in surrounding seats and rows, nor for the performer. Rude.

Naturally everyone is bloody angry about this mortgage mess. But think about it for a minute -- you say you have a mortgage you can afford, a monthly payment that's probably about the same as what you would have to pay for an apartment if you do walk away from your house. Unless of course you are planning on living with your mother or something. While you make payments on your house, you are still building equity and the market will stabilize and you will end up ahead.
Still mortgage lenders are complete wankers, but I say don't walk away for spite. It could hurt you more in the long run than you think.

i wholeheartedly agree - if mortgage holders acted in their own best interests, just like any corporation or bank, we would walk away. (I'm in exactly the same boat you are. The biggest fear, for me, is the dent in my hard earned credit score.) There's a great WSJ article that mirrors your sentiments and offers some solid logic in support: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB126100260600594531.html

"Brent White, an associate law professor at the University of Arizona who has written about this issue, says homeowners should make the decision on whether to keep paying based on their own interests, "unclouded by unnecessary guilt or shame." He says borrowers can take a cue from lenders that "ruthlessly seek to maximize profits or minimize losses irrespective of concerns of morality or social responsibility."

Airline prices reflect other pricing dynamics in other industries - as fewer numbers of an available product exist and more people are competing or willing to pay more for it, the price increases. Thus, as a plane fills up and the departure date approaches, prices rise. If you have a full car lot you're more likely to discount the cars than if you have only one popular model left and people willing to pay full price. What is different and makes this dynamic seem odd, is that it's more open and obvious that the way prices change in most.many other industries, but it's not unique.

But the tax code is, and always will be, full of things that one person pays for that another uses. I don't have kids but I pay for others' child benefits and I pay in other ways for schools. But I also benefited from those things when I was a child and our (flawed though it might be) representative government has decided that we benefit as a group when those things are made available.

This is just one of 34 films over 3 days - and this was a documentary-heavy submission pool, so if you like these kinds of films, there are probably several more that you would find appealing. We have a full day of politics/peace/social justice content on Monday, in keeping with the nature of the holiday and the man it honors.

I certainly wasn't trying to hide this fact - in fact before reading this comment I had just mentioned that in answer to your previous comment. She's interviewed in the film but the content isn't about her or self-serving, in that it's not directing people to her company, she's merely describing how powerful the agency is. Whether or not she has any problems with her business (and I haven't followed her case at all, so I don't know the details - although we do have an assumption of innocence until proven guilty) doesn't negate the fact that she's clearly knowledgeable on this topic.

@Cogmeyer Earlier this week, I read the press release announcing the film's debut; the press release was very clear that the film was backed by Roni Deutch and produced by a Sacramento based production company called SIMZ Productions. Anyone looking up the film, viewing the website, etc. would very quickly come to know the film's background. Even with Roni's current situation, the film's subject matter is still very compelling.

You probably should disclose that the executive producer of this film is Roni Deutch, the Sacramento based "Tax Lady" who is facing some pretty serious allegations of fraud related to her tax advice business. Apparently she also makes an appearance in the film.

If disclosed upfront, this fact shouldn't dissuade someone from attending your film festival, and in fact it may still be a great film on an important and timely topic. But you never want people to feel like they have been "had" when they find out pertinent information like this after the fact.

These parasites, however, always seem to get a $1,000 to $3,000 refund courtesy of child credits and other "deductions" the government grants them. EVERYBODY needs to pay taxes - even a little - to make it work.

I'm a HUGE cynic/skeptic about stories like this but it's really pretty strange - they've been trying to find out what he's supposed to owe for years and they've never actually told him. However, he chose not to pay them throwing the producers of the show under the bus (i.e. he thought they paid them). As a tax professional, I have heard that excuse over and over. Bottom line: we are all responsible for paying taxes on income we make. If you have problems with the tax laws, write your congressman.
I really enjoyed District 9 -- there's so much substance there. It is a good story that is well-told and well-rendered on screen. I am looking forward to the sequel which is sure to follow.

One story line that interested me is how the human species is shown to be overly violent and concerned with weapons and their power. This trait was common to the scientists at MSU testing the alien weaponry, their brutal security force who lived by it and the Nigerians who took an ancient approach at acquiring the use of the alien technology. All levels of society demonstrated the violence trait, which I suspect will become a fatal flaw as the story unfolds...

Agreed - I also enjoyed Star Trek and thought it was well written, but I think District 9 is better Sci-Fi in the tradition of thought-provoking material. That said, I think that Star Trek as a larger set of work has a lot of interesting material also, but the new movie was mostly just a fun way to re-introduce the original cast of characters. My review for Star Trek is on here too: http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/7381/Review_Star_Trek

I found District 9 to be a really interesting film. The film's structure, a hybrid between documentary and narrative cinema, beautifully complements the thought-provoking story. I also very much enjoyed Star Trek, but for entirely different reasons. One film is and gruesome and socially challenging, while the other is a well-made escapist adventure.

I can see an image in my mind of the smoke seeping in slowly near the screen.
I really like your observation about the Bill Hader character, I think it's very astute. I think I probably liked the movie more than you, but for me it is at least in part because of the the familiarity (having worked all manner of menial jobs, including my favorite, landscaping Taco Bells with immigrant laborers).

I also appreciated the lack of cliches in the movie and the subtlety by which the main character recognizes the faults in other characters. For instance when he realizes at the end who the Ryan Reynolds character really is. There isn't a big argument, just a subtle recognition.

I did like the fact that the main character makes it to NYC in the end, but I think it might have ended nicely in the street. Although as my girlfriend points out, a lot of movies end that way.

Great review, keep them coming (I also love your tags, very appropriate).

Well, it was subtle up until that point. I know that there had been discussions about releasing a print version before the Sac Press launched, so I wasn't surprised by the headline. I figured that with the Bee on the verge of collapsing, maybe the Sac Press was making a land grab for its readers. For a brief moment, synapses fired, worlds collided, and there existed, in my mind's eye, a pristine copy of the first edition of Sacramento Press "Print Edition". But then I read "wildly successful" and I realized it was an April Fool's joke.

Probably better that way...

I don't know, this sounds kinda sketchy (not to draw this out). This is a funny piece (funny hah hah, and ok, a little funny weird) and it raises hopes (not too much) that this could be come a regular (no bowel jokes) fixture (no pun intended) of our local cultural (such as it is) scene (not that old defunct Bee section, but something more zeitgeisty).
Know what I mean (as the rappers say, or do they anymore?)?
And Tony, when is YOUR set at the All-Sketch?

I find that I have become a resident in Dan's camp. I monitor the friends request (Hi Colleen), friend suggestions, events/calendar/reminders and I'm a sucker for movie triva and those ridiculous quizzes.

Other than that I ignore 90% of the apps because it can suck you into the darkness.
I just don't have that kind of time - - and I'm unemployed! LOL
