Every single newer tall building in Sacto is 100 to 300 feet too short. Many of them were originally planned to be taller, but were shortened by some city ordinance quirk. Build taller.

Again, the numbers don't add up. As before, when the report came out on the 3.1 mil visitors, that would be a best case scenerio. Realistically, the number will be more like 1.8 mil visitors. I personally get fed up this "could" crap all of the time, and yes it could, but most likely would not. A project this size I would fully expect a 3/4 bil dollar per year impact, not a could. If the powers that may be cannot show us more concrete evidence of the revenue this project will project, then it's a white elephant. It will become just another publically subsidized entity. I will continue to expound the value of having an arena in the community, but please give us the straight scoop.

So do I see light rail extention getting built several blocks away? How does any of this tie together in a whole transportation scheme? Or is it just that, as scheme?

Here's my idea for free. Take up SoCal on their idea to secede. Take up the State of Jefferson to become their own state. Take up Tahoe on their break away idea. Combine LA/Frisco to create their own coastal state. That would leave Sacto with a much smaller state government, which would mean that any state building on the Mall would be torn down & turned over into parkland, or designed into free enterprising business'. Remaining state services would be consolodated into the East End buildings. State legislators would become per diem, NO salaries or entitlements as they would become servants of the public & not career, & will show up to do their work for the people every other year as it should be. Then & only then shall the Capitol Mall become a place of beauty.

I would expect as much, maybe even more. 3.1mil visitors per year, to me, should equate to $300mil the first year only to go up thru the subsequent 29 years. My theories doubt that 3.1 visitor number. If the NBA occupant would sell fully out for a season, you are looking at 800k visitors. AND if the promoters of other events could luckily get 40-50 more events to sellout, that would be maybe another 800k, perhaps 1mil, just barely half of the 3.1mil drabble that is being shoved at us. I think the 1.6 to 1.8mil numbers are the working numbers that should be looked at for the feasibiltiy of this giant box, then everything else would be gravy. Any time you look at the best case numbers such as the 3.1mil, you are looking at a financial disaster.

It was very fortunate that parking limit was raised from 1 1/2 hr to 2 hr a few years ago as 1 1/2 was never enough time to eat a good sit down meal in Old Sac. Parking is a bit different down there as it is enforced everyday, & enforced until 8PM, time to catch the dinner crowd. Parking is a cash cow for Sac & so is writing tickets. I have witnessed swarms of enforcement on occasions particularily at 10AM enforcement start time & 6PM when other areas of downtown have their stop enforcement time. With the speed that the enforcement can write a ticket, you can easily be written up for a violation in the time it takes you to go to the change machine & back. No recourse once that ticket is written but to pay the ticket with a protest letter in hopes that the ticket will be reversed.

Again, Sacto is displaying a severe "short" sightedness. I know that the big excuse may be the economy, but our leaders continue to pursue this cowtown mentallity & not promoting tall. Sac city/county leaders have allowed sprawl far & wide over our valuable farm land. They have allowed suburban slums to develop thu haphazard planning. The feds contributed by allowing lenders criminally lax loan approval requirement. Now, I'm all in favor of making improvements in the areas that need it. I'm all in favor of development that incorporates old with new. But, these projects need to be taller. By putting a lowrise project on these valuable downtown parcels will keep a highrise structure, a structure that would service more people per parcel of land, off of that land for the next 100 years & keeping Sacto to continue its urban sprawl out into farmland.

Why doesn't City of Sac bottle their own water and market it to offset funding shortfalls?

Build it. Get the commitment for the whole project. Do NOT phase it. Increase retail to 70,000 SF. Increase access to/from nearby neighborhoods with ped crossings. I know Calif construction cost are insanely high, but figure how to keep costs down so that the area is middle class affordable, not just upper class.

Is there anyone out there who thinks that the NCAA might have been "asked" not to hold any part of March Madness at Arco anymore just so us locals can get all worked up about a new arena again? If ARCO is in such "bad shape," don't you think that the building would be shut down for safety reasons? Yes, I am fully aware that ARCO is a rather old structure in todays NBA, and a new structure should be considered sometime in the near future. And, no I don't think that the Maloofs should build their own arena, even though they could, but more participation by them tenant improvements would help. Having an arena, an NBA franchise, and the numerous other events an arena attracts is a win for the entire community. Yes, I like having the Kings in town. I like having March Madness, concerts, monster trucks, all-star wrestling. But to have the threat of the Kings moving, or deliberately tearing down the team so that the community quits coming to the games, or have the NCAA publically announce that ARCO is so bad that other venues may consider not holding events there just doesn't work. If I were the Maloofs, the City of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson, I would be down the NCAA's throats after that statement they made, unless of course that was exactly what everyone wanted the NCAA to say.

Too bad. St Rose of Lima was about the only "Currier & Ives" type location downtown can offer. Any other sites would not have the romance nor the practical location for mall shoppers.

My wife and I were married (still are) at the mansion in 1983. The wedding party men wore river boat tail coats with top hats (similar to photo above), the ladies wore turn of the century dresses. Was a lot of fun.

But, somehow Sacramento likes the sprawl as evident of their lack of highrise office buildings. There shouldn't be a single state office building under 300' tall. Should never be non manufacturing business' in lowrise.
