Have you guys not visited old soul on Broadway and 35th. It is not far from this BBQ place and there is all sorts of people going to this coffee shop at all hours of the day and evening. North oak park is a pretty ok place to be. It can only get better if the support is there.

Can I just say that they are truly beating out the competition. I was a tiny bit disappointed when I was holiday shopping at boutiques around the city and didn't exactly find the freshness I was looking for. My last stop was lucky lefty's and it was the highlight of my night. Brennan made me a super deal and was very nice. Ok I think I just wrote a yelp review 5 stars!

You may know 5th Ave from the Neighborhood Watch collective (State Cap, Dahlak, Random Abiladeze) or from seeing one of his live shows at Press Club, Second Saturday, or at Empire. His latest album No More Heroes was released in mid-July as part of his new group Delorean. Jon Reyes produced the album and is the other half of the group.

No More Heroes offers a heavy blend of hi-fi and hip hop blends, with some funk and unusual samples. One of the standout tracks is "Chillin" featuring C-Plus and Dahlak, who are also local emcees. In the song they trade verses over a cow-bell-heavy beat.

Another stand out track "My Most Favorite Emcee" is inspired by Kanye West's "Street Lights" but does away with all the auto tune and features much more passion. The track "Look Alice" recently received air play on 103.5 The Bomb, and has a catchy hook asking "How deep does the rabbit hole go?"

The EP is a departure from his usual style, the production value sounds better than on his previous material. You can hear his determination on the track "Chapter Seven" where he illustrates the everyday struggles of an aspiring artist in a relatable way: "I worked Christmas day just to get it, to go ahead and handle my business"

Overall No More Heroes delivers a refreshing dose of new era hip hop and looks like a preview for even more innovative projects in the future. Delorean is constantly doing live performances, you can catch him at the Blue Lamp this Friday performing with Another Rap Group, Breeze, Abstract Rude and Busdriver.

For more information on the show, visit Themashup.net

Im so upset I forgot about this. I went two years ago to empire comics on arden and got some good stuff, you should try going there because they had boxes of free comic books and you could take as many as you like. I don't like how that store on fruitridge doesn't let you read the comic books you just have to pick/buy one based on its cover and hope the artwork and story line is consistent.

With Cinco de Mayo around the corner, watching a Mexican folkloric
ballet performance might be the perfect pre-fiesta event with its
detailed costumes, complex dances and loud mariachi music -- all on
one stage.

The group Raices de mi Tierra has been around since 1995, and performs
traditional Mexican folk dance. This year is their 14th annual show.
The focus of the show is migration stories.

Highlighted in this show will be stories of migration journeys told
through a variety of dances. Although all the dancers originate from
the country of Mexico, each group involved is from a different Mexican
state and will showcase the vast amount of diversity in their songs,
style of dance, and wardrobe.

The group interprets how dance has always been involved
in Mexico's history. Many regions are influenced by other countries,
like Germany and Poland, whose people have settled in Mexico. The
Mexican people have adopted the cultures and incorporated them into
things like dancing. One of the dances has a polka
influence and another has a Caribbean influence.

Raices de mi Tierra puts on this event every year to celebrate the
culture and history of Mexico. A two-year member of the group, Laurie
Perry-McCord, is of European heritage but enjoys learning about the
culture and thinks it is important to learn about other arts in the world.

"It’s about keeping the heritage and culture alive through all the
unique dance styles that are available," she said.

There will be a special performance from movemento ballet latino which
fuses classical dancing and traditional Latino dance music. A champion
trick roper Esteban Escobedo will be included in this show and will
use a lasso in dynamic ways, making acrobatic moves with his body
and lasso.

If you catch the matinee performance you will get to see a very
special folkloric ballet performance by the Sacramento Language
Academy, a two-way Spanish immersion charter school located in south
Sacramento. Raices has provided dance instructors for them in the past
and works closely with them. A portion of the proceeds for the ticket
sales of the matinee will go to the school.

There will also be a V.I.P gala show at 6 p.m. where people can get a
glimpse of what the performers do outside of dance, as some of
them will showcase artwork and sing live. The gala will have
different dance costumes on display from different regions and they
are going to have a member of the Latino caucus to speak about
immigration issues as well.

This event takes place on May 2 at the Benvenuti Performing Arts
Center at 7:30 p.m. and the matinee is at 3:00 p.m.

While some bicyclists seek the thrill of speed, it’s not for everyone, and a new group in Sacramento caters to those who would rather take a leisurely ride and enjoy the scenery. Sacramento Slow Riders is offering a group ride at your own pace. Every second and fourth Saturday of the month, anyone who is a kid, adult, senior and everything in between can take advantage of these bimonthly meetings.

Starting Saturday, April 11, riders will meet at the bike kitchen at 10 a.m. The routes include Downtown, Midtown, East Sac and Sacramento's bike trail. Typically, the rides will go for an hour, and the length of the ride is about four miles. This Saturday will be more of a Midtown route just to start things off. The goal of the group is to ride bicycles, see some sights, exercise and have a good time.

This club was started by Midtown resident and bicycle enthusiast Tom Brown. The idea for the Slow Riders club came from a group he knew about in Lake Tahoe called the Slow Cruisers that did something similar. Brown noticed that there are many experienced bicyclists with cycling jerseys and all the fancy gear in Sacramento. He wanted to create a group that perhaps did not have all the gear and that did not have to go for long-distance rides.

"There are mainly only bike groups that go for 20 to 100 miles at one time, and you have to be in good shape to keep up with them," Brown said. "I am a senior, and I cannot keep up with them, so I decided to get people together who just want to ride at a normal pace."

Brown said he hopes that this group will lead to other group activities like a bicycle scavenger hunt or an after-ride picnic. Also, Brown wants riders to know they are riding at their own risk. Brown checked with the California Highway Patrol, and he learned that group rides are legal as long as all bike laws are followed.

When they go on the Sacramento trail by the river, Brown hopes it will draw in those who may not feel safe riding alone on those trails. This event is completely free, and there will be no rides on rainy days, or days when rain is forecast.

Velvet Leaf clothing uses beautiful silks, has edgy designs and a line of highly fashionable dresses. Looking at the clothes doesn’t lend the eye to the fact that they are all 100 percent organic. Becky 24, and Laura Carter 22, respectively, are the eco-friendly creators behind Velvet Leaf clothing. This high-end organic brand with fashion forward designs opened the doors of its first Velvet Leaf boutique between H and 11th streets in Sacramento.

Early on they got the necessary press that they believe contributed to their success, Teen Vogue magazine did an article on them and that slowly got them more press. They recently did a fashion show in Los Angeles called Gen Art where the hottest up and coming labels get sponsored to be a part of the show and was hosted by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Many celebrities attended and it took place during Los Angeles fashion week. Even with a taste of fashion stardom the girls still value the importance of making clothes for love the most.

These Placerville natives learned early in life about eating organic vegetables from their vegetarian father and learned to care for earth in general from their family. It influenced them to live in a green manner and ultimately, the idea of creating sustainable clothes. Laura Carter went to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles for a quarter and then realized that the things they were teaching could be self taught for a cheaper price. The sisters already had sewing experience and often bought sewing books from thrift stores.

In 2005 they started Velvet Leaf and had their first collection for spring/summer of 2006. At first they sent their designs to be manufactured in India. They actually visited the factory where the clothing would be produced to make sure that it was fair labor and that the factory itself was as sustainable as possible.

Recently they decided to bring back the production to the U.S. "It’s tough when you want to be a sustainable company, because when you look at the full word ‘sustainability,’ it also has a lot to do with being local. We were getting the highest certified organic material but we were overseas and that was not helping our economy," said Becky Carter.

While they were still living in Los Angeles, they toured great factories in the country and realized that it was very expensive. After moving to Sacramento they decided to try and manufacture their own clothes. They settled into their current location, bought sewing machines and hired sewers and have since made all of their clothes.

When they decided on their location they thought about Placerville at first, but liked that Sacramento has a unique group of young people that their designs could appeal to. Velvet Leaf is the first all organic clothing boutique in the city.

Both sisters enjoy the sincere vibe Sacramento offers. "We’re just small town girls and when you’re in a big city like Los Angeles it is hard to find genuine people and there [are] real people here in Sacramento. Ultimately, this is where we want to be," Becky Carter said.

Their latest spring summer collection is new and different for them and includes high ended hand woven silks from Cambodia. The theme was geometric revolution. They took basic shapes and forms and added primary colors. The sisters describe it as a bit of an 80's and modern vibe with a vintage twist.

Soon they would like to expand Velvet leaf to include lingerie and bedding and make it a lifestyle store. They would also eventually like to become more affordable: as the materials are growing in popularity, the price of fabric is gradually dropping.

To view their collection visit shopvelvetleaf.com

Take a walk around midtown and it won’t be long before you realize that Sacramento has a wealth of hair salons. Trendy, fancy, casual, fun salons -- it's clear that we live in a city that cares a great deal about its hair.

Spring brings many new hair trends, and the Sacramento Press checked into a few salons to see what's new, what's next and what's hot.

The economy hasn't had too much of a negative impact on salon owners, apparently. Many of them said that business has never been better.

“Last year was one of our best years,” said Keri Carr, the owner of Honey Salon. The economy has had an effect on the styles that woman have chosen for spring. The boho/hippie look is popular and women have been going back to more natural colors such as browns and reds. By eliminating highlights and bleaching, the upkeep is cheaper and frequent trips to the salon aren't necessary.

Also last year's popular bubble bob is no longer the "it" thing. Women are looking for a more sun-kissed, day-at-the-beach look, with longer, flowing hair. This look also saves money because women don't have to keep coming back for a cut to keep the shape of the bob.

According to Gigi Bui, a stylist at Deeda Salon, “A lot of clients are waiting ten to twelve weeks or longer instead of six to eight, as well as alternating their cut and color.”

What was the verdict on men's hair? Men seem to be taking a chance this season with color and letting their hair grow out a lot more. Shannon Marlin who owns Lush and Spanish Fly, said color has rarely been seen in the past. “Men have been getting some color or highlights, that’s different,” she said.

According to Chelsea Lyons of Midtown Mosaic salon, “A lot of the women that have come in want to go lighter, not like platinum blonde but like a Jennifer Aniston look.” Magic Salon, which has the most reviews on yelp.com, is starting something new next month: recession Wednesdays for people that are having a hard time. Magic is cutting down prices the first Wednesday of the month for people that can’t afford regular prices. Stylist Justine Harrod said, “We are doing our part in helping people afford to be able to still come to a salon.”

Luxe Salon also has a special, check out the article here. This offer may be just what you need to keep your spring style fresh while you're walking the streets of the city but still trying to save some money. There are so many salons to choose from and styles to enjoy -- what will you choose this season?

Local musicians get their own awards every year from the Sacramento News & Review. For a lot of them, it is quite the honor to be nominated and even more exciting to win. On Wednesday, March 25 at the Press Club, The Sacramento News and Review hosted a Sammie Nominees’ party, which included live performances from T.O.P. (The Other Poets), Citystate with Bones and Live Manikins.

At about 10 p.m. a crowd of about 70 people gathered at the small stage of the Press Club to watch DJ/Producer Citystate play his latest productions. While newcomer emcee Bones waited for his part to come, he kept the crowed entertained with random dancing and jokes. After being a longtime producer and selling beats, Bones finally decided to buy recording equipment and formally start his rapping career. Bones has currently performed at casual talent shows. Although he last performed at a step show at Raley Field, he was more than happy to be performing at the Press Club as he announced to the crowd, "It's an honor to be performing at the Press Club right now!" The Clarity and appealing flow that Bones provided was tantalizing to see on top of the hip hop electro blend of Citystate.

"I've voted for the awards in the past, and it hadn't been on my radar until last night, I started to think maybe I can shoot for that next time around," said Bones, who is now filling a spot for a member of the Addict Merchants, a hip-hop group with a long history in Sacramento.

Next was the hip-hop group Live Manikins – former Sammie nominees who provided the crowd with the old-school hip-hop feel. They worked the crowd, which was very involved and enthusiastic.

They took a pause so one of the members, Mr. Linguistics, could do a verse or freestyle without the music as he preached about the ignorance of those who listen to mainstream hip-hop.

"We had Masta Ace, you grew up on Master P, we had Chuck D, you know Flavor of Love but don't know about Public Enemy." The crowd went wild, and as their set ended, the official list of Sammie Nominees was posted up all over the club walls.

As that was much of the reason people showed up, by the time T.O.P., also a hip-hop group, got on stage, the crowd became a bit smaller. Random Abiladeze, a nominee in the group, started out by saying, "I want to thank everybody who came for the music first and didn't just leave when they didn't see their name on the list…Can someone just go tell the people outside to come on in?" The slightly reduced crowd still bobbed their heads and put a hand or two up as the rap duo displayed their quick flow over heavy jazz-influenced beats, rhyming about their truth and vision.

This year, things were different in that the SN&R had online voting by fans to determine the nominees, which made some attendees upset.

"I think this list is biased and a popularity contest, what's popular isn't always quality," said Justin Thyme a fan who came out to see T.O.P. Others were fine with the idea.

"Everyone on this list, even though I don't know them personally, I know has worked hard all year, so they deserve it," said Billy Hi-life, a local producer and bass player.

Nominees will be listed in print in the April 2 issue of the Sacramento News & Review. Sammie showcases will take place in May and June, eventually leading to the award show on June 27 at Cesar Chavez Park.

Jab left jab right, swing and hook. Get low, bob, weave, and I'm dizzy. I look up and my partner tells me to keep going.

I can barely gather up enough strength to put my hands back up, but I find it, somehow. I lift the 16oz gloves on my hands and start the punch combination over again. I'm dripping sweat like it was pouring rain on my face, and I’m not sure I’ll make it to the next class. Who knew boxing was so intense?

When I first signed up for beginning boxing at Sacramento City College I knew there would be challenges, but I never thought that when I unwrapped my hands after class they would be shaking. Glancing at the stairs, I wonder how I will walk down them with my legs hurting like they do.

Before we got to the light sparring, I was able to hold my own. But the actual combat has been a challenge, to say the least. The drill consists of half of the class being in an inner circle that doesn't move and the other half in an outer circle that moves clockwise, every time meeting a new opponent.

There are five women in the class, including me. For the first time, the instructor told us that males and females can take jabs at each other. Most of the men in this class are over 5 feet 6 inches, and I don't know how my 5-foot-2-inch self will ever reach them with my short arms. My height and my nerves make it hard for me to focus on correctly following through with my punches.

When I return to my regular partner, who is a guy only an inch or two taller than me, I feel more at ease. He’s been encouraging, helping and supporting me through the class so far. He knows my strengths and weaknesses and with him, I feel comfortable and motivated.

I start with my regular jabs, and then I surprise him with the hook. I land it! Still in good spirits, my partner rushes me like me a football player as I uppercut his sides. The instructor blows the whistle and my partner smiles at me with approval as he says, "You did really good. You have the strength - don't forget that."

I hear him, but I don't believe him, and the next person I have to face isn’t a believer either. Most of the men in the class are supportive and will stop and correct me if I make a mistake, but there are others who aren’t as supportive, like my next opponent.

He stands well over 6 feet tall and looks bored at the thought of having to spar me, but I try to stay motivated, and I give it whatever energy I have. I land the uppercut to the side of his tall body, and just as I celebrate, I let my guard down and “Pop!” he lands one on my eye.

Thank goodness he is not giving 100 percent, rather 40, but there’s still a quick sting of pain. I am mostly shocked, as this is the first time anyone has punched me who wasn't my sister.

I collect myself. I think to myself, “This is a boxing class. This is what is supposed to happen.” I wait for the next person to face me.

This time it’s a woman, and we’re about the same height, but she has an athletic build and she is wearing her softball shirt from high school. I haven't really seen her in action before, but I am about to find out what she’s made of.
The whistle blows and I have the feeling that she is going easy because I am throwing punches unsuccessfully and her response is delayed. I keep going, and then I find out her response is to throw the fastest jab combinations I’ve ever received. That was a surprise. She landed a bunch of punches on my face and my stomach.

At this point, my confidence has completely deflated. I’m disappointed that the sport that I’d waited so long to try out for didn’t turn out to be something I instantly excelled at, as I had fantasized.

Maybe I should have pushed a little harder when we ran up and down the stadium stairs or jumped rop the whole time instead of stopping early? Do I give up because I am now afraid of what will happen toward the end of the semester, as the class becomes even more intense? I fear that I’ll get my nose broken and have two black eyes that will make me look like a raccoon.

Time’s up and class is over. I slowly walk to my backpack and drink from my water bottle. The instructor walks by and says "Not bad," I hear some of other guys tell me I've improved.

I’m dead tired and I debate whether to make this my last class. I get up and realize that I had the stamina to punch the padded wall for another half hour.

I can't leave this! I’ve grown to love boxing, and it has given me a feeling I’ve never felt before. None of the other sports I have failed at have made me feel like this. There’s something about boxing.

Whether I become better or come out with a bloody nose and lumpy face, I’m happy to say that I’ve found something that makes me feel I was made to do this.

Hank Campbell had no journalism or media experience, but he is now the founder of scientificblogging.com. – a science website, not a blog, that gets a million readers a month and has articles written by Nobel Prize winners, professors and science authors. Based out of Folsom Campbell, a business man, saw the potential in a website like this and started it just as something he knew he would enjoy reading.

"I didn't know enough to know that I didn't know what I was doing," he said "The site took off in a way I hadn't expected."

In two years it has gone from being an unknown science site to being on the top-25 scientific publications list.
Getting started took Campbell looking up the top six scientists in different science areas including; physical, earth, life and medicine and simply calling them up. He explained the concept behind the site and let them know he was not backed by a major media company. All of the scientists were on board and pleased with the idea that it was not a typical science publication.

The site offers ideological free news straight from the scientists and influences people who may be trying to make a decision on topics like global warming or stem cell research. The scientists who write for scientificblogging.com have data to back up their content. Campbell said he likes to think he is taking out the middle man by providing direct scientific knowledge to the reader without a publication name brand coming in between the facts.

As the site grew bigger, it got an excellent response from the readers and the contributing writers. Campbell soon added community features such as commenting on articles, instant messaging and member profiles. Still, operators haven't spent any money on formal marketing, and Campbell quickly realized that large media companies’ reaction was to imitate his site. "A lot of them have tried to do the same thing now, but they don't have the same enthusiasm. They wanna knock you down so you cant get big," Campbell said.

Although he knows that it will be tough competing with publications that have been around for long and that are in print, Campbell is confident that his website will continue to be successful. Knowing that his website doesn't have to panic about things like money and advertisements, he can purely focus on content. Contributing writers are always willing to talk to readers and explain anything science related. Anyone can leave a comment about the articles and start a conversations without being a member.

In the beginning, there were not any resources – he funded it himself and had enough programming experience to build the site without investors or venture capital. Now scientificblogging.com is on the list of top 25 science publications in existence. "I knew it would be a while before people found us, now if you Google world’s best scientists, were going to be right there at the top. We literally have the best scientists."

Anne Shulock will join 69 other artists, completing one piece of art every day for 50 days in the third annual 50/50 show hosted by the 20th Street Gallery. She has been working on a painting a day for the past 43 days.

Although it has not always been easy, she enjoys the process and is excited for the outcome.

Shulock got started in art when her parents set a rule that for every sport she took up she had to pick up an instrument. The piano and violin were not things she felt she excelled at, so in the seventh grade she decided to give art a try.

As she went through school she experimented with different styles. There was even a time in her life where she could tell that her art was going through a Picasso phase.

"I remember I used to draw weird things with lots of eyes in weird places," she said.

After high school, Shulock went through a media studies program at Pomona College where she dabbled in video, art and writing. After college, she was still looking for a way to get back into art and had gone to the 50/50 art show last year and decided that this year she would apply to do the show. She sent in some of her sample work and was chosen.

Now, in a small space by her kitchen, she works on a 6X6 panel every night with oil paints. It has been challenging working a full-time job and finding time to work on the paintings, but she still finds herself giving the paintings all her effort and a minimum of three hours per night.

"I went to visit a friend in San Francisco, and she asked me to stay for dinner and a movie, and I couldn't. I had to go back to doing my paintings," she said.

All the artists' paintings have to have one common theme. Shulock chose book covers because she loves books and knew that this would be a subject that would keep her attention for 50 days. Her paintings are her own interpretation of her favorite book covers and will be sold between $80 and $100.

This is the biggest show for 20th Street Gallery, which last year sold 800 pieces. Organizers said they believe it’s an art show that benefits everyone.

"It's good for the artist because they get a lot of exposure, and they sell a lot of their art. It's good for the buyer because they get exposed to new artists and they can afford to buy several pieces – not just one," said Teri Marquat, manager of 20th Street Gallery, "and it's good for the gallery because with 73 artists in the show, they bring in a lot of new people who haven't been to the gallery, and they often return."

After she completes the 50/50 art show, Shulock plans on painting something on a larger scale, as she feels confined by the small canvases she has been painting. If the show goes well, she will work more on building a portfolio to show to galleries and develop her true style.

"I am not going to change the face of modern art," Shulock said, "but it will always be a part of my life, and I'm think I'm good at it."

The 50/50 art show will hold its opening reception Wednesday, April 8, at the 20th Street Art gallery and ends on Saturday, May 30.

The galleries hours are, Wednesday through Friday 12-5 p.m. at 911 20th St.

Fashion, music, art, Hipsters, hip hop-heads, well-dressed moms with their kids…Where can you find all this? Sacramento's very own MOD ’09, an electrifying fashion event that brought all kinds of people together.

On the night of Saturday, March 7th, at the artisan building in north Sacramento hundreds of people came to support Sacramento's finest boutiques and designers.

Movement of Design was organized by a large group of people that included boutique owners, designers and artists. Among those in the group was Paul Bricuela the owner of United State Boutique, Bricuela worked hard to get the music together and worked with designer Michael Hargis to fuse things together.

"We basically wanted to build this synergy of art, fashion boutiques, have some vendors plus a music event,” Bricuela said. “There wasn't really anything going on beside the sell-out buy-out event."

A trunk showroom where about 15 boutiques and designers set up clothes and accessories to sell was busy all night. One of the designers was Donald Ambroziak, who for the first time ever sold his screen print shirts and walked away surprisingly happy. For the low price of $5 he almost sold out, leaving with only four shirts. Not only did Ambroziak do so well in sales, but it also allowed him to network with already-established boutiques that have requested to sell his T-shirts.

"I didn’t really think this through,” Ambroziak said with a smile. “I just did it for fun. This night turned out so much better than I expected.".

Other Midtown favorites such as French Cuffs, Buff Castle, Artifacts and Faedrah clothing all had booths. This was much needed in a time when boutiques are suffering from the economic state.

The art in the gallery by Julie Baker could not have been more fitting, with all soft fashion inspired pieces, including a mini dresses made of paper towels. This room was also never empty, and people were left in awe after viewing Baker’s art.

Upon walking in, the lounge area had a DJ spinning dance hits. The cafe was selling food and drinks, including fine pastries and coffee blended drinks, alcohol was served to those 21 and older. Still, this event was family–friendly, and visitors saw a good handful of children with their parents in their most stylish outfits.

The fashion show was packed and quite possibly the highlight of the night for many. The spacious theater room turned into a runway, and the band New Humans played live as Atelier and Van Der Neer displayed their vintage and unique designs. This alone created an atmosphere that could only exist in Sacramento. After a full set by the band, singer Melee Beats, who was reminiscent of Robin Thicke, started things off for Havoc boutique. United State followed. They both had independent urban designs being modeled by women and men with a lot personality. At the end of the show, free T-shirts were thrown into the crowd, and the DJ played music for dancing.

With so many DJs, including Rock Bottom, The Robot&JJ and Greg G, people stayed to dance and enjoy themselves. Bows and Arrows dropped off free sunglasses while supplies lasted. MOD ’09 was a successful event that differentiated Sacramento’s fashion scene from any other city. That is how MOD attendee Nick Stephenson, who attended the event to support Havoc boutique, said he feels.

"I like the fact that when I shop here, I know it’s less likely that I'll see someone wearing the same shirt as me,” Stephenson said. “It'd be very sad if these boutiques closed, because then more people would walk around dressed the same."

At about 8:15 p.m. Friday night, to my surprise, I walked into a very empty Empire night club. I was feeling completely lost and confused, when suddenly two people walked in and asked the lady with the clipboard, "Are we in the right place for the casting call?"

Sure enough I was right where I was supposed to be to try out for Paris Hilton's "My New B.F.F." The line was not out the door, I was actually the first one there.

I sat down, got an application and filled it out while sitting on a big white couch. Some of the questions included, "What's your idea of a fabulous night out? What would your friends say are your best qualities? What's your typical day like?"

Although the questions seemed simple and straightforward, it became very clear that they were looking for a lot more than just my best qualities. In fact I soon realized that what they really wanted to know were my worst qualities.

A slim, well dressed, dark haired man came over and took the three applications - mine, the guy's and the girl's that came in right after me.

I have to admit that I got a cold feeling from the man doing the interviews. "OK, let's get started," he said as he looked at each of us.

The lovely brunette girl with a great smile, boots and a sweater dress started talking, "Well, my name is Sonya and I am a club promoter..." The story went on - she got about three hours of sleep per day during the summer, she liked wild parties and hooking up with grunge rocker guys. I couldn't say that my lifestyle came anywhere near her typical activities, even on my best days.

At that point I thought to myself, "What is a tea-drinking, hip hop listening, lots-of-sleep-getting girl like me doing here?" I have plenty of admiration for the heiress, I would honestly be excited to meet her. Still, I had to admit that while I sat there listening to the flamboyant guy talk about his wild adventures in LA, that there was no place for a self-conscious, almost plus-size-wearing girl like myself. At least not with Ms.Hilton and definitely not in Hollywood.

It was my turn. "I bet your life sounds really boring compared to theirs," the man with the clipboard said with a laugh.

Indeed, it was boring, the peace I get from drinking tea at Hina's, the thrill of watching my favorite local emcees, the excitement I feel when I see a new boutique open in Midtown - that's who I am, but unfortunately, the producer for MTV was not looking for this girl.

The only reaction that I got from the producer was when I made a joke: "I want to be Paris Hilton's friend because we could be like Rob and Big and always go on adventures!" Everyone laughed.

The producer told us that they would review our applications, and that if they liked us, they would call us back. The next step would be to make a video of ourselves, and upon viewing that, they would decide if you were right for the show.

As I put my coat on and grabbed my purse glancing around at the still, nearly empty club, I was content knowing that I did not have an exciting, thrilling, made-for-television kind of life.

Do you remember the goofy kid in your class? What if that goofy kid turned out to be a rapper on the rise? That is exactly what happened to Ruthless Records recording artist, Hopsin.

Wednesday, Feb. 25th, Hopsin will be in Sacramento performing with hip hop veteran Kool Kieth.

A one-time aspiring actor, Hopsin discovered that music was his natural calling in 2001. He used to put acting before music, but when he read for parts, he couldn't always remember his lines. It was then he realized that music was his passion.

Unsatisfied with the current state of the hip hop game, Hopsin is trying to break out of the routine formulated rapper. He does not boast about being a tough or dangerous guy.

"I don't fake, I tell the truth to the fullest, everything I say is a real- life situation," he said.

Starting out in high school, Hopsin always made his own beats on a program called Fruity Loops, and continues to make his own music still to this day. Although he wouldn't mind working with other producers in the future, for now he is content with his own production skills.

His current single, "Pans in the Kitchen," is funky and different. Making the video for that single is one of his most exciting moments so far.

"It boggles the mind that it's me. I am the person in the front, not in the background," he says.

This Southern California native and former Special Ed student is looking to change the game with his not -so -big vocabulary, but staying true to himself and his sound –.Hoping to inspire other kids who feel like they are the odd ones out with his lyrics.

Hopsin will be performing at Harlow's at 2708 J Street.

On a cold Friday night in a Rancho Cordova recording studio, Sacramento emcee C Plus, puts on head phones and steps up to the microphone. He reads rhymes from his notebook with intensity and a smooth flow. He plays it back with the beat, the song he just made is so intact that you wouldn't know that he's fighting a cold. Then, just like that, the last track is done, and The Purple Heart mix tape is complete.

On Tuesday, Feb. 24, C Plus, aka Chaz Wheeler of the group State Cap, will put out his second mix tape of the year, The Purple Heart.

If you ever doubted that Sacramento had hip hop artists worth listening to, this is the record that will erase them.

The Purple Heart has 13 tracks and is completely produced by Detroit producer, Black Milk. All the beats are fused with samples from Prince's Purple Rain album. A change of pace for Plus, he decided to go heavy on the writing and add more structure to the songs. Mostly his songs have no hook and are shorter.

With so many hip hop artists out already in Sacramento, his voice and lyrics set him apart from the rest. Plus has seen his share of success, being nominated with his group for a Sammie award last year and opening up for acts like Del The Funky Homosapiean, Dj QBert, Luck I am, and Pigeon John. Plus is still looking to grow – he's been featured in many Sacramento publications and regularly does live shows in and out of Sacramento.

Being a hip hop artist in Sacramento is not always easy but has shaped how he works,

"It's definitely made me more aggressive,” Plus said.. “I try to work on music all the time, I have to," he said.

Eager and working hard to get to the next level of success, there is nothing stopping him. Last month's mix tape, The Warm Up, was free and has been downloaded over more than 300 times online. For each day in March, Plus will post a new song on his MySpace.com page.

Plus is proud to be a long time Natomas resident and only hopes that he will be heard. "I am just another young African American kid from north Sacramento trying to make my mark on the planet and get the music out," he said.

The Purple Heart is available for free download at chaz.12ftdwende.com

About a year and half ago a group of teens from the city of Sacramento's Youth Commission got together and started to plan the ultimate place for teens to hang out. The group consists of 17 and 18 year old David Schenirer, Julian Nagler, Laura Manler, Alison Brown, Myria Arroyo and Molly Bailey. Not only would it be a place to spend time, but it would also serve as a way for students to get job experience, do homework, and offer smoothies rather than coffee, because as the teens found out, teens don't like coffee. The proposal is called Vibe - an urban youth lounge and career center.

In order to fund the initial opening and first two years of operation, fundraising efforts such as a gala dinner, private contributions and possible city grants have been ongoing.

Two of the teens who are a part of the Youth Commission, David Schenirer and Julian Nasler have also been looking for business advice and are meeting with two influential people in Sacramento each week. They have already met with political consultants, campaign managers and city of Sacramento Parks and Recreation Department officials. Mayor Kevin Johnson is among the people they are hoping to meet with.

Vibe is more than a just a place to see friends. Among the resources that will be made available to students are tutoring, career development and study labs with laptop computers. To save money on operating costs, teens will be hired to run most of the lounge through an ROP/WIA program. Both of those programs are offered at local high schools, and students will be trained and will work in exchange for school credits.

The building they plan to use is on 17th and K Streets, a location that was determined to be popular by a survey sent out to local teens.

"We have been granted this beautiful, empty building with these horrible floors, but we had architects work with us and we plan to morph it into this place that you're gonna walk in, and you're going to be amazed at the fact that it was created by teens," Nagler said.

Everyday use will be available to all students ages 13-18 for a monthly membership fee of $10. Members will be prompted to show a membership card upon entry and will be required to sign a policy and procedures agreement as well as a computer agreement.

The teen urban lounge will only be open for hours that coincide with the typical teen's school schedule. Monday through Thursday, the lounge will be open from 3-9:30 p.m., and on weekends it will be open until 10:30 p.m. , giving teens a half hour to get home before the city curfew. Weekends will include slam poetry, dances and live music nights.

The teens who are working to get Vibe open hope that it will be successful and a pilot program for more urban lounges around the city and beyond. They are confident that the lounge will be a success for a long time, saying "We really hope it's not one of those projects that dies when we leave. We really don't see it being like that."

The Vibe proposal will open in the spring of 2010 if the funds are raised.

Many of Sacramento's residents believe that they have few options when it comes to nightlife. The "sneak peek" fashion show this Saturday at the Distillery is an event to add to that list of things to do.

Saturday, Feb. 7 will be a chance to see the latest pieces from four local designers' spring collections. The show was organized mainly by Chuck Taylor of L!fe crew and Noel C. Tavares of Faedrah clothing company.

Both are Sacramento natives and current residents, and they have teamed up to bring a night of local designers. The list includes Agape, Martini Kisses and Amy Lola Marchiando. The show will also feature DJs spinning soulful hip-hop and a tribute to the late producer J Dilla, who died Feb. 10, 2006. Dilla's songs will play as the models walk the runway.

Tavares started Faedrah clothing in October of 2003 and says that hip-hop has influenced her clothing line, specifically Dilla. Her clothing includes men's and women's 80s street style, casual and urban wear.

She says she has done more fashion shows than she can count. This show will be a different direction for Faedrah, you can expect to see a dressier look that includes a lot of feminine colors, hearts and party dresses.

"I tried to stay away from these looks when I was younger, but now I am growing up," she said. Martini Kisses will emphasize fancy cocktail dresses, and Agape will have a futuristic, edgy look that could be considered couture.

Taylor, a pioneer of the hip-hop scene in Sacramento, puts together events around the city and is very hopeful for this fashion show, which is only his second.

He is very proud of the once-unhealthy hip-hop scene and is hoping that this show will get other designers on board for more shows in the future.

He is expecting a great turnout and wants people to know that this is not a typical hip-hop show, saying, "You can expect an eclectic show, a chill environment, not the standard, not the usual, not the boring."

There will also be a spoken-word performer from Oakland who is also part of the L!fe crew. This is a 21-and-older event and starts at 9 p.m. at The Distillery on 21st and L Streets.

About 30 people gathered in the Sacramento Press office Feb. 2 and learned how to convert everyday events in their lives into compelling news stories.

The workshop was given by Holly Heyser, professional journalist in residence at Sacramento State and adviser to The State Hornet newspaper.

The focus of the workshop was on helpful guidelines for how to turn ideas into news articles and how to find topics that are newsworthy.

Heyser also went over the foundations of journalism and writing in general.

The night started out with food for participants and introductions to some of the Sacramento Press staff.

As everyone finished socializing, they sat down to start the workshop. Heyser asked participants to suggest as many topics as they possibly could to turn into stories.

A lot of people were surprised to find out things that they found interesting could develop into a solid news story. Many people came up with worthy topics such as the bird problem at the Sacramento International Airport, the closure of local elementary schools and the rainy weather that is approaching for the weekend.

Before she got into how to get started with an article, Heyser went over how to back up stories with hard facts and the rules that go along with including facts and quotations. At about 7:55 p.m. Heyser wrapped up the workshop and took open questions. Geoff Samek the editor in chief/co-founder of Sacramento Press, also answered questions.

Everyone then gathered toward the front of the office for more socializing with Heyser and the staff.

If you ever wanted to connect with your spirit in motion and enjoy
yourself at the same time, the Body Joy Dance Jam may be just what
you're looking for.

Bella Driezler, a.k.a. DJ Delight, has organized her first monthly
Dance Jam for the community to dance the night away in a "positive
atmosphere." Attendees can expect free form dance to a wide variety of
music. The music starts off slow and gradually picks up as the night
progresses, Dreizler said.

Unlike going out to your local club, it is suggested that you go
barefoot or wear soft-soled dance shoes. It is a place where the
people who dance at home in front of the mirror alone can come out and
express themselves freely.

Driezler, a physical therapist for 35 years, realized that she had to
pick between her current career and her love of dance. She sold her
physical therapy clinic and used the space above her garage in her
east Sacramento home to create Body Joy.

Body Joy is the joy people get when they get in touch with their
bodies. This will be the theme throughout the Dance Jam.

Although this is the first Dance Jam, community dancing happened
frequently in the 1980s in Sacramento, and Driezler considers this to
be the revival. Dance Jam is for everybody age 15 and older who love
to dance, and it isn't just for those who take her classes.

"I wanted to draw together all those who wanted to dance, not only
those who want to take a class, because this not a class," Driezler
said.

Most of all, Dance Jam is a social event. Besides the free dancing,
there will be a potluck table for people to share snacks and
nonalcoholic beverages. There will also be plenty of places to sit and
connect with the other dancers.

Driezler hopes to attract all types of dancers, whether they are
stressed out or perfectly relaxed, tired or full of energy.

"It brings me great joy to see people walk into the space looking
tired, not quite sure that they want to put themselves out there," she
said. "Once they just start up and release, they have a great amount
of fun."

The Dance Jams are scheduled every last Friday of the month from 7-10
p.m., and the cost is $15.

About 150 worried parents crowded into the Washington Elementary
School auditorium Wednesday night to voice their concerns to the
school board over the possible closure of their children's school.

The meeting was held by the Sacramento City Unified School District
and was open to the community to discuss options for the usage of the
school, as funds dry up and the State Legislature looks to make deep
cuts into schools.

Superintendent Tom Barrenston and Assistant Superintendent Nancy
Purcell addressed the crowd and explained that they were there to
gather input and suggestions on not only facility use, but revenue
generation.

The meeting started with the grandfather of a student asking about
whether or not the school's budget crisis was Gov. Schwarzenegger's
fault. He also suggested that the school district could not afford to
pay for so many superintendents.

"The budget crisis is due to the fact that there is more unemployment
and less taxes," Barrenston said.

Many parents and one of Washington's own teachers were concerned over
rumors that 18 months ago a dance company toured the school with the
intention of closing down the school. This was denied by Barrenston,
who explained that although a dance company did tour the site, it was
only to hold an after-school and summer program, which would bring in
revenue.

Matt Mitchell, president of the River Park Neighborhood Association,
stood up and explained that closing down a school like Washington
elementary that was built in the 1950's would destroy community.
Mitchell also said he had to worry about his own neighborhood school,
Caleb Greenwood, being closed down.

The responses that were given all night mostly consisted of a "Thank
you" for the concern and a redirection to the district's website for a
better answer. Purcell had a list of vague possible short- and
long-term lease/rent opportunities, such as colleges, government
agencies and private sector. A parent quickly questioned this
information, wondering how the university she attended could afford to
rent out space from the district when its administrators, too,
announced they had a budget crisis.

Before the meeting was over, unhappy parents started to slowly leave
as Purcell reminded everyone that if they didn't get to ask their
question, they could fill out a suggestion card.

Parent Vanessa Bautista was not satisfied with the outcome of the meeting.

"It just seemed like the answers they gave me were very bureaucratic,"
Bautista said. "I just hope they don't close down the school after
open enrollment ends. Then where will my daughter go?"

Bautista lives two blocks from Washington elementary. The school
closing will not only affect how far she will have to travel to
another school, but her 5-year-old daughter as well.

"She has already made friends here that live close by, and I would
like her to build lasting friendships with [them]," Bautista said.

The school district's next meeting will be held Monday, Jan. 26 at
Alice Birney Elementary, 6251 14th Street in Sacramento.

Meetings will continue until Feb. 11 and go from 6-8 p.m.

I have been riding the light rail since I was 16. Since then I have gone through some interesting things,I have met many different people and mostly enjoyed my rides. It is tough to ride the light rail in the summer because it is so hot in the city. I wouldn't exactly consider myself attractive but I have been approached by guys that had some really funny pick up lines and things of that nature. I listen and even have a conversation with them even when what they say is nasty or ridiculous but at the end I think I am the one who scares them away with al my questions. I have never felt threatened by them. There was only one time when I was a bit worried and that was on a weekend at about 5 in the afternoon, a man yelled at someone to get out of his seat because he had a knife and he wasn't afraid to go back to jail. I've rode the light rail many a time at night and mostly I see bored teens and transients. The teens usually speak about inappropriate things loudly and annoy me but I try to remember that I was one of those teens once. It is very unfortunate to know that Ecogirl had such a horrible experience and I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. I however will be taking the light rail to sacramento city college this January.

Our public schools are in great need of attention and improvement, it is so unfortunate to see how many budget cuts have to be made at the cost of putting our future in jeopardy. I am not sure what the should do with the closed sites but maybe a community center for kids that offer arts and other programs that have been cut from school curriculum.
