Zoë Keating, cellist extraordinaire, graced West Sacramento with her presence on Friday, August 19th. Keating has been touring since February throughout Mexico, Europe and North America with her husband and son to promote her latest album, Into The Trees. Keating said she was taking the summer off, to her that means “only playing in California.” Playing to an intimate crowd at the Community of Spiritual Awareness (CSA) Events Center this willowy redhead transported the audience to magical places. Listening to such selections from Into the Trees, such as “The Path”, one can picture a winding trail through a lush forest with glimpses of grey sky above and a rolling ocean on the left. Th
Tyler Glenn, lead singer of Neon Trees, bounded across stage with his red motorcycle jacket flashing in the evening sun with the first notes of “Your Surrender” playing seductively in the audiences ears. Up went his leg in a kick and up to their feet went the crowd, shouting and waving their hands in the air. Fresh from opening for My Chemical Romance, Neon Trees made a stop in Sacramento before heading off to Indonesia for the next leg of their whirlwind tour. Hailing from Provo, Utah, this band is making a name for themselves with their first “official” debut album Habits which came out March of last year. Featuring the singles, “Animal” and “1983” this CD with 8 tracks may be small
On Saturday, July 2, Pace Bathrooms hosted a fun informational evening filled with movies, guest speakers and delicious, fresh food. The purpose of the evening was to raise awareness about GMO’s and the “Truth in Labeling” initiative slated for the 2012 ballot. Metha Pace, the hostess, did just that by slyly employing the audience’s senses. First on the program was the eye-opening movie “The World According to Monsanto”. The movie was meant to introduce the audience to who Monsanto is (an agricultural biotechnology corporation) and what exactly GMO’s are (a genetically modified organism). Monsanto is the chief producer of genetically engineered seeds with approximately 90% being used
Six o’clock Friday night found people waiting patiently in line at the Crest Theatre. They were waiting for the doors to open into Sacramento’s 10th French Film Festival. The festival started with a not-so-humble beginning in 2002 when they opened at Tower Theatre to a sold -out crowd, with a line to the pre-party around the block. They have since moved to the Crest, which seats about 940 compared to the 500 seats at Tower. The festival is the brainchild of Cécile Mouette Downs and Connie Georgiu. Downs still serves as the artistic and executive director. The festival has found support and acceptance from the community, artistic and otherwise. Among those who have embraced the festival
On Friday, May 27, the Crest Theatre hosted a CD release show for “Hands Up,” by Pastor Alonzo G. Morris. Guests included the Paradise Mass Choir from Paradise Baptist Church of Sacramento, the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra and Lenny Williams. “Hands Up,” a labor of love two years in the making, was produced by Derek “DOA” Allen and features talents such as Pam Hunt, Pastor Terrell Jones, Teddy Cross and Pam Odem. Tickets for the event were $15. The price included the three hour concert and a copy of “Hands Up.” Part of the proceeds from the event went to the Ronald McDonald House which serves about 1,000 children and families in the Sacramento area each year. The night started off
