Hell, the entire railyard area is toxic. There's no way the developer is going to remove ALL the toxic soil and you believe they'll leave plenty for future generations! This whole development is as insane as building new homes in the flood plain called Natomas. I remember when they finally bulldozed the Mandella Community Garden downtown and found organo-heads had been growing veggies in poisoned soil all these years! If you want to live or work within the Toxic Zone you do so at your own risk. And leave the freakin' Heritage oak trees alone!

Actually, it's 47 percent of earners who don't pay a cent of Federal income tax. These parasites, however, always seem to get a $1,000 to $3,000 refund courtesy of child credits and other "deductions" the government grants them. EVERYBODY needs to pay taxes - even a little - to make it work.
By the way, Hatch violated the terms of his release and yesterday a U.S. District judge said he very well may send him back to jail.

Jerry made his point at this media dog-and-pony show - California will be shopping at Wal-mart instead of Macy's. He'll avoid the common folk because of time restraints and because the peasants soon will be at his chambers with pitchforks and torches. This is no time for back-slapping and shaking hands. California is on the brink of destruction and many will soon be feeling the pain. This silly, little story was actually very entertaining and a respite from the usual Capitol-crowd reports that put us to sleep.

I applaud the mayor's Greenwise push but the true celebrities of this initiative are the regular folks who will make it work. Greenwise is a no-brainer with many of us already conducting the day-to-day business of growing our own food, recycling, water conservation, using sustainable building materials and energy conservation. But let's face it, green technology isn't going to make a dent in our local economy and joblessness for a very, very long time.

Mr. Gideons says the general opera audience is age 65 and older? That doesn't bode well for opera. I know of only one couple younger than 65 who attend opera. Ballet, local theater and symphony are in the same sinking ship. Even Broadway plays are closing at an alarming rate. You have to wonder if the old school performing arts are even capable of surviving in the Facebook/iPad/videogame digital world of today.

I thought Mr. Barton's story was well done. Yes, there is a "cultural flavor" between urbanites and suburanites and it's deep. Polar opposites. Roseville "gets all the improvements" because many more rich people live in Placer County and the tax base doesn't have to support a lot of social programs, drive-by shootings and urban renewal. Mr. Barton's story cries out for more in depth looks at the way people view each other's lifestyles - urban and suburban. It's a hot topic of discussion on the online forums on a regular basis and is often discussed by people face-to-face.

Change the hours of Second Saturday to noon-6 p.m. and you'll have fewer major crimes associated with the event. Gangsters don't even crawl out of bed before 5 p.m. Who said it had to be scheduled at night when every low life is on the prowl for victims? New hours would change the dynamics from drunken brawl to family-friendly and refocus on the arts theme, rather than the "monthly kegger." The bar and restaurant owners may not like the earlier hours, but it would be much more wholesome for everybody involved.

He beats everybody, including the Bay area hacks and many of his stories go national. Besides being a top pro and hard working, Barrows' asset is knowing how to be a reporter - and a damn good one. He obviously works sources and gets emails at 3 am from some Bay area bar. I marvel at how good this guy is and how lucky SacBee is to have a beat reporter who can't be beat!

One signage thing that has always bothered me is the faded, ripped bar band posters stapled like wallpaper on posts around the city. It looks ghetto-awful. I known of one elderly couple who want to attend council meetings but they won't go downtown after dark. And, not everybody works 8-5 these days.
Bill, your figures are so flawed I hesitate to even respond. But here are a few key corrections:

California had a record 17.3 million eligible voters in 2008. You have to be 18 to vote in California, so not every single resident can vote.
The 2008 voter turnout in California was huge - nearly 80 percent cast ballots because of Prop. 8 and a pretty big presidential election concerning Mr. Obama.
Of those who voted for Obama, 30 percent voted "Yes" on Prop 8.
Prop 8 passed during a massive voter turnout election and despite what pollsters had predicted.
The only thing I agree with in your post is that we do need to re-evaluate our initiative process.

What you say Mark is how it should be, but it's not that simple. It "worked" as you say because you feel the judgement was based on Constitutional merits that suit your opinion on the subject. Judge Walker is a well-known gay man, which shouts judicial activism (Reagan appointee or not). How would you feel if a red-neck, Bible-toting Christian Federal judge had ruled the other way? I somehow don't feel you'd embrace that obvious conflict of interest and potentially-biased ruling. Activism and the appearance of activism should have no place in legal rulings - Federal and otherwise. And, our initiatives need to be scrutinized for legal muster a whole lot better.

Good story, very well balanced. This latest judicial ruling on our initiative process begs the bigger story - why bother to vote on controversial issues when the court very likely will strike down the majority vote? Gay marriage has yet to pass a vote of the people in any state, being defeated 30 or so times. it's only legal in a handful of states where activist judges have deemed it so. In fact., Prop 8 was predicted to fail right before election day and its passage surprised and shocked people. We really need to re-evaluate our initiative process AND court rulings by activist judges - both conservative and liberal judges.

That said, Arizona hotel occupancy and revenue actually have increased since these inane boycotts, some major cities like Phoenix in the double-digits! All idiots like Fong and Mayor Johnson did was make people angry enough to travel to Arizona and spend money!

I guess if you look at the membership rolls (does the Tea Party actually have members?) of all these groups, La Raza, Tea Party and NAACP, you'd find mostly the color of skin they represent. That would seem racially-based, wouldn't it?
Members of all these organizations have been called "racist" over the years, but that doesn't make the entire group a racist organization. So, yes, it would appear all of these organizations are racially- based but not necessarily racist organizations.

I don't see much difference between the Tea Party, NAACP and La Raza. If you go to any of their gatherings I'll bet you'll see a big majority of the color of skin they represent. While the Tea Party doesn't specificly represent an ethnic group like the NAACP and La Raza, they seem to have absorbed Caucasians as a base. That's probably because many whites have felt they aren't being represented politically and were without an identifiable advocacy group. And, like the NAACP and La Raza, the Tea Party will continue to be criticized - rightly so and not.

KJ & business/developers. The unions showed they can pressure the council to get their way. No way the unions, other than the police and fire unions, want a strong mayor. KJ backs public safety but the rest of the unions would have been vulnerable under strong mayor.

Knapp is right about the Dems not wanting a strong mayor. The Dems are trying to protect their favorite special interest - the unions. Dems and unions have bonded into what will be a suicide pact once the treasury is bare. This whole strong mayor thing is nothing more than unions and Dems trying to one-up the mayor and the business community. Eventually, the unions will lose this one unless they resort to printing money and getting away with it!

Why not take the cheaper, generic story written by "Joe Anybody From Anywhere" and then have one of his editors create a informational box that pertains to Sacramento posted with the story? Guess he doesn't need to budget. His idea of an iPhone app for Sac Mag is great.

Private donors can give all they want to help arts organizations and that's how it should be in today's tough fiscal times. I don't think you'll see much voter support for spending budget on the "arts," although downtown/Midtown Saccies are more prone to buying into giving tax dollars to art projects/artists.

It's past time for Sacramento to move into the modern age of government where progress can be made and the city can finally move forward from the Fargo debacle. Every poll shows 61-71 percent in favor. A SacBee poll earlier this week showed 94 percent are against a Sacramento City Council boycott and another poll on KCRA's web site had 89 percent in favor of Arizona! Politicians can't and won't overlook public support and it will take years for court challenges to clear.

I was surprised 1,000 people showed up to the lottery street party! That's impressive. I heard most of them stuck around after the selections to eat and party. That's good for the local economy. The Kings are a valuable asset to the city whether you enjoy sports or not. And they're a wonderful diversion from the constant ills of our country.

Patrick J. makes a good point about shopping only at "certified" farmers markets. But "certified" only means the county Agricultural Commissioner has allowed these growers permission to sell direct from farm to market. It doesn't mean the produce is organic. Some growers use the "organic" or "100 percent organic" signs at market. Apples, because of coddling moth damage, are the most pesticide ridden of the fruits. Look for blemishes and worm holes (which means the worm as vacated the premises!) for true organically-grown apples. Bon appetit!

Good story, but people should realize that things like apples (in your photos), bananas, pineapples, tomatoes, etc. that are sold this early at Farmer's markets are out of season or impossible to grow as a food crop around here. Vendors buy these fuits and veggies from points unknown and chemicals used unknown. Just because it's sold at a Farmer's Market doesn't make it pesticide free or mean it's grown locally! Pineapples? Give me a break!
