Excellent piece - both story and photos -- taking us to this significant event, such a cultural asset for Sacramento.
A well-written story and beautiful pictures. It is great that these lovely young women are able to make this traditional coming of age from their own culture, even as they ready for success in the larger culture.
Thank you very much for bringing this to light. I also live in Tahoe Park area, and was NOT aware that the design had changed. This is very disappointing. How did the City Council and the mayor let them get by with this subterfuge? Again we see the difference between 'legal' and 'ethical' behavior.
Thank you for writing about this. I didn't know of this talk, and couldn't have made it anyway. Always disappointing when the other media don't cover the seminal thinkers we get at the local colleges & universities. Liked the article and the thoughtfulness of the comments.
Also, re CEQA - note the letter in today's Bee by the Building and Trades group that wants to weaken CEQA.
Thank you so much to these groups who are questioning this. A certain mindset always claims the 'promise' of jobs outranks all else - a very seductive, yet usually empty promise. Stay after your city council members -- they're supposed to be watching out for these things [unless the mayor's 'strong mayor' initiative goes through, of course!].
Hi -- good series idea, but shouldn't it be listed under the list of 'Culture' stories? If I refer people to this site, I'd like them to be able to find it easily. Thanks for attention to this art form.
I will be putting these in my purse and re-reading them again. Most satisfying.
Good for Bob for his willingness to put himself and his voice out there. As for SMAC - I wish all my tax money were used so wisely to benefit the community we live in.

A nonprofit cultural center operates with different priorities than a commercial gallery, though both have their place. In these times of tight monies this could be a very good solution, meeting the needs of both parties.
