The Sacramento Sheriff's K9 Association held a fundraiser and demonstration Sunday at Pet Food Express on Fair Oaks Blvd.

Along with meeting the K9's, getting to rub a K9 belly and meet their handlers, goers had the opportunity to purchase the new 2012 SSDK9 calendar loaded with dynamic images of the dogs and their handlers by XSiGHT Photography and Video.

Ike, one of twelve active K9’s in the unit, has seen his fair share of rough and tumble, part of the job as a K9. Deputy Pomerson, Ike’s partner and handler, related how Ike went over a fence after a bad guy and punctured a lung. With the punctured lung, Ike still latched on to the bad guy until deputies apprehended the perp. Ike’s chest swelled to almost twice his normal size and he was rushed to medical care and saved. After a two week recovery, Pomerson related, Ike eagerly went back to work.

Pomerson shared tales of his partner, such as how he slides back and forth in the back seat responding to calls.

“It seems the more he (Ike) is tossed around in the back, [the] more he’s excited and ready to get the bad guy when we arrive at the scene.”

Pomerson also explained the toll the tossing around takes on the K9’s, giving them an average of five to seven workable years. When the K9’s retire, “they get to de-stress and just enjoy the rest of their life as a pet and adapt well,” stated Pomerson.

We got to tag along while Pomerson gave Ike a bath at the pet store. Even though the water was nice and warm, Pomerson agreed Ike would much rather be getting wet in the river.

When Ike retires, Pomerson will purchase him from the county for one dollar plus tax, and Ike will enjoy his retirement as the family pet. With Ike’s retirement, Pomerson will get a new K9 partner. At that time, Pomerson explained, the hardest part for Ike will be not going to work.

On their off days they do absolutely no work related things at all, and when it’s time to go back to work and Pomerson dons his uniform, Ike gets all excited.

“Even when I chirp the alarm on the car or move the car around, Ike gets all excited thinking it’s time to got to work,” said Pomerson.

A large portion of the fundraising proceeds are dedicated to the retirement needs of the K9’s who served their community. The fundraising calendar is a wonderful way to get to know the beautiful and talented animals that protect and serve our community.

If you are interested in donating and being involved with the SSDK9 association, their site has all the information and details you need to get engaged. Be sure to check out SSDK9 Association fundraising golf tournaments and marathons as well.

It has been such a hoot and an honor working w/ Kati this past year. She's a quirky and fun addition to our team who keeps you laughing. Don't let the gray hair fool ya... this gal is no "tender-foot". Formerly an underwater photographer for the U.S. Navy, she loves the action scenes (the juicy stuff as she says). Be sure to check out her bio... it's a blast.

Thanks for the great times this year Kati... looking forward to many more in 2012.

Wow! What an honor! Thank you so much SacPress!. Every member of our team loves what they do... it's their passion and it shows. Our team continues to grow and with each person that comes to our team, it just adds another layer and facet to this talent rich group. It's specifically our SacMav team that is out on the streets at night and sometimes during the day capturing our local heroes in action as they serve our community putting their lives on the line. It's an honor to capture them in action and bring that you here at SacPress and SacMav.com.

RANT: Thanks Ben, Geoff and the rest of the SacPress crew for such an incredible news aggregation and delivery platform. When you utilize citizen based news you get passionate stories. Thanks for such a great article Patricia.... evidently SacBee sent someone but they couldn't even squeak out an article on such an awesome and festive event. All they came up with was 50 posed snapshots that you can buy: http://www.sacbee.com/2011/10/08/3970028/snapshots-turn-verein-oktoberfest.html#storylink=misearch

That's a real slap in the face to the folks at Turn Verein. They gained access under media credentials, never wrote a story, posted fan photos for purchase and labled it "news". No wonder SacBee is dying.

Keep up the great work SacPress and contributors!

By the way... here are all our SacMav photos from the event. Enjoy and download for free:

In addition, this article has nothing to do w/ KJ, it's not opinion, it's facts of an event for public information.

For the rest of our "commentors", in the future, we'll continue to post informational articles about our findings to alert and inform the public as we remain on watch. We will no longer come and play in your sandbox of rhetoric, we'll let you kids play by yourselves. For the few of you that we did come here and play with, there's hundreds that are elated and very grateful for our efforts, there's no reason for us to come here and feed ammo to a few malcontents who twist even the simplest well intended words into something else. -Enjoy

It's well known that when people are hurting, they manifest their hurt in anger and lashing out most often at those who are trying to help. Likewise, preachers are known for their longwindedness and analogies, so let me not disappoint here: when a dog is injured and hurting, all it knows is that it is injured and hurting. Well meaning human rescuers often get snapped and snarled at, even bit pretty good while hazarding rescue efforts, but it typically does not deter the rescuers from their efforts. Davi, Tony, "You Want What"... make no mistake, your snaps, snarls and bites here will not deter the pastors from what they know they're God given mission is. They will continue to stand, they will continue to remain on watch, they will continue to sound the alarm and even move with haste to rescue you even though you don't realize you need rescuing and are ungrateful. We are used to it and we did sign up for it. So here we are, here we stand and here we will remain.

As I recall, there is another citizen watchman on a very strong mission to sound the warning alarm to his community... something about bootleg vendors? I believe this watchman is even taking the time to secretly video tape and post the infractions and fight for what is right, invoke his first amendment rights as a citizen and even using SacPress and Youtube to get the message out. My hat is off to that man, he's in the battle just like the pastors are. http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/57609/Bootleg_Banquet

I was searching for words and I think Rhonda stole them... she is so right on. SacPress will continue to live and breath... it has so many incredible talented voices that breath so much life into it. But, the spirit, soul, timber and bravato (especially the bravato) of your voice will never be replaced in this choir. You'll make your Cameos, I'm sure, but knowing you've "left the building" and won't be at your desk tomorrow just leaves more than a hallow empty thud. I can only imagine how hard this decision was on Geoff , Ben and Joel... but at the end of the day, business is business and times like these truly test the metal of great businessmen; I left the COO position of what should have been an incredible company, because my friend and CEO, couldn't get that. So in that, Ben, Geoff and Joel, I applaud you. As others have so adeptly mentioned already... I applaud all of you for how this parting of ways has been handled. David, I'm sure Kati and I will get to share more good times w/ you at Naked Lounge... I feel a latte coming on already. And now maybe we'll both have time to work on that Midtown project. ;-).
Thank you for locating this section of the IRS code (I would address you respectfully by name if you weren't hiding behind a user name). First let me address your first statement: "THIS GROUP" just formed a couple of weeks ago during the redistricting process. So "THIS GROUP" has not addressed the "SMI Initiative".

Furthermore, let me highlight paragraph four which is the information I was referring to in a previous comment as to what churches and non-profits can and can not do: "The IRS has published Revenue Ruling 2007-41, which outlines how churches, and all 501(c)(3) organizations, can stay within the law regarding the ban on political activity. Also, the ban by Congress is on political campaign activity regarding a candidate; churches and other 501(c)(3) organizations can engage in a limited amount of lobbying (including ballot measures) and advocate for or against issues that are in the political arena. The IRS also has provided guidance regarding the difference between advocating for a candidate and advocating for legislation."

"THIS GROUP" is functioning within the legal parameters and have not even come close to the boundaries of such. Don't think that out of 20 pastors, that we do not have effective and well versed legal representation and advisers.

So the real question is, what is your real issue? No pastor in 'THIS GROUP" has campaigned for any candidate, initiative or ballot issue. The only thing "THIS GROUP" of pastors has done has acted as a group of concerned citizens holding our local government accountable, making sure they treat you right and fairly. I'm failing to see the issue. What you should take exception and issue with is the obvious, blatant and dishonest back door politics that have taken place by your city council. What you should take up issue with is a city council that literally refuses to work together, and literally told pastors that they don't care what "The People" think or want in a meeting with the pastors. You have council members in office right now who's only agenda (no matter what is right for you) is to appose your Mayor, and that is known fact.

With that, let me encourage you to turn this energy you have to oppose, to the direction of your City Council which you should be holding accountable. The pastors are simply being "watchmen" and shedding light and warnings when necessary. For the life of me, I can not see why any American would have any issue with that.

Allow me to bring the very real relevance to it: Your "no" answer makes your initial question/statement completely irrelevant. ...and in kind (to quote you) "...I'll let you ponder the reason why...." From here, as a pastor and voting American, believe me I want to make my next remarks VERY personal, but out of respect for the guidelines, the intended purpose of SacPress and its incredible staff, I will refrain.
Pastors, churches, non-profits, etc may allocated a percentage of funds and time promoting specific political isues and agendas... that they can not at all is a false impression proppigated by those who fear non-profits and churches. Much like the falsity of "separation of church and state". Those who know their history know that phrase is ment for government not to control churches, not visa versa.

Both of which are mute points here anyway Tony, because these pastors are simply keeping accountability... pure and simple. They have not supported any candidates, they have not told their congregations how to vote, etc. But thanks for your concern Tony, the pastors appreciate community members as yourself looking out for their best intrest as they do that for you at council meetings and direct accountability meetings with councilmembers. In fact, I hear they will be at city hall this week knocking on council members doors who have not met with them, on yours and the rest of the communities behalf.

By the way, speaking of accountability, Tony, have you registered to vote?

Sacramento, CA | Area Pastors promissed to remain on watch, holding current city council members and hopefuls accountable.

Area pastors remain on task as promissed, holding both current council members and June 2012 City Council hopefuls accountable. Today, Allen Warren (running for the district 2 seat), and Betty Williams (running for the district 8 seat) were interviewed by a large constituency of area pastors.

Both hopefuls shared their backgrounds, qualifications, goals and priorities and then were asked tough and challenging questions and quizzed by the pastors. Warren and Williams were interviewed and "put on the hot seat" seperately by the group of pastors.

Sharing his background and qualifications with area pastors, Allen Warren, who intends to run for the district 2 seat, shared how his life was set for pro baseball with the New York Yankees when his carrer path took a drastic change. He found himself on Wall Street being trained and groomed with a large financial agency and then further into business. Warren stated that job creation is a top priority on his agenda.

Warren stated that he had not inteded politics to become a carrer choice for himself, but with the currentl lack of leadership he feels he had to step up. He promissed pastors that he is prepared to "stay the course".

Betty Williams, with a long diverse tenure in many upper level positons with the NAACP and long time community advocate, stated that crime and education top her list of priorties. Under incumbant, Bonnie Pannell's watch, Sacramento Police Chief, Rick Braziel, has indicated publicly that district eight's Meadowview area has become the worst crime ridden area in the city, Williams stated. Already on advisory counciles with the Sherrif and Police Chief, the Meadowview area is high on Williams radar for crime reduction.

Williams also advised the pastors that she has hired Sam Walton, the late Sam Pannell's campaign manger to manage her campaign. When asked what defines the difference between Pannell and herself, Williams emphatically stated, "My leadership is stronger than Bonnie Pannell's." Williams stated that she has already received endorsements from Mayor Kevin Johnson, Jay Schenirer and Willie Brown among others.

Moderator, Pastor Darryl Heath, made it very clear to both contenders that "there is no quid pro quo here". He was careful to state that the pastors are not promissing their vote and are not expecting anything in exchange. He stated to both that "the only thing we want from you is for you to do your job with integrity and honesty."

The pastors have promissed current and future council membes to have at least one represenative present at every council meeting and to remain on watch for the city as a whole.

Disclosure: I am an area pastor and affiliated with the pastor's newly formed watch group, CYHU- Can You Hear Us Now

Tony... all great points, however, those who continue to refer to the physical local of UCD and it not being physically moved demonstrate that they entirely miss the issues at hand. So let's move beyond UCD and to a much weightier concern or an issue that should be a concern:

Does it not bother anyone that six members of city council showed their true colors? Does it not bother anyone that shady backdoor tactics were brought to bare demonstrating little to no integrity? Does it not bother anyone that while McCarty in essence called an entire community (of incredible people) gutter trash (tried to make it more palatable by phrasing it "guttural discourse") that minutes latter true "gutter language" was uttered by co-council member Pannell directed at a citizen (but that was okay because she was stressed). Six council-members effectively railroaded what was supposed to be a democratic process right under everyone's noses... and this is okay? Forget the boundaries and the UCD issue... Sacramentians should be way more than furious at the actions of their elected officials.

There is a much greater problem here that the entire city of Sacramento needs to be concerned about than redistricting (though that is very important). You're representatives (save Schenirer, Ashby and Johnson) demonstrated in technicolor that they don't care about you, they care about their personal agenda. Don't be apathetic... don't say "oh that's politics for ya"... KNOW IT'S NOT! Step up and do something about it.

Congratulations to everyone! I'm definitely honored to have the 10,000th milestone contribution, but that honor belongs to every single person who's finger (click) print has graced this creation. What is also moving to me is that the 10,000th article isn't just another contribution, it's about a community in renascence, a community that has fought long and hard, more than most of us can realize or imagine, and the fruits of their literal blood, sweat and tears is coming to fruition. I've stayed behind my camera, capturing the history, emotion and true community effort during this redistricting fight; I haven't written on it because I'm to close to the story and very biased, but I believe the images tell it all. So, congratulations Oak Park! Keep up the fight! This article and 10,000th milestone post is dedicated to you.

Sacramento, CA | Tim Mason, CEO of California based Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, with Mayor Kevin Johnson, Councilman Jay Schenirer and other community memberrs broke ground Wednesday morning in a well attended ceremony in Oak Park.

The market will be built on the north west corner of Broadway and 34th Street. Mayor Kevin Johnson stated that when he came back from college he said "what can we do with this piece of property? As a year or two went by, you realize that properites this size get into the wrong hands." Johnson bought the land in 2002 and just held it "till the right person came in or the right company said 'we want to do something that will be an assest to the community.'" Prior to Fresh & Easy, Johnson stated that "they wanted to put a used appliance store there..." Johnson stated that this (Fresh & Easy) is the right business.

“I’m excited to welcome Fresh & Easy to our neighborhood,” said Johnson. “Fresh & Easy is not only bringing more good jobs to Sacramento, but also high-quality, healthy food at affordable prices to neighborhoods that don’t always have access to such foods.”

Johnson thanked Chris Brown who worked tirelessly and handled the real estate transaction, making sure the properety fell into the right hands.

In his opening remarks, Mason stated, "We hope to continue to be part of the solution in providing greater food access and help give food options to all types of communities... at a price they can afford right where they live."

Mason stated they have opened 137 stores since they opened in 2007, invested over two billion dollars and created more than 4500 jobs. In Oak Park, the new store will create 300 construction jobs and when it is finished it will create 30 retail jobs for the community.

"We have worked very hard to create a thoughtful business and a business that can make a difference in the community" Mason stated.

In a press release, Fresh & Easy noted the locations opening in greater Sacramento in 2012

Watt Ave. & El Camino Ave.- Sacramento

34th St. & Broadway- Sacramento

Mack Rd. & Franklin Blvd.- Sacramento

Lincoln & Sterling Rd.- Lincoln

Elk Grove Florin Rd. & Calvine Rd.- Elk Grove

E. Natoma St. & Blue Ravine Rd.- Folsom

"When you say Oak Park, when you put those two words together, people show up; people have been showing up for a long time. We are hitting our stride in this community; we are doing great things" Councilman Jay Schenierer stated.

"I know you said that you like to put your stores in all types of communities, so on behalf of Oak Park, I want to thank you for putting your store in the best and most engaged community that we have in Sacramento" Schenirer stated to Mason.

"When you look at Oak Park you see a diverse community, not just one sector of Sacramento" said Schenirer

Fresh & Easy has created nearly 5,000 jobs in California, Arizona and Nevada. Entry-level positions start at $10 an hour in California and provide room for employees to grow quickly. The company offers quarterly bonuses of up to 10% as well as a 401(k) with company match. Fresh & Easy believes everyone deserves access to affordable and comprehensive healthcare and provides all employees the opportunity to work at least 20 hours per week, which entitles everyone in the business to vision, prescription drug, dental and medical coverage with Fresh & Easy paying at least 75%.

In an impromptu open dialog, Mason committed to Johnson to install a solar roof and create space on the grounds for community members to sell their produce from the community gardens being developed. As a gesture and token of the commitment, Mason took his tie off and gave it to Johnson. Johnson holding the tie up stated that he would wear the tie at the ribbon cutting when the store opens.

"Fresh & Easy is going to open six stores in this area, that's a total of 150 jobs. We have double digit unemployment rates; that is a big deal." Johnson stated.

Fresh & Easy touts being a "green" company and you can learn more about them at their site>>>

Fresh & Easy invites community members to join their "Friends" to say in the know>>>

Just to clarify, Neilson commented at 6:52PM, Johnson gave his charge to respect council members at 6:53PM when Pennell fired back at him, then 2 more speakers, then McCarty made his comments (even though he wasn't supposed to comment), then 2 more speakers then Bonnie Parker who referenced Pannell's late husband at 7:06...per the sequential time stamps on my photos.

There is much that is disturbing with what took place at City Hall last night, but one thing that has just been gnawing on me is that out of the very few and notably less passionate testimonies from McCarty's district, the one message that was clear from them was "we don't care which district we are in, just keep us in the same district as the hospital so that when we do have issues the same council member is representing us"--paraphrased but that was the gist I got (and those in attendance, correct me if I'm misinterpreting that please).

So, that being the only unified message coming from his district, what did he go and do? ...make a sub-motion that did exactly what his only speaking few constituents asked him and the council not to do.

So let me get this right jl2237... once a community has fallen to crime and a bad element, when the upstanding citizens of said community unite in rebirthing and taking back their community, the local government should cut off their legs? There's a significant difference between "whining" and speaking out and fighting for what you believe in and have fought for for over 40 years. My ears didn't hear whining last night in City Council Chambers, my ears heard a community uniting and vehemently fighting for what they believe in. In my eyes what happened last night was extremely patriotic and very American. The public had their voice and they will again next week. The beautiful thing about that is, jl2237, you have that same opportunity, and since you obviously have a great deal to say on the topic, exercise your right and go be heard at the City Council meeting next Tuesday.

Excellent point Ross. It was well noted last night that Oak Park is experiencing a "Renascence" and is at the crucial "Tipping Point". It was also noted that to draw the new lines would only benefit the Havenhurst neighborhood with an aprox 1000 additional constituents, but at the same time it would nearly cripple the progress of a community that is in a turnaround. (forgive me if I have some of the numbers wrong...going off memory ;-) but that was the jest of it). The resounding question of the evening was "Why?" The people of OakPark just want to know what good is this boundary shift serving? Now I'm not a member of OakPark but I'm in the community nearly every day, signs of change and turnaround are evident. Call me ignorant, but I thought changing a community from a bad one to a good one was a good thing.

Sacramento, CA | A level 3 Hazmat situation shuts down a large industrial area in South Sacramento. Budget weakend hazmat team has to reach out with unusual mutual aid requests.

Wednesday morning, the Sacramento City Fire Department was called to Mike and Sons Inc, in the 8500 block of Elder Creek Road, for a commercial trailer fire. When firefighters arrived “they realized the doors were shut and there was a very pungent odor; so they turned this into a level three hazmat which is the highest level of hazmat response that we have”, Niko King, Assistant Chief for Sacramento City Fire Department stated.

As things progressed, they contacted the shipper and the property owner discovering that there were over forty household products in the trailer, King stated. “For some unknown reason, something happened in there and there was a chemical reaction taking place.”

Evacuations began immediately. King stated that as a result of the off-gassing of the product and wind direction, over fifty-five business were evacuated which equated to 520 people. Reverse 911 was utilized to assist with the evacuations. Traffic was backed up all the way down Young Creek Drive as area workers vacated the industrial park. King stated that the evacuation was in place for about four hours. King also stated that a seven digit hotline was put in place to update evacuees and let them know when they could return to their businesses.

One person, who reportedly inhaled a good amount of the vapors, was transported to the hospital via paramedics.

Large fire suppression lines were put in place in the event they had to fight fire, and measures were taken to protect storm drains from potential contaminated water runoff as a result of firefighting efforts.

“What’s unique about this, Sacramento Fire department just experienced some budget cuts; it cut our hazmat team right in half,” King stated sternly. “…so, we had mutual aid resources from Metro Fire, Hazmat 109 come in. And what was really unique, we had to reach out and get Roseville’s hazmat team to come into the City of Sacramento to assist in mitigating this incident.”

It was finally determined that the substance was some sort of refrigerant oil. The assumption is that due to the warm rising temperature in the trailer, the container of product exploded then mixing with other materials in the trailer.

Many agencies responded to this incident to assist Sacramento City Fire, such as: Sacramento Metro Fire, Roseville Fire, and CERT to name a few. The Red Cross also responded with their Disaster Relief unit.

King stated that all the hazards had been mitigated and the incident would be turned back over to the shipping company.

“The Sacramento Police Department is embarking on a unique adventure that will bring national attention to the nearly 19,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed while protecting the communities of this nation,” Sacramento Police Chief Rick Braziel stated.

The Chief further stated, “On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 53 hours. As a racing member of Team SPD, I encourage you to help us at the Sacramento Police Department honor America’s law enforcement officers as we work to commemorate the sacrifice of our fallen comrades.”

As the team rides their final leg Friday, the time clock is shadowed by their passionate mission. Todd Carr, crew person, stated “it is stressful because of tough navigation, little sleep and the climbs. This past week has taken a toll on our racers. We can’t see the end of the tunnel because we have major mountains in our way.”

As the team members trade off in the relay, they’re able to get messages from the crew members who are monitoring their Facebook and Twitter feeds. You are able to cheer them on through this last leg by messaging them directly.

With their climb to nearly 11,000 feet above sea level Monday, the team has climbed a total of 55,952 vertical feet since the start of the race Saturday.

From this point, the majority of the race is downhill except for a few smaller elevations climbs later in the race.

At the time of this posting, the team is skirting the southern part of Colorado and is about half way across the state. At this point they have traveled almost 1,030 miles and have about 1,969 miles to go.

The only significant challenge reported today was a racers blown tire shortly after the start of the day.

Team SacPD is now 33 hours into the race and have traveled over 615 miles. They have climed a total of 32,744 vertical feet and are presently around 5,000 feet above sea level and will reach around 11,000 feet in this assent.

The day was not without challenges. Early in the day one of the riders wasn't feeling well and had to sit out several relay rotations, but later returned to the race reportedly doing well. The same van that broke down Saturday developed mechanical trouble again Sunday near Sedona, Arizona, forcing the team to shuffle some crew and gear around.

Overall, the crew and team remain strong and in good spirits. They have aproximately 2,381 miles to go.

Six people affiliated with Team SacPD headed to Oceanside Wednesday in two vans; fourteen more crew members and racers traveled Thursday to join them. The relay teams for RAAM will start on Saturday at Oceanside Pier. Other RAAM races began Tuesday. The race finish is in Annapolis, Maryland between June 24th and 27th at the City Dock. Fourteen additional Team SacPD members head to Oceanside Thursday.

You may have never heard of “Team SacPD” before, and with good reason; the team was recently assembled and this is their first major undertaking. “As the name of the team may suggest, we are all police officers here in the City of Sacramento. While our day-to-day jobs vary from patrol officer to the Chief of Police, we do share one hobby… cycling! When we heard about another local team (Donate Life) who participated in the event, we decided to see if we, too, could compete in this incredible race. When we later learned that there had never been an all-police team, we were sold. It didn’t take long before we had assembled a team, picked a worthy cause (to recognize and pay tribute to fallen officers) and started preparing for the epic ride. We have no idea how this adventure will end, but we welcome you to share the journey with us,” the team states on their website.

Per RAAM, Racers must traverse 3000 miles across 12 states and climb over 170,000 vertical feet. Teams will ride 350-500 miles a day, racing non-stop.The 2011 race will be the 30th edition of RAAM.

Chief Braziel states, “The Sacramento Police Department is embarking on a unique adventure that will bring national attention to the nearly 19,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed while protecting the communities of this nation. Starting June 18, 2011, the Sacramento Police Department Cycling Team will be the first law enforcement team ever to compete in the Race Across America. The race is a 3,000-mile bicycle race from California to Maryland.”

You will be able to track the teams live location and progress via the “My Athlete Live” interface. On the right, you can scroll down to the teams and select “Team Sacramento Police”. Their GPS tracker will appear on the interactive map and the timeline that also shows the elevation they are racing at.

Our Kati Garner is embeded with TeamSacPD and will be with them for the entire race. As we can, we will continue to bring you regular updates on the team’s progress and developments.

Yeah... got to agree with newguyinsac. Karl, one thing you have to remember, when you are in PUBLIC, you are public, or it wouldn't be called public. There is no "privacy" issue because there is no "privacy". The police department could retain those files for millions of years and it would not impact your constitutional rights in any way shape or form. If I could take an educated stab at why the files are only retained for 30 days, it would be due to cost of storing the files. If no crime has been reported in the specified areas within 30 days, the files are most likely not needed. When I worked ambulance dispatch, we kept the recordings for 30 days... it's pretty much standard. Speaking from a photographers aspect and photography laws: we can photograph anyone or anything in public with or without their permission. That's right... even if we are walking down the sidewalk photographing or video taping you asking me not to video or photograph you, I can keep right on video recording and photographing. It then becomes an issue of what I do with those photos/recordings. I can post them with or without your permission if it is "news worthy". I can not on the other hand, sell those photos of you for profit, etc. in a non news media format. Point being... as newguyinsac (who isn't new any more...wink wink nudge nudge) stated... "If you're fearful of being seen doing something, perhaps you should rethink your actions."

Hi Lisa... I could be way off base, but I don't think any of the Lavender Angels or the community are complaining. The gist I get is that the Angels love what they do and they and the community they serve wouldn't have it any other way. I guess the key word here is "volunteer". There must be a lot of "absurd" thinking individuals because both the Lavender Angels and the Guardian Angels are pretty active groups. Both seem to be quite effective and enjoy what they do. Like I said... I could be way off base so any Midtowners or Angels feel free to jump in here and help us out.

Kati's my idol... I admit it. ;-) I don't think many folks realize the skill that goes into some of these shots. We were talking about Kati's shot of the back of the skulled mirror (above) in our CAMPhoto Club group last night. Just so you're aware of what it takes to create a shot like that, here is part of the discussion in the forum: "Kati selected aperture priority mode for this shot and cranked that aperture open to f/6.3. Her ISO was at 250 and that forced a shutter speed of 1/2500 or 0.004s. What dramatized that was her use of her 300mm long lens and as you notice in this photo it yielded a very shallow and specific depth of field. Everything in the foreground and background is very soft, but her subject, the skulled back of the mirror, was sharp and clear". That is what makes Kati a true Maverick.

Cement trucks began arriving early Friday morning at 3308 3rd Ave., the expansion site of Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. They were busy at work laying the foundation for the new expansion, one that the food bank's President, Blake Young is "ecstatic" about. Blake stated that he and the board of directors, through good stewardship of funds, waited seven years for this day.

Blake stood outside the fence at the site Friday morning and looked on as the cement was poured and a snazy laser guided machine and workers leveled the cement that would be the foundation of a legacy for a community.

This is what Young had to say: "This project, in particular, is years in the making. The board of directors and myself based this project on a community needs assessment. Through our strategic plan we put together, we found that education programs for children and adults, job skills training, and a really important parent education program, we felt that we were at capacity in our current center. So through this strategic plan we decided to take the next step, which would be to build out these four in particular programs, build this center which would allow us to serve close to triple the amount of people. For us it was really about helping the moms and dads, it was about helping people gain jobs through technology training, and it was about really helping kids realize high school and college through one on one training and technology programs.

"Our hope is that a lot of people will benefit from this. We've had a great response from the community, We feel that we are part of the community. And this was brought on because the community had a huge demand for our services.

"Our objective is to cement ourselves once again, we've been here 40 years, for the long term and as the economy and the community changes, we'll change along with it, and this gives us the opportunity to be here in perpetuity and continue to grow our programs.

"It will house an adult education center, a children's' education center, a senior education center, and an expansion of our Mother Baby Program. Adjacent to the building will be what we call the Food Bank Farm, which will be a five thousand square foot farm for the adults and children of the center. Phase two will be a remodel of the existing center. The farm, even though a small for a real farm, will produce food and vegetables that will go right into our food assistance program where we do mobile distributions.

"We are ecstatic. What it really is, it is a gift from the community to allow us and to give us what we need to be able to do this. But really it's about the community having confidence in us; delivering quality programs that aren't a reflection of government funding. The community really owns this; they're the ones that step up and donate to our programs. It's just a result of a lot of hard work.

"A real big shout out and thanks to the community for giving us the confidence and support to run and operate really effective and relevant

Rhonda... I imagine, with your deep involvement, you were at the White House Conference a couple of years ago at the Convention Center. In a gang awareness breakout session, I believe it was the captain of LAPD's gang division talked to us about the very successful gang program they started. The numbers were quite impressive. In certain areas, prior to the program, they were having gang related homicides every night. After implementation of the program, those homicides numbers started dropping rapidly. Their tactic was literally employing the gang leaders. I would have to dig deep for my notes, but I'm sure a google search or even contact LAPD's gang division would be worth the effort. Though details escape me, I recall the program being very positive. As long as efforts are ongoing, it would be great to see those efforts funneled into a proven and working program.

As our friend, Matthew Keys (aka: Radio Matthew) will sometimes accuse me of being "snarky"... I have to be a bit snarky here and share a personal note from this story that some of you may be interested in.

In the course of covering this story, Shawki Moore (KOVR overnight cameraman) and myself had an interesting encounter with the owners of this business. Shawki and I cover a lot of stories together at night and it has been our experience, that when the cops catch the perp and recover the stolen goods, the business owners are usually very elated, grateful and very willing to go on camera and talk with us sharing how thankful they are for the police support and protection.

Not only were the owners uncooperative, they were quite upset that we were covering the story and didn't want us to use photos and video of their store. We explained that this was a "news event" and story isn't about them, it's about the good police work and the criminal that was captured and their valuables being recovered and returned. Not quite threatening, they strongly encouraged us not to cover this story. We then explained to them that such posturing causes us as journalists to become curious as to what they are hiding and what is the story behind the story. The store's primary product is sales of used cell phones. Shawki and I both had our suspicions, but we'll let you play with that in your mind.

Ah...great observation Midtown. If you take a look at past articles from myself, Kati Garner and few others, we do a lot of collaborating and contribute news content to different citizen based news outlets as well as "mainstream" media. Rather than duplicating the entire article, we will link back to our site(s) which SacPress graciously allows us to do. We have a good relationship w/ SacPress, working in cooperation with them, not competition. Ben and crew at SacPress have no intentions of being an Action/Breaking news agency... on the other hand, at SacMav and Maverick Photography, that is our full intention. In collaborating w/ SacPress and keeping in the spirit of there intentions, desires and target "audience", we deliver "breaking/action" news content to SacPress that impacts the "grid". We know the "negative news" can get tiresome and toxic (so to speak), so we do try not to share too much of it here, but just what is relevant and interesting to folks in the Downtown/Midtown areas. For those who do want action news overload, they can stay connected to our SacMav twitter and bookmark our SacMav.com site. We are fully aware that is not everyones cup of tea, hence the reason you will only see smatterings of it from us here at SacPress. I hope that brings some clarity and answers your question. Please feel free to email me directly at ed@maverickphotography.us if there are any direct concerns or questions.

pk3 and Michele... while people weren't running around, the situation was becoming quite dangerous and potentially volatile. I was there from 6pm till the mall was clear. As 7pm came around it was so densely packed with people that had there been any emergency of any kind the situation would have become very ugly and potentially deadly. People/crowds can be quite calm while they are unaware that the structural integrity of the floor they are standing on is weakening. Their calmness doesn't mitigate the fact that potential mortal danger could have been looming. Sometimes calmness and lack of urgency can be a bad thing... in this case, many people were not taking fire and police officials seriously and felt that they just came in to ruin their party. After I got to a safe location to film and photograph on the lower level, people around me were very upset with officials until I told them "it is serious... there is potential structural issues and you could watch thousands of people swallowed up in a floor collapse in front of you". While this was calm and no one didn't get hurt, I don't think it can be stressed enough that this was a dangerous situation.

UPDATE: I just did a little research on dispatch information for the incident and found some info that underscores the potential hazard this was. Dispatch information was that the food court floor IS cracking. Incident command, when on scene, requested an additional 4 ambulances and 3 additional engines in addition to the response that had already been dispatched (I couldn't find that info).

Stated perfectly, Liltreasures. My wife and I were there in the food court. My former firefighter sense kicked in when the upper level became a sea of people body to body (literally) and I grabbed my wife and headed for the escalator to get out. Though it was supposed to be a fun and beautiful "flash mob" musical event, it was way over publicized. When my wife and I got near the food court around 5:45pm, it was already packed and we knew (as they say) the jig was up. So, there was no malice on any ones part; if anything, it shows how hungry our society is for fun and spontaneous musical happenings like this. People like the idea and social media did it's job... perhaps too well. Here is how last night's "flash mob" event was supposed to go down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXh7JR9oKVE

As an action news photo journalist, I'm in the field with law enforcement officers almost every day and night. I have personally witnessed countless situations where this less-lethal approach has been used to subdue unruly and threatening subjects. Before tasers, officers would have to physically engage and use brute force to bring these people under control and at times, even have to shoot the suspect due to the lethal and threatening situation. This video is a perfect scenario of how tasers were effectively used at an incident in South Sacramento. The young man had just learned from his sister, via phone, that his brother was shot and killed by deputies in a domestic disturbance situation. His brother had turned on deputies and in that situation, the deputy being attacked had to shoot and kill the person. When this brother arrived on scene, just outside the police perimeter, understandably incensed, he recklessly sped up in his vehicle, exited and began engaging deputies. I think this effectively demonstrates how law enforcement in our local area are able to take a very bad situation and bring it under control with no one getting hurt. By the way, due to the situation, the subject in this video was only detained while he calmed down and not charged. Sgt. Tim Curran tells the story in this video: http://vimeo.com/17815939

That is a great question.... and is there an answer? From a personal perspective and seeing everything first hand, I don't think we can put the blame of loss and "too much" on SacPD for this one. My wife works in the area, and I was very glad to see the level of protection and consideration given to the area employees, business owners, traffic and pedestrians. It was truly believed that the suspect was in the building. He was encountered by a couple of people, witnesses saw him and no one saw him exit the parking structure. This was so uncanny... while picking my wife up from work there in the area last week, my wife and I had discussed how scary and horrific it would be if someone did get up in one of the parking structures with a gun. Routinely, while at these incidents, I will hear people who were forced to evacuate complaining about overkill, and police doing too much, but as people evacuated the buildings and area, they all seemed relieved at the police presence and course of action. I think the blame on this has to fall on the individual who set this ball in motion. Fact is... he did enter the structure, ...he did have a gun, ...multiple people felt unsafe and threatened. But that still leaves us with your question, MyQuest, "when is it too much?" ...and further than that, who can really answer that question?

Maybe Mr. Leong from SacPD will jump in here and give us the Police Department's perspective.

They won’t let employees go to their offices and are holding them in the lobby.”

There were unconfirmed reports that the suspect has a history of mental illness issues and a criminal history with firearms.

Roads have been closed in the area to facility law enforcement staging and equipment as well as community safety. 7th Street has been shut down at P Street, while Q Street has been shut down at 9th Street.

Sacramento (Oak Park), CA | What do you get when mix great coffee, food and Rockabilly? Tess & Hip Trash at Old Soul 40 Acres.

It was nearly standing room only, or dancing room only, when you entered Old Soul at 40 Acres Friday night. Now the new coffee house for the new international terminal at Sacramento International Airport, Old Soul hosted "Tess & Hip Trash" Friday night as customers and fans took in the Rockabilly tunes, fine coffee and great eats.

It wasn't long after the first set of music started that toes were tapp'en, heads were bobb'en and feet were danc'en to the tunes and elegant voice of Tessie Marie.

Per the band's web site, "Tessie Marie met her bandmates in prison.... no they weren't doing time, they were playing music for the inmates as part of a blues society project to educate juvenille offenders, real "Jailhouse Rock". Part of this gig was a songwriting contest that had bandleader/guitarist Paris Clayton write and record songs using the young inmates lyrics. One of those songs "Life", is on the new CD. When the group recorded this song Paris was so impressed with Tess's killer vocals that he asked her to record some other songs he had written. And the rest, as they say, is history.

"Blues, Soul, and Roots Rock influenced original tunes and heartfelt covers, all done in a smart, unique, and sometimes humorous style Tess is backed by a group of veteran pros who have played with a long list of legendary artists. Produced and recorded by Paris Clayton, with bassist Allie Marcel, and "Ratatat Pat" Balcom on Drums."

The quartet ended with a rousing second set but the full house at Old Soul begged for more. Tess and company kicked in with an encore set that raised the roof and had most of the attendees on their feet.

Old Soul at 40 Acres regularly hosts local bands on Friday evenings. Be sure to follow their Twitter (@OldSoulCo) to keep informed.

Whoa...I have to jump in on this one. Not aimed personally at all, but lack of understanding and knowledge of details brings comments like this. As an action media team, we monitor police and fire calls very closely and move when they do; so we not only hear, but also see our law enforcement and fire in action every day and all night. From our regular observation, "domestic violence [DV] and other violent crimes" calls are considered priority. Almost without exception, when we hear a DV call go out our violent situation, we hear and see multiple officers responding right away, code 3 (lights and siren). The very rare instances that they don't, is when the resources (thanks to budget cuts) are totally tapped and no officers are available to respond. Even then, the dispatchers attempt to "cross sector" (pull officers from other areas) or request mutual aid form other departments.

In this protest situation, what you don't see in Brandon's photos (because the pics are near the end of the situation) is that the intersection at one point was filled with protesters. They had tents in the middle of the intersection as well as people on hospital and ambulance gurneys. Incidents like this require a large law enforcement response as they have a great potential to escalate very quickly. Law enforcement must show a large presence rapidly in an attempt to preempt any violent situations.

I hope that sheds some light. Again...that is based on our experience and what we see and hear every single day and night.
