I knew there were cuts in the budget, I didn't realize they planned to completely eliminate funding! The state has priorities all wrong. Public transportation in this state has always been the first thing to go and it's a damn shame that, just when it seemed more emphasis was being placed on public transit, it is being thrown to the curb yet again. Indeed the city has discussed the sanctioning of these settlements, because they are going to be there, in order to police them for drugs and avoid excessive pollution. These cities have been around for a long time and yes, people of all types (families, druggies, young adults just kicked out of the system) find a home in them. What to do about it? It's hard to say. But as William said, we can't pretend they don't exist anymore. And as programs that can help these folks are cut, and more people find themselves in this situation, the cities will grow. TV broadcasts especially have to offer a product that people will buy (watch) so that it's profitable for them to run the program. Unbiased reporting is difficult if not impossible to find, so what you have to do is watch and read information that originates from multiple points of view and make your own decisions.
