Have had dinner, lunch and even a office party (upstairs) at Iron since it opened. The food is very good and the prices are reasonable. $1 PBR all the time and no corkage are a big plus. There were some early quirks with the service, but these have been fixed. Wonderful atmosphere. I'm hooked.

Just had dinner there this evening - good food, nice people, and a good price. We had a dinner for two with plates of beef and chicken and two separate plates of veggies and noodles, and also two bowls of rice - all for $25. And by sitting at the counter you can get two separate flavored broths instead of sharing one flavor at a table for two. Dinner also included ice cream and green teas were $1 with refills.

At least according to Billee Bordisso, they picked the name because at the time there was a national campaign to restore Old Ironsides--schoolchildren were asked to contribute a nickel to the cause. The owners were looking for a name, and a school kid suggested Old Ironsides. I don't think there was a direct connection to Thomas Ryan's nautical career.

I pour Railbridge at Vinoteca and recommend it always. Revolution is going to be a stopping place for the Nov 8th slow food/bike ride the 1st annual Sacramento Tweed Ride a very different sort of bicycle ride.

She is a very honorable person, and if only she hadn't had to leave office because of the constant threats by right wing morons and others, we might have avoided the current mayoral mess... She was one of the great leaders in this town, unassuming, learned, and always compassionate...
The presentation of the Charter Committee findings and analysis has been consistant at each of the 3 meetings I attended. And that I find admirable. The comparisons they made of the existing Charter, to the Balloted offering and potential alternative was clearly expressed with a distinction of fairness and with extra consideration to remain unbaised. I found the meetings to be informative and thought provoking. Clearly a voter can see that the 2010 Stong Mayor initiative on the ballot creates an imbalance of power that would not serve the residents. If a revisions is to be had, a collaborative effort will produce an outcome for the city that works for everyone.

It was really nice seeing her there. I don't know her but she really did have a calming, approachable, welcoming sense about her. It's hard to explain but I got real good vibes from her.

I requested papers and none was givin i was also told that I would not recive after care services. I have 3 children 2,6,9. today i was told after only being ther a day that they wer not gonna pay for my stay and still no paper work. now after a week of the new school year my children have to change schools, and im forced to have to stay at another shelter with my children and stiil no answer fromsaint john shelter. Lutherian says they never agreed to such a thing who's ever lyin my kid's are the one's who suffer.thats why I thank God everyday for weomen empowerment they see me as a person not just another number or a face for donation. Even through all this they are the one constant in such a trying time. But i pray for st. john's that they gain love understanding and compation for the women and children not just the numbers, promotions and donations.
The balcony curmudgeons are my favorite muppet characters. I hope, in the future, to offer some need-based scholarships, and if you send me an email, I'll contact you if/when that happens. I've made a genuine effort to price my workshops fairly. For example, my UCLA extension courses run $575. Novel manuscript consultations are usually a few thousand.

In New Mexico, I did some web work for the Senior Writer's Outreach Project, which ran workshops from a local Senior Center. There might be a similar program at work here in Sacramento. If I hear of any, I'll let you know.

Sacramento Bee book club features local and visiting authors as does the Sacramento chapter of the National Kidney Foundation, which has its annual lunch in November. Amicus Books in Marysville is a writer's haven and a number of local book stores do book readings. We also have a growing community of small publishers, agents and book packagers in the area who help with everything from concept, coaching and editing to design and printing services. I'm sure most of these groups could use all the help they can get. You can find many of these people on the Writers Who Wine site on Facebook.

I'm not surprised, and in fact, am delighted to hear writing is thriving in Sacramento. I know the poetry community is strong, and I admire the organizational ability and efforts of the folks at the Sacramento Poetry Center, who seem tireless in their efforts to promote local writers. What I haven't seen so far, with the exception of California Lectures, which clearly brings venerable writers to Sacramento, is a regular prose reading series geared more toward showcasing local writers. If one already exists, I'd be happy to learn more about it, and help support/sustain it if I can. If not, I have some ideas about how/where to begin one. I can be reached via my website or via Facebook if anyone would like to start a dialogue about this and/or writing in general.

Actually Sacramento already has a vibrant writer community.

I have attended two writer gatherings in two days - Sacramento Press Club Freelance Social Journalism panel discussion where more than 40 attended and Writers Who Wine at Scandals where more than 20 shared their progress. Sacramento Press puts on some wonderful workshops. UC Davis Extension offers a plethora of writing courses and is presenting a workshop on how to write about your mother later this month. I know of a number of writer meet-ups and critique groups who help each other word-by-word. Urban Hive hosts freelance and writer events and I just heard about an indie publishing seminar going on in Roseville later this month. I have attended no fewer than four book launches by local authors over the summer and two more were announced last night. Local authors have had a great deal of national success in a variety of genres.

The word is out. Sacramento writers are thriving and we welcome you to the literal (and possibly literary) capital of the state.
