The bulk of Jay's votes came from all over. Kennedy only received 33% of the vote... this article make it sound like it was close. And as far as representing Oak Park, Jay spent years volunteering and running the Food Bank in the middle of Oak Park.
My freashmen class had over 700 students, graduatiung were 245 maybe. We had one of the highest drop out rates I think the district ever recorded. One of the highest in the state. The school was failing baddly and when the Board presented the Teachers Union with 5 million dollars in grant funding (obtained by Jay Schenirer) to reform Sac High they turned down the offer to work together on school reform. Instead tthe Union decided to allow the schol continue to fail. So if we want to start assigning blame for the failure of Sac High we as a community need to own up the fact that WE failed that school and those students, tearcher, parents and administrators. The board is 5 people, it took a village to allow sac high to fall into a state of total and utter colapse. We each own a piece of its failure.
We have a High School. Sac High, like it or not it is putting more students in to 4 year schools than it did before. not by percentage either. Before Sac high was turned over it was the worst school you could think of, drugs and violence ruled the school. Anyone here go to Sac High just prior to it becoming St. Hope? I did! That school was CRAP. My last year someone was stabbed 17 times with a screwdriver! Turing it over to St. Hope was a sad day, but the school administration and the teachers couldn't fix it, nor did they want to. They tied the hands of the board.
I think Knapp's comment is very sad on many levels. It attempts to belittle the two years of hard work from a group of kids we should all be proud of.
