Great points .Education is key.If you know how to ride a bike with a fixed gear well you don't need a break , If you get a fixie just to be a style train jumper, it becomes obvious pretty quickly that it's too much for your skill set. Cops can tell if you can't ride the bike well and they definitely notice if you flaunt traffic laws. Serves you right if you get a ticket for no break if you draw their attention.
Funny story...When I was racing (years ago) we used fixies as trainers to build endurance and regular cadence . I used to ride my fixie to work at a little coffee house and leave it unlocked in the doorway. This jerk tried to steal it and was pitched off the bike in seconds...Hilarious!

Education is key here. People don't understand that you can stop without brakes. Skateboards don't have brakes.... Ride a fixed gear and maybe you will see. I like to ride with no brakes because the PD has never been able to return a stolen bike to me. Ever see someone try and steal a fixie? HA! I will never put a brake on my fixed gear. I have bikes with brakes and they serve their purpose. My fixed gear serves its purpose.

I ride a brakeless track bike in sacramento. i have never been stopped or ticketed, for anything. i stop at red lights. i use arm signals while changing lanes. i can stop my bike when i need to, plain and simple. i don't put myself in situations where im going 30mph 10 feet before an intersection. that would be dumb. i am not. and in those situations where something pops up 10 feet in front of you, if i'm able to aviod it, i do, and if not, i probably would have hit it anyway even with brakes.

anyway, as cfnmoney said as well, i really don't see the difference between brakeless fixed gears and brakeless coaster brakes, they are both the same idea, fixed gears just require a bit more skill.

stop ticketing for this. this city has much bigger problems that it should be focusing on instead of discouraging a 'cool way' (for many people) of alternative transportation.

I find it more fun to ride without a brake, as well as it is more comfortable to ride without a brake on my handlebars because there are more availible hand positions.

Very well-written article! I'd make one minor correction. The Bible of Araki was silk-screened BEFORE they were fired. Even if you don't see the text underneath the top page, Araki did silk-screen all the 200 some pages when they were leather hard and then fired. She made the Bible series as a continuous dialogue with his brother who died young. He left her a torn bible which he read over and over. Araki's work is most beautiful even if they are teared (Black Bible) or buried in the Sand (Sand Bible).

What is the difference of a kid learning how to ride a bike with coaster breaks and a grown adult riding a fixie? Coster breaks require you to petal backwards. Fixies require you to stop petaling. sounds like the same thing to me. No changing gears; a 6 year old doesn't have gears on their bike. Single speed bikes dont have gears. A bmx bike doesn't have gears. A lot of bmx bikers don't use breaks. isn't there something else sac PD and other police departments can do beside this "stuff."

Union Pacific uses the "Green Goat" in yards: it was at Roseville for a while, and I saw several in operation in southern California near Ontario earlier this year. Both Union Pacific and BNSF use the GEVO, which is a freight locomotive (they are geared for more traction than passenger locomotives and heavier loads than switchers.)

Great step forward on the locomotive side. In a few months, we'll see if the on-board engineers will be equally enthusiastic about performance ease and reliability. Hopefully, they will.

I ride the San Joaquin about once a month. Now Caltrans and Amtrak need to concentrate on services and amenities in its passenger cars on that route. For one, the California Cars serve the shorter runs such as the Capitol Route quite well, but alterations are needed to make them more comfortable and suitable for the long distance trips from Sacramento to Bakersfield for example.

Another is their ill-informed decision to position the snack car in the middle of the passenger cars, which causes major boarding de-training problems. Waiters (when they had waiters) warned them about that, but management ignored those valid concerns. Attempts to "manage" passengers and full car reservations are two other factors which cause customer dissatisfaction.

Train travel down the Valley is still the way to go, but there is much room for improvement.

Watering two or three times a week helps your lawn develop a deeper root system and can survive better with less frequent waterings. In this current heat, don't mow as often, and allow your grass to create its own shade so the ground dries out more slowly.

Good story. Several front yards in my neighborhood have gone lawn-less the past two years and look much better using stone, plants and flowers. Some have water features. Lawn is a major water waster and it's high maintenance. You have to mow, edge, fertilize and put chemicals on it to kill bugs and disease. With water meters a fact of life in over-populated California, we all need to look at alternative landscapes and be mindful of brainless neighbors who have their sprinklers running every day on their water-guzzling lawns.

There will always be an element of "I have to be different" than the mainstream (easier) way of doing things. Gears and brakes are mainstream still and I persanally think you can do more and go farther with less effort with gears and this fits me and my bike everywhere lifestyle.

What bothers me with the fixed gear phenomena is the inability to care for the safety of others. Alot of new cyclists want to go in this direction despite the added dangers of the brakeless/fixed gear trend and their inability to actually control a fixed/brakeless bike.

We should I feel evolve into caring and being more not less responsible for our fellowman and the brakeless lead violates this evolution.

Plus I dont think it improves the car and bike relationshp on the street either.

I've been a commute rider for about 15 years now, and a bicycle has been my primary and often sole source of transport for about a decade. I don't get the fixie thing, but maybe that is because I have been hit 4 times during that period by car drivers, and honestly, it was my brakes that saved me from hospitalization twice. I understand the allure of "doing it different", but the fixie hipsters need to realize that the CVC that protects the cyclist also applies to the cyclist. That means brakes.

There is an element of counter-culture mentality to the whole thing. It is youth-oriented probably because as we get older most of us do fewer stupid things, just part of the maturation process. But I digress, the fixed gear bike is modeled after a track bike. Track bikes have no brakes beause they are raced in a velodrome. Velodromes are oval steeply banked tracks with a smooth surface, absent of stop signs, cars and people.
Fixed gear bikes generally look cooler than the modern road bikes at least to me and my peers it seems. However the riders that are protecting their image by riding brakeless are hurting the rest of us by painting this uncooperative, defiant picture of cyclists. We are losing respect from drivers and pedestrians who don't see any of this history or art theory. They see a bunch of kids breaking a simple straight-forward law. To them and even most cyclists this is just stupid. This loss of respect creates a dangerous environment on the road for everybody. A true purist would know the laws through and through and make an effort to respect them and fellow road cohabitants.

Yeah, me too. Why open yourself to the cops and give them a reason to stop you? Sounds like a buzz kill and a sure-fire way to be late. Not to mention the time wasted clearing the ticket. There are stylish ways to incorporate a front brake into a fixie. Some of the minimalism is lost. But you can go fast, knowing that you can stop suddenly if you have to, and no one will notice. At any rate, if these fix-it tickets generate revenue and weed the gene pool then by all means: to hell with brakes.

I wonder, will cars with no headlights catch on? Yeah maybe some of my driving comrades will go for a sleek, stealth look, take out their headlights, and put black anodized plates over the holes.
I am replying to my own comment, as a friend at the bike kitchen provided me with the answer. You must apply pressure to the pedals to create friction that will stop the tires from spinning. Sounds like it isn't very safe and may cause damage to the bike.

Does anybody know what, if any, kind of damage that causes?

Many moons ago I rode a fixed gear--for training. It requires you to not only pay more attention to your surroundings and use more control, but builds incredible muscles due to the resistance of stopping/slowing. The risk is considerable, but once you have the knack it is not that different than a regular bike.

Now I ride a bike without a seat--THAT builds real power!

We have signed copies of the book available. You can call us at 916-941-6896.
While an interesting and unique look at Lincoln's presidency the book is definitely relevant for many reasons as mentioned by oldpup above. This book is timely as Sacramento is hosting several Lincoln exhibits including "With Malice Toward None."

I was noting the similarities between Lincoln and Bush, in terms of public perception, while the Iraq War was going its worst. The fact is that leaders are not remembered for how people felt about them when times were dark any more than for the end-results of their decisions. If present and future American presidents occasionally put our might behind the global drive for liberty, and this helps cement a global desire for it (most recently exemplified in Iran), then Lincoln's experience of being reviled while serving and lionized afterwards will not be unique.

We both look forward to this race every year. In the 10 years we've competed in this race, we've won it twice and placed 2nd five times! It is such a joy doing this race every year. SPCA, please provide more doggy water locations at the event. Also, poop bags would be greatly appreciated. I suppose I should better articulate my point by saying it is the way the terms "gays," "blacks," and "jews" are stated and used. I would never refer to a group of people as "whites." It simply sounds derogatory. If referring to a group of people, I prefer, at the very least, to say "white people" or "black people." See the difference? It's not the term, but the way in which it is used.

LGBT is such an ugly acronym, in my opinion. I can never get myself to use it. I also think it confers a false solidarity among these groups. Let's be honest about male domination in our society: if gay men were granted the sexual prerogatives that men in Classical Greek times had, sexual orientation would be a non-issue. (On second thought, maybe this is too pessimistic, but there is a grain of truth to it).

I guess I could use gays and lesbians to be more inclusive, but for me the term lesbians feels too sexualized. "Lesbianism" plays such a big role in pornography. The "male gaze" in this regard acts as a kind of veil that hides the experience of real lesbians.

What about the term queer? It's a good word. It's a fun word to say. It has a good mouth feel, as it were. Do you think it is culturally acceptable for non-homosexuals to use the term?

This is not a special right...the Supreme Court had no other option but to allow previous gay marriages to stand. While I have not read the actual decision, no doubt their reasoning was based on the constitution prohibition from enacting, "ex post facto" laws or any court decisions which would have the same effect as enacting an ex post facto law.

At the time of the marriages, it was legal for gays to marry. Post election, it is not. I don't see how the court could have invalidated the previous marriages. It's a rather simple constitutional issue, you cant retroactively outlaw an action or behavior that was legal at the time of the act.

Even though the above argument has the threadbare quality of a talk radio staple, which it is, it does point to a fundamental problem with the argument that gay marriage is a civil right. At the end of the day, advocates for gay marriage are asking society to expand the notion of marriage to include gay relationships. Since gay relationships have become weaved into the fabric of our society, it seems, from my point of view, utterly uncharitable not to grant gay relationships the official sanction that gay men and women are asking for. However, a very tiny majority of Californians don't see things this way, thus here we are.

That said, I believe Prop 8 is an unjust law because it enshrines into the state constitution a view of an issue that is in the process of evolving. The people who devised prop 8 know this. Prop 8 is tantamount to a scorched earth policy of retreating soldiers. Gay marriage is marching forward, and they can't stop it, so they are just going to make things as difficult as they can in the meantime.

According to the U.S. Gen. Accountability Office in a letter to former Sen. Majority leader Bill Frist in 2004, it stated originally citing 1,049 federal statutory provisions that exclude unmarried couples in a 1997 report; in 2003 they updated that figure to 1,138.

I am not sure which figures have precedence--I don't know what Lambda's Legal analysis is based on or how recent it is. Really any of these figures are significant.

This is what CA family code Section 297.5 (a) states regarding domestic partnerships:

"Registered domestic partners shall have the same rights, protections, and benefits, and shall be subject to the same responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law, whether they
derive from statutes, administrative regulations, court rules, government policies, common law, or any other provisions or sources of law, as are granted to and imposed upon spouses."

"1,400 basic rights that are automatically afforded married couples that are specifically omitted from domestic partnerships" that bbbbmer is referring to, from what I understand, are limitations created by the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

DOMA defines marriage as between man & woman only, impacting more than 1,138 federal laws and programs in which marital status is a factor as of 2003 (This figure is cited by the U.S. Gen. Accountability Office).

Something no one has mentioned yet is how Prop. 8 affects a marriage involving an intersex person(someone who can physically identify with both sexes). In California domestic partnerships are limited only to same-sex couples or couples over the age of 62, and as of yesterday marriage can still only be between a man and a woman in the state.

It is at least *strange* that Ted Olsen, who was so very much aligned with Ken Starr during the Clinton impeachment, and was the Bush/Cheney administration's Solicitor General, would insinuate himself in this cause of action, which has been lambasted by those who actually litigated against Prop 8 and have been at the forefront of this struggle since its inception. It is suspected that this Federal challenge is an attempt to prematurely sabotage the issue of marriage equality before the Supreme Court while it remains in right wing hands, for Justices Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas would likely weigh against more evolved opinion,, though how Kennedy would decide remains in question, especially given his authorship of the Colorado case and other issues involving equal protection,, which is paramount in defeating Prop 8.

Benefits afforded domestic partnerships depend on recognition of those rights by institutions, public and private, that honor them. There is nothing in the law compelling an employer, for example, to recognize DP's as they would marriages.

Furthermore, the '1,138 Federal laws and programs' you cite differ with Lambda Legal's analysis of statutory benefits conferred by marriage when compared to DP's.

There is still a question whether DOMA trumps recognition of one state's marriage equality statute with another, which issue at least two cases, one from Massachusetts, one from New Hampshire, are currently taking up Federally.

There remain vast differences between DP's and marriage on a variety of fronts, and it was ridiculously ill-informed and insensitive for yesterday's Court, or anyone else, for that matter, majority to assert equivalence.
