Project61 Update: "Feast for the Forgotten" This Saturday, November 20 at 2:00pm under the 12th Street Bridge. Saturday is the annual "Feast for the Forgotten" Thanksgiving meal and gathering for those who meet up once a month under the 12th Street bridge. This monthly event is called Project61 and was started by local rapper and motivational speaker Minister RMB in the fall of 2004 with some friends. RMB says, "Everybody wants to know they are valued and loved...regardless of their current situation or background. People desperately need love. Love with no agenda. We have all experienced times of brokenness, failure, loneliness, betrayal, abandonment....and it was during those ti
Have you ever discovered a place that made you say "everybody should see this place"? I did on a recent drive down J Street. What caught my eye was the shop owner putting some of her items outside for passerbys to get a visual and a taste of what could be in the store. I quickly found myself parking right in front so that I could get a better view of what I was hoping I was seeing. What the shop owner was putting out were items of furniture that I hadn't seen in a long time, ever since I was a kid. After perusing all the fun things outside, I couldn't wait to go inside. I was like a big kid waiting to go into a candy store. The moment I walked into the store I was greeted by Cheri the sho
CASH FOR CANDY AND SUPPORT FOR OUR TROOPS Local Pediatric Dental Office Takes a Stand Against Sweets this Halloween FOLSOM, CA – What’s a ghost’s favorite candy? BOO-ble gum of course! One area pediatric dental group is redefining the phrase “put your money where your mouth is.” This Halloween, trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Kids Care Dental Group of Folsom and receive $1 per pound. The doctors at Kids Care are leading this anti-decay movement by giving away cash and toothbrushes in exchange for cavity-provoking candy. The candy will then be sent to our troops overseas via Operation Gratitude (www.opgratitude.com) “We want kids to have fun….but we also want kids to
Once a month, every month like clockwork since 2005, hundreds of people get together under the 12th street bridge for a love-in. Yes you heard right, and this is probably the first time you have ever heard of it. In fact it happens this Saturday, October 30th at 2:00pm. People come from all over the area dressed in tie-dye and many other forms of clothing, depending on the weather, to create an atmosphere where "Love Wins". This monthly event is called Project61 and was started by local rapper and motivational speaker Minister RMB in the fall of 2004 with some friends. RMB says, "Everybody wants to know they are valued and loved...regardless of their current situation or background. Pe
If Elvis Presley is the King of rock, and Michael Jackson the King of pop, then Andreas Nottebohm would have to be "hands down" the King of metal art. There are many artists using metal today, but Andreas' art has more than set the standard. He has raised the bar to the point that very few, if any who come after him, will ever achieve his success. In the category of art known as "cutting edge," Nottebohm's creations are not only cutting edge, but also over the top and out if this world so much, that NASA has commissioned him to do various projects. Knowing that all that glitters is not gold, Andreas can put a Midas touch on aluminum that can be compared to precious metals, and quite o
When I was in high school I had a real problem with religion. Why? As a teenager I couldn't get a grip in my spirit why "churches" had to spend so much money on buildings when there was so much need in the lives of people. It seemed like every time my girlfriend took me to church all they were seeking was money for their new building projects. Maybe those building projects of yesteryear are to help people today for such a time as this. Let me explain. It wasn't until I was 23 years old that I came to the truth that in the word and eyes of God the church is not a building but rather the church is the people who believe in Him. But believing in God also means believing that Jesus Christ i
In case you missed this earlier, let me clarify the newly coined term "greenwash". If whitewashing is to 'gloss over or cover up a crime or a scandal', then "greenwashing" would be the use of money in an attempt to gloss over or cover up a crime or scandal. When our family read that the new wing at the Crocker Art Museum was going to be named The Teel Family Pavilion, we became unglued. This is the same family that owns the Raley’s Supermarket chain of stores. Joyce Raley Teel’s $13 million dollar donation enabled them the honor of having the new addition named after them. As you know from my previous articles about Raley’s and the Teel’s, a crime was committed against my father and our
Let me clarify the newly coined term "greenwash". If whitewashing is to 'gloss over or cover up a crime or a scandal', then "greenwashing" would be the use of money in an attempt to gloss over or cover up a crime or scandal. One year ago today on January 12th 2009, my friend and reporter Leann Lopez hand delivered nine letters with a "hungry4justice" card to the receptionist desk at City Hall. Mayor Kevin Johnson and all off the other city council members should have personally received their copy. Maybe the City Council didn't think this issue was important enough or they didn't want to believe this story to be true because Leann did not get one response by phone call or email about the
I just went to the Sacbee website and sure enough, Mike Teel was made CEO of Raley's. Now lets see what happens to the Good Eats place.
I walked into the Pete's coffee shop at Alhambra and Folsom Blvd on Saturday afternoon and saw a friendly familiar face that I recognized. It was none other than Sac Press' Editor in Chief David Barton just enjoying life with a cup of something and a newspaper(of course). I re-introduced myself to him and sat down with my coffee at a table across the room. I really wanted to talk "news" with him but I didn't want to interrupt his down time. As I sat there at my table enjoying that great Pete's coffee, I found myself looking at the building that is kitty-corner from Pete's. It is the old Andiamo restaurant that has been recently updated. This was suppose to be the site of the Good Eats Gro
I woke up this morning thinking "hey, tomorrow is Second Saturday". Of course I am talking about the monthly Art Walk and experience that happens in and around Sacramento's Midtown area. Even though the forecast is calling for some chance of rain, that should be no excuse not to come to midtown and be a part of the monthly festivities and feel the season in the air. Since last Christmas there have been some additions to the monthly event. For one, Midtown is hosting an ice skating rink between K St and L St on 20th St. Tickets: Admission: Adults, $8 Children, $5 Skate Rental: $2 Info Phone: (916) 442-1500 Secondly, artist Michael Kennedy opened the new Kennedy Gallery at 1114 20th St
Occasionally in life you meet someone who has developed such an incredible gift it makes you want to tell everyone else about that person. That is what happened when I ventured into the Sunrise Natural Foods store in Roseville with my girlfriend and she introduced me to a friend of hers that works there. His name is Alden Okie and he is the epitome of the kind of person people need to see and ask advice of when they enter a natural food health store. Alden, a very distinguished looking man in his 50's, is also a very humble and gentle man who probably never sees himself as a superman. But to the people who have come to know and trust his advice, he is a super man to them. I remember the
I have never heard of a newspaper anywhere in the United States that has been so tormented by the truth as I have of the Sacramento Bee. In late 1990 Raley's published and distributed their so-called account of Tom Raley's success story. Then on March 4, 1991, The Sacramento Bee did an article about Raley’s, their success and the man who they had been told and believed had created their success, CEO Chuck Collings. That was the one-two punch that made us come out fighting. What Raley's and the Sacramento Bee wrote were fighting words and we began fighting for the truth. In Raley's history book and the Bee article, Collings was basking in his self proclaimed glory that he was the savior o
When homeless looking man Frank Nordby realized that if what he believed was true, then an incredible injustice had taken place. He felt if a billion dollars could create this horrible injustice maybe it's possible to tip the scales of justice with a little incentive for anyone who would be willing to investigate his story and prove him wrong. So with the David vs Goliath state of mind, Frank began offering a $100,000 dollar reward in his quest for the truth. All anyone had to do was disprove with evidence the following claim by our father Charles Nordby: "I saved Tom Raley's company from going bankrupt" A simple claim with a
This is part two of the story about the homeless looking man that is offering a $100,000 reward to anyone who can disprove one fact and that fact is: Charles Nordby turned Tom Raley’s company around when Raley's was going bankrupt in the early '70s. It was his expertise in the grocery business and his proven security program implemented at Raley's back in 1973 that made Raley’s the success they are today. "There was so much external and internal theft taking place at Raley's back then, they simply could not have stay in business," Nordby said before passing away in 1996. In 1973, Nordby traveled from Sonoma County to have a meeting with Pete Stathos, the president of the now d
There are two things about the man in the picture that you would not believe unless I revealed them to you in this article. First of all, the man in the picture is not homeless. He is my brother Frank Nordby who has attended a couple of the Sacramento Press' workshops with me. It is hard to imagine just by looking at his appearance that this man is not only training to qualify for the Boston Marathon but he is also offering a $100,000 reward in his race for justice. Frank has been running as long as I can remember. In fact I remember him running after me as a child whenever I would pull some 'little brother" gag on him. Frank was able to palm a basketball in high school and was actually
Sacramento is now also known for the "Tent City" for the homeless. That’s okay. If Sacramento, the capitol of the seventh or eighth largest economy in the world has to be the poster child city for the homelessness problem in America, then so be it! Probably every man, woman and child in our area is aware of the growing homeless community. It does not matter where you are in the Sacramento area, homelessness happens. In fact, some of the people interviewed for the stories about our tent city, said "we never dreamed that we would be homeless and in this condition". I have never dreamed of being homeless, have you? Maybe we are next. I come from a very large family and I believe if my world
This Second Saturdays Art Walk will be the first time that Lori Wylie and Terrie Bennett will open their new art gallery to show art lovers what their new generation of metal art looks like. The path that has brought them together through tough and trying times, could be a good example of one of lifes "intersections" where people cross each others paths and find themselves in a whole new direction. Their art seems to be getting better with time and they are transforming their ideas in metal art with each new technique. Lori Wylie and her previous husband, world reknowned artist Doug Wylie, had created their niche in bronze sculpture once they discovered they could take their ceramic tech
Five years ago, Alister Oliver never thought he would be a wanted man for shooting in K Street's Sacramento Art Complex, in fact it was only a few short months ago that he even heard of the Art Complex. Alister is shooting people with his camera and his very quick wit. Alister is the owner of a new photography studio called "Alister....." which is located in the center of the new Sacramento Art Complex. I met Alister while I was helping my girlfriend, artist Lori Wylie at her textured metal art studio located just below his studio at the complex. Alister would come down and put his two cents worth in with humor and some great suggestions into better ways that I might be able to perform my
In Northern California, vineyards, wineries and the wines they produce are a main stay of our economy. One of the elements of creating a successful wine is creating enthusiastic wine tasters who can appreciate all that goes into making wine. Wine tasting is fast becoming one of the "Great American" past times for those in the world famous California wine producing areas. Whether you live here or are just passing through, taking a day to just get away from everything and visiting a winery or two will do wonders for your five senses and the soul. Whenever I would go wine tasting I would always feel inadequate next to someone who appeared to be a true wine connoisseur. The holding of the g
