Camellia Symphony plays beautifully, quietly

The Camellia Symphony Orchestra gave a spirited performance at Memorial Auditorium Saturday night. Conducted by maestro Dr. Allan Pollack, the 86-piece ensemble performed a collection of three works by Bach, Beethoven and Mahler. The collection was dubbed “The Titans” for the power, grandeur and breadth of emotion the compositions typify. Though beautifully performed by the musicians, Pollack’s promise of “sounds so powerful that they will lift you off your seat” was not fulfilled. “It’s a very beautiful building, and it’s old and it’s beautiful from the outside, and it’s historically interesting from the inside,” Pollack said. “But the stage definitely needs some kind of shell. Mountain Lions trounce Nighthawks

The planets and stars aligned with Hornet Stadium Saturday night as the Sacramento Mountain Lions absolutely embarrassed the Omaha Nighthawks 41-3 in front of 20,000 live fans. Omaha’s loss eliminated them from championship game contention and may give Sacramento (4-4) a chance to compete against Las Vegas (5-2) if Omaha can defeat Florida (4-3) next week. Sacramento coach Dennis Green said the Mountain Lions lived up to their potential this game and, playing the way they did, they are as good as any team in the UFL. “This was clearly our best game of the year,” Green said. Right from the coin toss Sacramento did everything right, opening the game with a flea flicker from running back

Dr. Oz brings health program to Sacramento teens

Television personality, author and surgeon Dr. Oz spoke at Luther Burbank High School in South Sacramento Saturday afternoon with the goal of making Sacramento eat healthier and exercise more. HealthCorps, a nationwide movement founded by Dr. Oz, aims to fight obesity by changing the mindsets of young people. The group has now begun programs at Luther Burbank High School and Sacramento Charter High School with funding from the California Walnut Commission. Sacramento County has the third highest obesity rate of the 58 counties in California. Obesity has links to cancer and heart disease, the two leading causes of death in the U.S. Mayor Kevin Johnson, who welcomed Dr. Oz to the stage, sa

The much-anticipated Crocker opens

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony for The Crocker Art Museum Sunday morning, Congresswoman Doris Matsui said what many were feeling: “It’s been a long time coming, but it’s surely worth it.” The expansion to the Crocker has been in planning for more than 10 years and under construction for about three years. A few hundred people crowded together and listened to the speakers, ready to see what was held inside the modern white building of steel and glass that was about to be handed over to the public. More than 14,000 people took the free tour by the day’s end. Citing the (nearly complete) $100 million campaign to fund the project, Mayor Kevin Johnson announced, “To anyone who says Sacramen

Sacramento cleans riverfront

Sacramento rolled up its sleeves and filled trash bags Saturday for the 16th annual Great American River Clean Up led by the American River Parkway Foundation. More than 2,000 people volunteered their time to clear 11,361 pounds of trash and 7,002 pounds of recyclables from 22 waterfront sites. About 47 miles of waterfront were cleaned, including high-traffic sites such as River Bend Park and Discovery Park. The cleanup coincided with California Coastal Cleanup Day, an annual statewide effort led by the California Coastal Commission that has about 80,000 volunteers annually. Sacramento’s participation has nearly doubled since last year. At William B. Pond Park in Carmichael, about 180 vo

This is a really good cause. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is one of the saddest reflections of the human race and a lot of people aren't even aware of it.

It's really cool to see something like this happening in Sac. Especially since 2020 is closer than people realize. These kinds of projects don't materialize overnight.

Conversation about: Camellia Symphony plays beautifully, quietly

I'd say most of the people who attended were 40+, with a lot of them quite a bit older than that. It was raining and the organizers said that often deters people, but they reckoned it only cut attendance by about 100, so either way you're right. Maybe they need to do some kind of extreme ad campaign. Sky-diving + Mahler or something. Get mountain dew to sponsor them, I don't know. Cheers Dane.
