Lanes are only useful if drivers and residents as well as cyclists mind them. Remember that garbage cans, delivery trucks and leaf piles often line the bike lanes in additon to swerving, texting drivers and the always present risk of getting doored. Lanes and associated infrastructure is the right idea but it takes cooperation to make these features safe and therefore viable. There are times when the sidewalk is the safest option and I could care less about pushing some "midtown" pedestrian's nose out of joint when my other option is the ER. I will gladly take my chance with the pedestrian. Having lived downtown for 30+ years, it became apparent many moons ago that cooperation is a lot better than aggravation. I dont aggressively hit the sidewalk as I realize it is mainly for pedestrians. The very idea that people who live downtown (Jennifer, for instance) actually prefer that I drive instead of taking some of their precious sidewalk is almost unbearable and at the very least, pathetic and ignorant . Downtown is a rotten place to drive and could be a great testing ground for bike/ped only thoroughfares, although it appears that logic and reason do not outweigh unfounded feelings of entitlement and selfishness. I too drive and ride, but driving downtown is a fool's errand- it is rarely necessary yet dominates the entire city. As far as the acrimonious comments about cyclists having to use the street or else, well that appears to be a statement from someone who does not ride all that much. for every claim about bike rudeness (often true, but not a rule) there are drivers who blow crosswalks, don't look before opening their doors while parking adjacent to a bike lane, don't signal, speed way beyond anything acceptable for a town with a stop sign every two blocks, talk on the phone and threaten cyclists with their vehicles as well as verbally. speeding cars have little room to slow and adapt to changes in the road ahead but it does not seem to matter as long as they get where they are going. this issue truly is a two a street and stereotyping about "idiots" on bikes really is not all that helpful. If my options are speeding commuters allowing me about two feet of clearance between their car and someone's car door, a leaf pile or other hazards in a bike lane, you can look for me on your sidewalk as long as it is the safer route.

total bummer. I don't believe the names are worth learning quite frankly- it would be a bit embarrassing to tell a wayward visitor to be on the lookout for a sign reading Eggplant or other such drivel. Bad Decisions 1 Sacramentans 0

Looks can be deceiving Mr. Sarcasm. Just because a business remains open does not necessarily imply it is" flourishing". That is not the point however, nor is whether these businesses are flourishing. The problem here is that Fahn and his cronies profess to supporting local businesses (mainly their own) but developed (destroyed) a corner that already had three really well established ones all for their own gain. That corner served as a destination for hanging out, live music, books, records etc. all of which worked together very well. Sounds like something that might be proposed to revive downtown now doesn't it? Now they are all split up and can no longer support each other in that fashion and instead were replaced with a failed lunch area and a cruddy lounge they could have built anywhere. Unless a sports bar is your idea of perfection which very well may be the case, you cannot deny that was a very local corner and therefore an integral part of local life.

Sports bars have to be the dullest, most unimaginative business concept going. 15 televisions all showing espn with the sound off , bud light and popper specials and crap ass music . Maybe some 49er, kings and raider posters to really seal the deal. This is a great space to do something exciting in, what a waste.

My sediment exactly. Mr. Fahn's false affinity for local businesses is reprehensible. I believe this is the same crew of suits (excepting DeVere who has created a great establishment that actually makes sense and fits in very well) that shut down the 15th and L corner that featured Beers Books, Esoteric Records and Capital Garage. I guess those local businesses did not put their "soul into their business" and Wong and Fahn thought it best to uproot them despite the financial strain and interruption of business all in the name of their own profit. Real sweethearts. The thought of these clowns (who actually believed that CPK would be an invigorating addition to the area) determining what downtown needs is enough to turn your stomach.

I live near Old Soul but everytime I go, it is a bit on the disappointing side and I generally opt for the magic of Peets. However, I don't generally buy coffee before boarding a plane either (or much else) for a variety of reasons and Old Soul would be a good local presence I suppose. Most importantly, will these vendors, whomever they may be at the end of this, still insist on doubling the price of everything they sell? Why is airport food so expensive?

you can't compare El Novillero and taco trucks by any stretch. when i want to go spend 15 bucks on an enchilada I will go the former, when i want a cheap ass taco i will patronize the latter. besides, why is it everyone's duty to protect El Novillero? there is no entitlement here. this "let's protect what we have" from change and variety is puzzling. why is this even an issue?

This is ridiculous and frankly, quite embarrassing. Loud music? I have never heard loud music at a taco truck. Can it be any worse than yours or your neighbors dog at 3 a.m.? Or the garbage trucks? People milling around late at night? sounds like one of a hundred bars and nightclubs legally operating right now here in town. God forbid people go out and have some food late at night, but it is perfectly fine to go get ripped? oh yeah, more profit for those who need it least. it's a free market. isn't it? we are missing out an excellent contribution to local food and culture and worse of all, these people are out of work. we want taco trucks!

"The bar will use music to attract a crowd of mature, experienced clientele aged 30 to 50. The idea was to create a place for people who want to have fun and socialize, and who know how to have a good time without causing trouble, he said, adding that people shouldn't have to stop going to dance clubs just because they may no longer be in their 20s. "

Does that sound like a wide variety of people? Didn't think so. It is ironically puerile and stuffy, and is basically saying that unless you are over 30 with some money to blow, beat it kid. "Without causing trouble"? wow! a little morality lesson to go with your vip lounge, eh? I am 40 and that irks me even.
midtown is a s superficial term intended to suggest that somehow midtown is not downtown. it is a somewhat more playful than the term downtown and doesn't have the negative connotations generally associated with downtown. between the freeways and levee=downtown. never heard "midtown" until the late 80s and it still doesn't mean anything, to me at least. Not sure about Oracle's blast on downtown residents but no matter, it's a free country.

Marion, as for your embarrassing quote " I don't believe any of the people spitting nails over this, remember or were actually around Midtown for the years that I've described. "Whodat," it's your arrogance and hostility that are "unqualified." that is unreal. Almost as much as your confounding and preposterous distinction between midtown (a fictitious boundary) and downtown. any sacramentan worth their salt knows midtown only exists in the minds of those who came later or who want to profit from the image of an area not associated with the nefarious connotations of downtown. I am surprised you would buy into that being such a veteran and all. Why does it matter if I did not state where I played? Do you think there is a demographic or geographic difference between the distillery and old I. If you have played both, maybe you can tell us because I never noticed any difference.

And finally, since I "may not know the history of the Sacramento scene over the past decades" perhaps you could fill me in because I guess I missed it while I was playing shows etc. do i need to give you a resume since you are obviously the last word on Sacramento music?
Don't you find it odd that more than a few people are upset by your article and could you not at least acknowledge you may have overstated things ( a fundamental of journalism) a bit rather than acting spoiled and defensive.

As for your thinly veiled digs at mine and others false names, do you think Kevin's last name is really Seconds? I guess that doesn't bother you though.

You can't be serious. While those two have been active here in Sac and have made contributions to local music, there are plenty of bands that did just fine without them. What a slap in the face to hard working bands who have played for next to nothing in local venues because of their desire to play music-that's what keeps the "scene" alive, not someone taking door money and often going home with more dough than the bands . Remember, promoters would have nothing without the bands. Finally, how does Jerry Perry figure in getting paid because other musicians grew up here/played here? That is some wild logic.

I could not agree more Beerzie. As a daily commuter I am very conscientious of all elements in my view, however there are times when the street is simply not an option (RR track crossings, fear of death by vehicle, double parking, delivery vans etc)due to automotive traffic and often really surprisingly and hostile bad attitudes toward bikes. I drive as well but always share the road, why wouldn't anyone else extend the same courtesy? How hard is it to allow someone on a bike a little breathing room and perhaps some courtesy in not assuming all cyclists are the same just as I do not assume are drivers are all the same until proven otherwise. I regularly experience all sorts of foul comments regarding my mode of transportation and it is boggling. Are Sacramentans as ignorant as people think they are? I would like to think not. A bicycle is valid and has much more business downtown than your automobile. It is not a big place and can be biked /walked/bused/trained very easily. I also see many cyclists policing other cyclists regarding their riding habits, this is good too unless it degenerates into a lecture rather than advice. Anyway, this is a needlessly sore subject in a city that is far more perfect for cycling than driving. The street goes both ways.

Good idea: lets get rid of public transportation, close our amazingly confusing straight, grid style streets, and close all parking spaces and dispose of the homeless. Are you having trouble finding the "other" library entrance too? If you get rid of public transportation, what do you think the parking problem will be like? if you are driving, you are part of the problem and cannot complain about parkingwithout being a hypocrite.
As far as the " rest of the area" and their opinions- although I don't see any evidence to back this statement whatsoever. what would you prefer,? downtown more closely resembling Natomas, Granite Bay or that hotspot known as Elk Grove? Sprawl is much better than a treelined city. Now we can all go to Linens and Things whenever we want and then maybe some crummy chain restaurant. Now that's progress.
