<content type="text">It's on the newly named "Blues Alley," which is the alley south of B Street and north of C Street, and it's between 22nd and 23rd streets. The physical address is 2207 C St., which is a little confusing, as it's not actually on C Street.

I guess the new alley names won't be known until they get some signage up. Thanks for the comments.</content>

<content type="text">You're right. It will take a long time and more than just cars if it is to change. Police calls for service are down since the same time last year, a fact they attribute to the new location of the Greyhound terminal. If the 700 and 800 blocks are successfully redeveloped and start to thrive, I think K Street will be a very different place in a decade.</content>

    <content type="text">Hi Mark,

There was no intention of "I told you so" in this article. It's just an update to let people know what those who are there on a daily basis are seeing. We all know these things take a while to have any effect, as some of those interviewed pointed out.

I stood at the light rail stop in front of the Crest for 10 minutes before I saw a car on the street for the photo. The natural question most who don't travel K Street every day would have is, "Are there cars on it now, and is there any change?" That's what this was about.</content>

<content type="text">William, I was always taught that "historic" buildings are those historical buildings with special significance, such as the Great Pyramid, the Eiffel Tower, or locally Sutter's Fort.

In the section you quoted, that is how I read it. She mentions a treaty being historic, while later on, she mentions documents being historical. So I see it as Sutter's Fort = historic, and my house (built in 1920) = historical. It seems more natural to say historic, so I did check it out before publishing, and the State Parks Department has a "Historical Building Code" (http://ohp.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21410).

Now, I might be placing less historical significance to those buildings, in which case I would defer to your better knowledge of the subject. And of course, it is entirely possible that I was taught wrong and am reading too much into something simple.</content>

<content type="text">Thanks for the comment. However, "historical" is correct in this sense. Here is a link to the explanation from a free site, but the gist of it is that "historic" usually refers to an important event or occasion, and "historical" is a general adjective meaning something is from history.

With details not released by city officials, it seemed prudent to get an analysis from an industry expert familiar with the issue not just in Sacramento, but other jurisdictions across California. In the article, I never quoted or sourced anyone on the City Council or in the city government as saying Occupy Sacramento and chicken coops delayed their ability to make a decision. That comment is attributed to Daniel Conway of the California Restaurant Association, which is not at all a part of the city, but an industry organization. He merely pointed out that the council has had a lot on its plate lately, and it was relevant to the article, so I included it.</content>

One thing that struck me about Charleston was how prevalent Yuengling was. I asked about other beers from the south, and they said that they are working on them, but many are near impossible to get out here. Yuengling was something they said they were reasonably sure they can get, which is why it was included in the article.</content>

    <content type="text">guokas365:

I have full support for the First Amendment, as well as all the others still on the books. You misinterpret my comments. I never once said Occupy Sacramento doesn't have the right to protest or demonstrate. All I said was that the demonstrators drew a line in the sand, and the police had to make a decision, since it was impossible to ignore Occupy Sacramento.

There is a law, and police will enforce it. Is that law Constitutional? That might be debatable.

Please re-read my comments. As a journalist, I am not giving my opinion on Occupy Sacramento, nor am I supporting one side over the other. Consider it an analysis of the situation as I saw it.

That the park has closing hours is a fact, not opinion. That the police enforce the laws is a fact, not opinion. That the protesters very loudly made their intentions to go against that law is a fact, not an opinion.

Nowhere in my comments will you see opinion, except possibly on my assertion that more often than not, police will enforce the law, as to not do so is to give official approval of something – which is not a job for the police, but for elected officials held accountable to the people.

And a word of clarification: I never said the police were forcing their hand, but that the protesters forced the police department's hand when some of them essentially said, "We are going to violate this ordinance."

If you don't like the ordinance, that is an entirely different subject on which I will not give my opinion here in case I end up covering it.</content>

<content type="text">I wasn't saying they don't arrest homeless campers. I've written stories about the bigger sweeps. All I was pointing out was that the protesters forced the police department's hand. They had to act or be seen as giving approval. There's no real middle ground as the law is written. By just being there in a small scale, without drawing attention, it's easier for police to look the other way, if that is what they want to do.</content>

<content type="text">Regarding your note about lack of mention of the others who camp illegally but aren't arrested: The reason I didn't include that is because these demonstrators specifically drew attention to themselves and announced their intention to the media. Homeless and other campers don't. When the intent is announced, it tends to force police to one action or the other.

The first option is do nothing. The second is to enforce the laws. In that case, the police will almost always enforce the laws.</content>

<content type="text">When I spoke with Bay Miry and Ali Youssefi about the redevelopment project on the 700 block, they told me they would like to bring in an urban grocery store (but the space they have for it is smaller than a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods).

They said they will first talk to the owners of the old Greyhound station so they don't duplicate efforts.

As such, nothing is sure yet, and any grocery tenant that might come in would need to want to, which would be up to them, but with the housing going in on the 700 block, it seems likely that some form of grocery store in the area would do well.</content>

    <content type="text">Hi Scott,

There are currently a few redevelopment projects under way (notably the south side of the 700 block and 800 block) that seek to accomplish what you are talking about. See the last link in the article for photos and some background on the 700 block. While redevelopment remains a controversial issue as far as how much economic growth the projects get from the amount put into them, the work is being done.</content>

<content type="text">I spent about 25 years living in Roseville, and I can't say there was much xenophobia. Rather the opposite, as most of my neighbors (whose names I knew, whose kids I went to school with and whose dogs I watched when they were out of town) would take trips to Europe, or at least dream of doing so.

I moved to Midtown for the simple fact that I enjoy city life more than urban life, at least for now. I like walking places, and Roseville didn't really work out in that way for me.

I never have understood the petty whining between places that are 15 minutes apart. Or even 15 hours apart by plane. My friends in Paris, when I lived there, were the same as my friends in the United States. They just spoke in a different language and thought all Americans ate McDonald's every day and carried pistols stuffed in their jeans pockets.

I've never worn clothes by Ed Hardy, Affliction, Tapout or any of the other ones that are similar, even when I lived in Roseville, but I also don't think that makes me any better than (or essentially different from) those who do.</content>

<content type="text">William, I'm curious: Did parts of Western Europe ever undergo something similar in terms of sprawl? In traveling, it was most striking to me how their city centers – in places such as Paris, London, Rome, Salzburg, Vienna, Munich, etc – are the nicer, more-expensive areas where everyone wants to live, while the outer areas are often cheap or, in some cases, very dangerous.

Is it just different priorities on what life should be like, or was there a time when Europeans preferred large out-of-town homes? (I know the nobility did).

Are we going through something they went through over there, or is this entirely unrelated?</content>

Are we just too reliant on getting in a car and driving? Can we not come up with anything that will draw people to K Street and make it successful without cars?

<content type="text">You don't accept (was it Nixon's?) "silent majority" theory?

That said, most demonstrations are by their nature composed of people from one side of an issue. There may be counterprotests nearby, but look at the Westboro Baptist Church protesting at military funerals. If I only interview the people there, I have presented a very biased story.

I remember covering the beginnings of the tea party in 2008. At the time, it was people protesting taxes. Who actually likes taxes? But I still had to find the other side, which was absent from all the demonstrations. And given three years, it's pretty clear that that helped the story be unbiased, rather than creating a bias.</content>

<content type="text">Well the City Council can't legally discuss policy outside of an agendized City Council meeting, open to the public, with 72 hours' advance notice, per the Brown Act.

That was why the meeting was an "information-only" meeting, where they were able to discuss/hear about the details of food truck operation that, as Conway said, aren't something the press will likely get into on articles, as that doesn't serve most readers.

I talked to Councilman Steve Cohn this morning, who told me that council members will likely not be at the next meeting(s), but they will be taking part in discussions as it moves forward to the Law and Legislation committee of the City Council – the procedural step that is next in line when it comes to getting the ordinance changed. That meeting will be agendized, with public notification on the city website (www.cityofsacramento.org - click "Departments" and then "Mayor and City Council" and then the link to meetings), and the public will be able to comment.

If/once it passes through the Law and Legislation committee, it will go to the full council for a vote. It's unlikely that this is something that will be done quickly.</content>

I'd be happy to discuss any facts with this story. We are an online-only publication, so what you see is the extent of what the article was about.

I do stand by the facts in this article – all of them – and the store has since reopened under a different name, as stated in the article. Aaron Hearing was listed as the owner. Was there something specific you feel is incorrect?

As for relevance, as a hyper-local publication, we cover businesses in Midtown as well as other locations and frequently report on their closings, openings and other significant events.</content>

Do you think the national strategic nature of the freeways played into their designs? Or do you think it was just shortsightedness? I know Eisenhower played a huge part in the interstate system, modeled on the Autobahn he saw in Germany in World War II. A lot (most? all?) of our defense projects are unsustainable, but I haven't really delved into the interstate system's decision process.</content>

    <content type="text">Hi Dale,

Thanks for your comments. I just want to add some clarification. Not everything discussed when I spoke to Raya and Hefling can possibly be in the article, and the statements about older residents vs. newer, younger residents were, in part, a simplification of a much longer conversation. Neither Hefling nor Raya made it seem as a war between two age groups.

The distinction they made was with a set of residents who, in a large part, were here before there were entertainment and bar spaces on that block and another set of residents that have, in many cases, moved in since then and naturally did not see the neighborhood change.

Also, I put the mention of the 70 residents near the discussion of the two groups of residents. It was not a natural link made by Hefling, but where I thought the information most made sense.</content>

<content type="text">I asked Hoyt that question. While it's debatable, her answer was that, in the current system, central city residents don't have a majority voice in any council district and therefore don't necessarily have a strong voice. She said that if a council member were to be beholden to the central city, it would be difficult to marginalize the voice.

It will be interesting to see if the MBA agrees with that assessment or prefers multiple council members with smaller individual influences.</content>

<content type="text">That may be the case, but my perception is that we, as a group of people, simply don't care about sports as much out here as they do on the East Coast. I'm not familiar with the Celtics, but I know the Red Sox had a loyal following despite 80-odd years of not winning a World Series. They've also been there since the early 1900s (Fenway Park turns 100 next year). With so much city history, I think they just feel it means more.

Again, that's just my perception.</content>

<content type="text">I think the idea of a pro sports team uniting a community is something more often found on the East Coast. I only notice it here when we have a winning team and a fierce rival.

When I was in Boston two weeks ago, there was no shortage of Celtics, Red Sox and Bruins attire. They are far more loyal to their teams than we are on the West Coast. I just don't see the same level of fanaticism out here. Or maybe I'm just missing it.

<content type="text">Hi, and thanks for your comment.

However, the fire cost recovery ordinance never went into effect, since the contract with the third-party billing service was never ratified. In the case of this ordinance, all bills would have come from Fire Recovery USA, and never could have legally been sent.

The fee that is the subject of this article wasn't even brought to council before 2010, so it isn't the same situation. I am not familiar with the situation you mention.</content>

<content type="text">To each his own. Homelessness is not a crime. Camping in the parkway is. If I wrote that rangers were removing homeless from the parkway, I'd have comments going the other way, and I wouldn't be able to counter them. I think it's pretty clear in the article that the discussion is about the homeless, given the usage of the word in the first sentence.</content>
