If I remember my college lit classes correctly, Ms. Shelley's themes in Frankenstein were the responsibilities of bringing life into the world, and the difficult relationships of parents and children. The original F-monster is very articulate, vengeful and scheming. Halloween is a great time to pick up the original story, and be surprised by the directions it took in scary movies over the years!

It was also great to see a sold-out theater! :)

2nd photo correction: That is Lisa Ferris in the photo with Jacquelyn Piro Donovan and Aaron Serotsky as an ensemble member. Page Silvester does perform the role of Bet but it is not her in the photograph.

Thankfully none of the kids in the Junior Company were identified. In a previous review of a show at another theater company with a lot of kids in it the photographer had to identify several children in each shot while they were moving about rapidly in a rehearsal. We got a lot of "that is my child in the photograph" from parents.

Originally the NAG (Neighborhood Advisory Group) was the NAAG (Neighborhood Association Advisory Group). Association was in the title because there were several active Neighborhood Associations in the central city, which collectively formed the Central City Alliance of Neighborhoods (CCAN). They had learned by meeting each other accidentally at council meetings and reading the Sutter Town News, etc. that they were all having similar problems with city services and staff opposition to resident needs, including preservation of historic homes and other structures, Banding together gave us a cooperative voice that could overcome the city's tactic "divide and conquer."

Then Bill Edgar became city manager, the city had fallen into bad fiscal shape. He respected and recognized that many residents had several ideas which could be implemented and save the city money in the central city. He reasoned that if that resource existed here, then it must be equally so citywide. So he crafted a plan to institute a city wide "Barn Raising" event (a concept borrowed from the days when a barn burned down, all neighbors came together to help rebuild it) and together "Barn Raising" to help the city pull through the fiscal emergency.

Through a series of citywide workshops he tapped into residents' skills, knowledge, abilities to find that volunteerism could provide many of the same services as city employees who were going to be laid off due to that fiscal emergency. He also learned that residents knew best what services and resources neighborhoods could be reduced or eliminated and those which residents felt were essential to them.

It was then he created four Neighborhood Service Areas through out the city. Mike Hanamura was our first Area Manager and Fernandez the second. There were several of us who had been "burned" by the city before and while liking Bill and staff he appointed to work with us, we remained suspicious. To ensure that the city did not slip back to its old ways, we in Area 1 then formed the NAAG to hold meetings to continue our communication.

We also found it necessary to create an Action Request Form (ARF) which the NAAG "chair" and city partner completed jointly at the meeting to record an issue/problem, recommendation to resolve that lack of service problem, assign staff responsibility for resolving the issue/problem and a report back when it had been resolved. It was through the more than excellent management skills of Hanamura and Fernandez that several years of productive problem solving and neighborhood improvement followed.

We look back now to realize that the Edgar/Martinez/Crist/Hanamura/ Fernandez team were the golden years, which enabled Midtown as well as other parts of the central city to become the precious and unique area of that city that attracted families and those investing to preserve historic houses to return to livable, pedestrian oriented neighborhoods that that once were here.

The restoration and improvements attracted artists, musicians, a variety of offices and businesses to move here as well as dinner houses and live theatres. All were warmly welcomed, including the intial few entertainment clubs, which many of us patronized. Some worked with Midtown Businesses to hold events such as Halloween trick or treat, sidewalk sales, art and Christmas festivities.

It is because of these years of hard work and eventual success that turned the area from a slum to the livable mixed ethnic and income area that it became and we oldies and newer home owners guard so fiercely against the heretofore uninterested alcohol businesses, the over concentration of which now threaten to degrade our quality of life.

It was strange that the staff allowed the microphone feedback to continue for so long. Sedaris seemed quite irritated by it in a David Sedaris kind of way which the audience found amusing.
Be warned that this play is not really suitable for children. In Bill Burgua's review he suggests that adults will enjoy the references to homosexuality and cross dressing in the play. He also states that children will see them as silly. I think he needs to give children more credit. My 11 and 13 year old daughters were disturbed by these references. The dialogue certainly did not go over their heads. And as an adult I found the comments offensive and not suitable for a family friendly show.

The conversation between Terry McMillan and Mary Mackey got off to a rocky start last Thursday evening at California Lectures. McMillan pleaded being "post-menopausal" when her memory failed as to the location of her "Waiting to Exhale" characters.
===
Better yet (?)
There was a rocky start to the conversation between Terry McMillan and Mary Mackey at California Lectures when the "Waiting to Exhale" author pleaded being "post-menopausal" for being unable to remember where she last left her characters from the best-selling novel.
===
Still a little confusing...I wasn't there, so I'm having a little trouble putting things into context. Was she planning on using puppets as part of her presentation, and couldn't locate them? Or is this a more esoteric passage? Regardless...a reporter needs to (in most cases) use the first sentence/paragraph to encapsulate as much of the story as possible to draw readers in...not to alienate them.

Can someone explain the difference between Second Saturday events in Sacramento and Folsom insomuch as I've never heard of Folsom having problems like those documented in Sacramento? Is there something they're doing that Sacramento is not? Unless the difference is purely demographic, or even socioeconomic, it would seem that however they have things structured in Folsom is perhaps how things could be structured in Sacramento.

Janis Stevens is one of Northern California's most brilliant actresses and talented directors. She has directed several stage plays and performed numerous roles on several stages in Northern Calif and in addition to the Off Broadway show mentioned above but also in Maine and Philadelphia theatres. In 2006 she also received the Elly Award for her portrayal of Julia Morgan at the California Stage premier of Becoming Julia Morgan. She played Klytemnestra the California Stage production of Electra and Her Family in Myth. Stevens has an incredible ability to draw the audience into each character she portrays.

that may be true but no regulation leads to the mayhem we experienced last summer - huge crowds descending on neighborhoods and business areas and increased property crime and sadly - violent crime. So what are we to do? Keep it in balance perhaps? Try to return it to an arts centered event? Instead of a street party. Midtown neighborhoods and businesses cannot take the free for all it has been for the last two or three years. As much as I love going out on Second Saturday and enjoying the event, as a Midtown property owner I would rather see it die than spin out of control and further endanger visitors and residents, our unique residential neighborhoods and business areas that make Midtown the special place it is.

Almost forgot! Broadway Sacramento returns with "9 to 5" March 9 at Sacramento Community Theater.
“9 to 5: The Musical” is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. This new musical comedy, direct from Broadway, is based on the hit movie and features Dolly Parton’s original hit title song along with her new Tony Award® -and Grammy-nominated score. The book is by Patricia Resnick (co-writer of the original screenplay). “9 to 5: The Musical” tells the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there's nothing they can't do – even in a man's world. Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, “9 to 5: The Musical” is about teaming up and taking care of business... it's about getting credit and getting even.

Thanks, this is why I included the link to the youtube pieceabout Morris and musicality. As I related at the end the Mark Morris Dance Group Music Ensembe (Wolfram Koessel, cello; Colin Fowler, piano; and Jesse Mills, violin) are so good that it is truly like attending a music recitel alone. Fowler and Mills performing the Harrison piece were a knockout. The only somewhat negative side is that watching the musicians is so facinating that they can distract the viewer from the dancers.

For readers that are interested in the creative process I encourage them to do some internet search on Mark Morris and his creative process. He truly is a creative genius of our time.

I don't know what is the original source of Chris' photo. I took it from his facebook page. By the way, there is a great photo of Chris at the piano on his facebook page. Facebook wouldn't let me copy it. Besides being a great musician Chris is such a nice guy and so self afacing. He does a fun and funny little dance turn in “A Grand Night for Singing."
May I offer a buried lede, Bill: Morris is justifiably renowned among his peers for requiring performances of his work be accompanied by LIVE musicians, which has become prohibitively expensive for many American dance companies, even most with larger reputations and tour followings. The differences for dancers having to listen to and pace movements to recorded musical tracks versus the spontaneity & variations inherent in live performance music accompaniment is, some would claim, huge. Morris' artistic and creative insistence is an important distinction, and well worth recognition in reviews of his performances, as you did so well.
