We had a very unhappy experience on many levels with PODS when we moved a year and a half ago. I hope that Brian Bills can improve delivery of services to central city residents. Much of their program seemed to be designed to work in the suburbs with wide streets and two car or more driveways. They did not have a clue how to deal with narrower streets and very small or non existant driveways and the regulations of the central city.

Bar West occupies the space that previously was Aura, before that Giani's and before that Black Pearl. All of this in about a five year span. This speaks to the sustainability of eight bar/nightclub/resturants on one block, especially with the competition of th 20th and K area and now the 10th and K area.

2nd photo correction: That is Lisa Ferris in the photo with Jacquelyn Piro Donovan and Aaron Serotsky as an ensemble member. Page Silvester does perform the role of Bet but it is not her in the photograph.

Thankfully none of the kids in the Junior Company were identified. In a previous review of a show at another theater company with a lot of kids in it the photographer had to identify several children in each shot while they were moving about rapidly in a rehearsal. We got a lot of "that is my child in the photograph" from parents.

Next up: "Anything Goes" featuring the songs of Cole Porter. This is currently one of the hottest tickets on Broadway. "Anything Goes" stars the terrific Vicky Lewis who thrilled audiences as Fanny Brice in last summer's “Funny Girl."

This show is bound to entertain the adult audience but is also kid friendly. The family guide recomends it for youth age four and over.

One other point. NAG does not take positions. NAG is set up only to be a place to exchange information. Part of its' design is to be a place where neighborhood association leadership and other interested individuals can hear from city staff and leadership and others in the community such as developers, business owners and others without going around to every neighborhood association and interest group in Area 1 (Downtown, Midtown and East Sac.).

Now individuals can ask questions and give feedback. Sometimes that may be strong feedback but as a whole NAG does not take a position on anything other that it is there to help create and maintain livable neighborhoods by having informed neighborhoods.

Correction: The City did not provide pizzas. For years and years members of the agenda committee solicited donated pizzas from numerous venues that had pizzas on their menus. At times NAG regular attendees donated pizzas. For two years pizzas were donated by SacPress. Excellent pizzas I might add. When SacPress management understandably found this becoming too expensive the agenda committee decided that NAG would not end if there wasn't any pizza.

The sadist thing about Uncle Fred retiring and closing Cheap Thrills was the loss of access to the McNally's incredible costume collection. It is so great that the family is bringing back Cheap Thrills.

A few years ago we and friends rented vintage formal wear from the store for a cruse. We had so much fun going to the formal dinners. The ship's staff and fellow passengers loved it. Mixing accessories we had a different look for each dinner. Ironically it was no more expensive than renting tuxes. If one is inventive there are lots more occasions that Halloween to wear a costume.

Great idea Tony. Here is the history. A few years ago an alcohol ordinance was moving through the city government to levy a small tax on alcohol sales. The higher the alcohol sales the more tax would be collected so where there were lager concentrations of alcohol sales leading to more problems there would be money to deal with the issues. The ordinance got to law and ledge. Council members Hammond and Sheedy strongly favored it because of the problems associated with alcohol sales in their districts. It is not just a Midtown problem. Council member Cohn killed the ordinance in law and ledge and no council member has picked it up since.

Yes Ms. Murphy is correct that was chair of Marshall School/New Era Park Neighborhood Association for about 10 years since no one else would step up. I worked to create the merger of Marshall School NA and New Era Park NA sine New Era Park shared many similarities with Marshall School and had lost all leadership of their NA.

I do not know where she gets that I am no longer a stakeholder in this neighborhood. Just because someone doesn't reside in a neighborhood it does not mean they do not have numerous other reasons to be involved in a neighborhood.

She is correct that I do not share the same opinions as the current board. I would like to point out that many of the current residents in the neighborhood do not have the same opinions as the board.
I was informed by the current chair of MSNEPNA that when he took over that he had different opinions about problems with the bars and night clubs since he made his living working in the industry.

I would be very interested to hear what the current hopes, dreams, and aspirations we have for this neighborhood. Who ever we is. Is it Ms. Murphy, the current board or everyone in the neighborhood?

I would hope that my comments would be taken in the context of someone who that when the city government went on and on about Sacramento becoming the most livable city in the country that I took them at their word and worked for a livable city for every one.

There are a lot of constituencies besides the gay community in Midtown/Downtown that are not happy with the Balkanization of the area. As Vincene Jones pointed out at last month's NAG meeting on redistricting, the different constituencies that support a single district for Midtown/Downtown (or any other redistricting) better go find each other and start building coalitions.

The good news is that there are gay household spread throughout Midtown/Downtown that are part of neighborhood and other constituencies that can help build those coalitions.

The bad news is that much of the business community is happy with the status quo where the actual residents in Midtown/Downtown have less influence with their councilmembers. The council members are influenced by the wealthier ring neighborhood donors and the business donors of Midtown/Downtown.

The other difficulty is being balanced by population. The current huge inbalance is District 4 with a shrunken population and District 1 that has massive growth. Until the infill of Downtown and the Railyards is a reality there isn't the population in Downtown/Midtown to justify a district on its' own. Do you start from the center and work out? My neighborhood not far outside the central city has four lesbian and two gay households in less than one block.

Almost forgot! Broadway Sacramento returns with "9 to 5" March 9 at Sacramento Community Theater.
“9 to 5: The Musical” is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era. This new musical comedy, direct from Broadway, is based on the hit movie and features Dolly Parton’s original hit title song along with her new Tony Award® -and Grammy-nominated score. The book is by Patricia Resnick (co-writer of the original screenplay). “9 to 5: The Musical” tells the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there's nothing they can't do – even in a man's world. Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, “9 to 5: The Musical” is about teaming up and taking care of business... it's about getting credit and getting even.

John Paul and I were a couple for 28 1/2 years before we were allowed to marry. Did marrying make us love each other any more? No. Did it deepen our commitment to each other? Yes.

What marring may have done the most is give an official recognition to our relationship. It cleared up a lot of possible legal problems. A large number of friends and family enjoyed sharing the official recognition of our relationship.

I still can not clearly explain it but being legally married and wearing a wedding band most certainly makes me feel differently.

I look forward to the day that is certainly coming that everyone has this right restored to them

Thanks, this is why I included the link to the youtube pieceabout Morris and musicality. As I related at the end the Mark Morris Dance Group Music Ensembe (Wolfram Koessel, cello; Colin Fowler, piano; and Jesse Mills, violin) are so good that it is truly like attending a music recitel alone. Fowler and Mills performing the Harrison piece were a knockout. The only somewhat negative side is that watching the musicians is so facinating that they can distract the viewer from the dancers.

For readers that are interested in the creative process I encourage them to do some internet search on Mark Morris and his creative process. He truly is a creative genius of our time.

I don't know what is the original source of Chris' photo. I took it from his facebook page. By the way, there is a great photo of Chris at the piano on his facebook page. Facebook wouldn't let me copy it. Besides being a great musician Chris is such a nice guy and so self afacing. He does a fun and funny little dance turn in “A Grand Night for Singing." There are so many singers around town that sing the praises of Chris Schlagel.

Thanks Brooks for helping spread the word. One of the significant pushes to bring back the CMA came from the alumni. Gary Ziegenfuss was also willing to come out of retirement and work pro bono to help. Neighborhood Services is doing a great job helping especially with their short staffing and limited resources. If you want to get the planning academy going try finding alumni to support the effort. I am looking forward to facilitating to hear what changes have come to the city government since attending the CMA in 2003.

Let's just start with most livable. And I mean by that a city full of neighborhoods where people love to live. Not necessarily the 24 hour city of things to do for folks that don't live here. Remember as I try to keep telling folks the root of livable is LIVE. If we create a city where our very diverse citizens love to live. Where there are lots of things the residents love to do whether it is going out to an evening on the town or enjoying a diversity of arts. Where there a lots of parks to play in, markets to buy the bounty of the region and lots of ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
Then just maybe world class is what we will become.

Nice article Steve. Since I have been writing more farm to market related articles for SacPress I am enjoying what others have to write about this. Shopping the year around Sunday farmers market under the W/X freeway yesterday it struck me that besides obtaining some of the best food products available what fun it is to do.

My god what is the cost of 80 police officers?
For years when Midtown residents would call 911 or the non-emergency police number they were told if no one is brandishing a weapon then no officer would be responding, even for a major brawl. Residents were always asked "is there a gun?" "Is there a knife?" If not residents were told that there are too many serious crimes that the police were responding to else where in the city. Are these folks outside Midtown just fending for themselves now on 2nd Saturdays?
