Silkies are an adorable breed of chickens.
We always had fresh eggs growing up in Roseville. Different breeds produce different sizes, colors and frequency of eggs so it's good to have more than one type.
Fresh eggs taste so much better than store bought.

For the last two weeks, my daughter and I have been helping a long-time family friend whose daughter has been removed from her custody, under a very misguided Parental Alienation claim. I’ve accompanied her to an attorney meeting, my daughter created an email and website on her behalf hoping we could get her story out to the media, all the while trying to be encouraging, but guiding her in various directions to keep her focused isn’t as easy as it sounds. Their entire family is drained; emotionally, mentally and physically wiped out and it’s trickling down to extended family and friends. Those with children are asking if this can happen to them. Their little ones are waking up with nightmares that they’ll be ripped from their mommy or daddy too.

During the 30 plus years of our friendship, I don’t ever recall having to be so unemotional. Logic keeps me grounded—allowing me to maintain some degree of composure, unfortunately that logic also comes with a mild obsessive compulsive control freak that carries another title. I like to-do lists, brainstorming for efficiency, pulling teams together to complete projects and assigning tasks to people with the best skill set to accomplish those tasks.

Logical is difficult when you have exposed raw emotions. I realize my friend’s entire world has been turned upside down and I’m not presumptuous enough to claim to know or understand how she feels. I just wish that I could give her my ability to detach emotionally from stressful situations.

Today I became profoundly aware that my daughter deconstructs issues like me.
Thought-Emotion-Resolution.

After she hung up the phone, she looked at me and said “Ya know you and Ralph are the best divorcees.” Now, let me explain what my 19 year old meant.

My ex-husband and I have a very unique relationship. If people saw us together they would never know we were divorced. We were best friends before the marriage and after many long conversations and many years of healing we can admit that in our hearts we will always love each other. We just can’t live under the same roof.

When our marriage ended, it was an emotional rollercoaster but I was extremely logical about how to separate everything. I took what I brought into the relationship; including our daughter, and left everything else that was his prior to our marriage…he kept his car, the furniture, stereo, TV, tools, Music…well, one CD and a couple articles of clothing, that our daughter has confiscated for her own wardrobe.

I sit here thinking about my friend’s horrific situation. This could have been me. I could have been the one fighting for my daughter, racking up attorney fees—hoping that he would realize that it was best for her to stay with me and all of the extended family, including his parents in the next town. I’m so thankful that never happened, either because we knew what was right or if it was just because we lived in different states.

In actuality, my ex-husband got off easy; he rarely paid the court ordered support and for 16 years he was completely absent from our daughter’s life. She was raised in a large loving family where four generations lived on one city block. Her father’s side of the family was one town over, I am introduced as their daughter, and I spend more time with his family than he does. Which I’m sure drives his current wife crazy. I said we had a unique relationship.

Even as unfair as he treated me and our daughter—last week I actually called him to thank him for being a deadbeat dad. Yes, I would have appreciated the monthly support, but fighting for custody would have been detrimental to her. Yes I would have preferred to see our daughter having a loving respectful relationship with her father, but we don’t get everything we want. She had my parents, me and my grandparents as her primary care givers. She grew up knowing right from wrong. That your word and a handshake are worth more than anything written on paper. Good grades are expected and not rewarded. Life is not fair and everyone must pay their dues.

It hurts me knowing that so many children of broken homes aren’t as mature and clearheaded. They expect gifts for their affection, they don’t know what trust, security or unconditional love looks like.

In an unspoken understanding; I knew that she was hovering between complete rational thought and bewilderment on how other divorced couples can’t just split everything right down the middle and still be able to do what is right for their children. Today she took one more step to being an adult and I felt very proud to have been a part of that. At 19 she is keenly aware that the line between sense and sensibility is very fine, if they have the ability to discern it at all.

We LOVE GH and haven't started the RB yet.
It's fun to listen to kids come home from a friend's house and say "Wow, there is this great new band, we have to get the CD." Then find out it's AC/DC, The Stones or Aerosmith...we just laugh, .."Honey that's not new" and pull out a vinyl record...which then starts a whole new issue.
For Parents that think video games waste time and warp brains...this is a GREAT WAY to bring the family back together. My daughter and I are still on easy, but daddy can expert through everything to unlock all the music!!
Quothia...there are all kinds of cheater unlock codes!!

People in general have no respect for other people's possessions.
**
I have people come to my home that sit on the edge of couches and arm chairs..."Were you raised in a barn? Don't sit on the arms like that-sit on the floor if you haven't been taught how to sit in a chair!"
**
I do laundry and find that people have written on the back of my daughter's clothing...in College!
**
Neighbors stomp up/down their stairs shaking the entire building, without any thought to the rest of owners.
**
People receive mail in error and keep it for a week.
**
As for this story in particular:
What kind of mother doesn't check on the children?!
Where the kids even in car seats that were properly strapped to the vehicle?
OH - Bad Parents Tick Me Off!
She probably wanted out of there because she didn't have valid insurance.
People buy the policy to give "proof" of insurance to register the vehicle then let it expire...keeping the card!!!

Can the residents start a petition to present to the city counsel or the police department?
I thought that CA laws were passed many years ago that held bar responsible for the condition of how they're patrons left their establishment. If they're drunk and drive then the owners can also be held accountable for the DUI, manslaughter or involuntary murder charges.
If this still stands true, can't they be held accountable for fines that residence can pursue for continually having their peace disturbed? If there are enough complaints can the bar loose their liquor license?

Because let's be honest - I know I'm not going to remember in one to two years that the taxes could be reduced by one percent after getting used to paying it. This is going to hurt the economy, because I'll reduce my spending even more than I did when I became part of the ever-growing unemployment rate.

This was well written and very informative, easy to read and I had to look up the word "fascistic", because I also thought it was a possible typo.
The bigger issue is why was the previous board allowed dismiss the program because of their own personal beliefs? If the program has been successfully operating in the school district for 90 years and there were not documented bias, why did this pass? Did this ever go to a public meeting or was this decision made behind closed doors?
We will need military leaders to replace those that are retiring or ones that we loose in wars. SF was known for it's military presence and it makes sense that they have a high participation in the JROTC program.
Great Story!!

From the description of how the smokers were responding I'm guessing that there isn't an employee handbook outlying the Rules/Regulations or Policies/Procedures. All businesses should have these and there should specific outlines for breaks and Management needs to enforce them. Smokers DO NOT get more breaks or frequent breaks because they have an addictive habit. All employees get the same amount of time for breaks. This behavior is considered "excessive breaks" by most business standards and they would be written up and then let go if this behavior continued.
You definitely showed us the frustration you were going through. It reminded me of similar things in my work history. The typos were a little distracting but the readers could see this was a raw emotion you were sharing, rereading it after a cool down would have caught those, but the power was there and I could feel how upset you were--good job!
It's good that Donald chose to listen to your side of the story. Heated tempers in these situations cause nothing but problems. Donald needs to defuse this immediately. Breaks need to be outlined in black-and-white, not just verbally because this will continue until he stops the excessive smoke breaks.
The $186 in tips that night weren't really worth the stress you went through; and I'm not sure why you had to bus the entire dining room alone--the punishment doesn't fit the crime--the culprits should have had to do all the busing, count the tips and then hand everything over to you just to prove a point that they need to do their job.
Owners/Employers need to be a little tougher on this younger generation. Make them understand that it isn't enough to show up for the job and expect a paycheck, employers actually expect you to work for the compensation.
I'd be curious to see how this unfolds over the next few months, hopefully no additional fallout. Again, great emotion. You put us right there with you in the heat of the moment.

--This is a collaboration by Angelina Turner and Becky Morgan.--

Have you ever been driving down the freeway and noticed that a section is named after someone? A portion of Hwy-65 is dedicated to fallen Officer Mark A. White; or historical figures like the Donner Party have Donner Pass? Cities of all sizes have at least one building named after someone that gave a measurable contribution to their community or accomplished something great: the Crocker Art Museum, Sutter’s Fort, or on a grander scale, the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building or the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. Colleges name dorms, gymnasiums and lecture halls, to honor a large donation or because of an invaluable impression left on the school--which brings me to the Julie Estridge Library Memorial Dedication.

If you walk through the Roseville High School (RHS) campus, you will notice several structures that follow the tradition of honoring those individuals who have left lasting impressions on the alumni, parents, staff and teachers. There is the Moeller Gymnasium; J.B. Gale Little Theater; Patti Baker Performing Arts Center; and the Sylvia Besana Administration Building; in addition to the Tedy Bruschi Weight Training Facility and Hanson Field (the football field).

Roseville High School alumni and community members have launched a movement to recognize RHS's longest-serving librarian and one of its most beloved teachers, Julie Estridge, by naming the school's library in her memory.

Mrs. Estridge, who passed away last year, served as librarian at Roseville High School for 27 years, from 1979-2006. Considered a transformational figure on the RHS campus, Mrs. Estridge coordinated the re-design and modernization of the library to make it the intellectual and emotional heart of the school.

"Julie was a shining example of the kind of person we would all hope to be. With her welcoming good cheer,
wise humor and compassionate attention, she left a vibrant legacy of courtesy and quiet grace in the hearts of
those who knew her."-Becky Morgan

“It is teachers and administrators such as Julie Estridge that make students fondly remember their experiences
at Roseville High School. It is teachers and administrators such as Julie Estridge that helped me succeed in my
life with a successful career at Microsoft and as an elected official in Milton Township, Michigan. It is teachers and
administrators like Julie Estridge that should be honored and remembered.” -Supervisor Robert Benjamin

“I have very fond memories of Mrs. Estridge. She was someone that cared deeply for the students, not because we
were students but because she always saw the best in people and believed they could do anything if they had the
tools within their reach. She encouraged us to always set goals that might be just out of reach so that we didn’t sell
ourselves short.”-Angelina Turner

The supporters of naming the library in Julie’s honor feel that this is a normal sequence, since the library is one of the few widely used buildings not named after someone. But like all things in life, nothing is that simple.

Our goal is to find as many alumni who attended RHS between 1979 and the present day and to urge them to write letters to the Roseville Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees in support of the dedication.

Alumni and other members of the community who would like to add their names to the list of supporters should contact RHS teacher Cecil Morris at cmorris@rjuhsd.us.

Supporters should also send a message to the board members asking them to support the naming of the library in honor of Mrs. Estridge. Their addresses are:

* Jack Duran, jduran@rjuhsd.us
* R. Jan Pinney, rpinney@rjuhsd.us
* Garry Genzlinger, ggenzlinger@rjuhsd.us
* Paige Stauss, pstauss@rjuhsd.us
* Scott Huber, shuber@rjuhsd.us

We don’t know if there is any opposition to this petition, thought we do know that the current district policy doesn’t promote memorial dedications of district buildings. But we are hoping to provide a unified front with which to persuade them to see that our librarian, Julie Estridge, is the most qualified to have this honor bestowed in her memory.

The school board will vote on the library dedication proposal at its meeting on April 21. The list of supporters' names, as well as letters and other supporting documentation, must be submitted to the district before April 10.

If you would like to read more about Julie Estridge, her obituary can be found on The Sacramento Bee's web page http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sacbee/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=107440553

There is also a Facebook Group for supports of this proposal http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php#/group.php?gid=61821536611

With family in the police force/corrections and fire dept. You still need to take all necessary precautions to protect you and your property.
If he feels that you were the cause of his eviction. His already unstable mental issues could turn against you personally.
He knows where you live and which car belongs to you. If you have a garage - use it, every single time. Get an alarm on the car ASAP. If you feel that the neighborhood is safe to stay there, ask the landlord to install an alarm on the house because you're fearful for your well-being due to the behavior by the previous tenant.
Have the landlord make sure that the attic crawl space is NOT accessible from the other unit! Then secure it on your side.
Keep the dog in the house when you're not home. Walk the yard daily to be sure nothing has been thrown into the yard for the dog to eat.
Make sure all of your friends and family know the situation and if possible- get a photograph of this person before he moves away.

Why can't the legislators take a pay cut - We didn't vote for their raises. Shouldn't they be given a salary cap...like $60K? That's a fair income.
Oh this is a touchy topic.
Kim - thank you!

Personally I don't think the story needs to local angle . This is a global issue and needs to be brought into the open as frequently as possible. Oprah (with Dove Soap's reasearch) just had an episode focusing on women's self-image issues a few weeks ago.

Kim is right, not many people are willing to talk openly about their problems. Partly because they don't feel that they have a problem or they know they're hurting themselves and are embarassed to admit anything. So I'll share for someone - female name withheld because she'd never speak to me again if I used her real name. We'll call her-"Milli".

Milli's family has a history of seizures. At 21yrs of age, living on her own-she started having episodes and being rushed to E/R on several occassions, the family stepped in and insisted on getting to the bottom of this. Tests, examinations, drug trails/errors lead the neurologist, cardiologist and all the other "ologist" to determine she was suffering from epilepsy. Not a big stretch since her grandmother had petimal-seizures and it typically skips a generation.
Reducing her stress, and the combination of perscriptions seemed to control the situation ending any further investigation from the medical professionals. After 8 yrs of treatments for thyriod malfunctions, epilepsy medication, boyfriend moved in an started putting signs together. He called her on the it; He wanted marriage and a family...If she didn't come clean and get help he'd walk. She was Bulimic. With counseling, an accountability partner, healthy excercise, new eating habits there are no more seizures.
I didn't learn about any of this until well after their 10th anniversary. She made an off-the-cuff comment and I had to back her up. She thought that I was fully aware of the details this whole time.

I think another contributing factor are the clothing manufacturers. European and U.S.A. Mens' clothes are determined by measurements. Inches/Centimeters; Paints=Waist/Inseam, Shirts=Neck/Sleeves(Long or Short). Where women in the U.S.A. have a "MAGIC NUMBER". Which changes from designer to designer and store to store. The 'magic number' has changed over the last 40 years...and it still changing - smaller and smaller. Will the numbers become negative sizes <-1>....I mean what is smaller than a Zero? When I was in HS a 29" waist was a size 7-8 Guess jean. Now a 29" waist is a size 2 or smaller. In the 60's (my mother's era) it was a size 12.
I'm a Large Woman: My pant size ranges between and 18 - 3X depending on what store I'm in - that is a variance of an average 6 sizes! That when it isn't my body that changes - it's the manufacturer's telling me "you're this size". That plants a horrifying image in my mind; young people don't know how to deal with this mental stress - so they do what they can- they hurt themselves to achieve the goal society is putting infront of them.
There needs to be a uniform clothing size. Then there would be less importance on "I'm a Zero" If your bone structure says you wear a 32 waist with a 29 inseam that's what you are.
Okay- I'm getting down off my soap box.

I was in the construction industry. I'm on my 6th month of unemployment and decided to use this "down time" to my advantage. I headed back to school; finally earning a college education. Oddly enough , NOW I qualify for financial aid and special circumstances from being a "displaced worker". Doing something POSITIVE during this uncertain economy also looks good during interviews. Employers see that you're motivated to move forward, improving yourself and that change doesn't have you in the fetal position feeling sorry for yourself.
This is a time to build character; pay-it-forward, volunteer at hospitals, Make-A-Wish, join Big Brothers/Sisters, visit your children's schools, take your neighbors trash can in, don't walk by the trash on the sidewalk - pick it up...and throw it away or give someone a truly heartfelt smile.

Paul, I enjoy these types of stories.

At the begining you state that "Li" is fictional name, but don't disclose that "Ming" is fictional until the end. There is a random "Sunny" dropped into the dialog.
"Sunny: I actually passed out once when Li was taken and passed out again. When I awoke, Li was
       back."
Which is the fictional name; Ming or Sunny?

Sunny/Ming did not really witness any abduction.
They were in a field, Sunny/Ming passed out, then woke up, friend was gone, passed out again, friend was back. She is going by what Li told her.
An actual date would be nice. 1999 is pretty random, what season?
If you were taken by aliens, this would be in a journal and the date locked into memory...or at the very least , the last date she could remember. Many people claim to be gone seconds, but later find they have days unaccounted. Was she gone minutes? Hours? Overnight? No neighboring villagers saw anything or is this so unspeakable that neither girl even asked anyone if they saw the disk?

I understand people worry about loosing jobs and being thought of as crazy when they share their stories.
I wish that wasn't the case. The general public might have a more open mind and willingness to accept the possibilities if people confidently provided their names when giving testimonials.

I used testimonials to make a point: this is something that people believe. Just as people believe in religion.
Isn't it just as likely that there are ghosts and beings from other universes as there is that GOD sent his only son to earth to save humans from our sins?

David - excellent photo's - - espeically the shot w/the capital.
I'm still shocked that someone would steal bikes from such a high profile event regardless of the owner.
It does make SAC look a little foolish; but on the other hand - - why would you leave bikes of that value in the vehicle or on a rack. People sell photos of famous people - of course they're going to try to sell a personal possession.
Theft is everywhere and there's no sense in trying to understand it. I live in a townhouse community. People in nearest the street have been borken into once, their car countless times and had one visible peeping tom. I'm 2 doors down (20yds) have left my house & car wide open at one time or another and have been blessed w/o any issues.
Personally, I think it's because we have a dog - could be that I'm an insomniac and the lights are always on - could be they know I'm Italian and that would be an entirely different issue...LOL

Knowledge is power. If the public learns the truth on how/why things are done, like staff buying their own food, firehouse up keep; Can anyone imagine having to pay for coffe, dish soap or paper towels at your office job?...I don't think so.

Then maybe we'd be a little more willing to support bonds and other mesures to keep funding levels high, so that "finding" money isn't an issue.

This is another reason to upgrade fire alarms in the house. It's an investment.
We have two for an 800sf townhouse. The first in the kitchen and the second at the landing on the second floor. It has a horrible sound similar to an air horn blast used at pools or on boats. Then it goes to the most irritating voice "Warning-Warning...etc." It sounds like the robot from Lost in Space. It toggles between these two until you reset it.

I will be very honest, I rarely watch TV News; mainly because it's depressing, yet another reason I’m so glad I found the Sacramento Press. This forum is a balanced view of current situations in our community and we have the ability to follow the story or ask questions to get more insight.

Yesterday, my mother called telling me to watch KCRA at 6 o’clock, because there was suppose to be a piece on how to get a job in this failing economy. The only job-related piece was about the Laid-Off Journalist Blog, side note: his witty satires are worth checking out. www.kcra.com/workwanted/index.html.

I continued revising my resume, only half listening as the anchors filled the room with background noise. I stopped abruptly, grabbed the remote to rewind the DVR (What did we do before digital TV!?) I replayed the piece and turned it up just be sure I wasn't hallucinating. The news anchor’s story reported that Carlos Ortiz, the ex-husband of Alice Ortiz, who was one of nine victims in December’s Christmas Eve murder rampage in Covina, CA received a letter claiming that he was responsible for the unpaid rent of Mrs. Ortiz because she gave “insufficient notice to vacate”(www.kcra.com/news/18653167/detail.html).

It was left like that – just hanging in the air….BAM! Then right along to the next story. I was beside myself thinking who are these callous human beings to think a victim can give notice?

This morning I was still a bit flustered by this and searched for more information on the KCRA site. I was floored to see that not only was the televised piece a half truth, it really wasn’t even newsworthy. According to the story on KCRA’s website, the Associated Press reported that, the company managing the apartment building had no idea of the tenant’s death and as soon as the surviving family members explained the situation the issue was dropped. They would not pursue reimbursement. There is no news story here.

The company was following procedures - no notice, no rent, start tracking down people to get answers. As difficult as it is to lose someone (this particular circumstance even more tragic) once the shock and horror subsided; someone should have contacted the apartment complex. It isn’t the landlord’s responsibility to watch the news for updates on possible tenants. That falls onto the family.

Now this has me really thinking, what was the point of getting the audience emotionally invested in this? Not everyone is going to care. Not everyone will get riled up; there was no way for us to rally together to defend Mr. Ortiz. Not everyone is going to investigate for more information like I did. The average person is going to pass this information on as water cooler gossip and basically not have the whole picture. It was a fluff piece with no real value. I consider this shock factor news ridiculous and it belongs only in tabloid television, not a newscast.

What happened to the fact finding missions for journalists? The stories are written then handed or put on the teleprompt for the anchors to read. The anguish in news caster’s voice and in her eyes was sincere, so I find it difficult that she would willingly report a half truth. The news writer should have to finish the story and apologize.

On a positive note, my instinct to investigative was brought into the light; which will allow me to write more articles.

Like Raoul, I've always wanted to see this in person. This would be a blast and actually not a bad ticket price. But I can't imagine a 1000 people in RollerKing, that will be a tight fit with most people standing.

I wish them all the best in raising the money to stay open. I find it interesting that the landloard isn't will to negotiate. The shopping center is a ghost town. Wouldn't it be better to have some kind of rent coming in, rather than another empty suite? Times are lean and the landlord needs to pay bills also, but unless there is a huge tax write off for loss of rental income, it seems like he's shooting himself in the foot.

Good Luck with Sales!!

First - no one should read this at 3am while everyone in the house is asleep. Trying to keep laughter muffled while tears stream down your face hurts. I feel like I've done 50 sit-ups.

I agree with Shawn - you showed incredible self control and I'm sure both girls are happy they still had a dog.
