What a strange article. Missed most of the story to try to set up this contrast on style between the neighbors and a few commissioners. The issue here was compatibility -- on this particular corner -- not diversity in general. In fact, Commissioner Yee stated he hoped the lesson from this project wouldn't be against diversity. It wasn't because this was about only one corner, and no other. One new thing I learned from this controversy was that there should be more guidance from the city regarding where more modern styles might be appropriate in the central city. For example, if I weren't focused on this matter, I might have supported a more modern design for the 2500 R Street project-- one right on the light rail tracks-- and not abutting so many older single-family homes. Encouraging diversity in particularly appropriate areas rather than leaving the matter to be initiated by the tastes of individual develpers would be a useful tool to encourage diversity.

Definitely some good, local architecture/cultural reporting!
