Man on the Street: St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a day synonymous with leprechauns, green beer and socially acceptable pinching. Whether the luck of the Irish courses through you or not, St. Patty’s Day is coming up. For some, it’s a holiday worth going all out for, especially since this year it falls on a Saturday. For others, however, it’s a day like any other with the exception of avoiding driving downtown and throwing on a green article of clothing. No matter where you fall on the spectrum, The Sacramento Press went to the streets to ask Sacramentans, “What are you doing for St. Patrick’s Day?” Nick James, a 28-year-old barista from Auburn, said that although he is scheduled to work, he will still partake in s

The Shamrock Club: For Irish and Irish at heart

You don’t have to be Irish to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day March 17, and you don’t have to be Irish to join the Shamrock Club of Sacramento – you just have to enjoy all things Celtic and want to have fun. The Shamrock Club was started in 2005 by Sacramento resident Chris Brown and C.J. Kennedy to keep Irish culture and history alive in the region. According to the Shamrock Club website, there are eight other affiliated Shamrock Clubs on the East Coast and in the Midwest. The club promotes awareness and appreciation of Irish/Celtic culture, history and tradition and provides educational and entertainment opportunities for club members and the community. Locals to shave heads to fund childhood cancer research

Sacramentans are gearing up to go hairless next week as this year’s St. Baldrick’s Day events aim to add to the $4 million raised locally in the past decade to fund research for childhood cancer. “The event itself is something to be witnessed,” said Henry de Vere White, co-owner of de Vere’s Irish Pub, located at 1521 L St. “We’ve had women do it because their kid has cancer, we’ve had siblings do it and we’ve had Little League teams show up and shave their heads in honor of their teammates who had cancer.” De Vere White said Friday that shaving heads began in pubs on the east coast when some lawyers decided to try to raise $17,000 on March 17. Since then, it has snowballed to the point

Whiskey and Stitches: Celtic tunes in Sacramento

Playing a fusion of traditional Irish music with a mix of bluegrass sensibilities and punk timing, local band Whiskey and Stitches will play at the Fox and Goose Public House on St. Patrick’s Day. With influences including Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and The Pogues, some might expect to find Whiskey and Stitches composed of hard-drinking rogues, but guitarist and vocalist Mike McCarrick, 40, said that’s not the case. “The ability to play a song and pull it off when you’re absolutely hammered – it’s great in theory, but in reality it doesn’t work,” he said. “You forget the song and the words and the chords.” McCarrick’s day job is as a coding specialist for Sutter Health, mandolin p

Sacramento Master Singers: Celtic Connections

The streets of midtown Sacramento were filled with green-clad revelers in pursuit of green beer and shiny shamrock beads on St. Patrick's Day. At the corner of 21st and J Streets, a different sort of celebration drew a near-capacity crowd. The Sacramento Master Singers chose to honor the holiday with ‘Celtic Connections’, a journey through several centuries of music from the Celtic world. Artistic director and conductor Ralph Hughes led the 45-voice chorus through an ambitious program of music from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. Acclaimed harpist Aileen Kelley provided accompaniment throughout the program, and also performed two solo selections. The ethereal, complex music of

Midtown guide to St. Patrick's Day

It is a common belief that St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland and the inspiration for countess pints of green beer, banished all the snakes from the Emerald Isle. He used a wooden staff to herd the serpents into the sea, banishing them forever. In reality, snakes never lived in Ireland. The climate is just too frigid for the cold-blooded reptilians. Midtown Sacramento boasts a much warmer climate, but, don’t worry, you will probably find a lot more corned beef and cabbage than you will snakes. For this year’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities on March 17, many Midtown businesses will be celebrating with their own takes on honoring the saint. One such place that will be showing off their Ir

Dancers help city kick up its heels at St. Pat's Parade

A local dance troupe hopes to help turn Sacramento's St. Patrick's Day Parade into a céilí – and for all you non-Gaelic speakers out there, that means one big party. While a little beer is known to flow on St. Patrick's Day, the kind of party we're talking about is more of a cultural celebration. The céilí – or céilidh in Scottish Gaelic – developed in Ireland and Scotland as an entertaining get-together where stories were told, poems recited and songs sung. Modern céilís (KAY lees) often include dancing. The céilí is what St. Patrick's Day is all about, said Helen Healy, one of the grand dames of the city's Irish-American community. "It's a Celtic word for a gathering of music, song a
