Nothing says “welcome home” quite like a day spent haggling over registration late fees at the DMV, where excuses are rarely valid and seldom accepted. Tim Jones had a pretty good one. “I guess I could have given them our touring schedule,” Jones, one of Truth & Salvage Co.’s four frontmen/songwriters said with a laugh. “I was home for like four weeks in April but I didn’t get the notice – I haven’t been in town literally for six months.” For the record, they did indeed rescind Jones’ $75 fine. Welcome to L.A. (as the song goes). To say that Truth & Salvage Co.’s touring schedule for the last year as been “busy” is a bit like saying that a politician named “Weiner” texting out photos o

Fear not, Rundown Nation…we’re back! Rundown Headquarters had to be shut down for a little while, while yours truly was tending to a three week gig as a substitute molder of young minds – and it is wrong that I got a little misty-eyed when five or six of them gave me the “oh Captain, my Captain” send-off, “Dead Poets Society” style on the last day of class? If it’s wrong, I don’t want to be right! But now that summer is in full swing, let’s get rolling… School’s Out for Summer Fest with Alien Ant Farm – Any way you slice it, there are eight youngs bands out there who will always be able to say that they opened for Alien Ant Farm – not a bag nugget for the ol’ rock and roll resume when
Trust me, fellow Sactowners…in about six or seven weeks, we’re going to be yearning for this. It’s June 5, and in what should have been our first full official weekend of summer, everyone seems to be deadlocked in collective melancholy over the “WTF!” of late season rains (for these purposes, “WTF” will be officially dubbed as “weather that fails”). We will get our sun. We will get our heat. And it’s summer, which means, we will get our shows. Here’s a look at some of the summer’s can’t miss shows in Sacramento. Cheers! Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt – You can say whatever you want about Lyle Lovett, like his ballyhooed relationship with Julia Roberts or the fact that he bears a slight rese
Just to maintain a little perspective - while our "summer" weather thus far has been a little abnormal and certainly not conducive to our usual late Spring ballyhoo , we really can't complain that much, can we? That said, the unseasonably late rains of 2011 have claimed another victim, and it is tonight's Friday Night Concert in the Park at Cesar Chavez Plaza, which has been cancelled due to inclimate weather, according to a news release from Downtown Sacramento Partnership. Fear not, revelers! Tonight's bill, which was to feature venerable local festival act Mick Martin & the Blues Rockers, Tess & the Hip Trash and Kyle Rowland, has been rescheduled for Friday, August 19. That just mean

It seems like all eyes are on Raley Field this weekend – and amazingly, it’s not because of the Riverkittys. Country superstars the Zac Brown Band (one of the few popular “country” stars these days with the guts to actually sound like country) are getting after it on the field on Thursday night, setting up the stage for Friday’s night’s Brew Fest, and Saturday’s you-knew-it-had-to-happen-eventually “Sactopalooza” party, which features cover bands of the following artists: Journey, Beastie Boys, U2, Dave Matthews Band, No Doubt, Van Halen, Sublime and INXS. Coverpalooza? And no, we are not even "going there" with EndFest, we're just not. So, when you’ve wrapped up the beer tastings and p

Well, can we say summer has officially teed off? Concert in the Park week one is on Friday – that’ll pretty much seal the deal. Tattooed Love Dogs kick off the fun this week, check out the rest of the full season schedule here. When you’re done with that… Portugal. The Man – This is a dizzying band – both in terms of the way streams of colorful instrumental hooks come kaleidescoping out of the amps like some sort of sonic Jackson Pollock, but also in terms of the sheer amount of music they keep cranking out. Most record companies will tell you that it’s tantamount to industry suicide by overload to release a new album every year – but what the hell do they know, anyway? 2007 was their c

Big thanks to Rik Keller for the photos from the show. To see more photos, check out Rik Keller photography here. Are the Devil Makes Three the most local non-local band in history? It’s hard to know how to refer to this wily trio “from” the Dirty Five-Thirty (that’s area code speak for Davis), as they currently call Davis their home, but originally identified themselves as a Santa Cruz band – and that’s not to mention the rumors I hear of a “Vermontster” tattoo cascading the chest of Cooper McBean. But if you judge a band’s locality by the devout rowdiness that follows them into a hometown show, Thursday night’s sold out hootenanny at Harlow’s (their second in six months here in the

It's Wednesday (as I prepare your weekly Rundown), and all I can think about is some G. Love! "I cherish the moment when I get the lucky chance/ To sing my song and let the funky people dance/ make it last. Sonic blasts move past fast fly/ Outta speaker's sneakers stomp to the rhythm that will romp/ Let the wild rumpus start cause it just can't stop." I'll have you covered with a recap of the show, but for now, let's look ahead to a fine week of shows. Sactown's got sauce! Interpol - Loyal Rundown readers may remember a few weeks back when Lindol French and I were musing about the overrated hipster spectacle that is Coachella - but we agreed that the one benefit of having such a festiva

Holy homecoming! We just wrapped up two back-to-back shows from local golden boy Jackie Greene last week at Marilyn’s and Blue Lamp, so what’s this I’m now hearing about two acoustic happy hour shows from him at the Torch Club next Thursday and Friday? Always appreciate the local love, Senor Greene. Just in case you need to be reminded, those shows will be packed, start cocktail hour early. We’re headed into some snappy territory on the local calendar with electronic music champions the Crystal Method also rolling into town next week to slap the woofers around at District 30; check out Sac Press’ Brandon Darnell getting up close with CM’s Ken Jordan. Not to mention that G. Love & Special
