Arena opinion poll released, showing support

A public opinion poll delivered to the City Council Thursday shows support for both the downtown arena and several public funding options. That poll came in with 33 days remaining in the Think Big Sacramento committee’s 100-day timeline to come up with a “menu of options” for financing an entertainment and sports complex, said Kunal Merchant, chief of staff to Mayor Kevin Johnson. Paul Maslin, of the public opinion research and strategy organization Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates, said his company did more than 700 phone interviews with residents of Sacramento, Sacramento County, El Dorado County, Placer County and Yuba County. The polls were completed two weeks ago. The f

Britney Spears does it again on Femme Fatale World Tour

What do fireworks, whips, chains and a pink convertible with a stripper pole all have in common? Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale World Tour, naturally. Spears pulled out all the stops Thursday night at Power Balance Pavilion during the sold-out first performance on her 56-show tour. While backstage minutes before showtime, Spears expressed her excitement over the start of her tour to her Facebook fans: “It’s opening night BITCH!!!!!!!!” The tour’s opener, up-and-coming female rapper Nicki Minaj, set the action-packed tone for the evening with a shoot-out scene opposite a ninja-like character. Minaj set the wardrobe bar high, donning a platinum blond wig, neon green shoes and black spande

Retention of jobs and public safety are priority for Mayor Kevin Johnson

Despite reports of the city’s proposals to lay off more than 350 jobs, including 80 sworn police officers, during Tuesday’s press conference, Mayor Kevin Johnson said that avoiding such layoffs will be a priority. Throughout the conference, Johnson said he wanted Sacramento to remain a full-service city and that he hopes to alleviate any distrust between police officers and the city by playing a more active role in addressing the interests of both parties. “We’re trying to preserve as many jobs as we can and keep public safety at the top of our priorities,” he added. “We’re about to pass and adopt a budget in about three weeks or so, and we do not want to be in a position where our comm

Horses bred for nobility to perform elegant show

Horses originally bred to carry the nobility of Europe to war now have a more peaceful and entertaining vocation – they will be dancing and performing in Power Balance Pavilion June 18. The “World Famous” Lipizzaner Stallions perform in their “Dancing White Stallions” show that recounts their history as well as the cultures of various European countries, including Austria, Slovenia and Spain, said show producer Gary Lashinsky. “All of our horses were bought from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna,” Lashinsky said. The one-hour and 45-minute show is a choreographed dance of 12-14 Lipizzaner Stallions, and it also includes demonstrations of maneuvers riders would have performed in battle

USHER-ing in R&B Music at Power Balance Pavilion

If ever a grand entrance was to be had, last night was it. Usher, the reigning king of R&B, started his two hour concert at Power Balance Pavilion by being pulled across the arena on an elevated platform. The platform, which started in the back of the arena, rose through a plume of smoke to reveal Usher standing in the middle wearing a black jacket and helmet. As the platform approached the main stage, Usher leaped off and immediately started his first song. About half-way through his concert Usher would once again jump aboard the platform and sing to the audience while hovering about mid-way out into the stadium. This, like every other theatric, had the audience singing and yelling with

Kings Conspiracy - Part 2

I wish someone could tell me why it came to this. Out of all the places to move to, it ends up being where our arch rival dwells. To leave a fan base that has given unconditional support for a team that hasn't been great for much of the time since they've graced us with their presence says a lot. Speaking of “saying a lot,” many diehard Kings fans have begged and pleaded for the Maloofs to reconsider their stance with the franchise. I remember writing about them making an idiotic move like this in my last piece, but I never thought it would happen so soon. Ever since writing the first part of this article (which can be read here), I have committed myself to following the business side of

One man, one tweet leads to avalanche of support, #Here We Build

In between cheering, yelling and annoying the apathetic, so-called fan in Row F, Section 107, Seat 17 during the Kings game on Tuesday evening, I was caught up on my tweets when I saw that KHTK 1140 personality Carmichael Dave posed a question via Twitter (@CarmichaelDave) asking folks how much they would pitch in, not necessarily to save the Kings, but to show the Kings and the city how much the community really does want this NBA franchise to stay in town by building a new sports and entertainment complex. Shortly after scolding the lady next to me for reading a book during free throws, she abruptly nudged me and wondered aloud why was it okay then, for me, to be reading my Twitter feed

Echoes of Kings' last move reverberate today

The Sacramento Kings have a history of leaving town. If the team's current majority owners work out a deal soon in Anaheim, Sacramento will become just one more city in a long string of former hometowns. News of their possible departure emerged a little more than a month ago, leaving many people still trying to understand what the loss of the Kings might mean to the city and the region. That raises the question of what happened in Kansas City, Mo., which lost the team to Sacramento in 1985. People who lost their jobs because of the move and the hardcore fans felt it most, say those in the pro sports industry. But others who watched the team closely at that time said the team's loss mean

Kings fans are here to stay

It was raining black and purple outside of Sacramento City Hall Tuesday. A crowd of nearly 30 Kings fans gathered in the rain at 9th and I streets to support the “Here We Stay” campaign to save the Sacramento Kings. Fans decked out in T-shirts and jerseys carrying posters reading “Our Town, Our Team” held their signs and their heads high as they circled City Hall chanting “here we stay” and “Sacramento.” “Here We Stay” founder, Blake Ellington, 28, believes that sports are a way for the community to come together. Ellington said he expected about five to ten people, and was pleasantly surprised by the turnout. Fans expressed that this isn’t just about the losing the Kings, it’s about los
