Following the hot summer months of pilsners, pale ales, IPAs and golden ales, beer lovers are now preparing their palates for the tastes of fall and winter ales. This weekend, local beer enthusiasts will come together for a late summer afternoon of drinking great beer, fundraising for charity and enjoying Sacramento’s picturesque river views. From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 17, Discovery Park will host the 17th Annual California Brewers Festival. The Saturday afternoon event is the perfect way to prepare for Oktoberfest and the beautiful canopy of trees at Discovery Park will surely be the perfect setting. The day’s activities, besides beer tasting, will include food venders, l
Outside a Texan lighthouse – barefoot, with a Conchita horse and a snake as its audience – Musical Charis spent three months writing and recording new tracks in the middle of nowhere in southern Texas. The Sacramento-based band Musical Charis is releasing its third album, “Ace of Space,” on Friday August fifth during the album release party at Cesar Chavez Park. This early release date – six days prior to the national release on August 11th – is a special limited release only available in Sacramento for concert attendees. “We love Sacramento,” said Jessie Brune, the band’s keyboardist. “Sacramento has been a really good home for us and we just wanted to say thank you by making the album
Sacramento’s outdoor summer concert scene is growing, as 40-year old Chris Pendarvis, owner of Naked Lounge and Orphan, is adding the Oak Park Concert Series in McClatchy Park. It’s added to a lineup that includes Concerts in the Park at Cesar Chavez Plaza, Curtis Park’s Music in the Park at the end of June and Friday’s kickoff of Pops in the Park in McKinley Park. The organizers of the free Oak Park Concert Series said they hope to revitalize one of Sacramento’s oldest neighborhoods and make use of the hidden treasures in McClatchy Park. Throughout the summer months, beginning on June 18, Oak Park Productions and Naked Coffee will host performances on one Saturday every month through S
Sorry we're a little late this week with the Rundown, y'all! Tax filing procrastinators, unite! My story and interview with Mr. Garrett "G. Love" Dutton will be up later on this weekend, in preparation for his show at Harlow's on Wednesday night. I won't lie, I can't wait to hear some of those new Avett Brothers produced tunes, played by the Sauce! Meantime, there's a chance for you to unleash your inner Diamond this weekend, and a little more fun on tap for Second Saturday weekend. Cheers! Super Diamond - If you're a regular reader of this space, you know our general disdain for cover bands at Rundown headquarters. Sure, we all like to hear our favorite tunes souped up and busted throu
Harlow's Nightclub was at the center of a perfect storm Monday. Headliner Orgone brought in a decent crowd of folks looking forward to a unique brand of SoCal soulpowerfunk. Local reggae act Zuhg opened the show, bringing a sizable and impassioned young fan base looking forward to high-energy NorCal Jazzreggaejamrock. Many of those who came for Zuhg weren't all that familiar with Orgone. Most of those who came to see Orgone weren't all that familiar with Zuhg. The beauty of this scenario is that if one were to draw a Venn diagram representative of the people who would like each of these acts, it would be very close to a single circle. What ended up happening was the crowd for both ac
or·gone n. A universal life force, a cosmic unit of energy, the creative force in nature. Orgone n. A nine piece soul/funk ensemble from Los Angeles. A staple on the Festival circuit (High Sierra Music Fest, Moe.down, South by Southwest, Jazzfest, to name a few) Orgone has opened for the likes of Al Green and Sharon Jones, and toured with the Roots and Greyboy Allstars. "With a rooted sense of funk, soul, afrobeat, deep rhythms and an intimate understanding of dj culture as well as each others' individual talents, Orgone seamlessly slides through multiple styles and dynamic performances. The group continuously injects whatever they play with a heavy brand of raw funk power." (o
The fliers and advertisements promised big things: “Local arts, crafts and fashion vendors will descend upon K Street, transforming downtown Sacramento into a bustling creative district.” On Saturday, Sacramento News and Review hosted the inaugural Third Saturday Creative Block Party and nudged K Street in the right direction. Despite the scorching heat, more than 40 aspiring clothing and jewelry designers, artists and local businesses set up shop along K Street. “I think it’s wonderful of SN&R to have done this…it brings life to the downtown area. We’re so happy to be here,” said Ginger Wong, president of Transformations Makeup Institute, did makeup, hair and glitter tattoos. Both asp
Photography, music and great food and drinks from popular local joints will collide on Saturday, May 16 at Beatnik Studios during their “Boobie Bash” breast cancer fundraiser. “I belong to a networking group, and the president introduced me to Katie [Erickson], who was looking for a venue to do this event,” said Wes Davis, co-owner of Beatnik Studios, a photography studio in downtown Sacramento. Erickson is a participant in the upcoming Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, which will take place in San Francisco on July 11 and 12. The walk has a goal of each walker raising $1,800 for the “Avon Breast Cancer Crusade,” and Erickson is on her own personal crusade to raise even more than that.
