United Way grants more than $1.1M to nonprofits across five counties

United Way California Capital Region will make grants totaling $1,168,008 to 13 local nonprofits, United Way president and CEO Steve Heath announced today. Funded partners serve people across Amador, El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties and participate in United Way’s projects: STAR Readers, $en$e-Ability and Fit Kids.

“All of our funded partners have proven their incredible abilities to produce profound change in our community,” Heath said. “They know how to achieve measurable outcomes on important issues, and we’re excited to see what they do in the very important areas of children’s education, financial literacy and childhood obesity.”

United Way’s STAR Readers project is working to ensure all children are reading at grade level by fourth grade, a key indicator of whether or not a child will eventually graduate high school. The project uses a three-pronged approach: after-school tutoring to at-risk children from kindergarten through third grade, tools and resources for parents to involve them in their children’s reading, and summer reading programs for children.

STAR Readers partners are Amador-Tuolumne Community Resources ($48,903), Boys & Girls Clubs of El Dorado County Western Slope ($82,000), New Morning Youth and Family Services ($54,281), Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento ($50,000), Sacramento Children’s Home ($70,000) and Sacramento Chinese Community Services Center ($94,283).

United Way’s $en$e-Ability project is working to ensure low-income households are financially literate so they can meet their current obligations and maximize longer-term financial well-being. United Way partners are providing financial education and follow-up support on bank services, budgeting, saving, debt management, retirement planning and insurance.

Several $en$e-Ability partners are working specifically with foster youth to create Individual Development Accounts so they can be self-sufficient when they leave the foster care system. These special bank accounts earn one dollar for every dollar the foster youth saves, and the matching funds can be used to purchase specific items. While earning, foster youth take financial literacy classes and receive financial counseling.

$en$e-Ability partners are Amador-Tuolumne Community Resources ($81,791), Koinonia Family Services ($40,175), Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento ($81,836), Community Link ($94,070), Women’s Empowerment ($40,000), New Morning Youth and Family Services ($27,500) and Yolo Family Resource Center ($70,000).

United Way’s Fit Kids project is working with several nonprofit partners to address the rise in obesity and challenges related to weight gain so that more people will live a healthy lifestyle and fewer people will battle obesity and its corresponding health challenges. Fit Kids partners are teaching kids about nutrition and physical activity and providing opportunities for healthy eating and exercise.

Fit Kids partners are YMCA Superior California ($40,160), Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento ($72,347), Sacramento Chinese Community Services Center ($63,429) and Health Education Council ($197,393).

New Year's Eve isn't all about adults. Besides the New Year's Eve dancing and live music options, there are some family-friendly events to choose from.

Sacramento Press community contributor Julia Beckner created a guide to family activities, which is a great resource, but here are a few more opportunities to share quality time with your family.

Noon Year's Eve at the Y

What: Carnival games, swimming, family relays, food, music and dancing for kids ages 2-12 and their adult chaperones.

Where: Sacramento Area YMCA, 2021 W St.

When: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Cost: $5 for YMCA members, $7 for non-members. Pre-registration is required by visiting sacymca.org or calling 916-452-9622.

Blue Moon New Year's Eve Walk

What: Walk 5 or 10k (3.1 or 6.2 miles) with the Sacramento Walking Sticks, California's largest American Volkssport Association-affiliated walking club. Flashlights are recommended, pets are allowed and the route is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Food will be available after the walk.

Where: Starting at the Pioneer House, 415 P St.

When: 5 to no later than 9 p.m.

Cost: Free, but commemorative patches are available for $3.

New Year's Eve at Capitol Bowl

What: Two hours of glow bowling, shoe rental, party favors and noisemakers.

Where: Capitol Bowl, 900 West Capitol Ave., West Sacramento

When: 7 to 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight

Cost: $50 per lane from 7 to 9 p.m., up to five people per lane. $60 per lane from 10 p.m. to midnight. Reservations required (click here).

It has never occurred to me that Father's Day weekend always happens at the same time as the summer solstice. Is that by coincidence? The longest, sunniest day of the year falls on the weekend that we celebrate our Dad's. That's kind of cool! At least for those of us who celebrate them. Otherwise, think of it as an extended day for you to be having fun! This weekend is packed with family friendly events for the whole family to enjoy at budget friendly prices. There are a few things I've mentioned that are a little more pricey... but they sound so fun! Whatever your budget is and whomever you'd like to spend your time with, check out what this weekend has in store.

Festival: Sacramento French Film Festival—Opening Night -- $10/ $9 students (single ticket)

When: 6pm (Movie at 8:30pm) ***The festival runs through Sunday, June 28th***
Why: Opening night and reception! You cannot see the film tonight without going to the reception. Enjoy an open wine bar and catered hors d’oeuvres by local restaurants and music by DJ Christophe. The Sacramento French Film Festival is an annual event held in July. It celebrates the present as well as the rich history of French cinema featuring new releases and rarely seen classics. It is the only festival dedicated to French cinema in Northern California and one of only two on the West coast. The Sacramento Bee described the Festival as “the Cinematic Highlight of Sacramento's Summer”. All of the films are in French with English subtitles. (Psst! He is himself a complete sideshow performance- known for his fire breathing, sword swallowing, glass walking stunts and many more, he is sure to entertain! Kids & Families: Disney Train Comes to Sacramento! -- $FREE

Festival: 8th Annual Juneteenth Festival-- $FREE

Why: A Celebration of Freedom and the Emancipation Proclamation. What a way we’ve come! This is a two-day event featuring two stages of live musical entertainment, vendors, children's activities, spelling bee, fishing derby, The Juneteenth Educational Theater, essay/poster contests, theater, cultural dance performances, and more on Saturday! The Juneteenth Talent Show is probably the highlight of the event where local aspiring talent takes a stab at the stage. Nearly 8,000 people attend Juneteenth annually. On Sunday check out the 3rd annual Juneteenth Golf Tournament, the Juneteenth Gospel Extravaganza featuring Sacramento’s best gospel artists, food/ware vendors, and all kinds of children’s’ activities. I don’t know much about the band- and couldn’t find any information on them other than they play at all kinds of family friendly events- but I do know that the Pops in The park Concerts are a great night out for families. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets and prepare to have some fun!

Why: Why not? When’s the last time you rode the train? This 3.5-hour trip includes a 28-mile train ride with a stop for a barbecue lunch at Elkhorn Park. The Sacramento River Train, which has three open-air cars and three enclosed air-conditioned coaches, operates between Woodland and West Sacramento.
