The Cave is a new music and multi-use venue coming to Stockton Boulevard, moving in next door to the Colonial Theatre. Formerly a shoe store, The Cave is currently used to hold wrestling events put on by Total Wrestling Federation, and starting Feb. 24, it will be opened to live music, standup comedy, art exhibits and other uses, said Mike Flanagan, who books the venue. “We want this to be a public space where people can come and see a show, hear some comedy or see an art exhibition,” he said. “We have no intention of getting a liquor license, because we want this to be an all-ages place.” Flanagan, who owns Bad Current Records and has been involved with the local music scene, said he w

A few weeks ago I covered the Chippendales out at Thunder Valley Casino Resort. If you recall, I really started to question my “maleness,” since I kind of enjoyed the show. So to test my maleness I decided to take in a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event. It just so happened that Gladiator Challenge, a promoter of all things MMA, was hosting an event out at Thunder Valley Casino Resort. There were sixteen fights on tap, so I was going to get my fill of fights. To those unfamiliar with wresting, it’s a somewhat confusing sport. It’s a bunch of men acting really manly but with tan, smooth, hair-free thighs and chests that glisten with baby oil while fighting in neon spandex panties. WWE’s SmackDown at the Power Balance Pavilion on Tuesday was the first time I had ever been to a wrestling event. I knew there would be a storyline but was surprised by the length of it, the amount of "back story" each match contained. Sac State has changed quite a bit in the past several years. The school campus seems to be in constant flux and construction repairs take place in many parts of the campus. It seems the school, for the past couple of years, has expanded their event and entertainment venue. Punk Slam is one of their newer venues taking place on campus. The Punk Slam menu took place at the University Union Ballroom where students and visitors attended the music-wrestling event. The free concert attracted mostly students to the show. Rodolfo Huerta, lucha libre wrestler and one of Mexico's most beloved film icons, is known as El Santo, or "The Saint." What's surprising though, is that the masked wrestler-cum-actor lived up to his exalted moniker on and off the screen. El Santo "saved" the Mexican film industry as it was on its deathbed, creating films that drew patrons back to the big screens, said Fred Dobb, film curator at La Raza Galeria Posada. When El Santo died in 1984 at the age of 66, thousands watched as the famous actor/wrestler was buried in his signature silver mask.
