Several thousand spectators were on hand to enjoy the music and performance of a dozen bands who played on 10 different stages. Performing at the event was Club 90, Whiskey Dawn, Gallagher, Wonderbread 5, Bump City, the Dave Russell Band, several tribute bands such as James Garner (Johnny Cash), Because (Beatles), Pink Froyd (Pink Floyd), Twanna Turner and Superlicious, and the legendary Elvin Bishop. (The man, the guitar, the legend - Elvin Bishop) Several bands played at the same time, at different stages, so you had to choose which group to watch. Each and every stage was packed with spectators. Stations were set up close to each stage to sell liquor, non alcoholic drinks and food.
It was a sea of cut-off shorts, cowboy hats, and overalls at Capitol Mall on Sunday afternoon for Country in the Park 2010. KNCI 105.1 managed to turn the intersection on Capitol Mall and Fifth Streets into a country music venue for the day. The gated-off intersection was filled with an estimated 11,000-12,000 country music fans, making this year one of the biggest in it’s 11-year existence, according to Mark Evans, program director at KHTK and KNCI Sacramento. Due to budget cuts Gibson Ranch, where the concert is normally held, was unable to rent out the park to KNCI this year. Whiskey Dawn, a popular and energetic country music group, successfully opened Pops in the Park for the summer in East Portal Park in East Sacramento.A huge crowd was in place before they began. Pals listening to the music. Rich Cazneaux handed out free popsicles. Everyone loved the music. Everyone had a good time hanging out. East Sacramento is gearing up for this year's annual Pops in the Park concerts, starting Saturday with the country band Whiskey Dawn at East Portal Park. Pops in the Park began in 1991. “The Sacramento Symphony did outdoor concerts in every council district in order to pay back the community,” recalled Councilman Steve Cohn. The concerts took place in the afternoon, but because of the heat, Cohn said attendance usually was low.
