Dwayne Keller, a 60-year-old retired artist from Sacramento, said, “I am excited to walk in the rain instead of the heat.”

Alex Arnold, a 23-year-old photographer and student from Sacramento, said, “I am excited to celebrate at the Turn Verein for Oktoberfest on Oct. 7 and 8. I am also excited for photo shoots with the fall leaves.”

My plan of the day included another road trip while the rain and wind were pummeling the area.

At 12:16pm I found myself on a levee overlooking the Vic Fazio Yolo Wildlife Area.

Interstate 80 is seen in the upper third of the photo above. Everything is submerged. This is the south side of the freeway. The north side is also filled with water.Looking east from the levee I saw more than these two power poles skirted by water.

To see how the are looked on Feb. 13, about six weeks ago, CLICK HERE>>>Next I hopped on Old River Rd from West Sac and travelled south on the west side of the Sacramento River. A trailer park along the way had water encroaching upon it. The photo above is the big water tower along I-5 just south of the Pocket area.

It's evident how high the river is compared to the level of dry land.

Turned around and then headed north out of West Sacramento. Followed N. Harbor Blvd to Old River Rd., still on the west side of the river. I wanted to see how the homes along Garden Hwy looked from this perspective.

To see how the area looked March 20, CLICK HERE>>>These two frame-built homes look like houseboats from this perspective. This shows the Sacramento River near the Tule Canal north of West Sacramento.

Feel like I still live in Washington state with all this rain. So I did what comes naturally to me and took a trip along the rivers to see what havoc the wind and rain have created.

Headed east on Hwy 50 to end up at Folsom Dam. The rain was coming down hard as I drove by it. Water was pouring into the American River from Folsom Lake.

Then I shot over to Sunrise Blvd and took the American River Access to get next to the river. A few people were braving the rain. A woman below paused to look at the river as she crossed the foot bridge at 11:04am (below.)

Next I headed to River Bend Park, hoping to drive to the river but access was closed. It was pouring and I didn't feel like getting cold and wet.

Onward to the Howe Ave Access Park. A sign indicated it was closed due to flooding. Yep, it was flooded.

Trees normally dry were submerged.

Arrived at Discovery Park around 1pm. The road over the green bridge was blocked. The rain took a break and folks ventured out. People parked their cars at the entrance and walked across the bridge. It was immediately apparent why it was closed to vehicles.

The river and land had become one. Kinda zen-ish.Got on the Garden Highway around 1:45pm and it was pouring hard again. Saw several scenes similar to the one at the very top and the one below. Resident's backyards were replaced with the Sacramento River. Some vehicles were submerged.

Throughout my journey I spotted split trees and lots of debris in the road driven by wind and rain.

Minus a mid-summer furnace blast of heat (so far), we've had near continuous Delta Breezes and mild temperatures, clean air and as one local weathercaster puts it, "good sleepin' weather."

The cool weather means that backyard and balcony gardeners may have harvested merely a handful of homegrown tomatoes. Now, residents can pick up good, fresh, cheap tomatoes from local farmers almost any day of the week; as well as nectarines, peaches, flowers, avocados, carrots, potatoes, strawberries, lavender and lavender honey, cucumbers, peaches, blackberries, blueberries and more ...

Prices on tomatoes range from $2.00 to $2.50 per pound for Heirloom tomatoes, to $.50 per pound for "Overripe."

Some farmers' produce is Certified Organic. Others have farming methods that are not certified organic, yet minimize the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. If you don't see a sign and want to know about how your food is grown, just ask.

Part of the pleasure of the Farmer's Markets, any day of the week, is getting to know and support the members of the community, who support us with their hard work and healthful produce.

A winter storm carrying wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rain pounded the Sacramento region Wednesday, cutting power to more than 50,000 people, knocking down dozens of trees and causing minor street flooding.

Most of the outages were scattered in small pockets with small numbers of customers per outage. The highest number of outages was 370 at the storm's peak, which occurred between about 9 and 10 a.m., said Chris Capra, spokesperson for Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

The storm didn't cause nearly the amount of power outages as the biggest storm in October, when thousands of outages occurred, Capra said. The lack of leaves on trees at this time of year helped; there wasn't a substantial number of leaves to soak up rain into branches or to contribute to branches being blown about by the wind, he said.

"We haven't seen the kind of damage we saw in the October storm," Capra said.

The city of Sacramento's Urban Forestry department got 40 calls of trees down, eight for trees needing to be removed and 31 calls of branches down or damaged, according to city Department of Transportation spokesperson Linda Tucker.

Almost 20 traffic signals were affected, many turned or without power, and some street lights were knocked down by falling trees or damaged by wind. City street crews closed Raley Boulevard near Santa Ana Avenue due to flooding of Magpie Creek.

Many people experienced only momentary losses of power. SMUD troubleshooters and other crews were out working to restore power throughout the day, but not during the height of the storm.

"When it's real windy and wet, we can't put crews out there to work," Capra said. "First of all for their safety. And in a matter of time, the wind could blow real hard again and it becomes fruitless.

By 7:30 p.m., only 2,700 customers were without power.

"We're looking at restoration efforts continuing throughout the night," Capra said.

Sacramento residents can call 311 to report downed trees or branches or other unsafe conditions to the city.

Sacramento, CA
Friday, May 1, 2009

Sacramento EMS crews were kept quite busy all day Friday. Mild temperatures and start of a new weekend had many people out on the road, but add in rain with heavy traffic throughout the region and you’ve created a recipe for havoc on the roads. We caught up with Sacramento Fire engines, truck crews, medic rigs, and Sac Police on a couple of incidents today out of the many we heard being dispatched over the squawk box. As the rain poured down, fire crews made sure the scenes were safe and assisted as paramedics tended to the victims; and officers took statements and reports on wet notepads.

The first incident we encountered with EMS crews was a head-on collision on Elder Creek Rd, just east of Power Inn before the railroad tracks. The second incident was a vehicle vs bicycle and a secondary collision when another vehicle ran into the first. We were unable to get information on injuries; however, airbags deployed on both of the vehicles in the first accident, and the juvenile bicyclist was being treated in the back of the ambulance upon our arrival at the second incident.

These weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the weekend. With the decent temperatures expect lots of people out and about and heavy traffic conditions. With the sporadic cloud burst and periods of heavy rain, expect traffic delays. Consider leaving early so you can take your time getting to your destination safely. When we are in a hurry and potentially distracted, it greatly increases our chances to be involved in an accident. Not only do we put ourselves, our families and those around us at risk, we also put our local firefighters, paramedics and law enforcement at risk as they put themselves in harms way on the wet roads to tend to our injuries and take reports. Yes, it is their job, but wouldn’t it be nice if they didn’t have to do their job. Be safe as you travel around town this weekend.

Turn off those heaters and bust out the tank tops. Sacramento is experiencing well above average temperatures this week after a long stretch of cold and fog. Yesterday, Jan. 12, 2009, Sacramento recorded a high temperature of 73° F. That crushed the previous high for the same date of 67° F set way back in 1980 (weather.com).

This heat wave raises the question of that dreaded term, Global Warming (or Climate Change, or Green House Effect).

Other questions arise as well: Are we really going to lose San Francisco to the rising ocean levels? Will Sacramento melt in extreme heat this summer? I dare not mention the sad fate of the beloved polar bear. Everyone has their own opinion on the topic, and I am sure many of us have differing views.

Let me know how you all feel. I know I am enjoying this unusually warm winter week, but I ask myself, "Should I feel guilty?"
