In an effort to educate the public on how to make our world greener, various exhibits set up booths on the west steps at the State Capitol for the California Green Fair on Wednesday, May 16. The various demonstrations included green ideas for the workplace and at home such as installing low-flow shower heads, washing vegetables in a container instead of under running water and turning off water when soaping hands. Information was also given as to why more people should abstain from eating animal products, namely meat. The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities is presenting a FREE workshop to help customers use water wisely and learn the in’s and out’s of the City’s Water Conservation Ordinance. The workshop will take place on Saturday February 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the City of Sacramento Department of Utilities Water Conservation Office, 2260 Glen Ellen Circle. Taught by certified Water Conservation Specialists, the workshop will provide tips and tools for creating a water wise landscape and ways to save water indoors. The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities is seeking volunteers to assist in the City’s water conservation efforts. Water Conservation Ambassadors will be trained to assist residents in finding leaks on their property, present conservation information at community events and how to spot and report water waste. Each morning, Amy Parker and her husband Michael Palmer step from their front porch into a sanctuary nestled among flowers and rocks shaded by trees, luring butterflies and bees to stop and pollinate. The Sacramentans recently transformed the front yard of their 10-year-old home into an inviting rock garden. Before it became a garden, the space was a lawn with fruit trees. Now it is abundant with colorful plants that require short watering sessions throughout the week. Currently, city code allows Sacramento residents to water their yards three times per week during the summer. May’s rainstorms brought a tremendous amount of water to California, but were not enough to end the current three-year drought. Numbers released by the California Department of Water Resources show that many of the state’s reservoirs have reached near-normal levels. In Sacramento, the total rainfall to date of nearly 16 inches is about 90 percent of normal. The news isn’t all good, though. By comparison, Los Angeles has received only 62 percent of its normal rainfall. And statewide snowpack water content is hovering around 63 percent of normal. According to the California Drought Report, released in March by DWR and the California Department of Agriculture, there are significant differe
